1 Then the princes of the families of Levi came to Eleazar the priest, and to Josue the son of Nun, and to the princes of the kindreds of all the tribes of the children of Israel: |
1 Meanwhile the heads of the Levite households approached the high priest Eleazar, and Josue the son of Nun, and the clan chiefs of Israel, |
2 And they spoke to them in Silo in the land of Chanaan, and said: The Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, that cities should be given us to dwell in, and their suburbs to feed our cattle. |
2 all gathered there at Silo now that Chanaan was won. It was the Lord’s command to Moses, they said, that we should have cities to live in, with lands round them on which we could pasture our beasts. |
3 And the children of Israel gave out of their possessions according to the commandment of the Lord, cities and their suburbs. |
3 And so, in pursuance of the Lord’s command, cities and lands were granted to them by the sons of Israel. |
4 And the lot came out for the family of Caath of the children of Aaron the priest out of the tribes of Juda, and of Simeon, and of Benjamin, thirteen cities. |
4 The lot fell first on the line of Caath. Among these, the family of the high priest Aaron were to receive thirteen cities from Juda, Simeon, and Benjamin; |
5 And to the rest of the children of Caath, that is, to the Levites, who remained, out of the tribes of Ephraim, and of Dan, and the half tribe of Manasses, ten cities. |
5 the rest of the Caathites, Levites that were not of the priestly family, ten cities from Ephraim, Dan, and the western half of Manasses. |
6 And the lot came out to the children of Gerson, that they should take of the tribes of Issachar and of Aser and of Nephtali, and of the half tribe of Manasses in Basan, thirteen cities. |
6 Issachar, Aser, Nephthali, and the eastern half of Manasses, in Basan, were to give the line of Gerson thirteen cities; |
7 And to the sons of Merari by their kindreds, of the tribes of Ruben and of Gad and of Zabulon, twelve cities. |
7 Ruben, Gad, and Zabulon to give the line of Merari twelve cities. |
8 Dederuntque filii Israël Levitis civitates et suburbana earum, sicut præcepit Dominus per manum Moysi, singulis sorte tribuentes. |
8 And the children of Israel gave to the Levites the cities and their suburbs, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, giving to every one by lot. |
8 Thus was the command the Lord had given through Moses carried out, and the Israelites handed over to the Levites the cities and lands allotted to them. |
9 Of the tribes of the children of Juda and of Simeon Josue gave cities: whose names are these, |
9 These are the names of the cities which Josue handed over in Juda and Simeon |
10 To the sons of Aaron, of the families of Caath of the race of Levi (for the first lot came out for them) |
10 to the family of Aaron, whose lot came first among the descendants of Caath. |
11 Cariatharbe patris Enac, quæ vocatur Hebron, in monte Juda, et suburbana ejus per circuitum. |
11 The city of Arbe the father of Enac, which is called Hebron, in the mountain of Juda, and the suburbs thereof round about. |
11 One was Cariath-Arbe, called after the father of Enac; Hebron, that is, in the hill-country of Juda, with lands round it. |
12 But the fields and the villages thereof he had given to Caleb the son of Jephone for his possession. |
12 (He had given the countryside, with the villages in it, to Caleb the son of Jephone as his portion; |
13 He gave therefore to the children of Aaron the priest, Hebron a city of refuge, and the suburbs thereof: and Lobna with the suburbs thereof, |
13 but Hebron itself, the city of refuge, with the lands close to it, he gave to the family of Aaron.) The others were Lobna, and the lands round Lobna, |
14 et Jether, et Esthemo, |
14 And Jether and Estemo, |
14 Jether, Esthemo, |
15 et Holon, et Dabir, |
15 And Holon, and Dabir, |
15 Holon, Dabir, |
16 And Ain, and Jeta, and Bethsames, with their suburbs: nine cities out of the two tribes, as hath been said. |
16 Ain, Jeta, and Bethsames, with the lands round them; nine cities out of the two tribes aforesaid. |
17 And out of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, Gabaon, and Gabae, |
17 From the lands of Benjamin he handed over Gabaon, Gabae, |
18 And Anathoth and Almon, with their suburbs: four cities. |

19 Omnes simul civitates filiorum Aaron sacerdotis, tredecim, cum suburbanis suis. |
19 All the cities together of the children of Aaron the priest, were thirteen, with their suburbs. |
19 Thus Aaron’s family had thirteen city-enclosures in all; |
20 And to the rest of the families of the children of Caath of the race of Levi was given this possession. |

25 And of the half tribe of Manasses, Thanac and Gethremmon, with their suburbs, two cities. |
25 From western Manasses, Thanach and their own town of Gethremmon, two city-enclosures. |
26 All the cities were ten, with their suburbs, which were given to the children of Caath, of the inferior degree. |
26 Thus there were ten city-enclosures to the Caathites of lower rank. |
27 Filiis quoque Gerson Levitici generis dedit de dimidia tribu Manasse confugii civitates, Gaulon in Basan, et Bosram, cum suburbanis suis, civitates duas. |
27 To the children of Gerson also of the race of Levi out of the half tribe of Manasses, Gaulon in Basan, one of the cities of refuge, and Bosra, with their suburbs, two cities. |
27 The Levites of Gerson’s line received from eastern Manasses one city of refuge, Gaulon in Basan; and also Bosram; two city-enclosures. From Issachar, |

31 And Helcath, and Rohob, with their suburbs, four cities. |
31 Helcath and Rohob; four city-enclosures. |
32 Of the tribe also of Nephtali, Cedes in Galilee, one of the cities of refuge: and Hammoth Dor, and Carthan, with their suburbs, three cities. |
32 From Nephthali, one city of refuge, Cedes in the pale of Nephthali; also Hammoth-Dor and Carthan; three city-enclosures. |
33 Omnes urbes familiarum Gerson, tredecim, cum suburbanis suis. |
33 All the cities of the families of Gerson, were thirteen, with their suburbs. |
33 Thus there were thirteen city-enclosures granted to the Gersonites. |
34 And to the children of Merari, Levites of the inferior degree, by their families were given of the tribe of Zabulon, Jecnam and Cartha, |

38 thus there were twelve city-enclosures granted to the families of Merari. |
39 Itaque civitates universæ Levitarum in medio possessionis filiorum Israël fuerunt quadraginta octo |
39 So all the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty-eight, |
39 Altogether, then, the Levites had forty-eight cities, distributed among the various possessions of Israel, |
40 cum suburbanis suis, singulæ per familias distributæ. |
40 With their suburbs, each distributed by the families. |
40 and lands attached to them; each family among them had its own domain. |
41 And the Lord God gave to Israel all the land that he had sworn to give to their fathers: and they possessed it and dwelt in it. |
41 Thus the Lord God made over to Israel the whole of the territory he had promised to their fathers; they had a home of their own to settle in, |
42 And he gave them peace from all nations round about: and none of their enemies durst stand against them, but were brought under their dominion. |
42 secure from attack by any of the nations which surrounded them, since these no longer ventured to offer resistance, but submitted to their rule. |
43 Not so much as one word, which he had promised to perform unto them, was made void, but all came to pass. |
43 No word of the promises which the Lord had made to them remained unfulfilled. |
