Chapter 16
|
Vulgate><Knox Bible><Douay-Rheims
1
1
And the Pharisees and Sadducees came and put him to the test, asking him to shew them a sign from heaven.
1
And there came to him the Pharisees and Sadducees tempting: and they asked him to shew them a sign from heaven.
2
At ille respondens, ait illis: Facto vespere dicitis: Serenum erit, rubicundum est enim cælum.
2
But he answered them, When evening comes, you say, It is fair weather, the sky is red;
2
But he answered and said to them: When it is evening, you say, It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.
3
3
or at sunrise, There will be a storm to-day, the sky is red and lowering. You know, then, how to read the face of heaven; can you not read the signs of appointed times?
3
And in the morning: To day there will be a storm, for the sky is red and lowering. You know then how to discern the face of the sky: and can you not know the signs of the times?
4
4
It is a wicked and unfaithful generation that asks for a sign; the only sign that will be given to it is the sign of the prophet Jonas. And so he went on his way and left them.
4
A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign: and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. And he left them, and went away.
5
5
And they crossed the sea, and his disciples found that they had forgotten to take bread with them.
5
And when his disciples were come over the water, they had forgotten to take bread.
6
6
So, when Jesus said to them, See that you have nothing to do with the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees,
6
Who said to them: Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
7
At illi cogitabant intra se dicentes: Quia panes non accepimus.
7
they were anxious in their minds; We have brought no bread, they said.
7
But they thought within themselves, saying: Because we have taken no bread.
8
Sciens autem Jesus, dixit: Quid cogitatis intra vos modicæ fidei, quia panes non habetis?
8
Jesus knew it, and said to them, Men of little faith, what is this anxiety in your minds, that you have brought no bread with you?
8
And Jesus knowing it, said: Why do you think within yourselves, O ye of little faith, for that you have no bread?
9
Nondum intelligitis, neque recordamini quinque panum in quinque millia hominum, et quot cophinos sumpsistis?
9
Have you no wits even now, or have you forgotten the five thousand and their five loaves, and the number of baskets you filled?
9
Do you not yet understand, neither do you remember the five loaves among five thousand men, and how many baskets you took up?
10
10
Or the four thousand and their seven loaves, and the number of hampers you filled then?
10
Nor the seven loaves among four thousand men, and how many baskets you took up?
11
11
How could you suppose that I was thinking of bread, when I said, Have nothing to do with the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?
11
Why do you not understand that it was not concerning bread I said to you: Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?
12
Tunc intellexerunt quia non dixerit cavendum a fermento panum, sed a doctrina pharisæorum et sadducæorum.
12
Then they understood that his warning was against the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees, not against leavened bread.
12
Then they understood that he said not that they should beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13
13
Then Jesus came into the neighbourhood of Caesarea Philippi; and there he asked his disciples, What do men say of the Son of Man? Who do they think he is?
13
And Jesus came into the quarters of Cesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is?
14
14
Some say John the Baptist, they told him, others Elias, others again, Jeremy or one of the prophets.
14
But they said: Some John the Baptist, and other some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15
Dicit illis Jesus: Vos autem, quem me esse dicitis?
15
Jesus said to them, And what of you? Who do you say that I am?
15
Jesus saith to them: But whom do you say that I am?
16
Respondens Simon Petrus dixit: Tu es Christus, Filius Dei vivi.
16
Then Simon Peter answered, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
16
Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God.
17
17
And Jesus answered him, Blessed art thou, Simon son of Jona; it is not flesh and blood, it is my Father in heaven that has revealed this to thee.
17
And Jesus answering, said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven.
18
18
And I tell thee this in my turn, that thou art Peter, and it is upon this rock that I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it;
18
And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19
Et tibi dabo claves regni cælorum. Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in cælis: et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in cælis.
19
and I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
19
And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.
20
Tunc præcepit discipulis suis ut nemini dicerent quia ipse esset Jesus Christus.
20
Then he strictly forbade them to tell any man that he, Jesus, was the Christ.
20
Then he commanded his disciples, that they should tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ.
21
Exinde cœpit Jesus ostendere discipulis suis, quia oporteret eum ire Jerosolymam, et multa pati a senioribus, et scribis, et principibus sacerdotum, et occidi, et tertia die resurgere.
21
From that time onwards Jesus began to make it known to his disciples that he must go up to Jerusalem, and there, with much ill usage from the chief priests and elders and scribes, must be put to death, and rise again on the third day.
21
From that time Jesus began to shew to his disciples, that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the ancients and scribes and chief priests, and be put to death, and the third day rise again.
22
22
Whereupon Peter, drawing him to his side, began remonstrating with him; Never, Lord, he said; no such thing shall befall thee.
22
And Peter taking him, began to rebuke him, saying: Lord, be it far from thee, this shall not be unto thee.
23
23
At which he turned round and said to Peter, Back, Satan; thou art a stone in my path; for these thoughts of thine are man’s, not God’s.
23
Who turning, said to Peter: Go behind me, Satan, thou art a scandal unto me: because thou savourest not the things that are of God, but the things that are of men.
24
Tunc Jesus dixit discipulis suis: Si quis vult post me venire, abneget semetipsum, et tollat crucem suam, et sequatur me.
24
Jesus also said to his disciples, If any man has a mind to come my way, let him renounce self, and take up his cross, and follow me.
24
Then Jesus said to his disciples: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
25
25
The man who tries to save his life shall lose it; it is the man who loses his life for my sake that will secure it.
25
For he that will save his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall find it.
26
26
How is a man the better for it, if he gains the whole world at the cost of losing his own soul? For a man’s soul, what price can be high enough?
26
For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?
27
27
The Son of Man will come hereafter in his Father’s glory with his angels about him, and he will recompense everyone, then, according to his works.
27
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels: and then will he render to every man according to his works.
28
28
Believe me, there are those standing here who will not taste of death before they have seen the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.
28
Amen I say to you, there are some of them that stand here, that shall not taste death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
