Chapter 2
|
Vulgate><Douay-Rheims><Knox Bible
1
1
And when the days of the Pentecost were accomplished, they were all together in one place:
1
When the day of Pentecost came round, while they were all gathered together in unity of purpose,
2
2
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
2
all at once a sound came from heaven like that of a strong wind blowing, and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3
Et apparuerunt illis dispertitæ linguæ tamquam ignis, seditque supra singulos eorum:
3
And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them.
3
Then appeared to them what seemed to be tongues of fire, which parted and came to rest on each of them;
4
4
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak.
4
and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in strange languages, as the Spirit gave utterance to each.
5
5
Now there were dwelling at Jerusalem, Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
5
Among those who were dwelling in Jerusalem at this time were devout Jews from every country under heaven;
6
6
And when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded in mind, because that every man heard them speak in his own tongue.
6
so, when the noise of this went abroad, the crowd which gathered was in bewilderment; each man severally heard them speak in his own language.
7
7
And they were all amazed, and wondered, saying: Behold, are not all these, that speak, Galileans?
7
And they were all beside themselves with astonishment; Are they not all Galileans speaking? they asked.
8
et quomodo nos audivimus unusquisque linguam nostram in qua nati sumus?
8
And how have we heard, every man our own tongue wherein we were born?
8
How is it that each of us hears them talking his own native tongue?
9
9
Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
9
There are Parthians among us, and Medes, and Elamites; our homes are in Mesopotamia, or Judaea, or Cappadocia; in Pontus or Asia,
10
10
Phrygia, and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome,
10
Phrygia or Pamphylia, Egypt or the parts of Libya round Cyrene; some of us are visitors from Rome,
11
Judæi quoque, et Proselyti, Cretes, et Arabes: audivimus eos loquentes nostris linguis magnalia Dei.
11
Jews also, and proselytes, Cretes, and Arabians: we have heard them speak in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.
11
some of us are Jews and others proselytes; there are Cretans among us too, and Arabians; and each has been hearing them tell of God’s wonders in his own language.
12
12
And they were all astonished, and wondered, saying one to another: What meaneth this?
12
So they were all beside themselves with perplexity, and asked one another, What can this mean?
13
13
But others mocking, said: These men are full of new wine.
13
There were others who said, mockingly, They have had their fill of new wine.
14
14
But Peter standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and spoke to them: Ye men of Judea, and all you that dwell in Jerusalem, be this known to you, and with your ears receive my words.
14
But Peter, with the eleven apostles at his side, stood there and raised his voice to speak to them; Men of Judaea, he said, and all you who are dwelling in Jerusalem, I must tell you this; listen to what I have to say.
15
15
For these are not drunk, as you suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day:
15
These men are not drunk, as you suppose; it is only the third hour of the day.
16
16
But this is that which was spoken of by the prophet Joel:
16
This is what was foretold by the prophet Joel:
17
17
And it shall come to pass, in the last days, (saith the Lord,) I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy: and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
17
In the last times, God says, I will pour out my spirit upon all mankind, and your sons and daughters will be prophets. Your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;
18
18
And upon my servants indeed, and upon my handmaids will I pour out in those days of my spirit, and they shall prophesy.
18
and I will pour out my spirit in those days upon my servants and hand-maids, so that they will prophesy.
19
et dabo prodigia in cælo sursum, et signa in terra deorsum, sanguinem, et ignem, et vaporem fumi:
19
And I will shew wonders in the heaven above, and signs on the earth beneath: blood and fire, and vapour of smoke.
19
I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs on the earth beneath, blood and fire and whirling smoke;
20
sol convertetur in tenebras, et luna in sanguinem, antequam veniat dies Domini magnus et manifestus.
20
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and manifest day of the Lord come.
20
the sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, before the day of the Lord comes, great and glorious.
21
Et erit: omnis quicumque invocaverit nomen Domini, salvus erit.
21
And it shalt come to pass, that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved.
21
And then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
22
Viri Israëlitæ, audite verba hæc: Jesum Nazarenum, virum approbatum a Deo in vobis, virtutibus, et prodigiis, et signis, quæ fecit Deus per illum in medio vestri, sicut et vos scitis:
22
Ye men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you, by miracles, and wonders, and signs, which God did by him, in the midst of you, as you also know:
22
Men of Israel, listen to this. Jesus of Nazareth was a man duly accredited to you from God; such were the miracles and wonders and signs which God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves well know.
23
23
This same being delivered up, by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, you by the hands of wicked men have crucified and slain.
23
This man you have put to death; by God’s fixed design and foreknowledge, he was betrayed to you, and you, through the hands of sinful men, have cruelly murdered him.
24
quem Deus suscitavit, solutis doloribus inferni, juxta quod impossibile erat teneri illum ab eo.
24
Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the sorrows of hell, as it was impossible that he should be holden by it.
24
But God raised him up again, releasing him from the pangs of death; it was impossible that death should have the mastery over him.
25
David enim dicit in eum: Providebam Dominum in conspectu meo semper: quoniam a dextris est mihi, ne commovear:
25
For David saith concerning him: I foresaw the Lord before my face: because he is at my right hand, that I may not be moved.
25
It is in his person that David says, Always I can keep the Lord within sight; always he is at my right hand, to make me stand firm.
26
26
For this my heart hath been glad, and any tongue hath rejoiced: moreover my flesh also shall rest in hope.
26
So there is gladness in my heart, and rejoicing on my lips; my body, too, shall rest in confidence
27
27
Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, nor suffer thy Holy One to see corruption.
27
that thou wilt not leave my soul in the place of death, or allow thy faithful servant to see corruption.
28
Notas mihi fecisti vias vitæ: et replebis me jucunditate cum facie tua.
28
Thou hast made known to me the ways of life: thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
28
Thou hast shewn me the way of life; thou wilt make me full of gladness in thy presence.
29
29
Ye men, brethren, let me freely speak to you of the patriarch David; that he died, and was buried; and his sepulchre is with us to this present day.
29
My brethren, I can say this to you about the patriarch David without fear of contradiction, that he did die, and was buried, and his tomb is among us to this day.
30
30
Whereas therefore he was a prophet, and knew that God hath sworn to him with an oath, that of the fruit of his loins one should sit upon his throne.
30
But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised him on oath that he would set the sons of his body upon his throne;
31
31
Foreseeing this, he spoke of the resurrection of Christ. For neither was he left in hell, neither did his flesh see corruption.
31
it was of the Christ he said, foreseeing his resurrection, that he was not left in the place of death, and that his body did not see corruption.
32
Hunc Jesum resuscitavit Deus, cujus omnes nos testes sumus.
32
This Jesus hath God raised again, whereof all we are witnesses.
32
God, then, has raised up this man, Jesus, from the dead; we are all witnesses of it.
33
Dextera igitur Dei exaltatus, et promissione Spiritus Sancti accepta a Patre, effudit hunc, quem vos videtis et auditis.
33
Being exalted therefore by the right hand of God, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath poured forth this which you see and hear.
33
And now, exalted at God’s right hand, he has claimed from his Father his promise to bestow the Holy Spirit; and he has poured out that Spirit, as you can see and hear for yourselves.
34
34
For David ascended not into heaven; but he himself said: The Lord said to my Lord, sit thou on my right hand,
34
David never went up to heaven, and yet David has told us, The Lord said to my Master, Sit on my right hand,
35
donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum.
35
Until I make thy enemies thy footstool.
35
while I make thy enemies a footstool under thy feet.
36
Certissime sciat ergo omnis domus Israël, quia et Dominum eum et Christum fecit Deus hunc Jesum, quem vos crucifixistis.
36
Therefore let all the house of Israel know most certainly, that God hath made both Lord and Christ, this same Jesus, whom you have crucified.
36
Let it be known, then, beyond doubt, to all the house of Israel, that God has made him Master and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.
37
37
Now when they had heard these things, they had compunction in their heart, and said to Peter, and to the rest of the apostles: What shall we do, men and brethren?
37
When they heard this, their consciences were stung; and they asked Peter and his fellow apostles, Brethren, what must we do?
38
Petrus vero ad illos: Pœnitentiam, inquit, agite, et baptizetur unusquisque vestrum in nomine Jesu Christi in remissionem peccatorum vestrorum: et accipietis donum Spiritus Sancti.
38
But Peter said to them: Do penance, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins: and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
38
Repent, Peter said to them, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, to have your sins forgiven; then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39
39
For the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all that are far off, whomsoever the Lord our God shall call.
39
This promise is for you and for your children, and for all those, however far away, whom the Lord our God calls to himself.
40
40
And with very many other words did he testify and exhort them, saying: Save yourselves from this perverse generation.
40
And he used many more words besides, urgently appealing to them; Save yourselves, he said, from this false-minded generation.
41
41
They therefore that received his word, were baptized; and there were added in that day about three thousand souls.
41
So all those who had taken his words to heart were baptized, and about three thousand souls were won for the Lord that day.
42
42
And they were persevering in the doctrine of the apostles, and in the communication of the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
42
These occupied themselves continually with the apostles’ teaching, their fellowship in the breaking of bread, and the fixed times of prayer,
43
43
And fear came upon every soul: many wonders also and signs were done by the apostles in Jerusalem, and there was great fear in all.
43
and every soul was struck with awe, so many were the wonders and signs performed by the apostles in Jerusalem.
44
44
And all they that believed, were together, and had all things common.
44
All the faithful held together, and shared all they had,
45
Possessiones et substantias vendebant, et dividebant illa omnibus, prout cuique opus erat.
45
Their possessions and goods they sold, and divided them to all, according as every one had need.
45
selling their possessions and their means of livelihood, so as to distribute to all, as each had need.
46
46
And continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they took their meat with gladness and simplicity of heart;
46
They persevered with one accord, day by day, in the temple worship, and, as they broke bread in this house or that, took their share of food with gladness and simplicity of heart,
47
47
Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord increased daily together such as should be saved.
47
praising God, and winning favour with all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship others that were to be saved.
