The Book of Joshua — Liber Josue
|
Chapter 23
|
Vulgate><Douay-Rheims><Knox Bible
1
Evoluto autem multo tempore, postquam pacem dederat Dominus Israëli, subjectis in gyro nationibus universis, et Josue jam longævo, et persenilis ætatis,
1
And when a long time was passed, after that the Lord had given peace to Israel, all the nations round about being subdued, and Josue being now old, and far advanced in years:
1
The Lord had granted Israel long years of peace, with all their neighbours subject to them, when Josue, now grown to be a very old man,
2
2
Josue called for all Israel, and for the elders, and for the princes, and for the judges, and for the masters, and said to them: I am old, and far advanced in years:
2
summoned all Israel, with their elders, judges, chieftains and magistrates, and spoke thus to them. I am an old man now, and near my end,
3
vosque cernitis omnia, quæ fecerit Dominus Deus vester cunctis per circuitum nationibus, quomodo pro vobis ipse pugnaverit:
3
And you see all that the Lord your God hath done to all the nations round about, how he himself hath fought for you:
3
and you can see for yourselves how the Lord God has fought on your side against the nations that surround you;
4
4
And now since he hath divided to you by lot all the land, from the east of the Jordan unto the great sea, and many nations yet remain:
4
how he has divided up the land between you, from Jordan on the east to the shores of the open sea. Many nations are still left;
5
5
The Lord your God will destroy them, and take them away from before your face, and you shall possess the land as he hath promised you.
5
and these, too, the Lord your God will dispossess, making room for you to occupy their lands, in fulfilment of his promise.
6
6
Only take courage, and be careful to observe all things that are written in the book of the law of Moses: and turn not aside from them neither to the right hand nor to the left:
6
But you must be resolute, and observe jealously all the terms of that law which Moses committed to writing, never swerve from them to right or to left.
7
7
Lest after that you are come in among the Gentiles, who will remain among you, you should swear by the name of their gods, and serve them, and adore them:
7
You must not consort with these nations that survive, and learn to swear by the names of their gods, or enslave yourselves to their worship;
8
8
But cleave ye unto the Lord your God: as you have done until this day.
8
you must keep true to the Lord your God, as you have till now.
9
Et tunc auferet Dominus Deus in conspectu vestro gentes magnas et robustissimas, et nullus vobis resistere poterit.
9
And then the Lord God will take away before your eyes nations that are great and very strong, and no man shall be able to resist you.
9
If you will do that, the Lord God will dispossess great nations, powerful nations, to make room for you; none will be able to withstand your onslaught.
10
Unus e vobis persequetur hostium mille viros: quia Dominus Deus vester pro vobis ipse pugnabit, sicut pollicitus est.
10
One of you shall chase a thousand men of the enemies: because the Lord your God himself will fight for you, as he hath promised.
10
A thousand enemies will take flight before a single man of your company, so well the Lord will keep his promise to fight on your side.
11
11
This only take care of with all diligence, that you love the Lord your God.
11
On peril of your lives, then, keep your hearts true to the Lord your God.
12
12
But if you will embrace the errors of these nations that dwell among you, and make marriages with them, and join friendships:
12
If you consent to follow closely in the false ways of neighbouring peoples, allying yourselves with them by marriage and making friends of them,
13
13
Know ye for a certainty that the Lord your God will not destroy them before your face, but they shall be a pit and a snare in your way, and a stumblingblock at your side, and stakes in your eyes, till he take you away and destroy you from off this excellent land, which he hath given you.
13
I warn you here and now that the Lord will never dispossess them to make room for you. Evermore they will be at your side, ready to snare and entrap you and catch your feet unawares, eyesores to blind you; and at last he will dispossess you instead, banish you utterly from this fair land he has given you for your home.
14
14
Behold this day I am going into the way of all the earth, and you shall know with all your mind that of all the words which the Lord promised to perform for you, not one hath failed.
14
The time has come when I must go the way all mortal things go at last; and I would have you cherish this message deep in your hearts. Of all the promises the Lord made you, not one has missed fulfilment;
15
15
Therefore as he hath fulfilled in deed, what he promised, and all things prosperous have come: so will he bring upon you all the evils he hath threatened, till he take you away and destroy you from off this excellent land, which he hath given you,
15
and as he has made good his promises by granting you the prosperity you now enjoy, so he will make good his threats, by dispossessing you and banishing you from this fair land of yours,
16
16
When you shall have transgressed the covenant of the Lord your God, which he hath made with you, and shall have served strange gods, and adored them: then shall the indignation of the Lord rise up quickly and speedily against you, and you shall be taken away from this excellent land, which he hath delivered to you.
16
if you do not keep true to the covenant the Lord your God has made with you. Enslave yourselves to the worship of other gods, and the Lord’s vengeance will come upon you swiftly and suddenly, till the fair land he has given you knows you no more.
