The kingdom of heaven is like to an householder, who went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.

Here is an image of the kingdom of heaven; a rich man went out at day-break to hire labourers for work in his vineyard;

Simile est regnum cælorum homini patrifamilias, qui exiit primo mane conducere operarios in vineam suam.

And having agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

and when he sent them out into his vineyard he agreed with the labourers on a silver piece for the day’s wages.

Conventione autem facta cum operariis ex denario diurno, misit eos in vineam suam.

And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing in the market place idle.

About the third hour he came out again, and found others standing idle in the market-place;

Et egressus circa horam tertiam, vidit alios stantes in foro otiosos,

And he said to them: Go you also into my vineyard, and I will give you what shall be just.

and to these also he said, Away with you to the vineyard like the others; you shall have whatever payment is fair.

et dixit illis: Ite et vos in vineam meam, et quod justum fuerit dabo vobis.

And they went their way. And again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did in like manner.

Away they went; and at noon, and once more at the ninth hour, he came out and did the like.

Illi autem abierunt. Iterum autem exiit circa sextam et nonam horam: et fecit similiter.

But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing, and he saith to them: Why stand you here all the day idle?

Yet he found others standing there when he came out at the eleventh hour; How is it, he said to them, that you are standing here, and have done nothing all the day?

Circa undecimam vero exiit, et invenit alios stantes, et dicit illis: Quid hic statis tota die otiosi?

They say to him: Because no man hath hired us. He saith to them: Go you also into my vineyard.

They told him, It is because nobody has hired us; and he said, Away with you to the vineyard like the rest.

Dicunt ei: Quia nemo nos conduxit. Dicit illis: Ite et vos in vineam meam.

And when evening was come, the lord of the vineyard saith to his steward: Call the labourers and pay them their hire, beginning from the last even to the first.

And now it was evening, and the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, Send for the workmen and pay them their wages, beginning with the last comers and going back to the first.

Cum sero autem factum esset, dicit dominus vineæ procuratori suo: Voca operarios, et redde illis mercedem incipiens a novissimis usque ad primos.

When therefore they were come, that came about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.

And so the men who were hired about the eleventh hour came forward, and each was paid a silver piece.

Cum venissent ergo qui circa undecimam horam venerant, acceperunt singulos denarios.

But when the first also came, they thought that they should receive more: and they also received every man a penny.

So that when the others came, who were hired first, they hoped to receive more. But they were paid a silver piece each, like their fellows.

Venientes autem et primi, arbitrati sunt quod plus essent accepturi: acceperunt autem et ipsi singulos denarios.

And receiving it they murmured against the master of the house,

And they were indignant with the rich man over their pay.

Et accipientes murmurabant adversus patremfamilias,

Saying: These last have worked but one hour, and thou hast made them equal to us, that have borne the burden of the day and the heats.

Here are these late-comers, they said, who have worked but one hour, and thou hast made no difference between them and us, who have borne the day’s burden and the heat.

dicentes: Hi novissimi una hora fecerunt, et pares illos nobis fecisti, qui portavimus pondus diei, et æstus.

But he answering said to one of them: Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst thou not agree with me for a penny?

But he answered one of them thus; My friend, I am not doing thee a wrong; did we not agree on a silver piece for thy wages?

At ille respondens uni eorum, dixit: Amice, non facio tibi injuriam: nonne ex denario convenisti mecum?

Take what is thine, and go thy way: I will also give to this last even as to thee.

Take what is thy due, and away with thee; it is my pleasure to give as much to this late-comer as thee.

Tolle quod tuum est, et vade: volo autem et huic novissimo dare sicut et tibi.

Or, is it not lawful for me to do what I will? is thy eye evil, because I am good?

Am I not free to use my money as I will? Must thou give me sour looks, because I am generous?

Aut non licet mihi quod volo, facere? an oculus tuus nequam est, quia ego bonus sum?

So shall the last be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few chosen.

So it is that they shall be first who were last, and they shall be last who were first. Many are called, but few are chosen.

Sic erunt novissimi primi, et primi novissimi. Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi.

And Jesus going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart, and said to them:

And now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, and he took his twelve disciples aside on the way, and warned them,

Et ascendens Jesus Jerosolymam, assumpsit duodecim discipulos secreto, et ait illis:

Behold we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death.

Now we are going up to Jerusalem; and there the Son of Man will be given up into the hands of the chief priests and scribes, who will condemn him to death.

Ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam, et Filius hominis tradetur principibus sacerdotum, et scribis, et condemnabunt eum morte,

And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to be mocked, and scourged, and crucified, and the third day he shall rise again.

And these will give him up into the hands of the Gentiles, to be mocked and scourged and crucified; but on the third day he will rise again.

et tradent eum gentibus ad illudendum, et flagellandum, et crucifigendum, et tertia die resurget.

Then came to him the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons, adoring and asking something of him.

Thereupon the mother of the sons of Zebedee brought them to him, falling on her knees to make a request of him.

Tunc accessit ad eum mater filiorum Zebedæi cum filiis suis, adorans et petens aliquid ab eo.

Who said to her: What wilt thou? She saith to him: Say that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left, in thy kingdom.

And when he asked her, What is thy will? she said to him, Here are my two sons; grant that in thy kingdom one may take his place on thy right and the other on thy left.

Qui dixit ei: Quid vis? Ait illi: Dic ut sedeant hi duo filii mei, unus ad dexteram tuam, et unus ad sinistram in regno tuo.

And Jesus answering, said: You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink? They say to him: We can.

But Jesus answered, You do not know what it is you ask. Have you strength to drink of the cup I am to drink of? They said, We have.

Respondens autem Jesus, dixit: Nescitis quid petatis. Potestis bibere calicem, quem ego bibiturus sum? Dicunt ei: Possumus.

He saith to them: My chalice indeed you shall drink; but to sit on my right or left hand, is not mine to give to you, but to them for whom it is prepared by my Father.

And he told them, You shall indeed drink of my cup; but a place on my right hand or my left is not mine to give; it is for those for whom my Father has destined it.

Ait illis: Calicem quidem meum bibetis: sedere autem ad dexteram meam vel sinistram non est meum dare vobis, sed quibus paratum est a Patre meo.

And the ten hearing it, were moved with indignation against the two brethren.

The ten others were angry with the two brethren when they heard it;

Et audientes decem, indignati sunt de duobus fratribus.

But Jesus called them to him, and said: You know that the princes of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that are the greater, exercise power upon them.

but Jesus called them to him, and said, You know that, among the Gentiles, those who bear rule lord it over them, and great men vaunt their power over them;

Jesus autem vocavit eos ad se, et ait: Scitis quia principes gentium dominantur eorum: et qui majores sunt, potestatem exercent in eos.

It shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be the greater among you, let him be your minister:

with you it must be otherwise; whoever would be a great man among you, must be your servant,

Non ita erit inter vos: sed quicumque voluerit inter vos major fieri, sit vester minister:

And he that will be first among you, shall be your servant.

and whoever has a mind to be first among you, must be your slave.

et qui voluerit inter vos primus esse, erit vester servus.

Even as the Son of man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a redemption for many.

So it is that the Son of Man did not come to have service done him; he came to serve others, and to give his life as a ransom for the lives of many.

Sicut Filius hominis non venit ministrari, sed ministrare, et dare animam suam redemptionem pro multis.

And when they went out from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.

When they were leaving Jericho, there was a great multitude that followed him.

Et egredientibus illis ab Jericho, secuta est eum turba multa,

And behold two blind men sitting by the way side, heard that Jesus passed by, and they cried out, saying: O Lord, thou son of David, have mercy on us.

And there, by the road-side, sat two blind folk, who heard of Jesus’ passing by, and cried aloud, Lord, son of David, have pity on us.

et ecce duo cæci sedentes secus viam audierunt quia Jesus transiret: et clamaverunt, dicentes: Domine, miserere nostri, fili David.

And the multitude rebuked them that they should hold their peace. But they cried out the more, saying: O Lord, thou son of David, have mercy on us.

The multitude rebuked them, bidding them be silent; but they cried out all the more, Son of David, Lord, have pity on us.

Turba autem increpabat eos ut tacerent. At illi magis clamabant, dicentes: Domine, miserere nostri, fili David.

And Jesus stood, and called them, and said: What will ye that I do to you?

Then Jesus stopped, and called them to him; What would you have me do for you? he asked.

Et stetit Jesus, et vocavit eos, et ait: Quid vultis ut faciam vobis?

They say to him: Lord, that our eyes be opened.

Lord, they said to him, we would have our eyes opened.

Dicunt illi: Domine, ut aperiantur oculi nostri.

And Jesus having compassion on them, touched their eyes. And immediately they saw, and followed him.

And Jesus, moved with compassion, touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight, and followed after him.

Misertus autem eorum Jesus, tetigit oculos eorum. Et confestim viderunt, et secuti sunt eum.
