The Book of Joshua — Liber Josue
|
Chapter 13
|
Vulgate><Douay-Rheims><Knox Bible
1
1
Josue was old, and far advanced in years, and the Lord said to him: Thou art grown old, and advanced in age, and there is a very large country left, which is not yet divided by lot:
1
Afterwards, when Josue was old and near his end, the Lord bade him bethink himself of his great age; here were wide tracts of land still waiting to be apportioned.
2
omnis videlicet Galilæa, Philisthiim, et universa Gessuri.
2
To wit, all Galilee, Philistia, and all Gessuri.
2
Here was the pale of the Philistines, with all the Gessurite land,
3
A fluvio turbido, qui irrigat Ægyptum, usque ad terminos Accaron contra aquilonem: terra Chanaan, quæ in quinque regulos Philisthiim dividitur, Gazæos, et Azotios, Ascalonitas, Gethæos, et Accaronitas.
3
From the troubled river, that watereth Egypt, unto the borders of Accaron northward: the land of Chanaan, which is divided among the lords of the Philistines, the Gazites, the Azotians, the Ascalonites, the Gethites, and the Accronites.
3
reaching northwards to Accaron from the dark river that flows along the border of Egypt. This was Chanaanite country, in which five princes of the Philistine race had their capitals, at Gaza, Azotus, Ascalon, Geth and Accaron.
4
4
And on the south side are the Hevites, all the land of Chanaan, and Maara of the Sidonians as far as Apheca, and the borders of the Amorrhite,
4
Here, too in the south, were the Hevites. Here was all the Chanaanite territory, including Maara (that belonged to the Sidonians), reaching up to Apheca and the Amorrhite frontier,
5
ejusque confinia. Libani quoque regio contra orientem, a Baalgad sub monte Hermon, donec ingrediaris Emath;
5
And his confines. The country also of Libanus towards the east from Baalgad under mount Hermon to the entering into Emath.
5
and the adjoining territory of the Giblites. East of that came the Lebanon region, from Baalgad, under mount Hermon, right up to the approaches of Emath.
6
omnium qui habitant in monte a Libano usque ad aquas Maserephoth, universique Sidonii. Ego sum qui delebo eos a facie filiorum Israël. Veniat ergo in partem hæreditatis Israël, sicut præcepi tibi.
6
Of all that dwell in the mountains from Libanus, to the waters of Maserephoth, and all the Sidonians. I am he that will cut them off from before the face of the children of Israel. So let their land come in as a part of the inheritance of Israel, as I have commanded thee.
6
So many mountain peoples, from Lebanon down to the waters of Maserephoth; and all these were to be dispossessed at Israel’s coming. These lands, in pursuance of the Lord’s command, must be reckoned in among the possessions of Israel.
7
Et nunc divide terram in possessionem novem tribubus, et dimidiæ tribui Manasse,
7
And now divide the land in possession to the nine tribes, and to the half tribe of Manasses,
7
It was time, then, that he should make a full division of the land among the nine tribes, and that half of Manasses which was attached to them.
8
8
With whom Ruben and Gad have possessed the land, which Moses the servant of the Lord delivered to them beyond the river Jordan, on the east side.
8
The other half of Manasses had already had their lands apportioned to them by Moses east of the Jordan, with Ruben and Gad,
9
9
From Aroer, which is upon the bank of the torrent Arnon, and in the midst of the valley and all the plains of Medaba, as far as Dibon:
9
northwards from Aroer on the Arnon, half-way along its course; the whole plain between Medaba and Dibon,
10
10
And all the cities of Sehon, king of the Amorrhites, who reigned in Hesebon, unto the borders of the children of Ammon.
10
and all the cities as far as the Ammonite frontier that belonged once to Sehon, the Amorrhite king of Hesebon.
11
11
And Galaad, and the borders of Gessuri and Machati, and all mount Hermon, and all Basan as far as Salecha,
11
Galaad, too, and the border country of Gessuri and Machati, and mount Hermon, and the whole of Basan right up to Salecha;
12
12
All the kingdom of Og in Basan, who reigned in Astaroth and Edrai, he was of the remains of the Raphaims: and Moses overthrew and destroyed them.
12
this kingdom of Basan had formerly belonged to Og, the last of the Raphaim, who dwelt at Astaroth and Edrai. These two kings Moses defeated and destroyed,
13
Nolueruntque disperdere filii Israël Gessuri et Machati: et habitaverunt in medio Israël usque in præsentem diem.
13
And the children of Israel would not destroy Gessuri and Machati: and they have dwelt in the midst of Israel, until this present day.
13
but Israel never dispossessed the people of Gessuri and Machati; they dwell there as their neighbours to this day.
14
14
But to the tribe of Levi he gave no possession: but the sacrifices and victims of the Lord God of Israel, are his inheritance, as he spoke to him.
14
(The tribe of Levi had no lands apportioned to them; the Lord God of Israel had bidden them be content with the victims offered to him in sacrifice as their portion.)
15
Dedit ergo Moyses possessionem tribui filiorum Ruben juxta cognationes suas.
15
And Moses gave a possession to the children of Ruben according to their kindreds.
15
The tribe of Ruben, with all its several clans, received its portion from Moses.
16
Fuitque terminus eorum ab Aroër, quæ sita est in ripa torrentis Arnon, et in valle ejusdem torrentis media: universam planitiem, quæ ducit Medaba,
16
And their border was from Aroer, which is on the bank of the torrent Arnon, and in the midst of the valley of the same torrent: all the plain, that leadeth to Medaba,
16
Their territory began at Aroer, on the Arnon, half-way up its course, and took in all the valley that lies before Medaba,
17
17
And Hesebon, and all their villages, which are in the plains. Dibon also, and Bamothbaal, and the town of Baalmaon,
17
and Hesebon, and the villages on the plain round about. They had Dibon, too, and Bamothbaal, and the town called Baalmaon,
18
et Jassa, et Cedimoth, et Mephaath,
18
And Jassa, and Cidimoth, and Mephaath,
18
Jassa, Cedemoth, and Mephaath,
19
et Cariathaim, et Sabama, et Sarathasar in monte convallis.
19
And Cariathaim, and Sabama, and Sarathasar in the mountain of the valley.
19
Cariathaim, and Sabama, and Sarathasar, where the hills rise out of the Jordan valley;
20
Bethphogor et Asedoth, Phasga et Bethiesimoth,
20
Bethphogor and Asedoth, Phasga and Bethiesimoth,
20
Bethphogor and the spurs of Phasga and Bethjesimoth.
21
21
And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdoms of Sehon king of the Amorrhites, that reigned in Hesebon, whom Moses slew with the princes of Madian: Hevi, and Recem, and Sur and Hur, and Rebe, dukes of Sehon inhabitants of the land.
21
Theirs were all the cities in the plain, all the domains that once were Sehon’s. (It was Moses that defeated Sehon, as he defeated also the Madianite chiefs that held their lands from him, Hevi, Recem, Sur, Hur and Rebe,
22
22
Balaam also the son of Beor the soothsayer, the children of Israel slew with the sword among the rest that were slain.
22
and bade the Israelites put all their army to the sword, the prophet Balaam among them.)
23
23
And the river Jordan was the border of the children of Ruben. This is the possession of the Rubenites, by their kindreds, of cities and villages.
23
Such were the towns and villages that passed into the possession of Ruben’s descendants, and they had the river Jordan for their boundary.
24
24
And Moses gave to the tribe of Gad and to his children by their kindreds a possession, of which this is the division.
24
It was Moses, too, who gave the tribe of Gad their portion, dividing it up among the several clans of it.
25
25
The border of Jaser, and all the cities of Galaad, and half the land of the children of Ammon: as far as Aroer which is over against Rabba:
25
Jazer belonged to them, and all the cities of Galaad, and half the Ammonite territory, reaching as far as Aroer, near Rabba.
26
26
And from Hesebon unto Ramoth, Masphe and Betonim: and from Manaim unto the borders of Dabir.
26
It stretched all the way from Hesebon to Ramoth, Masphe and Betonim, from Manaim to the country round Dabir;
27
27
And in the valley Betharan and Bethnemra, and Socoth, and Saphon the other part of the kingdom of Sehon king of Hesebon: the limit of this also is the Jordan, as far as the uttermost part of the sea of Cenereth beyond the Jordan on the east side.
27
and on the low ground it contained Betharam, Bethnemra, Socoth and Saphon, all the rest of what Sehon had ruled from Hesebon; this tribe, too, had Jordan for its boundary, up to where the further, eastern shore of Lake Cenereth begins.
28
28
This is the possession of the children of Gad by their families, their cities, and villages.
28
Such were the cities and towns allotted to the several clans of Gad as their portion.
29
Dedit et dimidiæ tribui Manasse, filiisque ejus juxta cognationes suas, possessionem,
29
He gave also to the half tribe of Manasses and his children possession according to their kindreds,
29
And he also allotted lands to the separated clans of Manasses;
30
30
The beginning whereof is this: from Manaim all Basan, and all the kingdoms of Og king of Basan, and all the villages of Jair, which are in Basan, threescore towns.
30
the whole of Basan northwards from Manaim, all the domain over which Og, king of Basan, had ruled. This included the sixty townships in Basan which are called Jair’s villages,
31
et dimidiam partem Galaad, et Astaroth, et Edrai, urbes regni Og in Basan: filiis Machir, filii Manasse, dimidiæ parti filiorum Machir juxta cognationes suas.
31
And half Galaad, and Astaroth, and Edrai, cities of the kingdom of Og in Basan: to the children of Machir, the son of Manasses, to one half of the children of Machir according to their kindreds.
31
and half of Galaad, and the two cities from which Og ruled over Basan, Astaroth and Edrai. All this now belonged to the descendants of Machir, son of Manasses, Machir’s clans being thus separated from the rest.
32
Hanc possessionem divisit Moyses in campestribus Moab trans Jordanem contra Jericho ad orientalem plagam.
32
This possession Moses divided in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan, over against Jericho on the east side.
32
Such was the distribution made by Moses himself, on the plains of Moab, east of Jordan, opposite Jericho.
33
33
But to the tribe of Levi he gave no possession: because the Lord the God of Israel himself is their possession, as he spoke to them.
33
He gave no lands to the sons of Levi, who held the Lord’s promise that he himself would be their portion.
