Multis autem turbis circumstantibus, ita ut se invicem conculcarent, cœpit dicere ad discipulos suos: Attendite a fermento pharisæorum, quod est hypocrisis.

And when great multitudes stood about him, so that they trod one upon another, he began to say to his disciples: Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

And now great multitudes had gathered round him, so that they trod one another down; and he addressed himself first to his disciples; Have nothing to do with the leaven of the Pharisees, he said, it is all hypocrisy.

Nihil autem opertum est, quod non reveletur: neque absconditum, quod non sciatur.
2
For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed: nor hidden, that shall not be known.
2
What is veiled will all be revealed, what is hidden will all be known;
3
Quoniam quæ in tenebris dixistis, in lumine dicentur: et quod in aurem locuti estis in cubiculis, prædicabitur in tectis.
3
For whatsoever things you have spoken in darkness, shall be published in the light: and that which you have spoken in the ear in the chambers, shall be preached on the housetops.

what you have said in darkness, will be repeated in the light of day, what you have whispered in secret chambers, will be proclaimed on the house-tops.
4
Dico autem vobis amicis meis: Ne terreamini ab his qui occidunt corpus, et post hæc non habent amplius quid faciant.

And I say to you, my friends: Be not afraid of them who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

And I say this to you who are my friends, Do not be afraid of those who can kill the body, and after that can do no more.

Ostendam autem vobis quem timeatis: timete eum qui, postquam occiderit, habet potestatem mittere in gehennam: ita dico vobis, hunc timete.

But I will shew you whom you shall fear: fear ye him, who after he hath killed, hath power to cast into hell. Yea, I say to you, fear him.

I will tell you who it is you must fear; fear him who has power not only to kill but to cast a man into hell; him you must fear indeed.

Nonne quinque passeres veneunt dipondio, et unus ex illis non est in oblivione coram Deo?
6
Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
6
Are not sparrows sold five for two pence? And yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight.
7
sed et capilli capitis vestri omnes numerati sunt. Nolite ergo timere: multis passeribus pluris estis vos.
7
Yea, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: you are of more value than many sparrows.
7
As for you, he takes every hair of your head into his reckoning; do not be afraid, then; you count for more than a host of sparrows.

Dico autem vobis: Omnis quicumque confessus fuerit me coram hominibus, et Filius hominis confitebitur illum coram angelis Dei:

And I say to you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God.

And I tell you this; whoever acknowledges me before men, will be acknowledged by the Son of Man in the presence of God’s angels;
9
qui autem negaverit me coram hominibus, negabitur coram angelis Dei.
9
But he that shall deny me before men, shall be denied before the angels of God.
9
he who disowns me before men, will be disowned before God’s angels.
10
Et omnis qui dicit verbum in Filium hominis, remittetur illi: ei autem qui in Spiritum Sanctum blasphemaverit, non remittetur.

And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but to him that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven.

There is no one who speaks a word against the Son of Man but may find forgiveness; there will be no forgiveness for the man who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit.

Cum autem inducent vos in synagogas, et ad magistratus, et potestates, nolite solliciti esse qualiter, aut quid respondeatis, aut quid dicatis.

And when they shall bring you into the synagogues, and to magistrates and powers, be not solicitous how or what you shall answer, or what you shall say;
11
When they bring you to trial before synagogues, and magistrates, and officers, do not consider anxiously what you are to say, what defence to make or how to make it;
12
Spiritus enim Sanctus docebit vos in ipsa hora quid oporteat vos dicere.
12
For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what you must say.
12
the Holy Spirit will instruct you when the time comes, what words to use.

Ait autem ei quidam de turba: Magister, dic fratri meo ut dividat mecum hæreditatem.
13
And one of the multitude said to him: Master, speak to my brother that he divide the inheritance with me.
13
One of the multitude said to him, Master, bid my brother give me a share of our inheritance.
14
At ille dixit illi: Homo, quis me constituit judicem, aut divisorem super vos?
14
But he said to him: Man, who hath appointed me judge, or divider, over you?
14
And he answered, Why, man, who has appointed me a judge to make awards between you?
15
Dixitque ad illos: Videte, et cavete ab omni avaritia: quia non in abundantia cujusquam vita ejus est ex his quæ possidet.
15
And he said to them: Take heed and beware of all covetousness; for a man’s life doth not consist in the abundance of things which he possesseth.
15
Then he said to them, Look well and keep yourselves clear of all covetousness. A man’s life does not consist in having more possessions than he needs.
16
Dixit autem similitudinem ad illos, dicens: Hominis cujusdam divitis uberes fructus ager attulit:

And he spoke a similitude to them, saying: The land of a certain rich man brought forth plenty of fruits.

And he told them a parable, There was a rich man whose lands yielded a heavy crop:
17
et cogitabat intra se dicens: Quid faciam, quia non habeo quo congregem fructus meos?
17
And he thought within himself, saying: What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
17
and he debated in his mind, What am I to do, with no room to store my crops in?
18
Et dixit: Hoc faciam: destruam horrea mea, et majora faciam: et illuc congregabo omnia quæ nata sunt mihi, et bona mea,
18
And he said: This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and will build greater; and into them will I gather all things that are grown to me, and my goods.
18
Then he said, This is what I will do; I will pull down my barns, and build greater ones, and there I shall be able to store all my harvest and all the goods that are mine;
19
et dicam animæ meæ: Anima, habes multa bona posita in annos plurimos: requiesce, comede, bibe, epulare.
19
And I will say to my soul: Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years take thy rest; eat, drink, make good cheer.
19
and then I will say to my soul, Come, soul, thou hast goods in plenty laid up for many years to come; take thy rest now, eat, drink, and make merry.
20
Dixit autem illi Deus: Stulte, hac nocte animam tuam repetunt a te: quæ autem parasti, cujus erunt?
20
But God said to him: Thou fool, this night do they require thy soul of thee: and whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?
20
And God said, Thou fool, this night thou must render up thy soul; and who will be master now of all thou hast laid by?
21
Sic est qui sibi thesaurizat, et non est in Deum dives.
21
So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich towards God.
21
Thus it is with the man who lays up treasure for himself, and has no credit with God.
22
Dixitque ad discipulos suos: Ideo dico vobis, nolite solliciti esse animæ vestræ quid manducetis, neque corpori quid induamini.
22
And he said to his disciples: Therefore I say to you, be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat; nor for your body, what you shall put on.
22
Then he said to his disciples, I say to you, then, do not fret over your life, how to support it with food, over your body, how to keep it clothed.
23
Anima plus est quam esca, et corpus plus quam vestimentum.
23
The life is more than the meat, and the body is more than the raiment.
23
Life is a greater gift than food, the body than clothing;
24
Considerate corvos, quia non seminant, neque metunt, quibus non est cellarium, neque horreum, et Deus pascit illos. Quanto magis vos pluris estis illis?
24
Consider the ravens, for they sow not, neither do they reap, neither have they storehouse nor barn, and God feedeth them. How much are you more valuable than they?
24
see how the ravens never sow or reap, have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them; have you not an excellence far beyond theirs?
25
Quis autem vestrum cogitando potest adjicere ad staturam suam cubitum unum?
25
And which of you, by taking thought, can add to his stature one cubit?
25
Can any of you, for all his fretting, add a cubit’s growth to his height?
26
Si ergo neque quod minimum est potestis, quid de ceteris solliciti estis?
26
If then ye be not able to do so much as the least thing, why are you solicitous for the rest?
26
And if you are powerless to do so small a thing, why do you fret about your other needs?
27
Considerate lilia quomodo crescunt: non laborant, neque nent: dico autem vobis, nec Salomon in omni gloria sua vestiebatur sicut unum ex istis.
27
Consider the lilies, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin. But I say to you, not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these.

See how the lilies grow; they do not toil, or spin, and yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
28
Si autem fœnum, quod hodie est in agro, et cras in clibanum mittitur, Deus sic vestit: quanto magis vos pusillæ fidei?
28
Now if God clothe in this manner the grass that is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more you, O ye of little faith?
28
If God, then, so clothes the grasses which live to-day in the fields and will feed the oven to-morrow, will he not be much more ready to clothe you, men of little faith?
29
Et vos nolite quærere quid manducetis, aut quid bibatis: et nolite in sublime tolli:
29
And seek not you what you shall eat, or what you shall drink: and be not lifted up on high.
29
You should not be asking, then, what you are to eat or drink, and living in suspense of mind;
30
hæc enim omnia gentes mundi quærunt. Pater autem vester scit quoniam his indigetis.
30
For all these things do the nations of the world seek. But your Father knoweth that you have need of these things.
30
it is for the heathen world to busy itself over such things; your Father knows well that you need them.
31
Verumtamen quærite primum regnum Dei, et justitiam ejus: et hæc omnia adjicientur vobis.
31
But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you.
31
No, make it your first care to find the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be yours without the asking.
32
Nolite timere pusillus grex, quia complacuit Patri vestro dare vobis regnum.
32
Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom.
32
Do not be afraid, you, my little flock. Your Father has determined to give you his kingdom.
33
Vendite quæ possidetis, et date eleemosynam. Facite vobis sacculos, qui non veterascunt, thesaurum non deficientem in cælis: quo fur non appropriat, neque tinea corrumpit.
33
Sell what you possess and give alms. Make to yourselves bags which grow not old, a treasure in heaven which faileth not: where no thief approacheth, nor moth corrupteth.

Sell what you have, and give alms, so providing yourselves with a purse that time cannot wear holes in, an inexhaustible treasure laid up in heaven, where no thief comes near, no moth consumes.

Ubi enim thesaurus vester est, ibi et cor vestrum erit.

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
34
Where your treasure-house is, there your heart is too.
35
Sint lumbi vestri præcincti, et lucernæ ardentes in manibus vestris,

Let your loins be girt, and lamps burning in your hands.
35
Your loins must be girt, and your lamps burning,
36
et vos similes hominibus exspectantibus dominum suum quando revertatur a nuptiis: ut, cum venerit et pulsaverit, confestim aperiant ei.

And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately.
36
and you yourselves like men awaiting their master’s return from a wedding feast, so that they may open to him at once when he comes and knocks at the door.

Beati servi illi quos, cum venerit dominus, invenerit vigilantes: amen dico vobis, quod præcinget se, et faciet illos discumbere, et transiens ministrabit illis.

Blessed are those servants, whom the Lord when he cometh, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, that he will gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and passing will minister unto them.

Blessed are those servants, whom their master will find watching when he comes; I promise you, he will gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and minister to them.
38
Et si venerit in secunda vigilia, et si in tertia vigilia venerit, et ita invenerit, beati sunt servi illi.

And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.
38
Whether he comes in the second quarter of the night or in the third, blessed are those servants if he finds them alert.
39
Hoc autem scitote, quoniam si sciret paterfamilias, qua hora fur veniret, vigilaret utique, et non sineret perfodi domum suam.

But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch, and would not suffer his house to be broken open.
39
Be sure of this; if the master of the house had known at what time the thief was coming, he would have kept watch, and not allowed his house to be broken open.
40
Et vos estote parati: quia qua hora non putatis, Filius hominis veniet.
40
Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not, the Son of man will come.
40
You too, then, must stand ready; the Son of Man will come at an hour when you are not expecting him.
41
Ait autem ei Petrus: Domine, ad nos dicis hanc parabolam, an et ad omnes?
41
And Peter said to him: Lord, dost thou speak this parable to us, or likewise to all?
41
Hereupon Peter said to him, Lord, dost thou address this parable to us, or to all men?
42
Dixit autem Dominus: Quis, putas, est fidelis dispensator, et prudens, quem constituit dominus supra familiam suam, ut det illis in tempore tritici mensuram?

And the Lord said: Who (thinkest thou) is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord setteth over his family, to give them their measure of wheat in due season?

And the Lord answered, Who, then, is a faithful and wise steward, one whom his master will entrust with the care of the household, to give them their allowance of food at the appointed time?

Beatus ille servus quem, cum venerit dominus, invenerit ita facientem.
43
Blessed is that servant, whom when his lord shall come, he shall find so doing.
43
Blessed is that servant who is found doing this when his lord comes;
44
Vere dico vobis, quoniam supra omnia quæ possidet, constituet illum.
44
Verily I say to you, he will set him over all that he possesseth.
44
I promise you, he will give him charge of all his goods.
45
Quod si dixerit servus ille in corde suo: Moram facit dominus meus venire: et cœperit percutere servos, et ancillas, et edere, et bibere, et inebriari:
45
But if that servant shall say in his heart: My Lord is long a coming; and shall begin to strike the menservants and maidservants, and to eat and to drink and be drunk:
45
But if that servant says in his heart, My lord is long in coming, and falls to beating the men and the maids, eating and drinking himself drunk;
46
veniet dominus servi illius in die qua non sperat, et hora qua nescit, et dividet eum, partemque ejus cum infidelibus ponet.
46
The lord of that servant will come in the day that he hopeth not, and at the hour that he knoweth not, and shall separate him, and shall appoint him his portion with unbelievers.
46
then on some day when he expects nothing, at an hour when he is all unaware, his lord will come, and will cut him off, and assign him his portion with the unfaithful.
47
Ille autem servus qui cognovit voluntatem domini sui, et non præparavit, et non facit secundum voluntatem ejus, vapulabit multis:
47
And that servant who knew the will of his lord, and prepared not himself, and did not according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.
47
Yet it is the servant who knew his Lord’s will, and did not make ready for him, or do his will, that will have many strokes of the lash;
48
qui autem non cognovit, et fecit digna plagis, vapulabit paucis. Omni autem cui multum datum est, multum quæretur ab eo: et cui commendaverunt multum, plus petent ab eo.

But he that knew not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. And unto whomsoever much is given, of him much shall be required: and to whom they have committed much, of him they will demand the more.

he who did not know of it, yet earned a beating, will have only a few. Much will be asked of the man to whom much has been given; more will be expected of him, because he was entrusted with more.

Ignem veni mittere in terram, et quid volo nisi ut accendatur?

I am come to cast fire on the earth: and what will I, but that it be kindled?
49
It is fire that I have come to spread over the earth, and what better wish can I have than that it should be kindled?

Baptismo autem habeo baptizari: et quomodo coarctor usque dum perficiatur?

And I have a baptism wherewith I am to be baptized: and how am I straitened until it be accomplished?
50
There is a baptism I must needs be baptized with, and how impatient am I for its accomplishment!

Putatis quia pacem veni dare in terram? non, dico vobis, sed separationem:

Think ye, that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, no; but separation.
51
Do you think that I have come to bring peace on the earth? No, believe me, I have come to bring dissension.

erunt enim ex hoc quinque in domo una divisi, tres in duos, et duo in tres
52
For there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided: three against two, and two against three.
52
Henceforward five in the same house will be found at variance, three against two and two against three;

dividentur: pater in filium, et filius in patrem suum, mater in filiam, et filia in matrem, socrus in nurum suam, et nurus in socrum suam.

The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against his father, the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against her mother, the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

the father will be at variance with his son, and the son with his father, the mother against her daughter, and the daughter against her mother, the mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

Dicebat autem et ad turbas: Cum videritis nubem orientem ab occasu, statim dicitis: Nimbus venit: et ita fit.

And he said also to the multitudes: When you see a cloud rising from the west, presently you say: A shower is coming: and so it happeneth:

And he said to the multitudes, When you find a cloud rising out of the west, you say at once, There is rain coming, and so it does;
55
Et cum austrum flantem, dicitis: Quia æstus erit: et fit.

And when ye see the south wind blow, you say: There will be heat: and it cometh to pass.
55
when you find the south-west wind blowing, you say, It will be hot, and so it is.

Hypocritæ! faciem cæli et terræ nostis probare: hoc autem tempus quomodo non probatis?

You hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of the heaven and of the earth: but how is it that you do not discern this time?
56
Poor fools, you know well enough how to interpret the face of land and sky; can you not interpret the times you live in?
57
quid autem et a vobis ipsis non judicatis quod justum est?
57
And why even of yourselves, do you not judge that which is just?
57
Does not your own experience teach you to make the right decision?
58
Cum autem vadis cum adversario tuo ad principem, in via da operam liberari ab illo, ne forte trahat te ad judicem, et judex tradat te exactori, et exactor mittat te in carcerem.

And when thou goest with thy adversary to the prince, whilst thou art in the way, endeavour to be delivered from him: lest perhaps he draw thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the exacter, and the exacter cast thee into prison.

If one has a claim against thee, and thou art going with him to the magistrate, then do thy utmost, while thou art still on the road, to be quit of his claim; or it may be he will drag thee into the presence of the judge, and the judge will hand thee over to his officer, and the officer will cast thee into prison.

Dico tibi, non exies inde, donec etiam novissimum minutum reddas.

I say to thee, thou shalt not go out thence, until thou pay the very last mite.

Be sure of this, thou wilt find no discharge from it until thou hast paid the last farthing.
