Chapter 15
|
Vulgate><Knox Bible><Douay-Rheims
1
Igitur sors filiorum Judæ per cognationes suas ista fuit: a termino Edom, desertum Sin, contra meridiem, et usque ad extremam partem australis plagæ.
1
Meanwhile the clans descended from Juda had their territory marked out thus. It marched with Edom, with the desert of Sin that stretches out towards the midday sun, at the southernmost point of all.
1
Now the lot of the children of Juda by their kindreds was this: From the frontier of Edom, to the desert of Sin southward, and to the uttermost part of the south coast.
2
Initium ejus a summitate maris salsissimi, et a lingua ejus, quæ respicit meridiem.
2
Beginning at the end of the Salt Sea, that is, at its southern bay,
2
Its beginning was from the top of the most salt sea, and from the bay thereof, that looketh to the south.
3
3
the frontier followed the Scorpion Pass till it crossed over to Sina, then climbed up to Cades-Barne, and so reached Esron. Then it climbed up to Addar, and curved round Carcaa;
3
And it goeth out towards the ascent of the Scorpion, and passeth on to Sina: and ascendeth into Cadesbarne, and reacheth into Esron, going up to Addar, and compassing Carcaa.
4
4
from which point it crossed over to Asemona, and so reached the brook of Egypt, coming to an end at the open sea. These were to be the limits of the southern frontier;
4
And from thence passing along into Asemona, and reaching the torrent of Egypt: and the bounds thereof shall be the great sea, this shall be the limit of the south coast.
5
5
on the east, Juda was bounded by the Salt Sea, right up to the mouth of Jordan. From the extreme bay of the Salt Sea up to Jordan the frontier went northwards;
5
But on the east side the beginning shall be the most salt sea even to the end of the Jordan: and towards the north, from the bay of the sea unto the same river Jordan.
6
6
then it climbed up to Beth-Hagla, turned north to Beth-Araba, and went up to the Stone of Boen, son of Ruben.
6
And the border goeth up into BethHagla, and passeth by the north into Beth-Araba: going up to the stone of Boen the son of Ruben.
7
7
From the Valley of Achor it stretched to the borders of Debera, leaving Galgala on the north so as to climb up to Adommim on the south side of the valley; it crossed the water-course that is called the Spring of the Sun, and made its way on to the Spring of Rogel.
7
And reaching as far as the borders of Debara from the valley of Achor, and so northward looking towards Galgal, which is opposite to the ascent of Adommin, on the south side of the torrent: and the border passeth the waters that are called the fountain of the sun: and the goings out thereof shall be at the fountain Rogel.
8
8
Then it went up the valley of the Son of Ennom by its southern or Jebusite side, that is by Jerusalem; and thence stretched across to the mountain summit which faces Geennom from the west, and stands at the southern end of the Valley of Raphaim.
8
And it goeth up by the valley of the son of Ennom on the side of the Jebusite towards the south, the same is Jerusalem: and thence ascending to the top of the mountain, which is over against Geennom to the west in the end of the valley of Raphaim, northward.
9
9
From that summit it crossed to the well of Nephtoa, and reached as far as the villages on mount Ephron; then it curved round to Baala, which is also called Cariathiarim, the City of the Woods;
9
And it passeth on from the top of the mountain to the fountain of the water of Nephtoa: and reacheth to the towns of mount Ephron: and it bendeth towards Baala, which is Cariathiarim, that is to say, the city of the woods.
10
10
and from Baala it went westwards as far as mount Seir, northwards to Cheslon along the side of mount Jarim, and so down to Bethsames and across to Thamma.
10
And it compasseth from Baala westward unto mount Seir: and passeth by the side of mount Jarim to the north into Cheslon: and goeth down into Bethsames, and passeth into Thamna.
11
11
Then northward along the slopes in the direction of Accaron, and round to Sechrona, and across mount Baala, and at last it reached Jebneel, and found its western end at the open sea.
11
And it reacheth northward to a part of Accaron at the side: and bendeth to Sechrona, and passeth mount Baala: and cometh into Jebneel, and is bounded westward with the great sea.
12
12
Such were the bounds within which the clans of Juda were to dwell.
12
These are the borders round about of the children of Juda in their kindreds.
13
Caleb vero filio Jephone dedit partem in medio filiorum Juda, sicut præceperat ei Dominus: Cariath Arbe patris Enac, ipsa est Hebron.
13
(Hebron, then called Cariath-Arbe after the father of Enac, which was assigned at the Lord’s command to Caleb, son of Jephone, was in the very heart of Juda.
13
But to Caleb the son of Jephone he gave a portion in the midst of the children of Juda, as the Lord had commanded him: Cariath-Arbe the father of Enac, which is Hebron.
14
14
Three of the Enacim he rooted out of it, Sesai and Ahiman and Tholmai, of Enac’s true breed;
14
And Caleb destroyed out of it the three sons of Enac, Sesai and Ahiman, and Tholmai of the race of Enac.
15
15
then he attacked Dabir, which in old days was called Cariath-Sepher, the city of Writings.
15
And going up from thence he came to the inhabitants of Dabir, which before was called Cariath-Sepher, that is to say, the city of letters.
16
Dixitque Caleb: Qui percusserit Cariath Sepher, et ceperit eam, dabo ei Axam filiam meam uxorem.
16
He had promised that whoever defeated and took Cariath-Sepher should have the hand of his daughter Axa in marriage;
16
And Caleb said: He that shall smite Cariath-Sepher, and take it, I will give him Axa my daughter to wife.
17
Cepitque eam Othoniel filius Cenez frater Caleb junior: deditque ei Axam filiam suam uxorem.
17
and it was taken by his own younger brother, Othoniel, son of Cenez, to whom he wedded his daughter Axa accordingly.
17
And Othoniel the son of Cenez, the younger brother of Caleb, took it: and he gave him Axa his daughter to wife.
18
Quæ, cum pergerent simul, suasa est a viro suo ut peteret a patre suo agrum. Suspiravitque ut sedebat in asino: cui Caleb: Quid habes? inquit.
18
One day he heard her sighing as she rode on her ass in his company, and asked what ailed her. She had been urged by her husband to win him a grant of land from her father.
18
And as they were going together, she was moved by her husband to ask a field of her father, and she sighed as she sat on her ass. And Caleb said to her: What aileth thee?
19
19
So her answer was, Grant me a favour; the portion thou hast given me is southern land and dry, give me well-watered land too. So he gave her the High Springs and the Low Springs both together. )
19
But she answered: Give me a blessing: thou hast given me a southern and dry land, give me also a land that is watered. And Caleb gave her the upper and the nether watery ground.
20
20
The clans of Juda, then, had their lands assigned to them;
20
This is the possession of the tribe of the children of Juda by their kindreds.
21
