1 While the younger Tobias lingered thus over his marriage, his father fell into an extreme of anxiety. What means this long delay on my son’s part? he asked. What has detained him? |
1 But as Tobias made longer stay upon occasion of the marriage, Tobias his father was solicitous, saying: Why thinkest thou doth my son tarry, or why is he detained there? |
2 Cum vero moras faceret Tobias, causa nuptiarum, sollicitus erat pater ejus Tobias, dicens: Putas quare moratur filius meus, aut quare detentus est ibi? |
2 Can it be that Gabelus is dead, and there is no recovering the debt? |
2 Is Gabelus dead, thinkest thou, and no man will pay him the money? |
3 Great lament he made, and his wife Anna with him, and fast fell the tears of both, that the appointed day was over and their son not yet returned. |
3 And he began to be exceeding sad, both he and Anna his wife with him: and they began both to weep together: because their son did not return to them on the day appointed. |
4 The mother’s grief there was no consoling; My son, my son, she cried, why did we ever let thee go on thy travels? The light of our eyes, the support of our old age, our comfort in life, our hope of posterity when we are gone; |
4 But his mother wept and was quite disconsolate, and said: Woe, woe is me, my son; why did we send thee to go to a strange country, the light of our eyes, the staff of our old age, the comfort of our life, the hope of our posterity? |
5 Flebat igitur mater ejus irremediabilibus lacrimis, atque dicebat: Heu, heu me, fili mi! ut quid te misimus peregrinari, lumen oculorum nostrorum, baculum senectutis nostræ, solatium vitæ nostræ, spem posteritatis nostræ? |
5 all this thou wert, and thou alone; how could we let thee leave our sight? |
5 We having all things together in thee alone, ought not to have let thee go from us. |
6 omnia simul in te uno habentes, te non debuimus dimittere a nobis. |
6 All in vain did Tobias try to comfort her, with, Peace, woman; never disquiet thyself; there is nought amiss with our son; it was a trusty companion we sent with him. |
6 And Tobias said to her: Hold thy peace, and be not troubled, our son is safe: that man with whom we sent him is very trusty. |
7 Comfort she would have none; no day passed but she would rise from her place and view the landscape all about, or roam the streets, hoping she might get some rumour, some distant glimpse of his return. |
7 But she could by no means be comforted, but daily running out looked round about, and went into all the ways by which there seemed any hope he might return, that she might if possible see him coming afar off. |
8 Meanwhile, Raguel was pressing his son-in-law to stay on; I will send a message to thy father, said he, to assure him of thy safety. |
8 But Raguel said to his son in law: Stay here, and I will send a messenger to Tobias thy father, that thou art in health. |
9 But Tobias would have none of it; No question, said he, but my father and mother are counting the days, and tormenting their hearts over me. |
9 And Tobias said to him: I know that my father and mother now count the days, and their spirit is grievously afflicted within them. |
10 Cui Tobias ait: Ego novi quia pater meus et mater mea modo dies computant, et cruciatur spiritus eorum in ipsis. |
10 Still Raguel plied him with entreaties, and still could not win his consent. So at last he gave Sara into Tobias’ keeping, and with her half his goods, men and maid servants, sheep and camels and cows, and of money a great sum, and let him go his way, safe and content. |
10 And when Raguel had pressed Tobias with many words, and he by no means would hearken to him, he delivered Sara unto him, and half of all his substance in menservants, and womenservants, in cattle, in camels, and in kine, and in much money, and sent him away safe and joyful from him, |
11 Cumque verbis multis rogaret Raguel Tobiam, et ille eum nulla ratione vellet audire, tradidit ei Saram, et dimidiam partem omnis substantiæ suæ in pueris, in puellis, in pecudibus, in camelis, et in vaccis, et in pecunia multa: et salvum atque gaudentem dimisit eum a se, |
11 The Lord’s holy angel, said he, go with you on your journey, and bring you home without scathe, to find that all is well, Tobias and Anna both. And may my life be spared to see children born of you. |
11 Saying: The holy angel of the Lord be with you in your journey, and bring you through safe, and that you may find all things well about your parents, and my eyes may see your children before I die. |
12 dicens: Angelus Domini sanctus sit in itinere vestro, perducatque vos incolumes, et inveniatis omnia recte circa parentes vestros, et videant oculi mei filios vestros priusquam moriar. |
12 So Raguel and Anna embraced their daughter, and kissed her, and set her on her way, |
12 And the parents taking their daughter kissed her, and let her go: |
13 full of good counsel to the last; how she was to give father-in-law and mother-in-law their due, love her husband, be mistress in her own house, order it well, and prove herself the perfection of a woman. |
13 Admonishing her to honour her father and mother in law, to love her husband, to take care of the family, to govern the house, and to behave herself irreprehensibly. |
