Factum est autem, cum turbæ irruerunt in eum ut audirent verbum Dei, et ipse stabat secus stagnum Genesareth.

It happened that he was standing by the lake of Genesareth, at a time when the multitude was pressing close about him to hear the word of God;

And it came to pass, that when the multitudes pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Genesareth,

Et vidit duas naves stantes secus stagnum: piscatores autem descenderant, et lavabant retia.

and he saw two boats moored at the edge of the lake; the fishermen had gone ashore, and were washing their nets.

And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.

Ascendens autem in unam navim, quæ erat Simonis, rogavit eum a terra reducere pusillum. Et sedens docebat de navicula turbas.

And he went on board one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to stand off a little from the land; and so, sitting down, he began to teach the multitudes from the boat.

And going into one of the ships that was Simon’s, he desired him to draw back a little from the land. And sitting he taught the multitudes out of the ship.

Ut cessavit autem loqui, dixit ad Simonem: Duc in altum, et laxate retia vestra in capturam.

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, Stand out into the deep water, and let down your nets for a catch.

Now when he had ceased to speak, he said to Simon: Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

Et respondens Simon, dixit illi: Præceptor, per totam noctem laborantes nihil cepimus: in verbo autem tuo laxabo rete.

Simon answered him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and caught nothing; but at thy word I will let down the net.

And Simon answering said to him: Master, we have laboured all the night, and have taken nothing: but at thy word I will let down the net.

Et cum hoc fecissent, concluserunt piscium multitudinem copiosam: rumpebatur autem rete eorum.

And when they had done this, they took a great quantity of fish, so that the net was near breaking,

And when they had done this, they enclosed a very great multitude of fishes, and their net broke.

Et annuerunt sociis, qui erant in alia navi, ut venirent, et adjuvarent eos. Et venerunt, et impleverunt ambas naviculas, ita ut pene mergerentur.

and they must needs beckon to their partners who were in the other boat to come and help them. When these came, they filled both boats, so that they were ready to sink.

And they beckoned to their partners that were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they were almost sinking.

Quod cum videret Simon Petrus, procidit ad genua Jesu, dicens: Exi a me, quia homo peccator sum, Domine.

At seeing this, Simon Peter fell down and caught Jesus by the knees; Leave me to myself, Lord, he said; I am a sinner.

Which when Simon Peter saw, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying: Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

Stupor enim circumdederat eum, et omnes qui cum illo erant, in captura piscium, quam ceperant:

Such amazement had overcome both him and all his crew, at the catch of fish they had made;

For he was wholly astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken.

similiter autem Jacobum et Joannem, filios Zebedæi, qui erant socii Simonis. Et ait ad Simonem Jesus: Noli timere: ex hoc jam homines eris capiens.

so it was, too, with James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. But Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid; henceforth thou shalt be a fisher of men.

And so were also James and John the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. And Jesus saith to Simon: Fear not: from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

Et subductis ad terram navibus, relictis omnibus, secuti sunt eum.

So, when they had brought their boats to land, they left all and followed him.

And having brought their ships to land, leaving all things, they followed him.

Et factum est, cum esset in una civitatum, et ecce vir plenus lepra, et videns Jesum, et procidens in faciem, rogavit eum, dicens: Domine, si vis, potes me mundare.

Afterwards, while he was in one of the cities, he came upon a man who was far gone in leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell on his face in entreaty; Lord, he said, if it be thy will, thou hast power to make me clean.

And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy, who seeing Jesus, and falling on his face, besought him, saying: Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

Et extendens manum, tetigit eum dicens: Volo: mundare. Et confestim lepra discessit ab illo.

And he stretched out his hand, and touched him, and said, It is my will; be thou made clean. Whereupon all at once his leprosy passed from him.

And stretching forth his hand, he touched him, saying: I will. Be thou cleansed. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.

Et ipse præcepit illi ut nemini diceret: sed, Vade, ostende te sacerdoti, et offer pro emundatione tua, sicut præcepit Moyses, in testimonium illis.

And Jesus warned him not to tell anyone of it; Go and shew thyself to the priest, he said, and bring an offering for thy cleansing, as Moses commanded, to make the truth known to them.

And he charged him that he should tell no man, but, Go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing according as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.

Perambulabat autem magis sermo de illo: et conveniebant turbæ multæ ut audirent, et curarentur ab infirmitatibus suis.

But still the talk of him spread more and more, and great multitudes came together to listen to him, and be healed of their infirmities.

But the fame of him went abroad the more, and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.

Ipse autem secedebat in desertum, et orabat.

And he would steal away from them into the desert and pray there.

And he retired into the desert, and prayed.

Et factum est in una dierum, et ipse sedebat docens. Et erant pharisæi sedentes, et legis doctores, qui venerant ex omni castello Galilææ, et Judææ, et Jerusalem: et virtus Domini erat ad sanandum eos.

It chanced one day that he was teaching, and that some Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting by, who had come from every village in Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was there, to grant healing.

And it came to pass on a certain day, as he sat teaching, that there were also Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, that were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judea and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was to heal them.

Et ecce viri portantes in lecto hominem, qui erat paralyticus: et quærebant eum inferre, et ponere ante eum.

Just then, some men brought there on a bed one who was palsied, whom they tried to carry in and set down in Jesus’ presence.

And behold, men brought in a bed a man, who had the palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
19
Et non invenientes qua parte illum inferrent præ turba, ascenderunt supra tectum, et per tegulas summiserunt eum cum lecto in medium ante Jesum.

But, finding no way of carrying him in, because of the multitude, they went up on to the house-top, and let him down between the tiles, bed and all, into the clear space in front of Jesus.

And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in, because of the multitude, they went up upon the roof, and let him down through the tiles with his bed into the midst before Jesus.

Quorum fidem ut vidit, dixit: Homo, remittuntur tibi peccata tua.
20
And he, seeing their faith, said, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.
20
Whose faith when he saw, he said: Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

Et cœperunt cogitare scribæ et pharisæi, dicentes: Quis est hic, qui loquitur blasphemias? quis potest dimittere peccata, nisi solus Deus?

Whereupon the Pharisees and scribes fell to reasoning thus, Who can this be, that he talks so blasphemously? Who can forgive sins but God and God only?

And the scribes and Pharisees began to think, saying: Who is this who speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
22
Ut cognovit autem Jesus cogitationes eorum, respondens, dixit ad illos: Quid cogitatis in cordibus vestris?

Jesus knew of these secret thoughts of theirs, and said to them openly, Why do you reason thus in your hearts?

And when Jesus knew their thoughts, answering, he said to them: What is it you think in your hearts?

Quid est facilius dicere: Dimittuntur tibi peccata: an dicere: Surge, et ambula?

Which command is more lightly given, to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee, or to say, Rise up and walk?

Which is easier to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise and walk?

Ut autem sciatis quia Filius hominis habet potestatem in terra dimittendi peccata, (ait paralytico) tibi dico, surge, tolle lectum tuum, et vade in domum tuam.

And now, to convince you that the Son of Man has power to forgive sins while he is on earth (here he spoke to the palsied man), I tell thee, rise up, take thy bed with thee and go home.

But that you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,) I say to thee, Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thy house.

Et confestim consurgens coram illis, tulit lectum in quo jacebat: et abiit in domum suam, magnificans Deum.

And he rose up at once in full sight of them, took up his bedding, and went home, giving praise to God.

And immediately rising up before them, he took up the bed on which he lay; and he went away to his own house, glorifying God.

Et stupor apprehendit omnes, et magnificabant Deum. Et repleti sunt timore, dicentes: Quia vidimus mirabilia hodie.

Astonishment came over them all, and they praised God, full of awe; We have seen strange things, they said, to-day.
26
And all were astonished; and they glorified God. And they were filled with fear, saying: We have seen wonderful things to day.

Et post hæc exiit, et vidit publicanum nomine Levi, sedentem ad telonium, et ait illi: Sequere me.

Then he went out, and caught sight of a publican, called Levi, sitting at work in the customs house, and said to him, Follow me.

And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom, and he said to him: Follow me.

Et relictis omnibus, surgens secutus est eum.

And he rose up, and left all behind, and followed him.

And leaving all things, he rose up and followed him.

Et fecit ei convivium magnum Levi in domo sua: et erat turba multa publicanorum, et aliorum qui cum illis erant discumbentes.

Then Levi made a great feast for him in his house, and there was a crowded company of publicans and others who were their fellow guests.

And Levi made him a great feast in his own house; and there was a great company of publicans, and of others, that were at table with them.

Et murmurabant pharisæi et scribæ eorum, dicentes ad discipulos ejus: Quare cum publicanis et peccatoribus manducatis et bibitis?

Whereupon the Pharisees and scribes complained to his disciples, How comes it that you eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

But the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying to his disciples: Why do you eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

Et respondens Jesus, dixit ad illos: Non egent qui sani sunt medico, sed qui male habent.

But Jesus answered them, It is those who are sick, not those who are in health, that have need of the physician.

And Jesus answering, said to them: They that are whole, need not the physician: but they that are sick.

Non veni vocare justos, sed peccatores ad pœnitentiam.
32
I have not come to call the just; I have come to call sinners to repentance.
32
I came not to call the just, but sinners to penance.

At illi dixerunt ad eum: Quare discipuli Joannis jejunant frequenter, et obsecrationes faciunt, similiter et pharisæorum: tui autem edunt et bibunt?

Then they said to him, How is it that thy disciples eat and drink, when John’s disciples are always fasting and praying, and the Pharisees’ disciples too?

And they said to him: Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees in like manner; but thine eat and drink?

Quibus ipse ait: Numquid potestis filios sponsi, dum cum illis est sponsus, facere jejunare?

And he said to them, Can you persuade the men of the bridegroom’s company to fast, while the bridegroom is still with them?

To whom he said: Can you make the children of the bridegroom fast, whilst the bridegroom is with them?

Venient autem dies, cum ablatus fuerit ab illis sponsus: tunc jejunabunt in illis diebus.

No, the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them; then they will fast, when that day comes.

But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, then shall they fast in those days.
36
Dicebat autem et similitudinem ad illos: Quia nemo commissuram a novo vestimento immittit in vestimentum vetus: alioquin et novum rumpit, et veteri non convenit commissura a novo.

And he told them this parable; Nobody uses a piece taken from a new cloak to patch an old one; if that is done, he will have torn the new cloak, and the piece taken from the new will not match the old.

And he spoke also a similitude to them: That no man putteth a piece from a new garment upon an old garment; otherwise he both rendeth the new, and the piece taken from the new agreeth not with the old.

Et nemo mittit vinum novum in utres veteres: alioquin rumpet vinum novum utres, et ipsum effundetur, et utres peribunt:

Nor does anybody put new wine into old wine-skins; if that is done, the new wine bursts the skins, and there is the wine spilt and the skins spoiled.

And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: otherwise the new wine will break the bottles, and it will be spilled, and the bottles will be lost.

sed vinum novum in utres novos mittendum est, et utraque conservantur.

If the wine is new, it must be put into fresh wine-skins, and so both are kept safe.

But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

Et nemo bibens vetus, statim vult novum: dicit enim: Vetus melius est.

Nobody who has been drinking old wine calls all at once for new; he will tell you, The old is better.

And no man drinking old, hath presently a mind to new: for he saith, The old is better.
