Et ego, fratres, non potui vobis loqui quasi spiritualibus, sed quasi carnalibus. Tamquam parvulis in Christo,

And I, brethren, could not speak to you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal. As unto little ones in Christ.

And when I preached to you, I had to approach you as men with natural, not with spiritual thoughts. You were little children in Christ’s nursery,

lac vobis potum dedi, non escam: nondum enim poteratis: sed nec nunc quidem potestis: adhuc enim carnales estis.

I gave you milk to drink, not meat; for you were not able as yet. But neither indeed are you now able; for you are yet carnal.

and I gave you milk, not meat; you were not strong enough for it. You are not strong enough for it even now; nature still lives in you.

Cum enim sit inter vos zelus, et contentio: nonne carnales estis, et secundum hominem ambulatis?

For, whereas there is among you envying and contention, are you not carnal, and walk according to man?

Do not these rivalries, these dissensions among you shew that nature is still alive, that you are guided by human standards?

Cum enim quis dicat: Ego quidem sum Pauli; alius autem: Ego Apollo: nonne homines estis? Quid igitur est Apollo? quid vero Paulus?

For while one saith, I indeed am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollo; are you not men? What then is Apollo, and what is Paul?

When one of you says, I am for Paul, and another, I am for Apollo, are not these human thoughts? Why, what is Apollo, what is Paul?

ministri ejus, cui credidistis, et unicuique sicut Dominus dedit.

The ministers of him whom you have believed; and to every one as the Lord hath given.
5
Only the ministers of the God in whom your faith rests, who have brought that faith to each of you in the measure God granted.

Ego plantavi, Apollo rigavit: sed Deus incrementum dedit.
6
I have planted, Apollo watered, but God gave the increase.

It was for me to plant the seed, for Apollo to water it, but it was God who gave the increase.
7
Itaque neque qui plantat est aliquid, neque qui rigat: sed qui incrementum dat, Deus.
7
Therefore, neither he that planteth is any thing, nor he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
7
And if so, the man who plants, the man who waters, count for nothing; God is everything, since it is he who gives the increase.
8
Qui autem plantat, et qui rigat, unum sunt. Unusquisque autem propriam mercedem accipiet, secundum suum laborem.
8
Now he that planteth, and he that watereth, are one. And every man shall receive his own reward, according to his own labour.

This man plants, that man waters; it is all one. And yet either will receive his own wages, in proportion to his own work.

Dei enim sumus adjutores: Dei agricultura estis, Dei ædificatio estis.

For we are God’s coadjutors: you are God’s husbandry; you are God’s building.

You are a field of God’s tilling, a structure of God’s design; and we are only his assistants.
10
Secundum gratiam Dei, quæ data est mihi, ut sapiens architectus fundamentum posui: alius autem superædificat. Unusquisque autem videat quomodo superædificet.

According to the grace of God that is given to me, as a wise architect, I have laid the foundation; and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

With what grace God has bestowed on me, I have laid a foundation as a careful architect should; it is left for someone else to build upon it. Only, whoever builds on it must be careful how he builds.

Fundamentum enim aliud nemo potest ponere præter id quod positum est, quod est Christus Jesus.

For other foundation no man can lay, but that which is laid; which is Christ Jesus.

The foundation which has been laid is the only one which anybody can lay; I mean Jesus Christ.

Si quis autem superædificat super fundamentum hoc, aurum, argentum, lapides pretiosos, ligna, fœnum, stipulam,

Now if any man build upon this foundation, gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble:

But on this foundation different men will build in gold, silver, precious stones, wood, grass, or straw,

uniuscujusque opus manifestum erit: dies enim Domini declarabit, quia in igne revelabitur: et uniuscujusque opus quale sit, ignis probabit.

Every man’s work shall be manifest; for the day of the Lord shall declare it, because it shall be revealed in fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work, of what sort it is.

and each man’s workmanship will be plainly seen. It is the day of the Lord that will disclose it, since that day is to reveal itself in fire, and fire will test the quality of each man’s workmanship.

Si cujus opus manserit quod superædificavit, mercedem accipiet.
14
If any man’s work abide, which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
14
He will receive a reward, if the building he has added on stands firm;
15
Si cujus opus arserit, detrimentum patietur: ipse autem salvus erit, sic tamen quasi per ignem.
15
If any man’s work burn, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire.
15
if it is burnt up, he will be the loser; and yet he himself will be saved, though only as men are saved by passing through fire.

Nescitis quia templum Dei estis, et Spiritus Dei habitat in vobis?
16
Know you not, that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
16
Do you not understand that you are God’s temple, and that God’s Spirit has his dwelling in you?
17
Si quis autem templum Dei violaverit, disperdet illum Deus. Templum enim Dei sanctum est, quod estis vos.
17
But if any man violate the temple of God, him shall God destroy. For the temple of God is holy, which you are.

If anybody desecrates the temple of God, God will bring him to ruin. It is a holy thing, this temple of God which is nothing other than yourselves.
18
Nemo se seducat: si quis videtur inter vos sapiens esse in hoc sæculo, stultus fiat ut sit sapiens.
18
Let no man deceive himself: if any man among you seem to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
18
You must not deceive yourselves, any of you, about this. If any of you thinks he is wise, after the fashion of his fellow men, he must turn himself into a fool, so as to be truly wise.
19
Sapientia enim hujus mundi, stultitia est apud Deum. Scriptum est enim: Comprehendam sapientes in astutia eorum.

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written: I will catch the wise in their own craftiness.
19
This world’s wisdom, with God, is but folly. So we read in scripture, I will entrap the wise with their own cunning.
20
Et iterum: Dominus novit cogitationes sapientium quoniam vanæ sunt.
20
And again: The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.
20
And again, The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, and how empty they are.
21
Nemo itaque glorietur in hominibus.
21
Let no man therefore glory in men.
21
Nobody, therefore, should repose his confidence in men.
22
Omnia enim vestra sunt, sive Paulus, sive Apollo, sive Cephas, sive mundus, sive vita, sive mors, sive præsentia, sive futura: omnia enim vestra sunt:
22
For all things are yours, whether it be Paul, or Apollo, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; for all are yours;
22
Everything is for you, whether it be Paul, or Apollo, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or the present, or the future; it is all for you,
23
vos autem Christi: Christus autem Dei.
23
And you are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.

and you for Christ, and Christ for God.
