1 Now when all the kings of the Amor rhites, who dwelt beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of Chanaan, who possessed the places near the great sea, had heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the children of Israel, till they passed over, their heart failed them, and there remained no spirit in them, fearing the coming in of the children of Israel. |
1 So the news went abroad among the kings of the Amorrhites, who dwelt on the west of Jordan, and the Chanaanite kings by the coast of the great sea, that the Lord had dried up the stream of Jordan to let the Israelites go across. And now their hearts failed them, and their spirits were altogether daunted, such terror was theirs at the coming of Israel. |
2 Eo tempore ait Dominus ad Josue: Fac tibi cultros lapideos, et circumcide secundo filios Israël. |
2 At that time the Lord said to Josue: Make thee knives of stone, and circumcise the second time the children of Israel. |
2 It was at this time the Lord said to Josue, Have knives made of flint, and restore the rite of circumcision among the sons of Israel. |
3 He did what the Lord had commanded, and he circumcised the children of Israel in the hill of the foreskins. |
3 So he did as the Lord bade him, and restored circumcision to Israel at the Hill of the Foreskins. |
4 Now this is the cause of the second circumcision: All the people that came out of Egypt that were males, all the men fit for war, died in the desert, during the time of the long going about in the way. |
4 There was need to renew this rite, because the men of the older generation, who were of age to bear arms at the time of the escape from Egypt, had died in the course of their desert wanderings. |
5 qui omnes circumcisi erant. Populus autem qui natus est in deserto, |
5 Now these were all circumcised. But the people that were born in the desert, |
5 These had all been circumcised, but the generation which had been born |
6 During the forty years of the journey in the wide wilderness, were uncircumcised: till all they were consumed that had not heard the voice of the Lord, and to whom he had sworn before, that he would not shew them the land flowing with milk and honey. |
6 during those forty years in the waste wilderness, remained uncircumcised still. Those rebels, the Lord had sworn it, must never reach the land that was all milk and honey; now they lay dead, |
7 Horum filii in locum successerunt patrum, et circumcisi sunt a Josue: quia sicut nati fuerant, in præputio erant, nec eos in via aliquis circumciderat. |
7 The children of these succeeded in the place of their fathers, and were circumcised by Josue: for they were uncircumcised even as they were born, and no one had circumcised them in the way. |
7 and their sons had taken their places. For these Josue must renew the rite, men who had grown up uncircumcised through the neglect that came with days of wandering. |
8 Now after they were all circumcised, they remained in the same place of the camp, until they were healed. |
8 So all were circumcised, and they lay encamped there till their wounds healed; |
9 Dixitque Dominus ad Josue: Hodie abstuli opprobrium Ægypti a vobis. Vocatumque est nomen loci illius Galgala, usque in præsentem diem. |
9 And the Lord said to Josue: This day have I taken away from you the reproach of Egypt. And the name of that place was called Galgal, until this present day. |
9 This day, the Lord said to Josue, I have reversed the lot that made you slaves in Egypt; and so the place came to be called Galgal, Turning Round, the name it still bears. |
10 Manseruntque filii Israël in Galgalis, et fecerunt Phase quartadecima die mensis ad vesperum in campestribus Jericho: |
10 And the children of Israel abode in Galgal, and they kept the phase on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening, in the plains of Jericho: |
10 In Galgal, then, the Israelites remained encamped, and there they celebrated the pasch on the plains of Jericho, beginning at evening on the fourteenth day of the month. |
11 And they ate on the next day unleavened bread of the corn of the land, and frumenty of the same year. |
11 And when they ate unleavened bread on the morrow, they were eating corn that was grown on the ground where they stood; their flour was made of that year’s harvest. |
12 And the manna ceased after they ate of the corn of the land, neither did the children of Israel use that food any more, but they ate of the corn of the present year of the land of Chanaan. |
12 Once they had begun to enjoy their own harvest, the supply of manna ceased, nor did the sons of Israel ever taste that food again; they ate the crops which the land of Chanaan yielded that year. |
13 And when Josue was in the field of the city of Jericho, he lifted up his eyes, and saw a man standing over against him, holding a drawn sword, and he went to him, and said: Art thou one of ours, or of our adversaries? |
13 There, in the plain by Jericho, Josue looked up and saw a man who stood with drawn sword in his path. Coming close to him, he asked, Art thou of our camp, or of the enemy’s? |
14 And he answered: No: but I am prince of the host of the Lord, and now I am come. |
14 Nay, said he, it is the captain of the Lord’s army that has come to thy side. |
15 Cecidit Josue pronus in terram, et adorans ait: Quid dominus meus loquitur ad servum suum? |
15 Josue fell on his face to the ground. And worshipping, said: What saith my lord to his servant? |
15 And with that, Josue cast himself down, face to ground; What message hast thou, my Lord, for thy servant? he asked. |
16 Loose, saith he, thy shoes from off thy feet: for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Josue did as was commanded him. |
16 But first he was commanded to take the shoes off his feet, as one that stood on holy ground; so he did as he was bidden. |
