1 And he said to his disciples: It is impossible that scandals should not come: but woe to him through whom they come. |
1 And he said to his disciples, It is impossible that hurt should never be done to men’s consciences; but woe betide the man who is the cause of it. |
2 It were better for him, that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should scandalize one of these little ones. |
2 Better for him to have had a mill-stone tied about his neck, and to be cast into the sea, than to have hurt the conscience of one of these little ones. |
3 Attendite vobis: Si peccaverit in te frater tuus, increpa illum: et si pœnitentiam egerit, dimitte illi. |
3 Take heed to yourselves. If thy brother sin against thee, reprove him: and if he do penance, forgive him. |
3 Keep good watch over yourselves. As for thy brother, if he is in fault, tax him with it, and if he is sorry for it, forgive him; |
4 And if he sin against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day be converted unto thee, saying: I repent; forgive him. |
4 nay, if he does thee wrong seven times in the day, and seven times in the day comes back to thee and says, I am sorry, thou shalt forgive him. |
5 Et dixerunt apostoli Domino: Adauge nobis fidem. |
5 And the apostles said to the Lord: Increase our faith. |
5 The apostles said to the Lord, Give us more faith. |
6 Dixit autem Dominus: Si habueritis fidem sicut granum sinapis, dicetis huic arbori moro: Eradicare, et transplantare in mare, et obediet vobis. |
6 And the Lord said: If you had faith like to a grain of mustard seed, you might say to this mulberry tree, Be thou rooted up, and be thou transplanted into the sea: and it would obey you. |
6 And the Lord said, If you had faith, though it were like a grain of mustard seed, you might say to this mulberry tree, Uproot thyself and plant thyself in the sea, and it would obey you. |
7 But which of you, having a servant ploughing, or feeding cattle, will say to him, when he is come from the field: Immediately go, sit down to meat: |
7 If any one of you had a servant following the plough, or herding the sheep, would he say to him, when he came back from the farm, Go and fall to at once? |
8 And will not rather say to him: Make ready my supper, and gird thyself, and serve me, whilst I eat and drink, and afterwards thou shalt eat and drink? |
8 Would he not say to him, Prepare my supper, and then gird thyself and wait upon me while I eat and drink; thou shalt eat and drink thyself afterwards? |
9 Numquid gratiam habet servo illi, quia fecit quæ ei imperaverat? |
9 Doth he thank that servant, for doing the things which he commanded him? |
9 Does he hold himself bound in gratitude to such a servant, for obeying his commands? |
10 I think not. So you also, when you shall have done all these things that are commanded you, say: We are unprofitable servants; we have done that which we ought to do. |
10 I do not think it of him; and you, in the same way, when you have done all that was commanded you, are to say, We are servants, and worthless; it was our duty to do what we have done. |
11 And it came to pass, as he was going to Jerusalem, he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. |
11 A time came when he was on his way to Jerusalem, and was passing between Samaria and Galilee; |
12 And as he entered into a certain town, there met him ten men that were lepers, who stood afar off; |
12 and as he was going into a village, ten men that were lepers came towards him; they stood far off, |
13 et levaverunt vocem, dicentes: Jesu præceptor, miserere nostri. |
13 And lifted up their voice, saying: Jesus, master, have mercy on us. |
13 crying aloud, Jesus, Master, have pity on us. |
14 Quos ut vidit, dixit: Ite, ostendite vos sacerdotibus. Et factum est, dum irent, mundati sunt. |
14 Whom when he saw, he said: Go, shew yourselves to the priests. And it came to pass, as they went, they were made clean. |
14 He met them with the words, Go and shew yourselves to the priests; and thereupon, as they went, they were made clean. |
15 And one of them, when he saw that he was made clean, went back, with a loud voice glorifying God. |
15 One of them, finding that he was cured, came back, praising God aloud, |
16 et cecidit in faciem ante pedes ejus, gratias agens: et hic erat Samaritanus. |
16 And he fell on his face before his feet, giving thanks: and this was a Samaritan. |
16 and threw himself at Jesus’ feet with his face to the ground, to thank him; and this was a Samaritan. |
17 And Jesus answering, said, Were not ten made clean? and where are the nine? |
17 Jesus answered, Were not all ten made clean? And the other nine, where are they? |
18 There is no one found to return and give glory to God, but this stranger. |
18 Not one has come back to give God the praise, except this stranger. |
19 Et ait illi: Surge, vade: quia fides tua te salvum fecit. |
19 And he said to him: Arise, go thy way; for thy faith hath made thee whole. |
19 And he said to him, Arise and go on thy way, thy faith has brought thee recovery. |
20 Interrogatus autem a pharisæis: Quando venit regnum Dei? respondens eis, dixit: Non venit regnum Dei cum observatione: |
20 And being asked by the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come? he answering them, and said: The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: |
20 Upon being asked by the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God was to come, he answered, The kingdom of God comes unwatched by men’s eyes; |
21 neque dicent: Ecce hic, aut ecce illic. Ecce enim regnum Dei intra vos est. |
21 Neither shall they say: Behold here, or behold there. For lo, the kingdom of God is within you. |
21 there will be no saying, See, it is here, or See, it is there; the kingdom of God is here, within you. |
22 And he said to his disciples: The days will come, when you shall desire to see one day of the Son of man; and you shall not see it. |
22 And to his own disciples he said, The time will come when you will long to enjoy, but for a day, the Son of Man’s presence, and it will not be granted you. |
23 Et dicent vobis: Ecce hic, et ecce illic. Nolite ire, neque sectemini: |
23 And they will say to you: See here, and see there. Go ye not after, nor follow them: |
23 Men will be saying to you, See, he is here, or See, he is there; do not turn aside and follow them; |
24 nam, sicut fulgur coruscans de sub cælo in ea quæ sub cælo sunt, fulget: ita erit Filius hominis in die sua. |
24 For as the lightning that lighteneth from under heaven, shineth unto the parts that are under heaven, so shall the Son of man be in his day. |
24 the Son of Man, when his time comes, will be like the lightning which lightens from one border of heaven to the other. |
25 Primum autem oportet illum multa pati, et reprobari a generatione hac. |
25 But first he must suffer many things, and be rejected by this generation. |
25 But before that, he must undergo many sufferings, and be rejected by this generation. |
26 And as it came to pass in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. |
26 In the days when the Son of Man comes, all will be as it was in the days of Noe; |
27 They did eat and drink, they married wives, and were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark: and the flood came and destroyed them all. |
27 they ate, they drank, they married and were given in marriage, until the day when Noe went into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. |
28 Likewise as it came to pass, in the days of Lot: they did eat and drink, they bought and sold, they planted and built. |
28 So it was, too, in the days of Lot; they ate, they drank, they bought and sold, they planted and built; |
29 And in the day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. |
29 but on the day when Lot went out of Sodom, a rain of fire and brimstone came from heaven and destroyed them all. |
30 secundum hæc erit qua die Filius hominis revelabitur. |
30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man shall be revealed. |
30 And so it will be, in the day when the Son of Man is revealed. |
31 In illa hora, qui fuerit in tecto, et vasa ejus in domo, ne descendat tollere illa: et qui in agro, similiter non redeat retro. |
31 In that hour, he that shall be on the housetop, and his goods in the house, let him not go down to take them away: and he that shall be in the field, in like manner, let him not return back. |
31 In that day, if a man is on the house-top and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them with him; and if a man is in the fields, he too must beware of turning back. |
32 Memores estote uxoris Lot. |
32 Remember Lot’s wife. |
32 Remember Lot’s wife. |
33 Quicumque quæsierit animam suam salvam facere, perdet illam: et quicumque perdiderit illam, vivificabit eam. |
33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life, shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose it, shall preserve it. |
33 The man who tries to save his own life will lose it; it is the man who loses it that will keep it safe. |
34 Dico vobis: In illa nocte erunt duo in lecto uno: unus assumetur, et alter relinquetur: |
34 I say to you: In that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. |
34 I tell you, on that night, where two men are sleeping in one bed, one will be taken and the other left; |
35 duæ erunt molentes in unum: una assumetur, et altera relinquetur: duo in agro: unus assumetur, et alter relinquetur. |
35 Two women shall be grinding together: the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left: two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. |
35 one woman taken, one left, as they grind together at the mill, one man taken, one left, as they work together in the fields. |
36 Respondentes dicunt illi: Ubi Domine? |
36 They answering, say to him: Where, Lord? |
36 Then they answered him, Where, Lord? |
37 Who said to them: Wheresoever the body shall be, thither will the eagles also be gathered together. |
37 And he told them, It is where the body lies that the eagles will gather. |
