Levitæ in diebus Eliasib, et Jojada, et Johanan, et Jeddoa, scripti principes familiarum, et sacerdotes in regno Darii Persæ.
22
The Levites the chiefs of the families in the days of Eliasib, and Joiada, and Johanan, and Jeddoa, were recorded, and the priests in the reign of Darius the Persian.
22
There was a list made, at the time when Darius was king of Persia, of all who had been heads of the Levitical and priestly clans in the days of Eliasib, Joiada, Johanan and Jeddoa.
23
Filii Levi principes familiarum, scripti in libro verborum dierum, et usque ad dies Jonathan, filii Eliasib.
23
The sons of Levi, heads of the families were written in the book of Chronicles, even unto the days of Jonathan the son of Eliasib.
23
In the book of Annals, the Levite chiefs are only entered down to the days of Eliasib’s grandson Jonathan.
24
24
Now the chief of the Levites were Hasebia, Serebia, and Josue the son of Cedmihel: and their brethren by their courses, to praise and to give thanks according to the commandment of David the man of God, and to wait equally in order.
24
… The duties of the Levite chiefs were thus divided; Hasebia, Serebia, Josue, (Bennui), Cedmihel and their clansmen took their turn in due order at singing of praise and giving of thanks, as David bade, that was God’s servant;
25
Mathania, et Becbecia, Obedia, Mosollam, Telmon, Accub, custodes portarum et vestibulorum ante portas.
25
Mathania, and Becbecia, Obedia, and Mosollam, Telmon, Accub, were keepers of the gates and of the entrances before the gates.
25
Mathania, Becbecia, Obedia, Mosollam, Telmon and Accub must keep the gates and the courts before the gates.
26
Hi in diebus Joacim filii Josue, filii Josedec, et in diebus Nehemiæ ducis, et Esdræ sacerdotis scribæque.
26
These were in the days of Joacim the son of Josue, the son of Josedec, and in the days of Nehemias the governor, and of Esdras the priest and scribe.
26
These held office in the days of Joacim, son of Josue son of Josedec, when Nehemias was governor and Esdras was priest and scribe.
27
27
And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, and to keep the dedication, and to rejoice with thanksgiving, and with singing, and with cymbals, and psalteries and harps.
27
At the time when the wall of Jerusalem was dedicated, the Levites, from all their scattered homes, were summoned up to Jerusalem; theirs to interpret the joy and thanksgiving which this dedication brought, with song and cymbals, with harp and zither.
28
28
And the sons of the singing men were gathered together out of the plain country about Jerusalem, and out of the villages of Nethuphati,
28
From the lowlands about Jerusalem they came, these makers of music, from the townships of Nethuphati,
29
29
And from the house of Galgal, and from the countries of Geba and Azmaveth: for the singing men had built themselves villages round about Jerusalem.
29
from their residence at Galgal, from Geba and Azmaveth, and wherever there were colonies of singers at a distance from Jerusalem itself.
30
30
And the priests and the Levites were purified, and they purified the people, and the gates, and the wall.
30
Priests and Levites rid themselves of all defilement, then did as much for the people, and for the walls and gates themselves.
31
31
And I made the princes of Juda go up upon the wall, and I appointed two great choirs to give praise. And they went on the right hand upon the wall toward the dunghill gate.
31
And I, Nehemias, would have the chief men of Juda mount on the wall, and two choirs of singers to escort them with chants of praise. One choir went along the wall to the right, in the direction of the Scavengers’ Gate,
32
Et ivit post eos Osaias, et media pars principum Juda,
32
And after them went Osaias, and half of the princes of Juda,
32
with Osaias and half the chiefs of Juda behind it;
33
et Azarias, Esdras, et Mosollam, Judas, et Benjamin, et Semeia, et Jeremias.
33
And Azarias, Esdras, and Mosollam, Judas, and Benjamin, and Semeia, and Jeremias.
33
then Azarias, Esdras and Mosollam; then (half) the men of Juda and Benjamin; then Semeia and Jeremias;
34
Et de filiis sacerdotum in tubis, Zacharias filius Jonathan, filius Semeiæ, filius Mathaniæ, filius Michaiæ, filius Zechur, filius Asaph,
34
And of the sons of the priests with trumpets, Zacharias the son of Jonathan, the son of Semeia, the son of Mathania, the son of Michaia, the son of Zechur, the son of Asaph,
34
then some of the priests with trumpets, led by Zacharias, that came down through Jonathan, Semeia, Mathanias, Michaias and Zechur from Asaph himself;
35
et fratres ejus Semeia, et Azareel, Malalai, Galalai, Maai, Nathanaël, et Judas, et Hanani, in vasis cantici David viri Dei: et Esdras scriba ante eos in porta fontis.
35
And his brethren Semeia, and Azareel, Malalai, Galalai, Maai, Nathanael, and Judas, and Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of God: and Esdras the scribe before them at the fountain gate.
35
the others were Semeia, Azareel, Malalai, Galalai, Maai, Nathanael, Judas and Hanani. So they went, and with them went the music planned by God’s servant David, and the scribe Esdras marched at their head. When they reached the Gate of the Well,
36
36
And they went up over against them by the stairs of the city of David, at the going up of the wall of the house of David, and to the water gate eastward:
36
an upward climb confronted them; up the steps of David’s Keep they went, and up the slope that passes David’s palace, till they reached the Water-gate in the east wall.
37
37
And the second choir of them that gave thanks went on the opposite side, and I after them, and the half of the people upon the wall, and upon the tower of the furnaces, even to the broad wall,
37
The second choir, with the same chant of praise, marched in the other direction, I myself and half the people accompanying it; climbed the wall and the Furnace Tower, and so went on where the wall was broadest,
38
38
And above the gate of Ephraim, and above the old gate, and above the fish gate and the tower of Hananeel, and the tower of Emath, and even to the flock gate: and they stood still in the watch gate.
38
past the Gate of Ephraim, and the old gate, and the Fishmongers’ Gate, and the Tower of Hananeel and the Tower of Emath, and on to the Shepherds’ Gate. At last they reached the Watch-tower Gate, and came to a halt there.
39
steteruntque duo chori laudantium in domo Dei, et ego, et dimidia pars magistratuum mecum.
39
And the two choirs of them that gave praise stood still at the house of God, and I and the half of the magistrates with me.
39
Then the two choirs stood together at God’s house giving praise. I, too, and the chiefs who were with me
40
Et sacerdotes, Eliachim, Maasia, Miamin, Michea, Elioënai, Zacharia, Hanania in tubis,
40
And the priests, Eliachim, Maasia, Miamin, Michea, Elioenai, Zacharia, Hanania with trumpets,
40
had priests with trumpets for our escort, Eliachim, Maasia, Miamin, Michea, Elioenai, Zacharia and Hanania;
41
et Maasia, et Semeia, et Eleazar, et Azzi, et Johanan, et Melchia, et Ælam, et Ezer. Et clare cecinerunt cantores, et Jezraia præpositus:
41
And Maasia, and Semeia, and Eleazar, and Azzi, and Johanan, and Melchia, and Elam, and Ezer. And the singers sung loud, and Jezraia was their overseer:
41
also Maasia, Semeia, Eleazar, Azzi, Johanan, Melchia, Aelam and Ezer. Loud sang the singers, and loud sang Jezraia at their head.
42
42
And they sacrificed on that day great sacrifices, and they rejoiced: for God had made them joyful with great joy: their wives also and their children rejoiced, and the joy of Jerusalem was heard afar off.
42
Great was the slaughtering of victims that day, and greatly they rejoiced, women and children with the rest, at the signal mercy the Lord had shewn them; such a cry of triumph went up from Jerusalem as was heard far away.
43
43
They appointed also in that day men over the storehouses of the treasure, for the libations, and for the firstfruits, and for the tithes, that the rulers of the city might bring them in by them in honour of thanksgiving, for the priests and Levites: for Juda was joyful in the priests and Levites that assisted.
43
At this time they appointed certain priests and Levites to take charge of the treasury, and receive offering and first-fruit and tithe from the city chiefs, in honour and gratitude; so well content were the men of Juda with the ministrations of priest and Levite both.
44
Et custodierunt observationem Dei sui, et observationem expiationis, et cantores, et janitores juxta præceptum David, et Salomonis filii ejus,
44
And they kept the watch of their God, and the observance of expiation, and the singing men, and the porters, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.
44
And ever they kept true to the old observances, God honoured, defilement cleansed away, singers and porters fulfilling the duties which David, and David’s son Solomon, enjoined upon them.
45
45
For in the days of David and Asaph from the beginning there were chief singers appointed, to praise with canticles, and give thanks to God.
45
Ever since David’s time and Asaph’s there had been masters of the choir to give praise and thanks;
46
46
And all Israel, in the days of Zorobabel, and in the days of Nehemias gave portions to the singing men, and to the porters, day by day, and they sanctified the Levites, and the Levites sanctified the sons of Aaron.
46
and now, in the times of Zorobabel and of Nehemias, men assigned a daily portion both to choristers and to door-keepers; Israel honoured Levi with gifts, and Levi Aaron.
