And he spoke also a parable to them, that we ought always to pray, and not to faint,

Dicebat autem et parabolam ad illos, quoniam oportet semper orare et non deficere,

And he told them a parable, shewing them that they ought to pray continually, and never be discouraged.

Saying: There was a judge in a certain city, who feared not God, nor regarded man.

dicens: Judex quidam erat in quadam civitate, qui Deum non timebat, et hominem non reverebatur.

There was a city once, he said, in which lived a judge who had no fear of God, no regard for man;

And there was a certain widow in that city, and she came to him, saying: Avenge me of my adversary.

Vidua autem quædam erat in civitate illa, et veniebat ad eum, dicens: Vindica me de adversario meo.

and there was a widow in this city who used to come before him and say, Give me redress against one who wrongs me.

And he would not for a long time. But afterwards he said within himself: Although I fear not God, nor regard man,

Et nolebat per multum tempus. Post hæc autem dixit intra se: Etsi Deum non timeo, nec hominem revereor:

For a time he refused; but then he said to himself, Fear of God I have none, nor regard for man,

Yet because this widow is troublesome to me, I will avenge her, lest continually coming she weary me.

tamen quia molesta est mihi hæc vidua, vindicabo illam, ne in novissimo veniens sugillet me.

but this widow wearies me; I will give her redress, or she will wear me down at last with her visits.

And the Lord said: Hear what the unjust judge saith.

Ait autem Dominus: Audite quid judex iniquitatis dicit:

Listen, the Lord said, to the words of the unjust judge,

And will not God revenge his elect who cry to him day and night: and will he have patience in their regard?

Deus autem non faciet vindictam electorum suorum clamantium ad se die ac nocte, et patientiam habebit in illis?

and tell me, will not God give redress to his elect, when they are crying out to him, day and night? Will he not be impatient with their wrongs?

I say to you, that he will quickly revenge them. But yet the Son of man, when he cometh, shall he find, think you, faith on earth?

Dico vobis quia cito faciet vindictam illorum. Verumtamen Filius hominis veniens, putas, inveniet fidem in terra?

I tell you, he will give them redress with all speed. But ah, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith left on the earth?

And to some who trusted in themselves as just, and despised others, he spoke also this parable:

Dixit autem et ad quosdam qui in se confidebant tamquam justi, et aspernabantur ceteros, parabolam istam:

There were some who had confidence in themselves, thinking they had won acceptance with God, and despised the rest of the world; to them he addressed this other parable:

Two men went up into the temple to pray: the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

The Pharisee standing, prayed thus with himself: O God, I give thee thanks that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, as also is this publican.

Pharisæus stans, hæc apud se orabat: Deus, gratias ago tibi, quia non sum sicut ceteri hominum: raptores, injusti, adulteri, velut etiam hic publicanus:

The Pharisee stood upright, and made this prayer in his heart, I thank thee, God, that I am not like the rest of men, who steal and cheat and commit adultery, or like this publican here;

I fast twice in a week: I give tithes of all that I possess.

And the publican, standing afar off, would not so much as lift up his eyes towards heaven; but struck his breast, saying: O God, be merciful to me a sinner.

Et publicanus a longe stans, nolebat nec oculos ad cælum levare: sed percutiebat pectus suum, dicens: Deus propitius esto mihi peccatori.

And the publican stood far off; he would not even lift up his eyes towards heaven; he only beat his breast, and said, God, be merciful to me; I am a sinner.

I say to you, this man went down into his house justified rather than the other: because every one that exalteth himself, shall be humbled: and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted.

Dico vobis, descendit hic justificatus in domum suam ab illo: quia omnis qui se exaltat, humiliabitur, et qui se humiliat, exaltabitur.

I tell you, this man went back home higher in God’s favour than the other; everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and the man who humbles himself shall be exalted.

And they brought unto him also infants, that he might touch them. Which when the disciples saw, they rebuked them.

Afferebant autem ad illum et infantes, ut eos tangeret. Quod cum viderent discipuli, increpabant illos.

Then they brought little children to him, asking him to touch them. The disciples saw them and rebuked them for it:

But Jesus, calling them together, said: Suffer children to come to me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

Jesus autem convocans illos, dixit: Sinite pueros venire ad me, et nolite vetare eos: talium est enim regnum Dei.

but Jesus called the children to him, and said, Let them be, do not keep them back from me; the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

Amen, I say to you: Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a child, shall not enter into it.

Amen dico vobis, quicumque non acceperit regnum Dei sicut puer, non intrabit in illud.

Believe me, the man who does not accept the kingdom of God like a little child, will never enter into it.

And a certain ruler asked him, saying: Good master, what shall I do to possess everlasting life?

Et interrogavit eum quidam princeps, dicens: Magister bone, quid faciens vitam æternam possidebo?

And one of the rulers asked him, Master, who art so good, what must I do to win eternal life?

And Jesus said to him: Why dost thou call me good? None is good but God alone.

Dixit autem ei Jesus: Quid me dicis bonum? nemo bonus nisi solus Deus.

Jesus said to him, Why dost thou call me good? None is good, except God only.

Thou knowest the commandments: Thou shalt not kill: Thou shalt not commit adultery: Thou shalt not steal: Thou shalt not bear false witness: Honour thy father and mother.

Mandata nosti: non occides; non mœchaberis; non furtum facies; non falsum testimonium dices; honora patrem tuum et matrem.

Thou knowest the commandments, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.

Who said: All these things have I kept from my youth.

Qui ait: Hæc omnia custodivi a juventute mea.

I have kept all these, he said, ever since I grew up.

Which when Jesus had heard, he said to him: Yet one thing is wanting to thee: sell all whatever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

Quo audito, Jesus ait ei: Adhuc unum tibi deest: omnia quæcumque habes vende, et da pauperibus, et habebis thesaurum in cælo: et veni, sequere me.

When he heard that, Jesus said, In one thing thou art still wanting; sell all that belongs to thee, and give to the poor; so the treasure thou hast shall be in heaven; then come back and follow me.

He having heard these things, became sorrowful; for he was very rich.

His ille auditis, contristatus est: quia dives erat valde.

The answer filled him with sadness, for he was very rich;

And Jesus seeing him become sorrowful, said: How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God.

Videns autem Jesus illum tristem factum, dixit: Quam difficile, qui pecunias habent, in regnum Dei intrabunt!

and Jesus, seeing his mournful look, said, With what difficulty will those who have riches enter God’s kingdom!

For it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

It is easier for a camel to pass through a needle’s eye, than for a man to enter the kingdom of God when he is rich.

And they that heard it, said: Who then can be saved?

Et dixerunt qui audiebant: Et quis potest salvus fieri?

But when he was asked by those who were listening to him, Why then, who can be saved?

He said to them: The things that are impossible with men, are possible with God.

Ait illis: Quæ impossibilia sunt apud homines, possibilia sunt apud Deum.

he told them, What is impossible to man’s powers is possible to God.

Then Peter said: Behold, we have left all things, and have followed thee.

Ait autem Petrus: Ecce nos dimisimus omnia et secuti sumus te.

Hereupon Peter said, And what of us? we have forsaken all that was ours, and followed thee.

Who said to them: Amen, I say to you, there is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake,

Qui dixit eis: Amen dico vobis, nemo est qui reliquit domum, aut parentes, aut fratres, aut uxorem, aut filios propter regnum Dei,

Jesus said to them, I promise you, everyone who has forsaken home, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children for the sake of the kingdom of God,
30
Who shall not receive much more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.

et non recipiat multo plura in hoc tempore, et in sæculo venturo vitam æternam.

will receive, in this present world, many times their worth, and in the world to come, everlasting life.

Then Jesus took unto him the twelve, and said to them: Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things shall be accomplished which were written by the prophets concerning the Son of man.

Assumpsit autem Jesus duodecim, et ait illis: Ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam, et consummabuntur omnia quæ scripta sunt per prophetas de Filio hominis:

Then he took the twelve apostles aside, and warned them, Now we are going up to Jerusalem, and all that has been written by the prophets about the Son of Man is to be accomplished.

For he shall be delivered to the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and scourged, and spit upon.

tradetur enim gentibus, et illudetur, et flagellabitur, et conspuetur:

He will be given up to the Gentiles, and mocked, and beaten, and spat upon;

And after they have scourged him, they will put him to death; and the third day he shall rise again.

et postquam flagellaverint, occident eum, et tertia die resurget.

they will scourge him, and then they will kill him; but on the third day he will rise again.

And they understood none of these things, and this word was hid from them, and they understood not the things that were said.

Et ipsi nihil horum intellexerunt, et erat verbum istud absconditum ab eis, et non intelligebant quæ dicebantur.

They could make nothing of all this; his meaning was hidden from them, so that they could not understand what he said.

Now it came to pass, when he drew nigh to Jericho, that a certain blind man sat by the way side, begging.

Factum est autem, cum appropinquaret Jericho, cæcus quidam sedebat secus viam, mendicans.

When he came near Jericho, there was a blind man sitting there by the way-side begging.
36
And when he heard the multitude passing by, he asked what this meant.

Et cum audiret turbam prætereuntem, interrogabat quid hoc esset.

And he, hearing a multitude passing by, asked what it meant;

And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.

Dixerunt autem ei quod Jesus Nazarenus transiret.

so they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth was going past.

And he cried out, saying: Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.

Et clamavit, dicens: Jesu, fili David, miserere mei.

Whereupon he cried out, Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.

And they that went before, rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried out much more: Son of David, have mercy on me.

Et qui præibant, increpabant eum ut taceret. Ipse vero multo magis clamabat: Fili David, miserere mei.

Those who were in front rebuked him, and told him to be silent, but he cried out all the more, Son of David, have pity on me.

And Jesus standing, commanded him to be brought unto him. And when he was come near, he asked him,

Stans autem Jesus jussit illum adduci ad se. Et cum appropinquasset, interrogavit illum,

Then Jesus stopped, and gave orders that the man should be brought to him; and when he came close, he asked him,
41
Saying: What wilt thou that I do to thee? But he said: Lord, that I may see.

dicens: Quid tibi vis faciam? At ille dixit: Domine, ut videam.

What wouldst thou have me do for thee? Lord, he said, give me back my sight.

And Jesus said to him: Receive thy sight: thy faith hath made thee whole.

Et Jesus dixit illi: Respice, fides tua te salvum fecit.

Jesus said to him, Receive thy sight; thy faith has brought thee recovery.
43
And immediately he saw, and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Et confestim vidit, et sequebatur illum magnificans Deum. Et omnis plebs ut vidit, dedit laudem Deo.

And at once the man recovered his sight, and followed him, glorifying God; all the people, too, gave praise to God at seeing it.
