of the woman of Canaan: and many others: and feeds four thousand with seven loaves.

Then came to him from Jerusalem scribes and Pharisees, saying:

After this, Jesus was approached by the scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem, who asked:

Tunc accesserunt ad eum ab Jerosolymis scribæ et pharisæi, dicentes:

Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the ancients? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

Why is it that thy disciples violate the traditions of our ancestors? They do not wash their hands when they eat.

Quare discipuli tui transgrediuntur traditionem seniorum? non enim lavant manus suas cum panem manducant.

But he answering, said to them: Why do you also transgress the commandment of God for your tradition? For God said:

He answered them, Why is it that you yourselves violate the commandment of God with your traditions?

Ipse autem respondens ait illis: Quare et vos transgredimini mandatum Dei propter traditionem vestram? Nam Deus dixit:

Honour thy father and mother: And: He that shall curse father or mother, let him die the death.

God has said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and again, He who curses his father or mother dies without hope of reprieve.

Honora patrem, et matrem: et, Qui maledixerit patri, vel matri, morte moriatur.

But you say: Whosoever shall say to father or mother, The gift whatsoever proceedeth from me, shall profit thee.

Whereas you say, If a man says to his father or mother, The offering which I make to God is all the advantage you will have from me,

Vos autem dicitis: Quicumque dixerit patri, vel matri: Munus, quodcumque est ex me, tibi proderit:

And he shall not honour his father or his mother: and you have made void the commandment of God for your tradition.

then father or mother can get no service from him. So by these traditions of yours you have made God’s law ineffectual.

et non honorificabit patrem suum, aut matrem suam: et irritum fecistis mandatum Dei propter traditionem vestram.

Hypocrites, well hath Isaias prophesied of you, saying:

You hypocrites, it was a true prophecy Isaias made of you, when he said,

Hypocritæ, bene prophetavit de vobis Isaias, dicens:

This people honoureth me with their lips: but their heart is far from me.
8
This people does me honour with its lips, but its heart is far from me.

Populus hic labiis me honorat: cor autem eorum longe est a me.

And in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines and commandments of men.

Their worship of me is vain, for the doctrines they teach are the commandments of men.

Sine causa autem colunt me, docentes doctrinas et mandata hominum.

And having called together the multitudes unto him, he said to them: Hear ye and understand.

Then he gathered the multitude about him, and said to them, Listen to this, and grasp what it means.

Et convocatis ad se turbis, dixit eis: Audite, et intelligite.

Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man: but what cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.

It is not what goes into a man’s mouth that makes him unclean; what makes a man unclean is what comes out of his mouth.

Non quod intrat in os, coinquinat hominem: sed quod procedit ex ore, hoc coinquinat hominem.

Then came his disciples, and said to him: Dost thou know that the Pharisees, when they heard this word, were scandalized?

Thereupon his disciples came and said to him, Dost thou know that the Pharisees, when they heard thy saying, took it amiss?

Tunc accedentes discipuli ejus, dixerunt ei: Scis quia pharisæi audito verbo hoc, scandalizati sunt?

But he answering, said: Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.

He answered, No plant but must be rooted up, if my heavenly Father has not planted it.

At ille respondens ait: Omnis plantatio, quam non plantavit Pater meus cælestis, eradicabitur.
14
Let them alone: they are blind, and leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both fall into the pit.

Let them say what they will; they are blind men leading the blind, and when one blind man leads another, they will fall into the ditch together.

Sinite illos: cæci sunt, et duces cæcorum; cæcus autem si cæco ducatum præstet, ambo in foveam cadunt.

And Peter answering, said to him: Expound to us this parable.

Peter answered him, Explain this parable to us.

Respondens autem Petrus dixit ei: Edissere nobis parabolam istam.

But he said: Are you also yet without understanding?
16
What, he said, are you still without wits?

At ille dixit: Adhuc et vos sine intellectu estis?
17
Do you not understand, that whatsoever entereth into the mouth, goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the privy?

Do you not observe that any uncleanness which finds its way into a man’s mouth travels down into his belly, and so is cast into the sewer;

Non intelligitis quia omne quod in os intrat, in ventrem vadit, et in secessum emittitur?

But the things which proceed out of the mouth, come forth from the heart, and those things defile a man.

whereas all that comes out of his mouth comes from the heart, and it is that which makes a man unclean?

Quæ autem procedunt de ore, de corde exeunt, et ea coinquinant hominem:
19
For from the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies.

It is from the heart that his wicked designs come, his sins of murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury and blasphemy.

de corde enim exeunt cogitationes malæ, homicidia, adulteria, fornicationes, furta, falsa testimonia, blasphemiæ:

These are the things that defile a man. But to eat with unwashed hands doth not defile a man.

It is these make a man unclean; he is not made unclean by eating without washing his hands.

hæc sunt, quæ coinquinant hominem. Non lotis autem manibus manducare, non coinquinat hominem.

And Jesus went from thence, and retired into the coast of Tyre and Sidon.

After this, Jesus left those parts and withdrew into the neighbourhood of Tyre and Sidon.

Et egressus inde Jesus secessit in partes Tyri et Sidonis.

And behold a woman of Canaan who came out of those coasts, crying out, said to him: Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David: my daughter is grievously troubled by a devil.

And here a woman, a Chanaanite by birth, who came from that country, cried aloud, Have pity on me, Lord, thou son of David. My daughter is cruelly troubled by an evil spirit.

Et ecce mulier chananæa a finibus illis egressa clamavit, dicens ei: Miserere mei, Domine fili David: filia mea male a dæmonio vexatur.

Who answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying: Send her away, for she crieth after us:

He gave her no word in answer; but his disciples came to him and pleaded with him; Rid us of her, they said, she is following us with her cries.

Qui non respondit ei verbum. Et accedentes discipuli ejus rogabant eum dicentes: Dimitte eam: quia clamat post nos.

And he answering, said: I was not sent but to the sheep that are lost of the house of Israel.

And he answered, My errand is only to the lost sheep that are of the house of Israel.

Ipse autem respondens ait: Non sum missus nisi ad oves, quæ perierunt domus Israël.

But she came and adored him, saying: Lord, help me.
25
Then the woman came up and said, falling at his feet, Lord, help me.

At illa venit, et adoravit eum, dicens: Domine, adjuva me.

Who answering, said: It is not good to take the bread of the children, and to cast it to the dogs.
26
He answered, It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.
26
Qui respondens ait: Non est bonum sumere panem filiorum, et mittere canibus.
27
But she said: Yea, Lord: for the whelps also eat of the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters.
27
Ah yes, Lord, she said; the dogs feed on the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.

At illa dixit: Etiam Domine: nam et catelli edunt de micis quæ cadunt de mensa dominorum suorum.
28
Then Jesus answering, said to her: O woman, great is thy faith: be it done to thee as thou wilt: and her daughter was cured from that hour.
28
And at that Jesus answered her, Woman, for this great faith of thine, let thy will be granted. And from that hour her daughter was cured.

Tunc respondens Jesus, ait illi: O mulier, magna est fides tua: fiat tibi sicut vis. Et sanata est filia ejus ex illa hora.

And when Jesus had passed away from thence, he came nigh the sea of Galilee: And going up into a mountain, he sat there.

Then Jesus left that country, and passed along the sea of Galilee, and went up into the mountain and sat down there.

Et cum transisset inde Jesus, venit secus mare Galilææ: et ascendens in montem, sedebat ibi.

And there came to him great multitudes, having with them the dumb, the blind, the lame, the maimed, and many others: and they cast them down at his feet, and he healed them:

Great multitudes came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the deaf, the crippled, and many besides, whom they laid at his feet; and he healed them:

Et accesserunt ad eum turbæ multæ, habentes secum mutos, cæcos, claudos, debiles, et alios multos: et projecerunt eos ad pedes ejus, et curavit eos,

So that the multitudes marvelled seeing the dumb speak, the lame walk, the blind see: and they glorified the God of Israel.

so that the multitudes were amazed to find the dumb speaking, the lame walking, and the blind recovering their sight; and they praised the God of Israel for it.

ita ut turbæ mirarentur, videntes mutos loquentes, claudos ambulantes, cæcos videntes: et magnificabant Deum Israël.

And Jesus called together his disciples, and said: I have compassion on the multitudes, because they continue with me now three days, and have not what to eat, and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.

But now Jesus called his disciples, and said, I am moved with pity for the multitude; it is three days now since they have been in attendance on me, and they have nothing to eat. I must not send them away fasting, or perhaps they will grow faint on their journey.

Jesus autem, convocatis discipulis suis, dixit: Misereor turbæ, quia triduo jam perseverant mecum, et non habent quod manducent: et dimittere eos jejunos nolo, ne deficiant in via.

And the disciples say unto him: Whence then should we have so many loaves in the desert, as to fill so great a multitude?

His disciples said to him, Where could we find loaves enough in a desert to feed such a multitude?

Et dicunt ei discipuli: Unde ergo nobis in deserto panes tantos, ut saturemus turbam tantam?

And Jesus said to them: How many loaves have you? But they said: Seven, and a few little fishes.
34
And Jesus asked them, How many loaves have you? Seven, they said, and a few small fishes.
34
Et ait illis Jesus: Quot habetis panes? At illi dixerunt: Septem, et paucos pisciculos.

And he commanded the multitude to sit down upon the ground.

Thereupon he bade the multitude sit down on the ground,

Et præcepit turbæ ut discumberent super terram.

And taking the seven loaves and the fishes, and giving thanks, he brake, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples gave to the people.

and he took the seven loaves and the fishes with them, and when he had blessed and broken he gave these to his disciples, and his disciples to the multitude.

Et accipiens septem panes, et pisces, et gratias agens, fregit, et dedit discipulis suis, et discipuli dederunt populo.

And they did all eat, and had their fill. And they took up seven baskets full, of what remained of the fragments.

And they all ate and had enough; and they took up what was left of the broken pieces, seven hampers full.

Et comederunt omnes, et saturati sunt. Et quod superfuit de fragmentis, tulerunt septem sportas plenas.

And they that did eat, were four thousand men, beside children and women.

Four thousand men had eaten, not reckoning women and children.

Erant autem qui manducaverunt quatuor millia hominum, extra parvulos et mulieres.

And having dismissed the multitude, he went up into a boat, and came into the coasts of Magedan.

And so, taking leave of the multitude, he went on board the ship, and crossed to the region of Magedan.

Et, dimissa turba, ascendit in naviculam: et venit in fines Magedan.
