In illa hora accesserunt discipuli ad Jesum, dicentes: Quis, putas, major est in regno cælorum?

At that hour the disciples came to Jesus, saying: Who thinkest thou is the greater in the kingdom of heaven?

The disciples came to Jesus at this time and said, Tell us, who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
2
Et advocans Jesus parvulum, statuit eum in medio eorum,
2
And Jesus calling unto him a little child, set him in the midst of them,
2
Whereupon Jesus called to his side a little child, to whom he gave a place in the midst of them,
3
et dixit: Amen dico vobis, nisi conversi fueritis, et efficiamini sicut parvuli, non intrabitis in regnum cælorum.

And said: Amen I say to you, unless you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

and said, Believe me, unless you become like little children again, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Quicumque ergo humiliaverit se sicut parvulus iste, hic est major in regno cælorum.
4
Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, he is the greater in the kingdom of heaven.
4
He is greatest in the kingdom of heaven who will abase himself like this little child.

Et qui susceperit unum parvulum talem in nomine meo, me suscipit:
5
And he that shall receive one such little child in my name, receiveth me.
5
He who gives welcome to such a child as this in my name, gives welcome to me.

qui autem scandalizaverit unum de pusillis istis, qui in me credunt, expedit ei ut suspendatur mola asinaria in collo ejus, et demergatur in profundum maris.

But he that shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be drowned in the depth of the sea.

And if anyone hurts the conscience of one of these little ones, that believe in me, he had better have been drowned in the depths of the sea, with a mill-stone hung about his neck.

Væ mundo a scandalis! Necesse est enim ut veniant scandala: verumtamen væ homini illi, per quem scandalum venit.
7
Woe to the world because of scandals. For it must needs be that scandals come: but nevertheless woe to that man by whom the scandal cometh.

Woe to the world, for the hurt done to consciences! It must needs be that such hurt should come, but woe to the man through whom it comes!

Si autem manus tua, vel pes tuus scandalizat te, abscide eum, et projice abs te: bonum tibi est ad vitam ingredi debilem, vel claudum, quam duas manus vel duos pedes habentem mitti in ignem æternum.

And if thy hand, or thy foot scandalize thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee. It is better for thee to go into life maimed or lame, than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into everlasting fire.

If thy hand or thy foot is an occasion of falling to thee, cut it off and cast it away from thee; better for thee to enter into life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet when thou art cast into eternal fire.

Et si oculus tuus scandalizat te, erue eum, et projice abs te: bonum tibi est cum uno oculo in vitam intrare, quam duos oculos habentem mitti in gehennam ignis.

And if thy eye scandalize thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee. It is better for thee having one eye to enter into life, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

And if thy eye is an occasion of falling to thee, pluck it out and cast it away from thee; better for thee to enter into life with one eye, than to have two eyes when thou art cast into the fires of hell.

Videte ne contemnatis unum ex his pusillis: dico enim vobis, quia angeli eorum in cælis semper vident faciem Patris mei, qui in cælis est.

See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.

See to it that you do not treat one of these little ones with contempt; I tell you, they have angels of their own in heaven, that behold the face of my heavenly Father continually.

Venit enim Filius hominis salvare quod perierat.

For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

The Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.

Quid vobis videtur? si fuerint alicui centum oves, et erravit una ex eis: nonne relinquit nonaginta novem in montibus, et vadit quærere eam quæ erravit?

What think you? If a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them should go astray: doth he not leave the ninety-nine in the mountains, and go to seek that which is gone astray?

Tell me this, if a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave those ninety-nine others on the mountain-side, and go out to look for the one that is straying?

Et si contigerit ut inveniat eam: amen dico vobis, quia gaudet super eam magis quam super nonaginta novem, quæ non erraverunt.

And if it so be that he find it: Amen I say to you, he rejoiceth more for that, than for the ninety-nine that went not astray.

And if, by good fortune, he finds it, he rejoices more, believe me, over that one, than over the ninety-nine which never strayed from him.
14
Sic non est voluntas ante Patrem vestrum, qui in cælis est, ut pereat unus de pusillis istis.
14
Even so it is not the will of your Father, who is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.
14
So too it is not your heavenly Father’s pleasure that one of these little ones should be lost.
15
Si autem peccaverit in te frater tuus, vade, et corripe eum inter te, et ipsum solum: si te audierit, lucratus eris fratrem tuum.
15
But if thy brother shall offend against thee, go, and rebuke him between thee and him alone. If he shall hear thee, thou shalt gain thy brother.
15
If thy brother does thee wrong, go at once and tax him with it, as a private matter between thee and him; and so, if he will listen to thee, thou hast won thy brother.
16
Si autem te non audierit, adhibe tecum adhuc unum, vel duos, ut in ore duorum, vel trium testium stet omne verbum.
16
And if he will not hear thee, take with thee one or two more: that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may stand.

If he will not listen to thee, take with thee one or two more, that the whole matter may be certified by the voice of two or three witnesses.
17
Quod si non audierit eos: dic ecclesiæ. Si autem ecclesiam non audierit, sit tibi sicut ethnicus et publicanus.

And if he will not hear them: tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican.

If he will not listen to them, then speak of it to the church; and if he will not even listen to the church, then count him all one with the heathen and the publican.

Amen dico vobis, quæcumque alligaveritis super terram, erunt ligata et in cælo: et quæcumque solveritis super terram, erunt soluta et in cælo.

Amen I say to you, whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, shall be bound also in heaven; and whatsoever you shall loose upon earth, shall be loosed also in heaven.

I promise you, all that you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and all that you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
19
Iterum dico vobis, quia si duo ex vobis consenserint super terram, de omni re quamcumque petierint, fiet illis a Patre meo, qui in cælis est.

Again I say to you, that if two of you shall consent upon earth, concerning any thing whatsoever they shall ask, it shall be done to them by my Father who is in heaven.

And moreover I tell you, that if two of you agree over any request that you make on earth, it will be granted them by my Father who is in heaven.

Ubi enim sunt duo vel tres congregati in nomine meo, ibi sum in medio eorum.
20
For where there are two or three gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
20
Where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there in the midst of them.

Tunc accedens Petrus ad eum, dixit: Domine, quoties peccabit in me frater meus, et dimittam ei? usque septies?

Then came Peter unto him and said: Lord, how often shall my brother offend against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

Then Peter came to him and asked, Lord, how often must I see my brother do me wrong, and still forgive him; as much as seven times?
22
Dicit illi Jesus: Non dico tibi usque septies: sed usque septuagies septies.
22
Jesus saith to him: I say not to thee, till seven times; but till seventy times seven times.
22
Jesus said to him, I tell thee to forgive, not seven wrongs, but seventy times seven.

Ideo assimilatum est regnum cælorum homini regi, qui voluit rationem ponere cum servis suis.

Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened to a king, who would take an account of his servants.

Here is an image of the kingdom of heaven; there was a king who resolved to enter into a reckoning with his servants,
24
Et cum cœpisset rationem ponere, oblatus est ei unus, qui debebat ei decem millia talenta.
24
And when he had begun to take the account, one was brought to him, that owed him ten thousand talents.
24
and had scarcely begun the reckoning, when one was brought before him who was ten thousand talents in his debt.
25
Cum autem non haberet unde redderet, jussit eum dominus ejus venundari, et uxorem ejus, et filios, et omnia quæ habebat, et reddi.
25
And as he had not wherewith to pay it, his lord commanded that he should be sold, and his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.
25
He had no means of making payment; whereupon his master gave orders that he should be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and so the debt should be paid.

Procidens autem servus ille, orabat eum, dicens: Patientiam habe in me, et omnia reddam tibi.
26
But that servant falling down, besought him, saying: Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
26
With that the servant fell at his feet and said, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee in full.
27
Misertus autem dominus servi illius, dimisit eum, et debitum dimisit ei.
27
And the lord of that servant being moved with pity, let him go and forgave him the debt.
27
And his master, moved with pity for him, let the servant go and discharged him of his debt.
28
Egressus autem servus ille invenit unum de conservis suis, qui debebat ei centum denarios: et tenens suffocavit eum, dicens: Redde quod debes.
28
But when that servant was gone out, he found one of his fellow servants that owed him an hundred pence: and laying hold of him, he throttled him, saying: Pay what thou owest.

So the servant went out, and met with a fellow servant of his, who owed him a hundred pieces of silver; whereupon he caught hold of him and took him by the throat, and said, Pay me all thou owest me.

Et procidens conservus ejus, rogabat eum, dicens: Patientiam habe in me, et omnia reddam tibi.
29
And his fellow servant falling down, besought him, saying: Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
29
His fellow servant went down on his knees in entreaty; Have patience with me, he said, and I will pay thee in full.
30
Ille autem noluit: sed abiit, et misit eum in carcerem donec redderet debitum.
30
And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he paid the debt.
30
But the other refused; he went away and committed him to prison for such time as the debt was unpaid.
31
Videntes autem conservi ejus quæ fiebant, contristati sunt valde: et venerunt, et narraverunt domino suo omnia quæ facta fuerant.

Now his fellow servants seeing what was done, were very much grieved, and they came and told their lord all that was done.

The rest of the servants were full of indignation when they saw this done, and went in to tell their master what had happened.
32
Tunc vocavit illum dominus suus: et ait illi: Serve nequam, omne debitum dimisi tibi quoniam rogasti me:

Then his lord called him; and said to him: Thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all the debt, because thou besoughtest me:
32
And so he was summoned by his master, who said to him, I remitted all that debt of thine, thou wicked servant, at thy entreaty;
33
nonne ergo oportuit et te misereri conservi tui, sicut et ego tui misertus sum?
33
Shouldst not thou then have had compassion also on thy fellow servant, even as I had compassion on thee?
33
was it not thy duty to have mercy on thy fellow servant, as I had mercy on thee?
34
Et iratus dominus ejus tradidit eum tortoribus, quoadusque redderet universum debitum.
34
And his lord being angry, delivered him to the torturers until he paid all the debt.
34
And his master, in anger, gave him over to be tortured until the debt was paid.
35
Sic et Pater meus cælestis faciet vobis, si non remiseritis unusquisque fratri suo de cordibus vestris.
35
So also shall my heavenly Father do to you, if you forgive not every one his brother from your hearts.
35
It is thus that my heavenly Father will deal with you, if brother does not forgive brother with all his heart.
