Transacta autem tertia nocte, accipies virginem cum timore Domini, amore filiorum magis quam libidine ductus, ut in semine Abrahæ benedictionem in filiis consequaris.

And they went in to Raguel, and Raguel received them with joy.

To Raguel, then, they went, and right gladly he welcomed them;

Ingressi sunt autem ad Raguelem, et suscepit eos Raguel cum gaudio.

And Raguel looking upon Tobias, said to Anna his wife: How like is this young man to my cousin?

he no sooner caught sight of Tobias than he said to his wife Anna, Here is a young man has the very look of my cousin Tobias!

Intuensque Tobiam Raguel, dixit Annæ uxori suæ: Quam similis est juvenis iste consobrino meo!

And when he had spoken these words, he said: Whence are ye young men our brethren?

Then he asked them, Whence come you, fellow-countrymen?

Et cum hæc dixisset, ait: Unde estis juvenes fratres nostri? At illi dixerunt: Ex tribu Nephthali sumus, ex captivitate Ninive.

But they said: We are of the tribe of Nephtali, of the captivity of Ninive.

And, upon hearing that they were of Nephthali’s tribe, exiles dwelling at Nineve,

Dixitque illis Raguel: Nostis Tobiam fratrem meum? Qui dixerunt: Novimus.

And Raguel said to them: Do you know Tobias my brother? And they said: We know him.

Do you know my cousin, Tobias? Yes, they said, we know him well.

Cumque multa bona loqueretur de eo, dixit angelus ad Raguelem: Tobias, de quo interrogas, pater istius est.

And when he was speaking many good things of him, the angel said to Raguel: Tobias concerning whom thou inquirest is this young man’s father.

With that, Raguel fell to singing his cousin’s praises, but the angel cut him short: Thou dost well to ask about Tobias; this is his son.

Et misit se Raguel, et cum lacrimis osculatus est eum, et plorans supra collum ejus

And Raguel went to him, and kissed him with tears, and weeping upon his neck, said: A blessing be upon thee, my son, because thou art the son of a good and most virtuous man.

Thereupon Raguel threw his arms about him, and wept, and kissed him, and wept again; A blessing on thee, my son, cried he; ‘tis a good man, a good excellent man, thou hast for thy father!

dixit: Benedictio sit tibi, fili mi, quia boni et optimi viri filius es.

And Anna his wife, and Sara their daughter wept.

And there stood his wife Anna, and their daughter Sara, in tears like himself.

Et Anna uxor ejus, et Sara ipsorum filia, lacrimatæ sunt.

And after they had spoken, Raguel commanded a sheep to be killed, and a feast to be prepared. And when he desired them to sit down to dinner,

When they had spent some time in talk, Raguel would have a ram killed, and a feast made. But it was in vain he urged them to fall to;

Postquam autem locuti sunt, præcepit Raguel occidi arietem, et parari convivium. Cumque hortaretur eos discumbere ad prandium,

Tobias said: I will not eat nor drink here this day, unless thou first grant me my petition, and promise to give me Sara thy daughter.

Neither eat nor drink will I in this house, Tobias said, until thou dost grant a request of mine. And my request is for the hand of thy daughter Sara in marriage.

Tobias dixit: Hic ego hodie non manducabo neque bibam, nisi prius petitionem meam confirmes, et promittas mihi dare Saram filiam tuam.

Now when Raguel heard this he was afraid, knowing what had happened to those seven husbands, that went in unto her: and he began to fear lest it might happen to him also in like manner: and as he was in suspense, and gave no answer to his petition,

Upon hearing this, Raguel was much taken aback; he had not forgotten what befell those other seven men that went near her bed; and the fear assailed him, What if this one fares no better? But while he hummed and hawed over his answer,

Quo audito verbo Raguel expavit, sciens quid evenerit illis septem viris qui ingressi sunt ad eam: et timere cœpit ne forte et hunc similiter contingeret. Et cum nutaret, et non daret petenti ullum responsum,

The angel said to him: Be not afraid to give her to this man, for to him who feareth God is thy daughter due to be his wife: therefore another could not have her.

the angel said, Do not be afraid to give him thy daughter’s hand; for his pious care she was destined, that is why those other wooers could not gain their suit.

dixit ei angelus: Noli timere dare eam isti, quoniam huic timenti Deum debetur conjux filia tua: propterea alius non potuit habere illam.

Then Raguel said: I doubt not but God hath regarded my prayers and tears in his sight.

Why then, answered Raguel, all those prayers and sighs of mine were not wasted; God has granted them audience;

Tunc dixit Raguel: Non dubito quod Deus preces et lacrimas meas in conspectu suo admiserit.

And I believe he hath therefore made you come to me, that this maid might be married to one of her own kindred, according to the law of Moses: and now doubt not but I will give her to thee.

and I doubt not his design in bringing you here was to have my daughter matched with one of her own kin, as the law of Moses bade. Then he said to Tobias, Have no fear, she is thine.

Et credo quoniam ideo fecit vos venire ad me, ut ista conjungeretur cognationi suæ secundum legem Moysi: et nunc noli dubium gerere quod tibi eam tradam.

And taking the right hand of his daughter, he gave it into the right hand of Tobias, saying: The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob be with you, and may he join you together, and fulfil his blessing in you.

And so, taking his daughter’s right hand and putting it into the right hand of Tobias, he gave them his blessing: May the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob be with you and himself join you in one, and fulfil his merciful purpose in you.

Et apprehendens dexteram filiæ suæ, dexteræ Tobiæ tradidit, dicens: Deus Abraham, et Deus Isaac, et Deus Jacob vobiscum sit, et ipse conjungat vos, impleatque benedictionem suam in vobis.

And taking paper they made a writing of the marriage.

So they took paper, and signed a contract of marriage;

Et accepta carta, fecerunt conscriptionem conjugii.

And afterwards they made merry, blessing God.

then they sat down to their feasting, and gave thanks to God.

Et post hæc epulati sunt, benedicentes Deum.

And Raguel called to him Anna his wife, and bade her prepare another chamber.

Meanwhile Raguel called Anna aside, and bade her have a fresh room in readiness.

Vocavitque Raguel ad se Annam uxorem suam, et præcepit ei ut præpararet alterum cubiculum.

And she brought Sara her daughter in thither, and she wept.

Into this she brought her daughter Sara, weeping as she did so;

Et introduxit illuc Saram filiam suam, et lacrimata est.

And she said to her: Be of good cheer, my daughter: the Lord of heaven give thee joy for the trouble thou hast undergone.

then she said, Do not lose heart, daughter; thou hast had sadness enough; may the Lord of heaven give thee gladness in exchange.
