1
1
I am the true vine, and it is my Father who tends it.
1
I AM the true vine; and my Father is the husbandman.
2
2
The branch that yields no fruit in me, he cuts away; the branch that does yield fruit, he trims clean, so that it may yield more fruit.
2
Every branch in me, that beareth not fruit, he will take away: and every one that beareth fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3
Jam vos mundi estis propter sermonem quem locutus sum vobis.
3
You, through the message I have preached to you, are clean already;
3
Now you are clean by reason of the word, which I have spoken to you.
4
Manete in me, et ego in vobis. Sicut palmes non potest ferre fructum a semetipso, nisi manserit in vite, sic nec vos, nisi in me manseritis.
4
you have only to live on in me, and I will live on in you. The branch that does not live on in the vine can yield no fruit of itself; no more can you, if you do not live on in me.
4
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me.
5
Ego sum vitis, vos palmites: qui manet in me, et ego in eo, hic fert fructum multum, quia sine me nihil potestis facere.
5
I am the vine, you are its branches; if a man lives on in me, and I in him, then he will yield abundant fruit; separated from me, you have no power to do anything.
5
I am the vine; you the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing.
6
6
If a man does not live on in me, he can only be like the branch that is cast off and withers away; such a branch is picked up and thrown into the fire, to burn there.
6
If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch, and shall wither, and they shall gather him up, and cast him into the fire, and he burneth.
7
7
As long as you live on in me, and my words live on in you, you will be able to make what request you will, and have it granted.
7
If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will, and it shall be done unto you.
8
8
My Father’s name has been glorified, if you yield abundant fruit, and prove yourselves my disciples.
8
In this is my Father glorified; that you bring forth very much fruit, and become my disciples.
9
Sicut dilexit me Pater, et ego dilexi vos. Manete in dilectione mea.
9
I have bestowed my love upon you, just as my Father has bestowed his love upon me; live on, then, in my love.
9
As the Father hath loved me, I also have loved you. Abide in my love.
10
10
You will live on in my love, if you keep my commandments, just as it is by keeping my Father’s commandments that I live on in his love.
10
If you keep my commandments, you shall abide in my love; as I also have kept my Father’s commandments, and do abide in his love.
11
11
All this I have told you, so that my joy may be yours, and the measure of your joy may be filled up.
11
These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be filled.
12
12
This is my commandment, that you should love one another, as I have loved you.
12
This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you.
13
13
This is the greatest love a man can shew, that he should lay down his life for his friends;
13
Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14
Vos amici mei estis, si feceritis quæ ego præcipio vobis.
14
and you, if you do all that I command you, are my friends.
14
You are my friends, if you do the things that I command you.
15
Jam non dicam vos servos: quia servus nescit quid faciat dominus ejus. Vos autem dixi amicos: quia omnia quæcumque audivi a Patre meo, nota feci vobis.
15
I do not speak of you any more as my servants; a servant is one who does not understand what his master is about, whereas I have made known to you all that my Father has told me; and so I have called you my friends.
15
I will not now call you servants: for the servant knoweth not what his lord doth. But I have called you friends: because all things whatsoever I have heard of my Father, I have made known to you.
16
16
It was not you that chose me, it was I that chose you. The task I have appointed you is to go out and bear fruit, fruit which will endure; so that every request you make of the Father in my name may be granted you.
16
You have not chosen me: but I have chosen you; and have appointed you, that you should go, and should bring forth fruit; and your fruit should remain: that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
17
Hæc mando vobis: ut diligatis invicem.
17
These are the directions I give you, that you should love one another.
17
These things I command you, that you love one another.
18
Si mundus vos odit, scitote quia me priorem vobis odio habuit.
18
If the world hates you, be sure that it hated me before it learned to hate you.
18
If the world hate you, know ye, that it hath hated me before you.
19
19
If you belonged to the world, the world would know you for its own and love you; it is because you do not belong to the world, because I have singled you out from the midst of the world, that the world hates you.
19
If you had been of the world, the world would love its own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
20
20
Do not forget what I said to you, No servant can be greater than his master. They will persecute you just as they have persecuted me; they will pay the same attention to your words as to mine.
20
Remember my word that I said to you: The servant is not greater than his master. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you: if they have kept my word, they will keep yours also.
21
Sed hæc omnia facient vobis propter nomen meum: quia nesciunt eum qui misit me.
21
And they will treat you thus because you bear my name; they have no knowledge of him who sent me.
21
But all these things they will do to you for my name’s sake: because they know not him that sent me.
22
22
If I had not come and given them my message, they would not have been in fault; as it is, their fault can find no excuse.
22
If I had not come, and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
23
Qui me odit, et Patrem meum odit.
23
To hate me is to hate my Father too.
23
He that hateth me, hateth my Father also.
24
24
If I had not done what no one else ever did in their midst they would not have been in fault; as it is, they have hated, with open eyes, both me and my Father.
24
If I had not done among them the works that no other man hath done, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father.
25
25
And all this, in fulfilment of the saying which is written in their law, They hated me without cause.
25
But that the word may be fulfilled which is written in their law: They hated me without cause.
26
Cum autem venerit Paraclitus, quem ego mittam vobis a Patre, Spiritum veritatis, qui a Patre procedit, ille testimonium perhibebit de me;
26
Well, when the truth-giving Spirit, who proceeds from the Father, has come to befriend you, he whom I will send to you from the Father’s side, he will bear witness of what I was;
26
But when the Paraclete cometh, whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceedeth from the Father, he shall give testimony of me.
27
27
and you too are to be my witnesses, you who from the first have been in my company.
27
And you shall give testimony, because you are with me from the beginning.
