Scitis quia post biduum Pascha fiet, et Filius hominis tradetur ut crucifigatur.

You know that after two days the paschal feast is coming; it is then that the Son of Man must be given up to be crucified.

You know that after two days shall be the pasch, and the Son of man shall be delivered up to be crucified:

Tunc congregati sunt principes sacerdotum, et seniores populi, in atrium principis sacerdotum, qui dicebatur Caiphas:

At this very time, the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the court of the high priest, whose name was Caiphas;

Then were gathered together the chief priests and ancients of the people into the court of the high priest, who was called Caiphas:

et consilium fecerunt ut Jesum dolo tenerent, et occiderent.

and there they plotted to bring Jesus into their power by cunning, and put him to death.

And they consulted together, that by subtilty they might apprehend Jesus, and put him to death.

Dicebant autem: Non in die festo, ne forte tumultus fieret in populo.

Yet they still said, Not on the day of the feast, or perhaps there will be an uproar among the people.

But they said: Not on the festival day, lest perhaps there should be a tumult among the people.

Cum autem Jesus esset in Bethania in domo Simonis leprosi,

But then, while Jesus was in the house of Simon the leper, at Bethany,

And when Jesus was in Bethania, in the house of Simon the leper,

accessit ad eum mulier habens alabastrum unguenti pretiosi, et effudit super caput ipsius recumbentis.

a woman came to him, with a pot of very precious ointment, and poured it over his head as he sat at table.

There came to him a woman having an alabaster box of precious ointment, and poured it on his head as he was at table.

Videntes autem discipuli, indignati sunt, dicentes: Ut quid perditio hæc?

The disciples were indignant when they saw it: What is the meaning of this waste? they asked.

And the disciples seeing it, had indignation, saying: To what purpose is this waste?

potuit enim istud venundari multo, et dari pauperibus.

It would have been possible to sell this at a great price, and give alms to the poor.

For this might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.

Sciens autem Jesus, ait illis: Quid molesti estis huic mulieri? opus enim bonum operata est in me.

This Jesus knew, and said to them, Why do you vex the woman? She did well to treat me so.

And Jesus knowing it, said to them: Why do you trouble this woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.

Nam semper pauperes habetis vobiscum: me autem non semper habetis.

You have the poor among you always; I am not always among you.

For the poor you have always with you: but me you have not always.

Mittens enim hæc unguentum hoc in corpus meum, ad sepeliendum me fecit.

When she poured this ointment over my body, she did it to prepare me for my burial;

For she in pouring this ointment upon my body, hath done it for my burial.

Amen dico vobis, ubicumque prædicatum fuerit hoc Evangelium in toto mundo, dicetur et quod hæc fecit in memoriam ejus.

and I promise you, in whatever part of the world this gospel is preached, the story of what she has done shall be told in its place, to preserve her memory.

Amen I say to you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which she hath done, shall be told for a memory of her.

Tunc abiit unus de duodecim, qui dicebatur Judas Iscariotes, ad principes sacerdotum:

And at that, one of the twelve, Judas who was called Iscariot, went to the chief priests

Then went one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, to the chief priests,

et ait illis: Quid vultis mihi dare, et ego vobis eum tradam? At illi constituerunt ei triginta argenteos.

and asked them, What will you pay me for handing him over to you? Whereupon they laid down thirty pieces of silver.

And said to them: What will you give me, and I will deliver him unto you? But they appointed him thirty pieces of silver.

Et exinde quærebat opportunitatem ut eum traderet.

And he, from that time onwards, looked about for an opportunity to betray him.

And from thenceforth he sought opportunity to betray him.

Prima autem die azymorum accesserunt discipuli ad Jesum, dicentes: Ubi vis paremus tibi comedere Pascha?

On the first of the days of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, Where wilt thou have us make ready for thee to eat the paschal meal?

And on the first day of the Azymes, the disciples came to Jesus, saying: Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the pasch?

At Jesus dixit: Ite in civitatem ad quemdam, et dicite ei: Magister dicit: Tempus meum prope est, apud te facio Pascha cum discipulis meis.

And Jesus said, Go into the city, find such a man, and tell him, The Master says, My time is near; I and my disciples must keep the paschal feast at thy house.

But Jesus said: Go ye into the city to a certain man, and say to him: The master saith, My time is near at hand, with thee I make the pasch with my disciples.

Et fecerunt discipuli sicut constituit illis Jesus, et paraverunt Pascha.

The disciples did as Jesus bade them, and made all ready for the paschal meal there.

And the disciples did as Jesus appointed to them, and they prepared the pasch.

Vespere autem facto, discumbebat cum duodecim discipulis suis.

When evening came, he sat down with his twelve disciples,

But when it was evening, he sat down with his twelve disciples.

Et edentibus illis, dixit: Amen dico vobis, quia unus vestrum me traditurus est.

and, while they were at table, he said, Believe me, one of you is to betray me.

And whilst they were eating, he said: Amen I say to you, that one of you is about to betray me.

Et contristati valde, cœperunt singuli dicere: Numquid ego sum Domine?

They were full of sorrow, and began to say, one after another, Lord, is it I?

And they being very much troubled, began every one to say: Is it I, Lord?

At ipse respondens, ait: Qui intingit mecum manum in paropside, hic me tradet.

He answered, The man who has put his hand into the dish with me will betray me.

But he answering, said: He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, he shall betray me.

Filius quidem hominis vadit, sicut scriptum est de illo: væ autem homini illi, per quem Filius hominis tradetur! bonum erat ei, si natus non fuisset homo ille.

The Son of Man goes on his way, as the scripture foretells of him; but woe upon that man by whom the Son of Man is to be betrayed; better for that man if he had never been born.

The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man shall be betrayed: it were better for him, if that man had not been born.

Respondens autem Judas, qui tradidit eum, dixit: Numquid ego sum Rabbi? Ait illi: Tu dixisti.

Then Judas, he who was betraying him, said openly, Master, is it I? Jesus answered, Thy own lips have said it.

And Judas that betrayed him, answering, said: Is it I, Rabbi? He saith to him: Thou hast said it.

Cœnantibus autem eis, accepit Jesus panem, et benedixit, ac fregit, deditque discipulis suis, et ait: Accipite, et comedite: hoc est corpus meum.

And while they were still at table, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my body.

And whilst they were at supper, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke: and gave to his disciples, and said: Take ye, and eat. This is my body.

Et accipiens calicem, gratias egit: et dedit illis, dicens: Bibite ex hoc omnes.

Then he took a cup, and offered thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink, all of you, of this;

And taking the chalice, he gave thanks, and gave to them, saying: Drink ye all of this.

Hic est enim sanguis meus novi testamenti, qui pro multis effundetur in remissionem peccatorum.

for this is my blood, of the new testament, shed for many, to the remission of sins.

For this is my blood of the new testament, which shall be shed for many unto remission of sins.

Dico autem vobis: non bibam amodo de hoc genimine vitis usque in diem illum, cum illud bibam vobiscum novum in regno Patris mei.

And I tell you this, I shall not drink of this fruit of the vine again, until I drink it with you, new wine, in the kingdom of my Father.

And I say to you, I will not drink from henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I shall drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father.

Et hymno dicto, exierunt in montem Oliveti.

And so they sang a hymn, and went out to mount Olivet.

And a hymn being said, they went out unto mount Olivet.

Tunc dicit illis Jesus: Omnes vos scandalum patiemini in me in ista nocte. Scriptum est enim: Percutiam pastorem, et dispergentur oves gregis.

After this, Jesus said to them, To-night you will all lose courage over me; for so it has been written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of his flock will be scattered.

Then Jesus saith to them: All you shall be scandalized in me this night. For it is written: I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be dispersed.

Postquam autem resurrexero, præcedam vos in Galilæam.

But I will go on before you into Galilee, when I have risen from the dead.

But after I shall be risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.

Respondens autem Petrus, ait illi: Et si omnes scandalizati fuerint in te, ego numquam scandalizabor.

Peter answered him, Though all else should lose courage over thee, I will never lose mine.

And Peter answering, said to him: Although all shall be scandalized in thee, I will never be scandalized.

Ait illi Jesus: Amen dico tibi, quia in hac nocte, antequam gallus cantet, ter me negabis.

Jesus said to him, Believe me, this night, before the cock crows, thou wilt thrice disown me.

Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee, that in this night before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice.

Ait illi Petrus: Etiamsi oportuerit me mori tecum, non te negabo. Similiter et omnes discipuli dixerunt.

Peter said to him, I will never disown thee, though I must lay down my life with thee. And all the rest of his disciples said the like.

Peter saith to him: Yea, though I should die with thee, I will not deny thee. And in like manner said all the disciples.

Tunc venit Jesus cum illis in villam, quæ dicitur Gethsemani, et dixit discipulis suis: Sedete hic donec vadam illuc, et orem.

So Jesus came, and they with him, to a plot of land called Gethsemani; and he said to his disciples, Sit down here, while I go in there and pray.

Then Jesus came with them into a country place which is called Gethsemani; and he said to his disciples: Sit you here, till I go yonder and pray.

Et assumpto Petro, et duobus filiis Zebedæi, cœpit contristari et mœstus esse.

But he took Peter and the sons of Zebedee with him. And now he grew sorrowful and dismayed;

And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to grow sorrowful and to be sad.

Tunc ait illis: Tristis est anima mea usque ad mortem: sustinete hic, et vigilate mecum.

My soul, he said, is ready to die with sorrow; do you abide here, and watch with me.

Then he saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death: stay you here, and watch with me.

Et progressus pusillum, procidit in faciem suam, orans, et dicens: Pater mi, si possibile est, transeat a me calix iste: verumtamen non sicut ego volo, sed sicut tu.

When he had gone a little further, he fell upon his face in prayer, and said, My Father, if it is possible, let this chalice pass me by; only as thy will is, not as mine is.

And going a little further, he fell upon his face, praying, and saying: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

Et venit ad discipulos suos, et invenit eos dormientes, et dicit Petro: Sic non potuistis una hora vigilare mecum?

Then he went back to his disciples, to find them asleep; and he said to Peter, Had you no strength, then, to watch with me even for an hour?

And he cometh to his disciples, and findeth them asleep, and he saith to Peter: What? Could you not watch one hour with me?

Vigilate, et orate ut non intretis in tentationem. Spiritus quidem promptus est, caro autem infirma.

Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing enough, but the flesh is weak.

Watch ye, and pray that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak.

Iterum secundo abiit, et oravit, dicens: Pater mi, si non potest hic calix transire nisi bibam illum, fiat voluntas tua.

Then he went back again, and prayed a second time; and his prayer was, My Father, if this chalice may not pass me by, but I must drink it, then thy will be done.

Again the second time, he went and prayed, saying: My Father, if this chalice may not pass away, but I must drink it, thy will be done.

Et venit iterum, et invenit eos dormientes: erant enim oculi eorum gravati.

And once more he found his disciples asleep when he came to them, so heavy their eyelids were;

And he cometh again, and findeth them sleeping: for their eyes were heavy.

Et relictis illis, iterum abiit, et oravit tertio, eumdem sermonem dicens.

this time he went away without disturbing them, and made his third prayer, using the same words.

And leaving them, he went again: and he prayed the third time, saying the selfsame word.

Tunc venit ad discipulos suos, et dicit illis: Dormite jam, et requiescite: ecce appropinquavit hora, et Filius hominis tradetur in manus peccatorum.

After that he returned to his disciples, and said to them, Sleep and take your rest hereafter; as I speak, the time draws near when the Son of Man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Then he cometh to his disciples, and said to them: Sleep ye now and take your rest; behold the hour is at hand, and the Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Surgite, eamus: ecce appropinquavit qui me tradet.

Rise up, let us go on our way; already, he that is to betray me is close at hand.

Rise, let us go: behold he is at hand that will betray me.

Adhuc eo loquente, ecce Judas unus de duodecim venit, et cum eo turba multa cum gladiis et fustibus, missi a principibus sacerdotum, et senioribus populi.

And all at once, while he was speaking, Judas, who was one of the twelve, came near; with him was a great multitude carrying swords and clubs, who had been sent by the chief priests and the elders of the people.

As he yet spoke, behold Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the ancients of the people.

Qui autem tradidit eum, dedit illis signum, dicens: Quemcumque osculatus fuero, ipse est, tenete eum.

The traitor had appointed them a signal; It is none other, he told them, than the man whom I shall greet with a kiss; hold him fast.

And he that betrayed him, gave them a sign, saying: Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is he, hold him fast.

Et confestim accedens ad Jesum, dixit: Ave Rabbi. Et osculatus est eum.

No sooner, then, had he come near to Jesus than he said, Hail, Master, and kissed him.

And forthwith coming to Jesus, he said: Hail, Rabbi. And he kissed him.

Dixitque illi Jesus: Amice, ad quid venisti? Tunc accesserunt, et manus injecerunt in Jesum, et tenuerunt eum.

Jesus said to him, My friend, on what errand hast thou come? Then they came forward and laid their hands on Jesus, and held him fast.

And Jesus said to him: Friend, whereto art thou come? Then they came up, and laid hands on Jesus, and held him.

Et ecce unus ex his qui erant cum Jesu, extendens manum, exemit gladium suum, et percutiens servum principis sacerdotum amputavit auriculam ejus.

And at that, one of those who were with Jesus lifted a hand to draw his sword, and smote one of the high priest’s servants with it, cutting off his ear.

And behold one of them that were with Jesus, stretching forth his hand, drew out his sword: and striking the servant of the high priest, cut off his ear.

Tunc ait illi Jesus: Converte gladium tuum in locum suum: omnes enim, qui acceperint gladium, gladio peribunt.

Whereupon Jesus said to him, Put thy sword back into its place; all those who take up the sword will perish by the sword.

Then Jesus saith to him: Put up again thy sword into its place: for all that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

An putas, quia non possum rogare patrem meum, et exhibebit mihi modo plusquam duodecim legiones angelorum?

Dost thou doubt that if I call upon my Father, even now, he will send more than twelve legions of angels to my side?

Thinkest thou that I cannot ask my Father, and he will give me presently more than twelve legions of angels?

Quomodo ergo implebuntur Scripturæ, quia sic oportet fieri?

But how, were it so, should the scriptures be fulfilled, which have prophesied that all must be as it is?

How then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that so it must be done?

In illa hora dixit Jesus turbis: Tamquam ad latronem existis cum gladiis et fustibus comprehendere me: quotidie apud vos sedebam docens in templo, et non me tenuistis.

And Jesus said to the multitude at that hour, You have come out to my arrest with swords and clubs, as if I were a robber; and yet I used to sit teaching in the temple close to you, day after day, and you never laid hands on me.

In that same hour Jesus said to the multitudes: You are come out as it were to a robber with swords and clubs to apprehend me. I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you laid not hands on me.

Hoc autem totum factum est, ut adimplerentur Scripturæ prophetarum. Tunc discipuli omnes, relicto eo, fugerunt.

All this was so ordained, to fulfil what was written by the prophets. And now all his disciples abandoned him, and fled.

Now all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then the disciples all leaving him, fled.

At illi tenentes Jesum, duxerunt ad Caipham principem sacerdotum, ubi scribæ et seniores convenerant.

And those who had arrested Jesus led him away into the presence of the high priest, Caiphas, where the scribes and the elders had assembled.

But they holding Jesus led him to Caiphas the high priest, where the scribes and the ancients were assembled.

Petrus autem sequebatur eum a longe, usque in atrium principis sacerdotum. Et ingressus intro, sedebat cum ministris, ut videret finem.

Yet Peter followed him at a long distance, as far as the high priest’s palace; where he went in and sat among the servants, to see the end.

And Peter followed him afar off, even to the court of the high priest. And going in, he sat with the servants, that he might see the end.

Principes autem sacerdotum, et omne concilium, quærebant falsum testimonium contra Jesum, ut eum morti traderent:

The chief priests and elders and all the Council tried to find false testimony against Jesus, such as would compass his death.

And the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death:

et non invenerunt, cum multi falsi testes accessissent. Novissime autem venerunt duo falsi testes,

But they could find none, although many came forward falsely accusing him; until at last two false accusers came forward

And they found not, whereas many false witnesses had come in. And last of all there came two false witnesses:

et dixerunt: Hic dixit: Possum destruere templum Dei, et post triduum reædificare illud.

who declared, This man said, I have power to destroy the temple of God and raise it again in three days.

And they said: This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and after three days to rebuild it.

Et surgens princeps sacerdotum, ait illi: Nihil respondes ad ea, quæ isti adversum te testificantur?

Then the high priest stood up, and asked him, Hast thou no answer to make to the accusations these men bring against thee?

And the high priest rising up, said to him: Answerest thou nothing to the things which these witness against thee?

Jesus autem tacebat. Et princeps sacerdotum ait illi: Adjuro te per Deum vivum, ut dicas nobis si tu es Christus Filius Dei.

Jesus was silent; and the high priest said to him openly, I adjure thee by the living God to tell us whether thou art the Christ, the Son of God?

But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest said to him: I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us if thou be the Christ the Son of God.

Dicit illi Jesus: Tu dixisti. Verumtamen dico vobis, amodo videbitis Filium hominis sedentem a dextris virtutis Dei, et venientem in nubibus cæli.

Jesus answered, Thy own lips have said it. And moreover I tell you this; you will see the Son of Man again, when he is seated at the right hand of God’s power, and comes on the clouds of heaven.

Jesus saith to him: Thou hast said it. Nevertheless I say to you, hereafter you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of God, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

Tunc princeps sacerdotum scidit vestimenta sua, dicens: Blasphemavit: quid adhuc egemus testibus? ecce nunc audistis blasphemiam:

At this, the high priest tore his garments, and said, He has blasphemed; what further need have we of witnesses? Mark well, you have heard his blasphemy for yourselves.

Then the high priest rent his garments, saying: He hath blasphemed; what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard the blasphemy:

quid vobis videtur? At illi respondentes dixerunt: Reus est mortis.

What is your finding? And they answered, The penalty is death.

What think you? But they answering, said: He is guilty of death.

Tunc exspuerunt in faciem ejus, et colaphis eum ceciderunt, alii autem palmas in faciem ejus dederunt,

Then they fell to spitting upon his face and buffeting him and smiting him on the cheek,

Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him: and others struck his face with the palms of their hands,

dicentes: Prophetiza nobis Christe, quis est qui te percussit?

saying as they did so, Shew thyself a prophet, Christ; tell us who it is that smote thee.

Saying: Prophesy unto us, O Christ, who is he that struck thee?

Petrus vero sedebat foris in atrio: et accessit ad eum una ancilla, dicens: Et tu cum Jesu Galilæo eras.

Meanwhile, Peter sat in the court without; and there a maid-servant came up to him, and said, Thou too wast with Jesus the Galilean.

But Peter sat without in the court: and there came to him a servant maid, saying: Thou also wast with Jesus the Galilean.

At ille negavit coram omnibus, dicens: Nescio quid dicis.

Whereupon he denied it before all the company; I do not know what thou meanest.

But he denied before them all, saying: I know not what thou sayest.

Exeunte autem illo januam, vidit eum alia ancilla, et ait his qui erant ibi: Et hic erat cum Jesu Nazareno.

And he went out into the porch, where a second maid-servant saw him, and said, to the bystanders, This man, too, was with Jesus the Nazarene.

And as he went out of the gate, another maid saw him, and she saith to them that were there: This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth.

Et iterum negavit cum juramento: Quia non novi hominem.

And he made denial again with an oath, I know nothing of the man.

And again he denied with an oath: I know not the man.

Et post pusillum accesserunt qui stabant, et dixerunt Petro: Vere et tu ex illis es: nam et loquela tua manifestum te facit.

But those who stood there came up to Peter soon afterwards, and said, It is certain that thou art one of them; even thy speech betrays thee.

And after a little while they came that stood by, and said to Peter: Surely thou also art one of them; for even thy speech doth discover thee.

Tunc cœpit detestari et jurare quia non novisset hominem. Et continuo gallus cantavit.

And with that he fell to calling down curses on himself and swearing, I know nothing of the man; and thereupon the cock crew.

Then he began to curse and to swear that he knew not the man. And immediately the cock crew.

Et recordatus est Petrus verbi Jesu, quod dixerat: Priusquam gallus cantet, ter me negabis. Et egressus foras, flevit amare.

Then Peter remembered the word of Jesus, how he had said, Before the cock crows, thou wilt thrice disown me; and he went out, and wept bitterly.

And Peter remembered the word of Jesus which he had said: Before the cock crow, thou wilt deny me thrice. And going forth, he wept bitterly.
