Benedictus Dominus, qui exaltavit eam, et sit regnum ejus in sæcula sæculorum super eam. Amen.

And the words of Tobias were ended. And after Tobias was restored to his sight, he lived two and forty years, and saw the children of his grandchildren.

Such was the song of Tobias. He lived forty-two years after recovering his sight, lived to see his great-grandchildren;

Et consummati sunt sermones Tobiæ. Et postquam illuminatus est Tobias, vixit annis quadraginta duobus, et vidit filios nepotum suorum.

And after he had lived a hundred and two years, he was buried honourably in Ninive.

then, dying at the age of a hundred and two, he was buried with due honour in the town of Nineve.

Completis itaque annis centum duobus, sepultus est honorifice in Ninive.

For he was six and fifty years old when he lost the sight of his eyes, and sixty when he recovered it again.

He lost his sight at the age of fifty-six, recovered it at the age of sixty,

Quinquaginta namque et sex annorum lumen oculorum amisit, sexagenarius vero recepit.

And the rest of his life was in joy, and with great increase of the fear of God he departed in peace.

and lived out the rest of his life in great content, his course ever untroubled, his conscience ever more tender towards God.

Reliquum vero vitæ suæ in gaudio fuit, et cum bono profectu timoris Dei perrexit in pace.

And at the hour of his death he called unto him his son Tobias and his children, seven young men, his grandsons, and said to them:

On his death-bed, he called his seven grandsons to him, with their father Tobias, and spoke thus:

In hora autem mortis suæ vocavit ad se Tobiam filium suum, et septem juvenes filios ejus nepotes suos, dixitque eis:

The destruction of Ninive is at hand: for the word of the Lord must be fulfilled: and our brethren, that are scattered abroad from the land of Israel, shall return to it.

The Lord’s words must needs come true; it will not be long before Nineve is destroyed. After that, our exiled brethren will be able to return to the land of Israel;

Prope erit interitus Ninive: non enim excidit verbum Domini: et fratres nostri, qui dispersi sunt a terra Israël, revertentur ad eam.

And all the land thereof that is desert shall be filled with people, and the house of God which is burnt in it, shall again be rebuilt: and all that fear God shall return thither.

the deserted country-side will be populous once again, and its temple, long since destroyed by fire, will be built anew, and all those who fear God will find their way back to it.

Omnis autem deserta terra ejus replebitur, et domus Dei, quæ in ea incensa est, iterum reædificabitur: ibique revertentur omnes timentes Deum,

And the Gentiles shall leave their idols, and shall come into Jerusalem, and shall dwell in it.

Then the Gentiles, too, will forsake their false gods; will betake themselves to Jerusalem, and find a home there;

et relinquent gentes idola sua, et venient in Jerusalem, et inhabitabunt in ea:

And all the kings of the earth shall rejoice in it, adoring the King of Israel.

all the kings of the earth will take pride in it, as they pay worship to the king who reigns in Israel.

et gaudebunt in ea omnes reges terræ, adorantes regem Israël.

Hearken therefore, my children, to your father: serve the Lord in truth, and seek to do the things that please him:

This, then, my sons, is your father’s testament: Keep true to the Lord’s service, studying ever to carry out his will;

Audite ergo, filii mei, patrem vestrum: servite Domino in veritate, et inquirite ut faciatis quæ placita sunt illi:

And command your children that they do justice and almsdeeds, and that they be mindful of God, and bless him at all times in truth, and with all their power.

and hand on this charge to your children, that they should do what the law enjoins and give alms freely, that they should keep God ever in mind, offering him faithful praise at all times, and with all their strength.

et filiis vestris mandate ut faciant justitias et eleemosynas, ut sint memores Dei, et benedicant eum in omni tempore in veritate, et in tota virtute sua.

And now, children, hear me, and do not stay here: but as soon as you shall bury your mother by me in one sepulchre, without delay direct your steps to depart hence:

And you, my sons, heed well this warning of mine; do not linger in this country, but leave it as soon as you have laid your mother to rest at my side, to share my grave;

Nunc ergo filii, audite me, et nolite manere hic: sed quacumque die sepelieritis matrem vestram circa me in uno sepulchro, ex eo dirigite gressus vestros ut exeatis hinc:

For I see that its iniquity will bring it to destruction.

there is guilt at Nineve, I see well, that must needs bring it to ruin.

video enim quia iniquitas ejus finem dabit ei.

And it came to pass that after the death of his mother Tobias departed out of Ninive with his wife, and children, and children’s children, and returned to his father and mother in law.

So, when his mother died, Tobias, with his wife, sons and grandsons left Nineve. He betook himself to his wife’s parents instead,

Factum est autem post obitum matris suæ, Tobias abscessit ex Ninive cum uxore sua, et filiis, et filiorum filiis, et reversus est ad soceros suos:

And he found them in health in a good old age: and he took care of them, and he closed their eyes: and all the inheritance of Raguel’s house came to him: and he saw his children’s children to the fifth generation.

and found them thriving still, well content in their old age. Tenderly he cared for them, and when they died it was he that closed their eyes in death. Then he became heir to all Raguel possessed, and himself lived to see a fresh generation yet, descendants of his own.

invenitque eos incolumes in senectute bona: et curam eorum gessit, et ipse clausit oculos eorum: et omnem hæreditatem domus Raguelis ipse percepit: viditque quintam generationem, filios filiorum suorum.

And after he had lived ninety-nine years in the fear of the Lord, with joy they buried him.

Ninety-nine years he lived in the fear of God, and with full hearts they buried him.

Et completis annis nonaginta novem in timore Domini, cum gaudio sepelierunt eum.

And all his kindred, and all his generation continued in good life, and in holy conversation, so that they were acceptable both to God, and to men, and to all that dwelt in the land.

No kith or kin of his but persevered in uprightness and holy living; God’s favour they had and man’s alike, well loved by all their neighbours.
