Factum est autem cum perfecisset Salomon ædificium domus Domini, et ædificium regis, et omne quod optaverat et voluerat facere,

And it came to pass when Solomon had finished the building of the house of the Lord, and the king’s house, and all that he desired, and was pleased to do,

When Solomon had finished building temple and palace, and achieved all his purpose,

apparuit ei Dominus secundo, sicut apparuerat ei in Gabaon.

That the Lord appeared to him the second time, as he had appeared to him in Gabaon.

the Lord appeared to him a second time, as he had appeared to him once at Gabaon.

Dixitque Dominus ad eum: Exaudivi orationem tuam et deprecationem tuam, quam deprecatus es coram me: sanctificavi domum hanc quam ædificasti, ut ponerem nomen meum ibi in sempiternum, et erunt oculi mei et cor meum ibi cunctis diebus.

And the Lord said to him: I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, which thou hast made before me: I have sanctified this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever, and my eyes and my heart shall be there always.

I have listened to thy prayer, the Lord told him, to the suit thou hast preferred before me; and this temple thou hast built I myself have hallowed, to be the everlasting shrine of my name; never a day but my eyes shall be watching, my heart attentive here.

Tu quoque si ambulaveris coram me sicut ambulavit pater tuus, in simplicitate cordis et in æquitate, et feceris omnia quæ præcepi tibi, et legitima mea et judicia mea servaveris,

And if thou wilt walk before me, as thy father walked, in simplicity of heart, and in uprightness: and wilt do all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my ordinances and my judgments,

Do thou guide thy steps, like thy father, as in my presence, with an undivided heart and steadfastly; do thou fulfil all that I command, hold true to my observances and my decrees;

ponam thronum regni tui super Israël in sempiternum, sicut locutus sum David patri tuo, dicens: Non auferetur vir de genere tuo de solio Israël.

I will establish the throne of thy kingdom over Israel for ever, as I promised David thy father, saying: There shall not fail a man of thy race upon the throne of Israel.

and I will grant to thy line dominion over Israel eternally. Such was my promise to thy father David, that he should always have an heir to sit on the throne of Israel.

Si autem aversione aversi fueritis vos et filii vestri, non sequentes me, nec custodientes mandata mea et cæremonias meas quas proposui vobis, sed abieritis et colueritis deos alienos, et adoraveritis eos:

But if you and your children revolting shall turn away from following me, and will not keep my commandments, and my ceremonies, which I have set before you, but will go and worship strange gods, and adore them:

But if you and your children are content to turn your backs on me, following me no more, neglecting the commands and observances I have enjoined on you, betaking yourselves to the service and worship of alien gods,

auferam Israël de superficie terræ quam dedi eis, et templum quod sanctificavi nomini meo, projiciam a conspectu meo: eritque Israël in proverbium, et in fabulam cunctis populis.

I will take away Israel from the face of the land which I have given them; and the temple which I have sanctified to my name, I will cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb, and a byword among all people.

then I will sweep Israel away from the land I gave them, and this temple which I have hallowed as the shrine of my name, shall be thrust away out of my sight. Israel shall become a proverb and a by-word among all the nations,

Et domus hæc erit in exemplum: omnis qui transierit per eam, stupebit, et sibilabit, et dicet: Quare fecit Dominus sic terræ huic, et domui huic?

And this house shall be made an example of: every one that shall pass by it, shall be astonished, and shall hiss, and say: Why hath the Lord done thus to this land, and to this house:

and this house shall be the monument of its fall. The passer-by will stand wondering, and hiss in derision; What means it, he will ask, that the Lord has treated this land, this house so cruelly?

Et respondebunt: Quia dereliquerunt Dominum Deum suum, qui eduxit patres eorum de terra Ægypti, et secuti sunt deos alienos, et adoraverunt eos, et coluerunt eos: idcirco induxit Dominus super eos omne malum hoc.

And they shall answer: Because they forsook the Lord their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and followed strange gods, and adored them, and worshipped them: therefore hath the Lord brought upon them all this evil.

And the answer will come, Because they forsook the Lord their God, who rescued their fathers from the land of Egypt, and betook themselves to the worship and service of alien gods; that is why the Lord brought all this ruin upon them.

Expletis autem annis viginti postquam ædificaverat Salomon duas domos, id est, domum Domini, et domum regis

And when twenty years were ended after Solomon had built the two houses, that is, the house of the Lord, and the house of the king,

It was twenty years after Solomon had finished the two buildings, temple and palace,

(Hiram rege Tyri præbente Salomoni ligna cedrina et abiegna, et aurum juxta omne quod opus habuerat), tunc dedit Salomon Hiram viginti oppida in terra Galilææ.

(Hiram the king of Tyre furnishing Solomon with cedar trees and fir trees, and gold according to all he had need of,) then Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee.

that Hiram, king of Tyre, who had sent him the cedar and the fir-wood and the gold he needed for his undertaking, received twenty townships from him, belonging to the land of Galilee.

Et egressus est Hiram de Tyro ut videret oppida quæ dederat ei Salomon, et non placuerunt ei.

And Hiram came out of Tyre, to see the towns which Solomon had given him, and they pleased him not,

And when he came on a visit from Tyre to see the townships Solomon had allotted to him, he liked them but little;

Et ait: Hæccine sunt civitates quas dedisti mihi, frater? Et appellavit eas terram Chabul, usque in diem hanc.

And he said: Are these the cities which thou hast given me, brother? And he called them the land of Chabul, unto this day.

What, brother, he cried, were these the only cities thou couldst spare me? And he gave that region the name of Chabul, which it bears to this day.

Misit quoque Hiram ad regem Salomonem centum viginti talenta auri.

And Hiram sent to king Solomon a hundred and twenty talents of gold.

It was twenty thousand talents’ weight of gold that Hiram sent to king Solomon.

Hæc est summa expensarum quam obtulit rex Salomon ad ædificandam domum Domini et domum suam, et Mello, et murum Jerusalem, et Heser, et Mageddo, et Gazer.

This is the sum of the expenses, which king Solomon offered to build the house of the Lord, and his own house, and Mello, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Heser, and Mageddo, and Gazer.

As for the reasons why king Solomon made such heavy disbursements, they were these; he must build the temple, and the palace, and Mello, and Jerusalem wall, and Heser, and Mageddo, and Gazer.

Pharao rex Ægypti ascendit, et cepit Gazar, succenditque eam igni, et Chananæum, qui habitabat in civitate, interfecit: et dedit eam in dotem filiæ suæ uxori Salomonis.

Pharao the king of Egypt came up and took Gazer, and burnt it with fire: and slew the Chanaanite that dwelt in the city, and gave it for a dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife.

Gazer had been taken and burnt by the invading army of Pharao, king of Egypt; its inhabitants, who were Chanaanites, he put to the sword, and later gave it by way of dowry when his daughter married king Solomon.

Ædificavit ergo Salomon Gazer, et Bethoron inferiorem,

So Solomon built Gazer, and Bethhoron the nether,

It was for Solomon, therefore, to rebuild it,

et Balaath, et Palmiram in terra solitudinis.

And Baalath, and Palmira in the land of the wilderness.

together with Lower Bethoron, and Baalath, and Palmyra out in the desert.

Et omnes vicos qui ad se pertinebant et erant absque muro, munivit, et civitates curruum et civitates equitum, et quodcumque ei placuit ut ædificaret in Jerusalem, et in Libano, et in omni terra potestatis suæ.

And all the towns that belonged to himself, and were not walled, he fortified, the cities also of the chariots, and the cities of the horsemen, and whatsoever he had a mind to build in Jerusalem, and in Libanus, and in all the land of his dominion.

And in general he fortified the unwalled towns in his dominions; he must have cities, too, in which his chariots and horsemen could be quartered. Much else, too, he had the whim to build in Jerusalem, and on Lebanon, and in all parts of his kingdom.

Universum populum qui remanserat de Amorrhæis, et Hethæis, et Pherezæis, et Hevæis, et Jebusæis, qui non sunt de filiis Israël:

All the people that were left of the Amorrhites, and Hethites, and Pherezites, and Hevites, and Jebusites, that are not of the children of Israel:

(Many of the former inhabitants still remained, not of Israelite stock, Amorrhites, Hethites, Pherezites, Hevites, and Jebusites;

horum filios qui remanserant in terra, quos scilicet non potuerant filii Israël exterminare, fecit Salomon tributarios usque in diem hanc.

Their children, that were left in the land, to wit, such as the children of Israel had not been able to destroy, Solomon made tributary unto this day.

and these descendants of the races which Israel could never exterminate, king Solomon made into bondservants, as they are to this day.

De filiis autem Israël non constituit Salomon servire quemquam, sed erant viri bellatores, et ministri ejus, et principes, et duces, et præfecti curruum et equorum.

But of the children of Israel Solomon made not any to be bondmen, but they were men of war, and his servants, and his princes, and captains, and overseers of the chariots and horses.

Among the Israelites, he would make no man his slave; it was from these that he drew his warriors and his courtiers, his princes and his captains, the commanders of his chariots and horsemen.

Erant autem principes super omnia opera Salomonis præpositi quingenti quinquaginta, qui habebant subjectum populum, et statutis operibus imperabant.

And there were five hundred and fifty chief officers set over all the works of Solomon, and they had people under them, and had charge over the appointed works.

Five hundred and fifty overseers king Solomon had, to hold the people to their appointed tasks.)

Filia autem Pharaonis ascendit de civitate David in domum suam, quam ædificaverat ei Salomon: tunc ædificavit Mello.

And the daughter of Pharao came up out of the city of David to her house, which Solomon had built for her: then did he build Mello.

And no sooner had Pharao’s daughter removed from the Keep of David to her new palace, than Solomon set about building up Mello.

Offerebat quoque Salomon, tribus vicibus per annos singulos, holocausta et pacificas victimas super altare quod ædificaverat Domino, et adolebat thymiama coram Domino: perfectumque est templum.

Solomon also offered three times every year holocausts, and victims of peace offerings upon the altar which he had built to the Lord, and he burnt incense before the Lord: and the temple was finished.

Three times a year Solomon offered burnt-sacrifice and welcome-offerings on the altar he had made in the Lord’s honour, and burned incense in the Lord’s presence; and he kept the temple in repair.

Classem quoque fecit rex Salomon in Asiongaber, quæ est juxta Ailath in littore maris Rubri, in terra Idumææ.

And king Solomon made a fleet in Asiongaber, which is by Ailath on the shore of the Red Sea in the land of Edom.

King Solomon also built a fleet at Asion-Gaber, near Ailath on the shore of the Red Sea, in the territory of Edom.

Misitque Hiram in classe illa servos suos viros nauticos et gnaros maris, cum servis Salomonis.

And Hiram sent his servants in the fleet, sailors that had knowledge of the sea, with the servants of Solomon.

In this fleet, Hiram sent men of his own, mariners that had long experience of the sea, to serve with king Solomon’s men.

Qui cum venissent in Ophir, sumptum inde aurum quadringentorum viginti talentorum, detulerunt ad regem Salomonem.

And they came to Ophir, and they brought from thence to king Solomon four hundred and twenty talents of gold.

They sailed as far as Ophir, and thence brought back to Solomon four hundred and twenty talents’ weight of gold.
