Et ascendens in naviculam, transfretavit, et venit in civitatem suam.

And entering into a boat, he passed over the water and came into his own city.

So he took ship across the sea, and came to his own city.

Et ecce offerebant ei paralyticum jacentem in lecto. Et videns Jesus fidem illorum, dixit paralytico: Confide fili, remittuntur tibi peccata tua.

And behold they brought to him one sick of the palsy lying in a bed. And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the man sick of the palsy: Be of good heart, son, thy sins are forgiven thee.

And now they brought before him a man who was palsied and bed-ridden; whereupon Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the palsied man, Son, take courage, thy sins are forgiven.

Et ecce quidam de scribis dixerunt intra se: Hic blasphemat.

And behold some of the scribes said within themselves: He blasphemeth.

And at this, some of the scribes said to themselves, He is talking blasphemously.

Et cum vidisset Jesus cogitationes eorum, dixit: Ut quid cogitatis mala in cordibus vestris?

And Jesus seeing their thoughts, said: Why do you think evil in your hearts?

Jesus read their minds, and said, Why do you cherish wicked thoughts in your hearts?

Quid est facilius dicere: Dimittuntur tibi peccata tua: an dicere: Surge, et ambula?

Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee: or to say, Arise, and walk?

Tell me, which command is more lightly given, to say to a man, Thy sins are forgiven, or to say, Rise up, and walk?

Ut autem sciatis, quia Filius hominis habet potestatem in terra dimittendi peccata, tunc ait paralytico: Surge, tolle lectum tuum, et vade in domum tuam.

But that you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then said he to the man sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thy house.

And now, to convince you that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins while he is on earth (here he spoke to the palsied man), Rise up, take thy bed with thee, and go home.

Et surrexit, et abiit in domum suam.

And he arose, and went into his house.

And he rose up, and went back to his house,

Videntes autem turbæ timuerunt, et glorificaverunt Deum, qui dedit potestatem talem hominibus.

And the multitude seeing it, feared, and glorified God that gave such power to men.

so that the multitudes were filled with awe at seeing it, and praised God for giving such powers to men.

Et, cum transiret inde Jesus, vidit hominem sedentem in telonio, Matthæum nomine. Et ait illi: Sequere me. Et surgens, secutus est eum.

And when Jesus passed on from thence, he saw a man sitting in the custom house, named Matthew; and he saith to him: Follow me. And he arose up and followed him.

As he passed further on his way, Jesus saw a man called Matthew sitting at work in the customs-house, and said to him, Follow me; and Matthew rose from his place and followed him.

Et factum est, discumbente eo in domo, ecce multi publicani et peccatores venientes, discumbebant cum Jesu, et discipulis ejus.

And it came to pass as he was sitting at meat in the house, behold many publicans and sinners came, and sat down with Jesus and his disciples.

And afterwards, when he was taking a meal in the house, many publicans and sinners were to be found at table with him and his disciples.

Et videntes pharisæi, dicebant discipulis ejus: Quare cum publicanis et peccatoribus manducat magister vester?

And the Pharisees seeing it, said to his disciples: Why doth your master eat with publicans and sinners?

The Pharisees saw this, and asked his disciples, How comes it that your master eats with publicans and sinners?

At Jesus audiens, ait: Non est opus valentibus medicus, sed male habentibus.
12
But Jesus hearing it, said: They that are in health need not a physician, but they that are ill.

Jesus heard it, and said, It is not those who are in health that have need of the physician, it is those who are sick.

Euntes autem discite quid est: Misericordiam volo, et non sacrificium. Non enim veni vocare justos, sed peccatores.

Go then and learn what this meaneth, I will have mercy and not sacrifice. For I am not come to call the just, but sinners.

Go home and find out what the words mean, It is mercy that wins favour with me, not sacrifice. I have come to call sinners, not the just.

Tunc accesserunt ad eum discipuli Joannis, dicentes: Quare nos, et pharisæi, jejunamus frequenter: discipuli autem tui non jejunant?

Then came to him the disciples of John, saying: Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but thy disciples do not fast?

Then John’s disciples came to him, and asked, How is it that thy disciples do not fast, when we and the Pharisees fast so often?

Et ait illis Jesus: Numquid possunt filii sponsi lugere, quamdiu cum illis est sponsus? Venient autem dies cum auferetur ab eis sponsus: et tunc jejunabunt.

And Jesus said to them: Can the children of the bridegroom mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then they shall fast.

To them Jesus said, Can you expect the men of the bridegroom’s company to go mourning, while the bridegroom is still with them? No, the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them; then they will fast.

Nemo autem immittit commissuram panni rudis in vestimentum vetus: tollit enim plenitudinem ejus a vestimento, et pejor scissura fit.

And nobody putteth a piece of raw cloth unto an old garment. For it taketh away the fulness thereof from the garment, and there is made a greater rent.

Nobody uses a piece of new cloth to patch an old cloak; that would take away from the cloak all its pattern, and make the rent in it worse than before.

Neque mittunt vinum novum in utres veteres: alioquin rumpuntur utres, et vinum effunditur, et utres pereunt. Sed vinum novum in utres novos mittunt: et ambo conservantur.

Neither do they put new wine into old bottles. Otherwise the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish. But new wine they put into new bottles: and both are preserved.

Nor is new wine put into old wine-skins; if that is done, the skins burst, and there is the wine spilt and the skins spoiled. If the wine is new, it is put into fresh wine-skins, and so both are kept safe.

Hæc illo loquente ad eos, ecce princeps unus accessit, et adorabat eum, dicens: Domine, filia mea modo defuncta est: sed veni, impone manum tuam super eam, et vivet.

As he was speaking these things unto them, behold a certain ruler came up, and adored him, saying: Lord, my daughter is even now dead; but come, lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.

While he thus spoke to them, it chanced that one of the rulers came and knelt before him, and said, Lord, my daughter is this moment dead; come now and lay thy hand on her, and she will live.

Et surgens Jesus, sequebatur eum, et discipuli ejus.

And Jesus rising up followed him, with his disciples.
19
So Jesus rose up and went after him, and so did his disciples.

Et ecce mulier, quæ sanguinis fluxum patiebatur duodecim annis, accessit retro, et tetigit fimbriam vestimenti ejus.

And behold a woman who was troubled with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment.

And now a woman who for twelve years had been troubled with an issue of blood, came up behind him and touched the hem of his cloak;
21
Dicebat enim intra se: Si tetigero tantum vestimentum ejus, salva ero.
21
For she said within herself: If I shall touch only his garment, I shall be healed.
21
she said to herself, If I can even touch the hem of his cloak, I shall be healed.

At Jesus conversus, et videns eam, dixit: Confide, filia, fides tua te salvam fecit. Et salva facta est mulier ex illa hora.

But Jesus turning and seeing her, said: Be of good heart, daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

Jesus turned and caught sight of her; and he said, Have no fear, my daughter, thy faith has brought thee healing. And the woman recovered her health from that hour.

Et cum venisset Jesus in domum principis, et vidisset tibicines et turbam tumultuantem, dicebat:

And when Jesus was come into the house of the ruler, and saw the minstrels and the multitude making a rout,

So Jesus came into the ruler’s house, where he found mourners playing the flute, and the multitude thronging noisily;
24
Recedite: non est enim mortua puella, sed dormit. Et deridebant eum.
24
He said: Give place, for the girl is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.
24
and he said, Make room there; the child is not dead, she is asleep; and they laughed aloud at him.
25
Et cum ejecta esset turba, intravit: et tenuit manum ejus, et surrexit puella.
25
And when the multitude was put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand. And the maid arose.
25
But when the multitude had been turned away, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she rose up.

Et exiit fama hæc in universam terram illam.
26
And the fame hereof went abroad into all that country.
26
And the story of these doings spread abroad through all the country round.

Et transeunte inde Jesu, secuti sunt eum duo cæci, clamantes, et dicentes: Miserere nostri, fili David.

And as Jesus passed from thence there followed him two blind men crying out and saying, Have mercy on us, O Son of David.
27
As Jesus was passing further on his way, he was followed by two blind men, who cried aloud, Son of David, have pity on us.

Cum autem venisset domum, accesserunt ad eum cæci. Et dicit eis Jesus: Creditis quia hoc possum facere vobis? Dicunt ei: Utique, Domine.

And when he was come to the house, the blind men came to him. And Jesus saith to them, Do you believe, that I can do this unto you? They say to him, Yea, Lord.

These blind men came to him when he had gone into his lodging, and Jesus said to them, Have you the faith to believe that I can do this? And they said to him, Yes, Lord.

Tunc tetigit oculos eorum, dicens: Secundum fidem vestram, fiat vobis.
29
Then he touched their eyes, saying, According to your faith, be it done unto you.

Thereupon, he touched their eyes, and said, Your faith shall not be disappointed.

Et aperti sunt oculi eorum: et comminatus est illis Jesus, dicens: Videte ne quis sciat.

And their eyes were opened, and Jesus strictly charged them, saying, See that no man know this.

Then their eyes were opened; and Jesus laid a strict charge on them, telling them, Be sure nobody hears of this.

Illi autem exeuntes, diffamaverunt eum in tota terra illa.

But they going out, spread his fame abroad in all that country.
31
But they had no sooner gone out than they talked of him in all the country round.

Egressis autem illis, ecce obtulerunt ei hominem mutum, dæmonium habentem.

And when they were gone out, behold they brought him a dumb man, possessed with a devil.

And it chanced that, as they were going, a dumb man was brought to him, possessed with a devil.

Et ejecto dæmonio, locutus est mutus, et miratæ sunt turbæ, dicentes: Numquam apparuit sic in Israël.

And after the devil was cast out, the dumb man spoke, and the multitudes wondered, saying, Never was the like seen in Israel.

The devil was cast out, and the dumb man found speech; at which the multitudes were filled with amazement; Nothing like this, they said, was ever seen in Israel.

Pharisæi autem dicebant: In principe dæmoniorum ejicit dæmones.
34
But the Pharisees said, By the prince of devils he casteth out devils.
34
But the Pharisees said, It is the prince of the devils that enables him to cast the devils out.
35
Et circuibat Jesus omnes civitates, et castella, docens in synagogis eorum, et prædicans Evangelium regni, et curans omnem languorem, et omnem infirmitatem.

And Jesus went about all the cities, and towns, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease, and every infirmity.

So Jesus went about all their cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every kind of disease and infirmity.

Videns autem turbas, misertus est eis: quia erant vexati, et jacentes sicut oves non habentes pastorem.

And seeing the multitudes, he had compassion on them: because they were distressed, and lying like sheep that have no shepherd.

Yet still, when he looked at the multitudes, he was moved with pity for them, seeing them harried and abject, like sheep that have no shepherd.

Tunc dicit discipulis suis: Messis quidem multa, operarii autem pauci.
37
Then he saith to his disciples, The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few.
37
Thereupon he said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful enough, but the labourers are few;
38
Rogate ergo Dominum messis, ut mittat operarios in messem suam.
38
Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he send forth labourers into his harvest.
38
you must ask the Lord to whom the harvest belongs to send labourers out for the harvesting.
