Aderant autem quidam ipso in tempore, nuntiantes illi de Galilæis, quorum sanguinem Pilatus miscuit cum sacrificiis eorum.

And there were present, at that very time, some that told him of the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

At this very time there were some present that told him the story of those Gali-leans, whose blood Pilate had shed in the midst of their sacrifices.

Et respondens dixit illis: Putatis quod hi Galilæi præ omnibus Galilæis peccatores fuerint, quia talia passi sunt?

And he answering, said to them: Think you that these Galileans were sinners above all the men of Galilee, because they suffered such things?

And Jesus said in answer, Do you suppose, because this befell them, that these men were worse sinners than all else in Galilee?

Non, dico vobis: sed nisi pœnitentiam habueritis, omnes similiter peribitis.

No, I say to you: but unless you shall do penance, you shall all likewise perish.

I tell you it is not so; you will all perish as they did, if you do not repent.

Sicut illi decem et octo, supra quos cecidit turris in Siloë, et occidit eos: putatis quia et ipsi debitores fuerint præter omnes homines habitantes in Jerusalem?

Or those eighteen upon whom the tower fell in Siloe, and slew them: think you, that they also were debtors above all the men that dwelt in Jerusalem?

What of those eighteen men on whom the tower fell in Siloe, and killed them; do you suppose that there was a heavier account against them, than against any others who then dwelt at Jerusalem?

Non, dico vobis: sed si pœnitentiam non egeritis, omnes similiter peribitis.

No, I say to you; but except you do penance, you shall all likewise perish.

I tell you it was not so; you will all perish as they did, if you do not repent.

Dicebat autem et hanc similitudinem: Arborem fici habebat quidam plantatam in vinea sua, et venit quærens fructum in illa, et non invenit.

He spoke also this parable: A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it, and found none.

And this was a parable he told them; There was a man that had a fig-tree planted in his vineyard, but when he came and looked for fruit on it, he could find none;

Dixit autem ad cultorem vineæ: Ecce anni tres sunt ex quo venio quærens fructum in ficulnea hac, et non invenio: succide ergo illam: ut quid etiam terram occupat?

And he said to the dresser of the vineyard: Behold, for these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down therefore: why cumbereth it the ground?

whereupon he said to his vine-dresser, See now, I have been coming to look for fruit on this fig-tree for three years, and cannot find any. Cut it down; why should it be a useless charge upon the land?

At ille respondens, dicit illi: Domine dimitte illam et hoc anno, usque dum fodiam circa illam, et mittam stercora,

But he answering, said to him: Lord, let it alone this year also, until I dig about it, and dung it.

But he answered thus, Sir, let it stand this year too, so that I may have time to dig and put dung round it;

et siquidem fecerit fructum: sin autem, in futurum succides eam.

And if happily it bear fruit: but if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

perhaps it will bear fruit; if not, it will be time to cut it down then.

Erat autem docens in synagoga eorum sabbatis.

And he was teaching in their synagogue on their sabbath.

There was a sabbath day on which he was preaching in one of their synagogues.

Et ecce mulier, quæ habebat spiritum infirmitatis annis decem et octo: et erat inclinata, nec omnino poterat sursum respicere.

And behold there was a woman, who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years: and she was bowed together, neither could she look upwards at all.

Here there was a woman who for eighteen years had suffered under some influence that disabled her; she was bent down, and could not lift her head straight.

Quam cum videret Jesus, vocavit eam ad se, et ait illi: Mulier, dimissa es ab infirmitate tua.

Whom when Jesus saw, he called her unto him, and said to her: Woman, thou art delivered from thy infirmity.

Jesus saw her and called her to him; Woman, he said, thou art rid of thy infirmity.

Et imposuit illi manus, et confestim erecta est, et glorificabat Deum.

And he laid his hands upon her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

Then he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was raised upright, and gave praise to God.

Respondens autem archisynagogus, indignans quia sabbato curasset Jesus, dicebat turbæ: Sex dies sunt in quibus oportet operari: in his ergo venite, et curamini, et non in die sabbati.

And the ruler of the synagogue (being angry that Jesus had healed on the sabbath) answering, said to the multitude: Six days there are wherein you ought to work. In them therefore come, and be healed; and not on the sabbath day.

But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant that Jesus should heal them on the sabbath day, turned and said to the multitude, You have six days on which work is allowed; you should come and be healed on those days, not on the sabbath.

Respondens autem ad illum Dominus, dixit: Hypocritæ, unusquisque vestrum sabbato non solvit bovem suum, aut asinum a præsepio, et ducit adaquare?

And the Lord answering him, said: Ye hypocrites, doth not every one of you, on the sabbath day, loose his ox or his ass from the manger, and lead them to water?

And the Lord gave him this answer, What, you hypocrites, is there any one of you that will not untie his ox or his ass from the stall and take them down to water, when it is the sabbath?

Hanc autem filiam Abrahæ, quam alligavit Satanas, ecce decem et octo annis, non oportuit solvi a vinculo isto die sabbati?

And ought not this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

And here is this daughter of Abraham, whom Satan had kept bound these eighteen years past; was it wrong that she should be delivered on the sabbath day from bonds like these?

Et cum hæc diceret, erubescebant omnes adversarii ejus: et omnis populus gaudebat in universis, quæ gloriose fiebant ab eo.

And when he said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the things that were gloriously done by him.

All his adversaries were put to shame by this saying of his, and the whole multitude rejoiced over the marvellous works he did.

Dicebat ergo: Cui simile est regnum Dei, et cui simile æstimabo illud?

He said therefore: To what is the kingdom of God like, and whereunto shall I resemble it?

He said, What is there that bears a likeness to the kingdom of heaven; what comparison shall I find for it?

Simile est grano sinapis, quod acceptum homo misit in hortum suum, et crevit, et factum est in arborem magnam: et volucres cæli requieverunt in ramis ejus.

It is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and cast into his garden, and it grew and became a great tree, and the birds of the air lodged in the branches thereof.

Et iterum dixit: Cui simile æstimabo regnum Dei?

And again he said: Whereunto shall I esteem the kingdom of God to be like?

And again, he said, What comparison shall I find for the kingdom of heaven?

Et ibat per civitates et castella, docens, et iter faciens in Jerusalem.

And he went through the cities and towns teaching, and making his journey to Jerusalem.

Ait autem illi quidam: Domine, si pauci sunt, qui salvantur? Ipse autem dixit ad illos:

And a certain man said to him: Lord, are they few that are saved? But he said to them:

There was a man that said to him, Lord, is it only a few that are to be saved? Whereupon he said to them:

Contendite intrare per angustam portam: quia multi, dico vobis, quærent intrare, et non poterunt.

Strive to enter by the narrow gate; for many, I say to you, shall seek to enter, and shall not be able.

Fight your way in at the narrow door; I tell you, there are many who will try and will not be able to enter.

Cum autem intraverit paterfamilias, et clauserit ostium, incipietis foris stare, et pulsare ostium, dicentes: Domine, aperi nobis: et respondens dicet vobis: Nescio vos unde sitis:

But when the master of the house shall be gone in, and shall shut the door, you shall begin to stand without, and knock at the door, saying: Lord, open to us. And he answering, shall say to you: I know you not, whence you are.

When the master of the house has gone in and has shut the door, you will fall to beating on the door as you stand without, and saying, Lord, open to us. But this will be his answer, I know nothing of you, nor whence you come.

tunc incipietis dicere: Manducavimus coram te, et bibimus, et in plateis nostris docuisti.

Then you shall begin to say: We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.

Thereupon you will fall to protesting, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence; thou hast taught in our streets.

Et dicet vobis: Nescio vos unde sitis: discedite a me omnes operarii iniquitatis.

And he shall say to you: I know you not, whence you are: depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.

But he will say, I tell you, I know nothing of you, nor whence you come; depart from me, you that traffic in iniquity.

Ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium: cum videritis Abraham, et Isaac, et Jacob, et omnes prophetas in regno Dei, vos autem expelli foras.

There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

Weeping shall be there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets within God’s kingdom, while you yourselves are cast out.

Et venient ab oriente, et occidente, et aquilone, et austro, et accumbent in regno Dei.

And there shall come from the east and the west, and the north and the south; and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.

Others will come from the east and the west, the north and the south, to take their ease in the kingdom of God.

Et ecce sunt novissimi qui erunt primi, et sunt primi qui erunt novissimi.

And behold, they are last that shall be first; and they are first that shall be last.

And indeed, there are some who are last, and shall then be first, some who are first, and shall then be last.

In ipsa die accesserunt quidam pharisæorum, dicentes illi: Exi, et vade hinc: quia Herodes vult te occidere.

The same day, there came some of the Pharisees, saying to him: Depart, and get thee hence, for Herod hath a mind to kill thee.

It was on that day that some of the Pharisees came to him and said, Go elsewhere, and leave this place; Herod has a mind to kill thee.

Et ait illis: Ite, et dicite vulpi illi: Ecce ejicio dæmonia, et sanitates perficio hodie, et cras, et tertia die consummor.

And he said to them: Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I am consummated.

And he said to them, Go and tell that fox, Behold, to-day and to-morrow I am to continue casting out devils, and doing works of healing; it is on the third day that I am to reach my consummation.

Verumtamen oportet me hodie et cras et sequenti die ambulare: quia non capit prophetam perire extra Jerusalem.

Nevertheless I must walk to day and to morrow, and the day following, because it cannot be that a prophet perish, out of Jerusalem.

But to-day and to-morrow and the next day I must go on my journeys; there is no room for a prophet to meet his death, except at Jerusalem.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, quæ occidis prophetas, et lapidas eos qui mittuntur ad te, quoties volui congregare filios tuos quemadmodum avis nidum suum sub pennis, et noluisti?

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent to thee, how often would I have gathered thy children as the bird doth her brood under her wings, and thou wouldest not?

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, still murdering the prophets, and stoning the messengers that are sent to thee, how often have I been ready to gather thy children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and thou didst refuse it!

Ecce relinquetur vobis domus vestra deserta. Dico autem vobis, quia non videbitis me donec veniat cum dicetis: Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.

Behold your house shall be left to you desolate. And I say to you, that you shall not see me till the time come, when you shall say: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Behold, your house is left to you, a house uninhabited. I tell you, you shall see nothing of me until the time comes, when you will be saying, Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord.
