Chapter 15
|
Vulgate><Douay-Rheims><Knox Bible
1
Fecit quoque sibi domos in civitate David: et ædificavit locum arcæ Dei, tetenditque ei tabernaculum.
1
He made also houses for himself in the city of David: and built a place for the ark of God, and pitched a tabernacle for it.
1
When he put up buildings in the Keep of David, he was careful to leave a plot of ground for God’s ark, and pitch a tent for it there.
2
Tunc dixit David: Illicitum est ut a quocumque portetur arca Dei nisi a Levitis, quos elegit Dominus ad portandum eam, et ad ministrandum sibi usque in æternum.
2
Then David said: No one ought to carry the ark of God, but the Levites, whom the Lord hath chosen to carry it, and to minister unto himself for ever.
2
He thought to himself, too, God’s ark must not be carried this way and that by the first comer; the Levites, whom the Lord has chosen out to be his servants for all time, have the duty of carrying it.
3
Congregavitque universum Israël in Jerusalem, ut afferretur arca Dei in locum suum, quem præparaverat ei:
3
And he gathered all Israel together into Jerusalem, that the ark of God might be brought into its place, which he had prepared for it.
3
So now, summoning all Israel to Jerusalem, for the removal of the ark to the site he had prepared for it,
4
necnon et filios Aaron, et Levitas.
4
And the sons of Aaron also, and the Levites.
4
he summoned among the rest Aaron’s descendants, and the Levites.
5
5
Of the children of Caath, Uriel was the chief, and his brethren a hundred and twenty.
5
There were a hundred and twenty Caathites, under Uriel,
6
6
Of the sons of Merari, Asaia the chief, and his brethren two hundred and twenty.
6
two hundred and twenty Merarites, under Asaia,
7
7
Of the sons of Gersom, Joel the chief, and his brethren a hundred and thirty.
7
a hundred and thirty Gersonites, under Joel,
8
8
Of the sons of Elisaphan, Semeias the chief: and his brethren two hundred.
8
two hundred of Elisaphan’s clan, under Semeias,
9
9
Of the sons of Hebron, Eliel the chief: and his brethren eighty.
9
eighty of Hebron’s, under Eliel,
10
10
Of the sons of Oziel, Aminadab the chief: and his brethren a hundred and twelve.
10
and a hundred and twelve of Oziel’s, under Aminadab.
11
Vocavitque David Sadoc et Abiathar sacerdotes, et Levitas, Uriel, Asaiam, Joël, Semeiam, Eliel, et Aminadab:
11
And David called Sadoc, and Abiathar the priests, and the Levites, Uriel, Asaia, Joel, Semeia, Eliel, and Aminadab:
11
These six David sent for, with the chief priests, Sadoc and Abiathar;
12
12
And he said to them: You that are the heads of the Levitical families, be sanctified with your brethren, and bring the ark of the Lord the God of Israel to the place, which is prepared for it:
12
You, he said, are the chiefs of the Levite clans; look well to it that you and your brethren are purified of all defilement before you bring the ark of the Lord God of Israel to the site prepared for it.
13
13
Lest as the Lord at first struck us, because you were not present, the same should now also come to pass, by our doing some thing against the law.
13
Earlier, when you were not there, we brought on ourselves the Lord’s chastisement; there must be no such happening now, for want of due order taken.
14
14
So the priests and the Levites were sanctified, to carry the ark of the Lord the God of Israel.
14
So priest and Levite cleansed themselves for carrying the ark of the Lord God of Israel;
15
Et tulerunt filii Levi arcam Dei, sicut præceperat Moyses juxta verbum Domini, humeris suis in vectibus.
15
And the sons of Levi took the ark of God as Moses had commanded, according to the word of the Lord, upon their shoulders, with the staves.
15
and the ark was carried by Levites, with poles resting on their shoulders, as Moses, speaking in the Lord’s name, had enjoined.
16
16
And David spoke to the chiefs of the Levites, to appoint some of their brethren to be singers with musical instruments, to wit, on psalteries, and harps, and cymbals, that the joyful noise might resound on high.
16
Then David would have the Levite chiefs appoint some of their brethren to be singers, chanting there with instruments of music, zither and harp and cymbals, till heaven rang with the echoes of their rejoicing.
17
Constitueruntque Levitas: Heman filium Joël, et de fratribus ejus Asaph filium Barachiæ: de filiis vero Merari, fratribus eorum: Ethan filium Casaiæ.
17
And they appointed Levites, Hemam the son of Joel, and of his brethren Asaph the son of Barachias: and of the sons of Merari, their brethren: Ethan the son of Casaia.
17
So they appointed two Gersonites, Joel’s son Heman and Asaph son of Barachias, and Ethan, son of Casias, of the clan of Merari,
18
18
And with them their brethren: in the second rank, Zacharias, and Ben, and Jaziel, and Semiramoth, and Jahiel, and Ani, and Eliab, and Banaias, and Maasias, and Mathathias, and Eliphalu, and Macenias, and Obededom, and Jehiel, the porters.
18
with others of lesser degree, their fellow clansmen, Zacharias, Ben, Jaziel, Semiramoth, Jahiel, Ani, Eliab, Banaias, Maasias, Mathathias, Eliphalu, Macenias, Obededom and Jehiel, that all held the office of door-keeper.
19
Porro cantores, Heman, Asaph, et Ethan, in cymbalis æneis concrepantes.
19
Now the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, sounded with cymbals of brass.
19
Of these singers, Heman, Asaph and Ethan beat cymbals together,
20
20
And Zacharias, and Oziel, and Semiramoth, and Jehiel, and Ani, and Eliab, and Maasias, and Banaias, sung mysteries upon psalteries.
20
Zacharias, Oziel, Semiramoth, Jahiel, Ani, Eliab, Maasias and Banaias played, on their zithers, the Alamoth,
21
21
And Mathathias, and Eliphalu, and Macenias and Obededom, and Jehiel and Ozaziu, sung a song of victory for the octave upon harps.
21
while Mathathias, Eliphalu, Macenias, Obededom, Jehiel and Ozaziu led the triumph-song, Seminith-fashion, with the harps they bore.
22
22
And Chonenias chief of the Levites, presided over the prophecy, to give out the tunes: for he was very skilful.
22
And Chonenias, chief of the Levites, was burden-master, a burden-master chosen for his excellent skill.
23
Et Barachias, et Elcana, janitores arcæ.
23
And Barachias, and Elcana, were doorkeepers of the ark.
23
The doors of the ark were guarded by Barachias and Elcana;
24
Porro Sebenias, et Josaphat, et Nathanaël, et Amasai, et Zacharias, et Banaias, et Eliezer sacerdotes, clangebant tubis coram arca Dei: et Obededom et Jehias erant janitores arcæ.
24
And Sebenias, and Josaphat, and Nathanael, and Amasai, and Zacharias, and Banaias, and Eliezer the priests, sounded with trumpets, before the ark of God: and Obededom and Jehias were porters of the ark.
24
and there were seven priests, Sebenias, Josaphat, Nathanael, Amasai, Zacharias, Banaias and Eliezer, that blew trumpets before it. (And the doors of the ark were guarded by Obededom and Jehias. )
25
25
So David and all the ancients of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of the house of Obededom with joy.
25
So with great rejoicing went David, and with him went all the elders of Israel and all his captains, to Obededom’s house, to fetch the ark that bears witness of the Lord’s covenant.
26
Cumque adjuvisset Deus Levitas qui portabant arcam fœderis Domini, immolabantur septem tauri, et septem arietes.
26
And when God had helped the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, they offered in sacrifice seven oxen, and seven rams.
26
And as the Lord sped the Levites on their journey, with the ark for their load, seven bulls and seven rams were offered in sacrifice.
27
27
And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites that carried the ark, and the singing men, and Chonenias the ruler of the prophecy among the singers: and David also had on him an ephod of linen.
27
Like the Levites who carried the ark, the singers, and Chonenias that went as burden-master among the singers, David was clad in a robe of lawn; and he had a mantle of linen as well.
28
Universusque Israël deducebant arcam fœderis Domini in jubilo, et sonitu buccinæ, et tubis, et cymbalis, et nablis, et citharis concrepantes.
28
And all Israel brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord with joyful shouting, and sounding with the sound of the cornet, and with trumpets, and cymbals, and psalteries, and harps.
28
Thus all Israel brought the ark home, keeping high festival, to the sound of horn and trumpet and cymbals and zither and harp.
29
Cumque pervenisset arca fœderis Domini usque ad civitatem David, Michol filia Saul prospiciens per fenestram vidit regem David saltantem atque ludentem, et despexit eum in corde suo.
29
And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord was come to the city of David, Michol the daughter of Saul looking out at a window, saw king David dancing and playing, and she despised him in her heart.
29
Only Michal, Saul’s daughter, watching from her window as the ark reached David’s Citadel, thought scorn of king David as she saw him dancing and making music there.
