And Jesus answering, spoke again in parables to them, saying:

And Jesus once more spoke to them in parables;

Et respondens Jesus, dixit iterum in parabolis eis, dicens:

The kingdom of heaven is likened to a king, who made a marriage for his son.

Here is an image, he said, of the kingdom of heaven; there was once a king, who held a marriage-feast for his son,

Simile factum est regnum cælorum homini regi, qui fecit nuptias filio suo.

And he sent his servants, to call them that were invited to the marriage; and they would not come.

and sent out his servants with a summons to all those whom he had invited to the wedding; but they would not come.

Et misit servos suos vocare invitatos ad nuptias, et nolebant venire.
4
Again he sent other servants, saying: Tell them that were invited, Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my beeves and fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come ye to the marriage.

Then he sent other servants with a fresh summons, bidding them tell those who had been invited, By this, I have prepared my feast, the oxen have been killed, and the fatlings, all is ready now; come to the wedding.

Iterum misit alios servos, dicens: Dicite invitatis: Ecce prandium meum paravi, tauri mei et altilia occisa sunt, et omnia parata: venite ad nuptias.

But they neglected, and went their ways, one to his farm, and another to his merchandise.

But still they paid no heed, and went off on other errands, one to his farm in the country, and another to his trading;

Illi autem neglexerunt: et abierunt, alius in villam suam, alius vero ad negotiationem suam:

And the rest laid hands on his servants, and having treated them contumeliously, put them to death.

and the rest laid hands upon his servants, and insulted and killed them.

But when the king had heard of it, he was angry: and sending his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and burnt their city.

The king fell into a rage when he heard of it, and sent out his troops to put those murderers to death, and burn their city.

Rex autem cum audisset, iratus est: et missis exercitibus suis, perdidit homicidas illos, et civitatem illorum succendit.

Then he saith to his servants: The marriage indeed is ready; but they that were invited were not worthy.

After this, he said to his servants, Here is the marriage-feast all ready, and those who had been invited have proved unworthy of it.

Tunc ait servis suis: Nuptiæ quidem paratæ sunt, sed qui invitati erant, non fuerunt digni:

Go ye therefore into the highways; and as many as you shall find, call to the marriage.

You must go out to the street-corners, and invite all whom you find there to the wedding.

ite ergo ad exitus viarum, et quoscumque inveneritis, vocate ad nuptias.

And his servants going forth into the ways, gathered together all that they found, both bad and good: and the marriage was filled with guests.

And his servants went out into the streets, where they mustered all they could find, rogues and honest men together; and so the wedding had its full tale of guests.

Et egressi servi ejus in vias, congregaverunt omnes quos invenerunt, malos et bonos: et impletæ sunt nuptiæ discumbentium.

And the king went in to see the guests: and he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment.

But when the king came in to look at the company, he saw a man there who had no wedding-garment on;

Intravit autem rex ut videret discumbentes, et vidit ibi hominem non vestitum veste nuptiali.

And he saith to him: Friend, how camest thou in hither not having on a wedding garment? But he was silent.

My friend, he said, how didst thou come to be here without a wedding-garment? And he made no reply.

Et ait illi: Amice, quomodo huc intrasti non habens vestem nuptialem? At ille obmutuit.

Then the king said to the waiters: Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Whereupon the king said to his servants, Bind him hand and foot, and cast him out into the darkness, where there shall be weeping, and gnashing of teeth.

Tunc dicit rex ministris: Ligatis manibus et pedibus ejus, mittite eum in tenebras exteriores: ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium.

Then the Pharisees going, consulted among themselves how to insnare him in his speech.

After this the Pharisees withdrew, and plotted together, to make him betray himself in his talk.

Tunc abeuntes pharisæi, consilium inierunt ut caperent eum in sermone.

And they sent to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying: Master, we know that thou art a true speaker, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou dost not regard the person of men.

And they sent their own disciples to him, with those who were of Herod’s party, and said, Master, we know well that thou art sincere, and teachest in all sincerity the way of God; that thou holdest no one in awe, making no distinction between man and man;

Et mittunt ei discipulos suos cum Herodianis, dicentes: Magister, scimus quia verax es, et viam Dei in veritate doces, et non est tibi cura de aliquo: non enim respicis personam hominum:

Tell us therefore what dost thou think, is it lawful to give tribute to Cæsar, or not?

tell us, then, is it right to pay tribute to Caesar, or not?

dic ergo nobis quid tibi videtur, licet censum dare Cæsari, an non?

But Jesus knowing their wickedness, said: Why do you tempt me, ye hypocrites?

Jesus saw their malice; Hypocrites, he said, why do you thus put me to the test?

Cognita autem Jesus nequitia eorum, ait: Quid me tentatis, hypocritæ?

Shew me the coin of the tribute. And they offered him a penny.

Shew me the coinage in which the tribute is paid. So they brought him a silver piece,

ostendite mihi numisma census. At illi obtulerunt ei denarium.

And Jesus saith to them: Whose image and inscription is this?

and he asked them, Whose is this likeness? Whose name is inscribed on it?

Et ait illis Jesus: Cujus est imago hæc, et superscriptio?

They say to him: Cæsar’s. Then he saith to them: Render therefore to Cæsar the things that are Cæsar’s; and to God, the things that are God’s.

Caesar’s, they said; whereupon he answered, Why then, give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.

Dicunt ei: Cæsaris. Tunc ait illis: Reddite ergo quæ sunt Cæsaris, Cæsari: et quæ sunt Dei, Deo.

And hearing this they wondered, and leaving him, went their ways.

And they went away and left him in peace, full of admiration at his words.

That day there came to him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and asked him,

On that day, too, he was approached with a question by the Sadducees, men who say that there is no resurrection;

Saying: Master, Moses said: If a man die having no son, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up issue to his brother.

Master, they said, Moses told us, If a man leaves no children when he dies, his brother shall marry the widow by right of kinship, and beget children in the dead brother’s name.

Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first having married a wife, died; and not having issue, left his wife to his brother.

We had seven brothers once in our country, of whom the first died, a married man without issue, bequeathing his wife to the second.

Erant autem apud nos septem fratres: et primus, uxore ducta, defunctus est: et non habens semen, reliquit uxorem suam fratri suo.

In like manner the second, and the third, and so on to the seventh.

And the same befell the second brother, and then the third, and in the end all seven,

And last of all the woman died also.

At the resurrection therefore whose wife of the seven shall she be? for they all had her.

And now, when the dead rise again, which of the seven will be her husband, since she was wife to them all?

In resurrectione ergo cujus erit de septem uxor? omnes enim habuerunt eam.

And Jesus answering, said to them: You err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.

Jesus answered them, You are wrong; you do not understand the scriptures, or what is the power of God.

Respondens autem Jesus, ait illis: Erratis nescientes Scripturas, neque virtutem Dei.

For in the resurrection they shall neither marry nor be married; but shall be as the angels of God in heaven.

When the dead rise again, there is no marrying and giving in marriage; they are as the angels in heaven are.

In resurrectione enim neque nubent, neque nubentur: sed erunt sicut angeli Dei in cælo.

And concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read that which was spoken by God, saying to you:

But now, in the matter of the resurrection, did you never read what God himself said:

I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

And the multitudes hearing it, were in admiration at his doctrine.

But the Pharisees hearing that he had silenced the Sadducees, came together.

And now the Pharisees, hearing how he had put the Sadducees to silence, met together;

And one of them, a doctor of the law, asked him, tempting him:

and one of them, a lawyer, put a question to try him:

Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.

And the Pharisees being gathered together, Jesus asked them,

Congregatis autem pharisæis, interrogavit eos Jesus,

Saying: What think you of Christ? Whose son is he? They say to him: David’s.

What is your opinion concerning Christ? Whose son is he to be? They told him, David’s.

dicens: Quid vobis videtur de Christo? cujus filius est? Dicunt ei: David.

He saith to them: How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying:

How is it then, said he, that David is moved by the Spirit to call him Master, when he says:

Ait illis: Quomodo ergo David in spiritu vocat eum Dominum, dicens:

The Lord said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, until I make thy enemies thy footstool?

The Lord said to my Master, Sit on my right hand while I make thy enemies a footstool under thy feet?

Dixit Dominus Domino meo: Sede a dextris meis, donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum?

If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?

David calls Christ his Master; how can he be also his son?

Si ergo David vocat eum Dominum, quomodo filius ejus est?

And no man was able to answer him a word; neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

None could find a word to say in answer to him, nor did anyone dare, after that day, to try him with further questions.

Et nemo poterat ei respondere verbum: neque ausus fuit quisquam ex illa die eum amplius interrogare.
