Mane autem facto, consilium inierunt omnes principes sacerdotum et seniores populi adversus Jesum, ut eum morti traderent.

And when morning was come, all the chief priests and ancients of the people took counsel against Jesus, that they might put him to death.

At day-break, all the chief priests and elders of the people laid their plans for putting Jesus to death,

Et vinctum adduxerunt eum, et tradiderunt Pontio Pilato præsidi.

And they brought him bound, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

and they led him away in bonds, and gave him up to the governor, Pontius Pilate.

Tunc videns Judas, qui eum tradidit, quod damnatus esset, pœnitentia ductus, retulit triginta argenteos principibus sacerdotum, et senioribus,

Then Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, repenting himself, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and ancients,

And now Judas, his betrayer, was full of remorse at seeing him condemned, so that he brought back to the chief priests and elders their thirty pieces of silver;

dicens: Peccavi, tradens sanguinem justum. At illi dixerunt: Quid ad nos? tu videris.

Saying: I have sinned in betraying innocent blood. But they said: What is that to us? look thou to it.

I have sinned, he told them, in betraying the blood of an innocent man. What is that to us? they said. It concerns thee only.

Et projectis argenteis in templo, recessit: et abiens laqueo se suspendit.

And casting down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed: and went and hanged himself with an halter.

Whereupon he left them, throwing down the pieces of silver there in the temple, and went and hanged himself.

Principes autem sacerdotum, acceptis argenteis, dixerunt: Non licet eos mittere in corbonam: quia pretium sanguinis est.

But the chief priests having taken the pieces of silver, said: It is not lawful to put them into the corbona, because it is the price of blood.

The chief priests, thus recovering the money, said, It must not be put in the treasury, since it is the price of blood;

Consilio autem inito, emerunt ex illis agrum figuli, in sepulturam peregrinorum.

And after they had consulted together, they bought with them the potter’s field, to be a burying place for strangers.

Propter hoc vocatus est ager ille, Haceldama, hoc est, Ager sanguinis, usque in hodiernum diem.

For this cause that field was called Haceldama, that is, The field of blood, even to this day.

Tunc impletum est quod dictum est per Jeremiam prophetam, dicentem: Et acceperunt triginta argenteos pretium appretiati, quem appretiaverunt a filiis Israël:

Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremias the prophet, saying: And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was prized, whom they prized of the children of Israel.

And so the word was fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet Jeremy, when he said, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of one who was appraised, for men of the race of Israel appraised him,

And they gave them unto the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed to me.

Jesus autem stetit ante præsidem, et interrogavit eum præses, dicens: Tu es rex Judæorum? Dicit illi Jesus: Tu dicis.

And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, saying: Art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus saith to him: Thou sayest it.

But Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked him, Art thou the king of the Jews? Jesus told him, Thy own lips have said it.

Et cum accusaretur a principibus sacerdotum et senioribus, nihil respondit.

And when he was accused by the chief priests and ancients, he answered nothing.

And when the chief priests and elders brought their accusation against him, he made no answer.

Tunc dicit illi Pilatus: Non audis quanta adversum te dicunt testimonia?

Then Pilate saith to him: Dost not thou hear how great testimonies they allege against thee?

Then Pilate said to him, Dost thou not hear all the testimony they bring against thee?

Et non respondit ei ad ullum verbum, ita ut miraretur præses vehementer.

And he answered him to never a word; so that the governor wondered exceedingly.

But Jesus would not answer any of their charges, so that the governor was full of astonishment.

Per diem autem solemnem consueverat præses populo dimittere unum vinctum, quem voluissent:

Now upon the solemn day the governor was accustomed to release to the people one prisoner, whom they would.

At the festival, the governor used to grant to the multitude the liberty of any one prisoner they should choose;

habebat autem tunc vinctum insignem, qui dicebatur Barabbas.

And he had then a notorious prisoner, that was called Barabbas.

and there was one notable prisoner then in custody, whose name was Barabbas;

Congregatis ergo illis, dixit Pilatus: Quem vultis dimittam vobis: Barabbam, an Jesum, qui dicitur Christus?

They therefore being gathered together, Pilate said: Whom will you that I release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus that is called Christ?

so, when they gathered about him, Pilate asked them, Whom shall I release? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?

Sciebat enim quod per invidiam tradidissent eum.

For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

He knew well that they had only given him up out of malice;

Sedente autem illo pro tribunali, misit ad eum uxor ejus, dicens: Nihil tibi, et justo illi: multa enim passa sum hodie per visum propter eum.

And as he was sitting in the place of judgment, his wife sent to him, saying: Have thou nothing to do with that just man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

and even as he sat on the judgement-seat, his wife had sent him a message, Do not meddle with this innocent man; I dreamed to-day that I suffered much on his account.

Principes autem sacerdotum et seniores persuaserunt populis ut peterent Barabbam, Jesum vero perderent.

But the chief priests and ancients persuaded the people, that they should ask Barabbas, and make Jesus away.

But the chief priests and elders had persuaded the multitude to ask for Barabbas and have Jesus put to death;

Respondens autem præses, ait illis: Quem vultis vobis de duobus dimitti? At illi dixerunt: Barabbam.

And the governor answering, said to them: Whether will you of the two to be released unto you? But they said, Barabbas.

and so, when the governor openly asked them, Which of the two would you have me release? they said, Barabbas.

Dicit illis Pilatus: Quid igitur faciam de Jesu, qui dicitur Christus?

Pilate saith to them: What shall I do then with Jesus that is called Christ? They say all: Let him be crucified.

Pilate said to them, What am I to do, then, with Jesus, who is called Christ? They said, Let him be crucified.

Dicunt omnes: Crucifigatur. Ait illis præses: Quid enim mali fecit? At illi magis clamabant dicentes: Crucifigatur.

The governor said to them: Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying: Let him be crucified.

And when the governor said, Why, what wrong has he done? they cried louder than ever, Let him be crucified.

Videns autem Pilatus quia nihil proficeret, sed magis tumultus fieret: accepta aqua, lavit manus coram populo, dicens: Innocens ego sum a sanguine justi hujus: vos videritis.

And Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made; taking water washed his hands before the people, saying: I am innocent of the blood of this just man; look you to it.

And so, finding that his good offices went for nothing, and the uproar only became worse, Pilate sent for water and washed his hands in full sight of the multitude, saying as he did so, I have no part in the death of this innocent man; it concerns you only.

Et respondens universus populus, dixit: Sanguis ejus super nos, et super filios nostros.

And the whole people answering, said: His blood be upon us and upon our children.

Then he released to them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him unto them to be crucified.

Tunc milites præsidis suscipientes Jesum in prætorium, congregaverunt ad eum universam cohortem:

Then the soldiers of the governor taking Jesus into the hall, gathered together unto him the whole band;

After this, the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the palace, and gathered the whole of their company about him.

et exuentes eum, chlamydem coccineam circumdederunt ei,

And stripping him, they put a scarlet cloak about him.

First they stripped him, and arrayed him in a scarlet cloak;

et plectentes coronam de spinis, posuerunt super caput ejus, et arundinem in dextera ejus. Et genu flexo ante eum, illudebant ei, dicentes: Ave rex Judæorum.

And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand. And bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, King of the Jews.

then they put on his head a crown which they had woven out of thorns, and a rod in his right hand, and mocked him by kneeling down before him, and saying, Hail, king of the Jews.

Et exspuentes in eum, acceperunt arundinem, et percutiebant caput ejus.

And spitting upon him, they took the reed, and struck his head.

And they spat upon him, and took the rod from him and beat him over the head with it.

Et postquam illuserunt ei, exuerunt eum chlamyde, et induerunt eum vestimentis ejus, et duxerunt eum ut crucifigerent.

And after they had mocked him, they took off the cloak from him, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify him.

At last they had done with mockery; stripping him of the scarlet cloak, they put his own garments on him, and led him away to be crucified.

Exeuntes autem invenerunt hominem Cyrenæum, nomine Simonem: hunc angariaverunt ut tolleret crucem ejus.

And going out, they found a man of Cyrene, named Simon: him they forced to take up his cross.

As for his cross, they forced a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, whom they met on their way out, to carry it;

Et venerunt in locum qui dicitur Golgotha, quod est Calvariæ locus.

And they came to the place that is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary.

and so they reached a place called Golgotha, that is, the place named after a skull.

Et dederunt ei vinum bibere cum felle mistum. Et cum gustasset, noluit bibere.

And they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall. And when he had tasted, he would not drink.

Here they offered him a draught of wine, mixed with gall, which he tasted, but would not drink,

Postquam autem crucifixerunt eum, diviserunt vestimenta ejus, sortem mittentes: ut impleretur quod dictum est per prophetam dicentem: Diviserunt sibi vestimenta mea, et super vestem meam miserunt sortem.

And after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: They divided my garments among them; and upon my vesture they cast lots.

and then crucified him, dividing his garments among them by casting lots. The prophecy must be fulfilled, They divide my spoils among them, cast lots for my garments.

Et sedentes servabant eum.

And they sat and watched him.

There, then, they sat, keeping guard over him.

Et imposuerunt super caput ejus causam ipsius scriptam: Hic est Jesus rex Judæorum.

And they put over his head his cause written: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Over his head they set a written proclamation of his offence, This is Jesus, the king of the Jews;

Tunc crucifixi sunt cum eo duo latrones: unus a dextris, et unus a sinistris.

Then were crucified with him two thieves: one on the right hand, and one on the left.

and with him they crucified two thieves, one on his right and one on his left.

Prætereuntes autem blasphemabant eum moventes capita sua,

And they that passed by, blasphemed him, wagging their heads,

The passers-by blasphemed against him, tossing their heads;
40
et dicentes: Vah! qui destruis templum Dei, et in triduo illud reædificas: salva temetipsum: si Filius Dei es, descende de cruce.

And saying: Vah, thou that destroyest the temple of God, and in three days dost rebuild it: save thy own self: if thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

Come now, they said, thou who wouldst destroy the temple and build it up in three days, rescue thyself; come down from that cross, if thou art the Son of God.

Similiter et principes sacerdotum illudentes cum scribis et senioribus dicebant:

In like manner also the chief priests, with the scribes and ancients, mocking, said:

The chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him in the same way.

Alios salvos fecit, seipsum non potest salvum facere: si rex Israël est, descendat nunc de cruce, et credimus ei:

He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

He saved others, they said, he cannot save himself. If he is the king of Israel, he has but to come down from the cross, here and now, and we will believe in him.

confidit in Deo: liberet nunc, si vult eum: dixit enim: Quia Filius Dei sum.

He trusted in God; let him now deliver him if he will have him; for he said: I am the Son of God.

Idipsum autem et latrones, qui crucifixi erant cum eo, improperabant ei.

And the selfsame thing the thieves also, that were crucified with him, reproached him with.

Even the thieves who were crucified with him uttered the same taunts.

A sexta autem hora tenebræ factæ sunt super universam terram usque ad horam nonam.

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over the whole earth, until the ninth hour.

From the sixth hour onwards there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour;

Et circa horam nonam clamavit Jesus voce magna, dicens: Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani? hoc est: Deus meus, Deus meus, ut quid dereliquisti me?

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying: Eli, Eli, lamma sabacthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Quidam autem illic stantes, et audientes, dicebant: Eliam vocat iste.

And some that stood there and heard, said: This man calleth Elias.

Et continuo currens unus ex eis, acceptam spongiam implevit aceto, et imposuit arundini, et dabat ei bibere.

And immediately one of them running took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar; and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.

and thereupon one of them ran to fetch a sponge, which he filled with vinegar and fixed upon a rod, and offered to let him drink;

Ceteri vero dicebant: Sine, videamus an veniat Elias liberans eum.

And the others said: Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to deliver him.

the rest said, Wait, let us see whether Elias is to come and save him.

Jesus autem iterum clamans voce magna, emisit spiritum.

And Jesus again crying with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

Et ecce velum templi scissum est in duas partes a summo usque deorsum: et terra mota est, et petræ scissæ sunt,

And behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top even to the bottom, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were rent.

And all at once, the veil of the temple was torn this way and that from the top to the bottom, and the earth shook, and the rocks parted asunder;

et monumenta aperta sunt: et multa corpora sanctorum, qui dormierant, surrexerunt.

And the graves were opened: and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose,

Et exeuntes de monumentis post resurrectionem ejus, venerunt in sanctam civitatem, et apparuerunt multis.

And coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, came into the holy city, and appeared to many.

Centurio autem, et qui cum eo erant, custodientes Jesum, viso terræmotu, et his quæ fiebant, timuerunt valde, dicentes: Vere Filius Dei erat iste.

Now the centurion and they that were with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake, and the things that were done, were sore afraid, saying: Indeed this was the Son of God.

So that the centurion and those who kept guard over Jesus with him, when they perceived the earthquake and all that befell, were overcome with fear; No doubt, they said, but this was the Son of God.

Erant autem ibi mulieres multæ a longe, quæ secutæ erant Jesum a Galilæa, ministrantes ei:

And there were there many women afar off, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:

Many women stood watching from far off; they had followed Jesus from Galilee, to minister to him;

inter quas erat Maria Magdalene, et Maria Jacobi, et Joseph mater, et mater filiorum Zebedæi.

Among whom was Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

And now it was evening, and a man came forward, by name Joseph, a rich man from Arimathea, who followed Jesus as a disciple like the rest;

hic accessit ad Pilatum, et petiit corpus Jesu. Tunc Pilatus jussit reddi corpus.

He went to Pilate, and asked the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded that the body should be delivered.

he it was who approached Pilate, and asked to have the body of Jesus; whereupon Pilate ordered that the body should be given up.

Et accepto corpore, Joseph involvit illud in sindone munda,

And Joseph taking the body, wrapped it up in a clean linen cloth.

Joseph took possession of the body, and wrapped it in a clean winding-sheet;

et posuit illud in monumento suo novo, quod exciderat in petra. Et advolvit saxum magnum ad ostium monumenti, et abiit.

And laid it in his own new monument, which he had hewed out in a rock. And he rolled a great stone to the door of the monument, and went his way.

then he buried it in a new grave, which he had fashioned for himself out of the rock, and left it there, rolling a great stone against the grave-door.

Erant autem ibi Maria Magdalene, et altera Maria, sedentes contra sepulchrum.

And there was there Mary Magdalen, and the other Mary sitting over against the sepulchre.

When he had gone, there were two who sat on there opposite the tomb, Mary Magdalen and the other Mary with her.

Altera autem die, quæ est post Parasceven, convenerunt principes sacerdotum et pharisæi ad Pilatum,

And the next day, which followed the day of preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees came together to Pilate,

dicentes: Domine, recordati sumus, quia seductor ille dixit adhuc vivens: Post tres dies resurgam.

Saying: Sir, we have remembered, that that seducer said, while he was yet alive: After three days I will rise again.

and said, Sir, we have recalled it to memory that this deceiver, while he yet lived, said, I am to rise again after three days.

Jube ergo custodiri sepulchrum usque in diem tertium: ne forte veniant discipuli ejus, et furentur eum, et dicant plebi: Surrexit a mortuis: et erit novissimus error pejor priore.

Command therefore the sepulchre to be guarded until the third day: lest perhaps his disciples come and steal him away, and say to the people: He is risen from the dead; and the last error shall be worse than the first.

Give orders, then, that his tomb shall be securely guarded until the third day; or perhaps his disciples will come and steal him away. If they should then say to the people, He has risen from the dead, this last deceit will be more dangerous than the old.

Ait illis Pilatus: Habetis custodiam, ite, custodite sicut scitis.

Pilate saith to them: You have a guard; go, guard it as you know.

Pilate said to them, You have guards; away with you, make it secure as you best know how.

Illi autem abeuntes, munierunt sepulchrum, signantes lapidem, cum custodibus.

And they departing, made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting guards.

And they went and made the tomb secure, putting a seal on the stone and setting a guard over it.
