At that time Herod the Tetrarch heard the fame of Jesus.

In illo tempore audivit Herodes tetrarcha famam Jesu:

At this time Herod, who ruled in that quarter, heard what was told of Jesus.

And he said to his servants: This is John the Baptist: he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him.

et ait pueris suis: Hic est Joannes Baptista: ipse surrexit a mortuis, et ideo virtutes operantur in eo.

And he said to his men, This is no other than John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead, and that is why these powers are active in him.

For Herod had apprehended John and bound him, and put him into prison, because of Herodias, his brother’s wife.

Herodes enim tenuit Joannem, et alligavit eum: et posuit in carcerem propter Herodiadem uxorem fratris sui.

For Herod himself had arrested John and put him in chains and thrown him into prison, for love of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,

For John said to him: It is not lawful for thee to have her.

Dicebat enim illi Joannes: Non licet tibi habere eam.

because John told him, It is wrong for thee to take her.

And having a mind to put him to death, he feared the people: because they esteemed him as a prophet.

Et volens illum occidere, timuit populum: quia sicut prophetam eum habebant.

And he would willingly have put him to death, but was prevented by fear of the multitude, who looked upon John as a prophet.

But on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them: and pleased Herod.

Die autem natalis Herodis saltavit filia Herodiadis in medio, et placuit Herodi:

Then, at the celebration of Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them all, and Herod was so well pleased with her

Whereupon he promised with an oath, to give her whatsoever she would ask of him.

unde cum juramento pollicitus est ei dare quodcumque postulasset ab eo.

that he promised, on oath, to grant her whatever request she made.

But she being instructed before by her mother, said: Give me here in a dish the head of John the Baptist.

At illa præmonita a matre sua: Da mihi, inquit, hic in disco caput Joannis Baptistæ.

She had been prompted beforehand by her mother; Give me, she said, the head of John the Baptist; give it me here on a dish.

And the king was struck sad: yet because of his oath, and for them that sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given.

Et contristatus est rex: propter juramentum autem, et eos qui pariter recumbebant, jussit dari.

And the king was stricken with remorse; but, out of respect for his oath and for those who sat with him at table, he granted her request,

And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

Misitque et decollavit Joannem in carcere.

and so had John beheaded in his prison.

And his head was brought in a dish: and it was given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother.

Et allatum est caput ejus in disco, et datum est puellæ, et attulit matri suæ.

His head was brought in on a dish, and given to the girl, and she carried it off to her mother.

And his disciples came and took the body, and buried it, and came and told Jesus.

Et accedentes discipuli ejus, tulerunt corpus ejus, et sepelierunt illud: et venientes nuntiaverunt Jesu.

But his disciples gained access to the body, which they took away and buried, and came to tell the news to Jesus.

Which when Jesus had heard, he retired from thence by a boat, into a desert place apart, and the multitudes having heard of it, followed him on foot out of the cities.

Quod cum audisset Jesus, secessit inde in navicula, in locum desertum seorsum: et cum audissent turbæ, secutæ sunt eum pedestres de civitatibus.

Jesus, when he had heard it, took ship from the place where he was, and withdrew into desert country, to be alone; but the multitudes from the towns heard of it, and followed him there by land.

And he coming forth saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

Et exiens vidit turbam multam, et misertus est eis, et curavit languidos eorum.

So, when he disembarked, he found a great multitude there, and he took pity on them, and healed those who were sick.

And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying: This is a desert place, and the hour is now past: send away the multitudes, that going into the towns, they may buy themselves victuals.

Vespere autem facto, accesserunt ad eum discipuli ejus, dicentes: Desertus est locus, et hora jam præteriit: dimitte turbas, ut euntes in castella, emant sibi escas.

And now it was evening, and his disciples came to him and said, This is a lonely place, and it is past the accustomed hour; give the multitudes leave to go into the villages and buy themselves food there.

But Jesus said to them, They have no need to go: give you them to eat.

Jesus autem dixit eis: Non habent necesse ire: date illis vos manducare.

But Jesus told them, There is no need for them to go away; it is for you to give them food to eat.

They answered him: We have not here, but five loaves, and two fishes.

Responderunt ei: Non habemus hic nisi quinque panes et duos pisces.

They answered, We have nothing with us, except five loaves and two fishes.

He said to them: Bring them hither to me.

Qui ait eis: Afferte mihi illos huc.

Bring them to me here, he said;

And when he had commanded the multitude to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.

Et cum jussisset turbam discumbere super fœnum, acceptis quinque panibus et duobus piscibus, aspiciens in cælum benedixit, et fregit, et dedit discipulis panes, discipuli autem turbis.

then he told the multitudes to sit down on the grass, and when the five loaves and the two fishes were brought to him he looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples; and the disciples gave them to the multitude.

And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up what remained, twelve full baskets of fragments.

Et manducaverunt omnes, et saturati sunt. Et tulerunt reliquias, duodecim cophinos fragmentorum plenos.

All ate and had enough, and when they picked up what was left of the broken pieces they filled twelve baskets with them;

And the number of them that did eat, was five thousand men, besides women and children.

Manducantium autem fuit numerus quinque millia virorum, exceptis mulieribus et parvulis.

about five thousand men had eaten, not reckoning women and children.

And forthwith Jesus obliged his disciples to go up into the boat, and to go before him over the water, till he dismissed the people.

Et statim compulit Jesus discipulos ascendere in naviculam, et præcedere eum trans fretum, donec dimitteret turbas.

As soon as this was done, he prevailed upon his disciples to take ship and cross to the other side before him, leaving him to send the multitudes home.

And having dismissed the multitude, he went into a mountain alone to pray. And when it was evening, he was there alone.

Et dimissa turba, ascendit in montem solus orare. Vespere autem facto solus erat ibi:

When he had finished sending them home, he went up by himself on to the hill-side, to pray there; twilight had come, and he remained there alone.

But the boat in the midst of the sea was tossed with the waves: for the wind was contrary.

navicula autem in medio mari jactabatur fluctibus: erat enim contrarius ventus.

Meanwhile the ship was already half-way across the sea, hard put to it by the waves, for the wind was against them.

And in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them walking upon the sea.

Quarta enim vigilia noctis, venit ad eos ambulans super mare.

And then, when the night had reached its fourth quarter, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.

And they seeing him walking upon the sea, were troubled, saying: It is an apparition. And they cried out for fear.

Et videntes eum super mare ambulantem, turbati sunt, dicentes: Quia phantasma est. Et præ timore clamaverunt.

When they saw him walking on the sea, the disciples were terrified; they said, It is an apparition, and cried out for fear.

And immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying: Be of good heart: it is I, fear ye not.

Statimque Jesus locutus est eis, dicens: Habete fiduciam: ego sum, nolite timere.

But all at once Jesus spoke to them; Take courage, he said, it is myself; do not be afraid.

And Peter making answer, said: Lord, if it be thou, bid me come to thee upon the waters.

Respondens autem Petrus, dixit: Domine, si tu es, jube me ad te venire super aquas.

And Peter answered him, Lord, if it is thyself, bid me come to thee over the water.

And he said: Come. And Peter going down out of the boat, walked upon the water to come to Jesus.

At ipse ait: Veni. Et descendens Petrus de navicula, ambulabat super aquam ut veniret ad Jesum.

He said, Come; and Peter let himself down out of the ship and walked over the water to reach Jesus.

But seeing the wind strong, he was afraid: and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying: Lord, save me.

Videns vero ventum validum, timuit: et cum cœpisset mergi, clamavit dicens: Domine, salvum me fac.

Then, seeing how strong the wind was, he lost courage and began to sink; whereupon he cried aloud, Lord, save me.

And immediately Jesus stretching forth his hand took hold of him, and said to him: O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?

Et continuo Jesus extendens manum, apprehendit eum: et ait illi: Modicæ fidei, quare dubitasti?

And Jesus at once stretched out his hand and caught hold of him, saying to him, Why didst thou hesitate, man of little faith?

And when they were come up into the boat, the wind ceased.

Et cum ascendissent in naviculam, cessavit ventus.

So they went on board the ship, and thereupon the wind dropped.

And they that were in the boat came and adored him, saying: Indeed thou art the Son of God.

Qui autem in navicula erant, venerunt, et adoraverunt eum, dicentes: Vere Filius Dei es.

And the ship’s crew came and said, falling at his feet, Thou art indeed the Son of God.

And having passed the water, they came into the country of Genesar.

Et cum transfretassent, venerunt in terram Genesar.

When they had crossed, they reached the country of Genesar;

And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent into all that country, and brought to him all that were diseased.

Et cum cognovissent eum viri loci illius, miserunt in universam regionem illam, et obtulerunt ei omnes male habentes:

and the inhabitants of that place, recognizing him, sent into all the country round, and brought to him all those who were in affliction;

And they besought him that they might touch but the hem of his garment. And as many as touched, were made whole.

et rogabant eum ut vel fimbriam vestimenti ejus tangerent. Et quicumque tetigerunt, salvi facti sunt.

and they entreated him that they might be allowed to touch even the hem of his garments. And everyone who touched him was restored to health.
