1 And the whole multitude of them rising up, led him to Pilate. |
1 Then the whole assembly of them rose up and brought him before Pilate, |
2 And they began to accuse him, saying: We have found this man perverting our nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Cæsar, and saying that he is Christ the king. |
2 and there fell to accusing him; We have discovered, they said, that this man is subverting the loyalty of our people, forbids the payment of tribute to Caesar, and calls himself Christ the king. |
3 Pilatus autem interrogavit eum, dicens: Tu es rex Judæorum? At ille respondens ait: Tu dicis. |
3 And Pilate asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Jews? But he answering, said: Thou sayest it. |
3 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the king of the Jews? He answered him, Thy own lips have said it. |
4 And Pilate said to the chief priests and to the multitudes: I find no cause in this man. |
4 Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudes, I cannot discover any fault in this man. |
5 At illi invalescebant, dicentes: Commovet populum docens per universam Judæam, incipiens a Galilæa usque huc. |
5 But they were more earnest, saying: He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place. |
5 But they insisted, He rouses sedition among the people; he has gone round the whole of Judaea preaching, beginning in Galilee and ending here. |
6 But Pilate hearing Galilee, asked if the man were of Galilee? |
6 Pilate, upon the mention of Galilee, asked whether the man was a Galilean; |
7 And when he understood that he was of Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him away to Herod, who was also himself at Jerusalem, in those days. |
7 and learning that he belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, remitted his cause to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at this time. |
8 And Herod seeing Jesus, was very glad; for he was desirous of a long time to see him, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to see some sign wrought by him. |
8 Herod was overjoyed at seeing Jesus; for a long time he had been eager to have sight of him, because he had heard so much of him, and now he hoped to witness some miracle of his. |
9 Interrogabat autem eum multis sermonibus. At ipse nihil illi respondebat. |
9 And he questioned him in many words. But he answered him nothing. |
9 He asked him many questions, but could get no answer from him, |
10 And the chief priests and the scribes stood by, earnestly accusing him. |
10 although the chief priests and scribes stood there, loudly accusing him. |
11 And Herod with his army set him at nought, and mocked him, putting on him a white garment, and sent him back to Pilate. |
11 So Herod and his attendants made a jest of him, arraying him in festal attire out of mockery, and sent him back to Pilate. |
12 And Herod and Pilate were made friends, that same day; for before they were enemies one to another. |
12 That day Herod and Pilate, who had hitherto been at enmity with one another, became friends. |
13 And Pilate, calling together the chief priests, and the magistrates, and the people, |
13 And now Pilate summoned the chief priests, and the rulers, and the people, |
14 dixit ad illos: Obtulistis mihi hunc hominem, quasi avertentem populum, et ecce ego coram vobis interrogans, nullam causam inveni in homine isto ex his in quibus eum accusatis. |
14 Said to them: You have presented unto me this man, as one that perverteth the people; and behold I, having examined him before you, find no cause in this man, in those things wherein you accuse him. |
14 and said to them, You have brought this man before me as one who seduces the people from their allegiance; I examined him in your presence, and could find no substance in any of the charges you bring against him; |
15 No, nor Herod neither. For I sent you to him, and behold, nothing worthy of death is done to him. |
15 nor could Herod, when I referred you to him. It is plain that he has done nothing which deserves death. |
16 Emendatum ergo illum dimittam. |
16 I will chastise him therefore, and release him. |
16 I will scourge him, and then he shall go free. |
17 Now of necessity he was to release unto them one upon the feast day. |
17 At the festival, he was obliged to grant them the liberty of one prisoner: |
18 But the whole multitude together cried out, saying: Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas: |
18 but the whole concourse raised the cry, Away with this man; we must have Barabbas released. |
19 qui erat propter seditionem quamdam factam in civitate et homicidium missus in carcerem. |
19 Who, for a certain sedition made in the city, and for a murder, was cast into prison. |
19 (Barabbas was a man who had been thrown into prison for raising a revolt in the city, and for murder.) |
20 And Pilate again spoke to them, desiring to release Jesus. |
20 Once more Pilate spoke to them, offering to set Jesus at liberty; |
21 At illi succlamabant, dicentes: Crucifige, crucifige eum. |
21 But they cried again, saying: Crucify him, crucify him. |
21 but they continued to answer with shouts of, Crucify him, crucify him. |
22 And he said to them the third time: Why, what evil hath this man done? I find no cause of death in him. I will chastise him therefore, and let him go. |
22 Then for the third time he said to them, Why, what wrong has he done? I can find no fault in him that deserves death; I will scourge him, and then he shall go free. |
23 At illi instabant vocibus magnis postulantes ut crucifigeretur: et invalescebant voces eorum. |
23 But they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified; and their voices prevailed. |
23 But they, with loud cries, insisted on their demand that he should be crucified; and their voices carried the day; |
24 Et Pilatus adjudicavit fieri petitionem eorum. |
24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required. |
24 Pilate gave his assent that their request should be granted, |
25 And he released unto them him who for murder and sedition, had been cast into prison, whom they had desired; but Jesus he delivered up to their will. |
25 releasing the man of their choice who had been imprisoned for revolt and murder, while he handed Jesus over to their will. |
26 And as they led him away, they laid hold of one Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country; and they laid the cross on him to carry after Jesus. |
26 As they led him off, they caught hold of a man called Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and loaded him with the cross, so that he should carry it after Jesus. |
27 And there followed him a great multitude of people, and of women, who bewailed and lamented him. |
27 Jesus was followed by a great multitude of the people, and also of women, who beat their breasts and mourned over him; |
28 But Jesus turning to them, said: Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not over me; but weep for yourselves, and for your children. |
28 but he turned to them, and said, It is not for me that you should weep, daughters of Jerusalem; you should weep for yourselves and your children. |
29 For behold, the days shall come, wherein they will say: Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the paps that have not given suck. |
29 Behold, a time is coming when men will say, It is well for the barren, for the wombs that never bore children, and the breasts that never suckled them. |
30 Tunc incipient dicere montibus: Cadite super nos; et collibus: Operite nos. |
30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains: Fall upon us; and to the hills: Cover us. |
30 It is then that they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us, and to the hills, Cover us. |
31 Quia si in viridi ligno hæc faciunt, in arido quid fiet? |
31 For if in the green wood they do these things, what shall be done in the dry? |
31 If it goes so hard with the tree that is still green, what will become of the tree that is already dried up? |
32 And there were also two other malefactors led with him to be put to death. |
32 Two others, who were criminals, were led off with him to be put to death. |
33 And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, they crucified him there; and the robbers, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. |
33 And when they reached the place which is named after a skull, they crucified him there; and also the two criminals, one on his right and the other on his left. |
Dividentes vero vestimenta ejus, miserunt sortes. |
34 And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. But they, dividing his garments, cast lots. |
34 Jesus meanwhile was saying, Father, forgive them; they do not know what it is they are doing. And they divided his garments among themselves by lot. |
35 And the people stood beholding, and the rulers with them derided him, saying: He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the elect of God. |
35 The people stood by, watching; and the rulers joined them in pouring scorn on him; He saved others, they said; if he is the Christ, God’s chosen, let him save himself. |
36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, |
36 The soldiers, too, mocked him, when they came and offered him vinegar, |
37 et dicentes: Si tu es rex Judæorum, salvum te fac. |
37 And saying: If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. |
37 by saying, If thou art the king of the Jews, save thyself. |
38 And there was also a superscription written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. |
38 (A proclamation had been written up over him in Greek, Latin and Hebrew, This is the king of the Jews.) |
39 And one of those robbers who were hanged blasphemed him, saying: If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. |
39 And one of the two thieves who hung there fell to blaspheming against him; Save thyself, he said, and us too, if thou art the Christ. |
40 Respondens autem alter increpabat eum, dicens: Neque tu times Deum, quod in eadem damnatione es. |
40 But the other answering, rebuked him, saying: Neither dost thou fear God, seeing thou art under the same condemnation? |
40 But the other rebuked him; What, he said, hast thou no fear of God, when thou art undergoing the same sentence? |
41 Et nos quidem juste, nam digna factis recipimus: hic vero nihil mali gessit. |
41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man hath done no evil. |
41 And we justly enough; we receive no more than the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing amiss. |
42 And he said to Jesus: Lord, remember me when thou shalt come into thy kingdom. |
42 Then he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. |
43 Et dixit illi Jesus: Amen dico tibi: hodie mecum eris in paradiso. |
43 And Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise. |
43 And Jesus said to him, I promise thee, this day thou shalt be with me in Paradise. |
44 And it was almost the sixth hour; and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. |
44 It was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. |
45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. |
45 The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in the midst: |
46 Et clamans voce magna Jesus ait: Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum. Et hæc dicens, expiravit. |
46 And Jesus crying with a loud voice, said: Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. And saying this, he gave up the ghost. |
46 and Jesus said, crying with a loud voice, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit; and yielded up his spirit as he said it. |
47 Videns autem centurio quod factum fuerat, glorificavit Deum, dicens: Vere hic homo justus erat. |
47 Now the centurion, seeing what was done, glorified God, saying: Indeed this was a just man. |
47 And the centurion, when he saw what befell, gave glory to God; This, he said, was indeed a just man. |
48 And all the multitude of them that were come together to that sight, and saw the things that were done, returned striking their breasts. |
48 And the whole multitude of those who stood there watching it, when they saw the issue, went home beating their breasts. |
49 Stabant autem omnes noti ejus a longe, et mulieres, quæ secutæ eum erant a Galilæa, hæc videntes. |
49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that had followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things. |
49 All his acquaintances, with the women who had followed him from Galilee, watched while this happened, standing at a distance. |
50 And behold there was a man named Joseph, who was a counsellor, a good and a just man, |
50 And now a man called Joseph came forward, one of the councillors, a good and upright man, |
51 (The same had not consented to their counsel and doings;) of Arimathea, a city of Judea; who also himself looked for the kingdom of God. |
51 who had not taken part with the council and its doings; he was from Arimathea, a Jewish city, and was one of those who waited for the kingdom of God. |
52 This man went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. |
52 He it was who approached Pilate, and asked to have the body of Jesus. |
53 et depositum involvit sindone, et posuit eum in monumento exciso, in quo nondum quisquam positus fuerat. |
53 And taking him down, he wrapped him in fine linen, and laid him in a sepulchre that was hewed in stone, wherein never yet any man had been laid. |
53 This he took, and wrapped it in a winding-sheet, and laid it in a tomb fashioned out of the rock, in which no man had ever been buried. |
54 Et dies erat parasceves, et sabbatum illucescebat. |
54 And it was the day of the Parasceve, and the sabbath drew on. |
54 It was the day of preparation; the next day was the sabbath. |
55 And the women that were come with him from Galilee, following after, saw the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. |
55 And the women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and saw the tomb, and how his body was buried; |
56 Et revertentes paraverunt aromata, et unguenta: et sabbato quidem siluerunt secundum mandatum. |
56 And returning, they prepared spices and ointments; and on the sabbath day they rested, according to the commandment. |
56 so they went back, and prepared spices and ointments, and while it was the sabbath they kept still, as the law commanded. |
