1
1
And the divisions of the porters: of the Corites Meselemia, the son of Core, of the sons of Asaph.
1
The door-keepers, too, were divided into families. For the Corites, there was Meselemia, a son of Asaph,
2
Filii Meselemiæ: Zacharias primogenitus, Jadihel secundus, Zabadias tertius, Jathanaël quartus,
2
The sons of Meselemia: Zacharias the firstborn, Jadihel the second, Zabadias the third, Jathanael the fourth,
2
and his seven sons, Zacharias, Jadihel, Zabadias, Jathanael,
3
Ælam quintus, Johanan sextus, Elioënai septimus.
3
Elam the fifth, Johanan the sixth, Elioenai the seventh.
3
Aelam, Johanan and Elioenai;
4
Filii autem Obededom: Semeias primogenitus, Jozabad secundus, Joaha tertius, Sachar quartus, Nathanaël quintus,
4
And the sons of Obededom, Semeias the firstborn, Jozabad the second, Joaha the third, Sachar the fourth, Nathanael the fifth,
4
together with the eight sons of Obededom, Semeias, Jozabad, Joaha, Sachar, Nathanael,
5
Ammiel sextus, Issachar septimus, Phollathi octavus: quia benedixit illi Dominus.
5
Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Phollathi the eighth: for the Lord had blessed him.
5
Ammiel, Issachar and Phollathi; such blessing had Obededom from the Lord.
6
6
And to Semei his son were born sons, heads of their families: for they were men of great valour.
6
His grandsons, too, through Semeias, were tried warriors and heads of separate families,
7
Filii ergo Semeiæ: Othni, et Raphaël, et Obed, Elzabad, fratres ejus viri fortissimi: Eliu quoque et Samachias.
7
The sons then of Semeias were Othni, and Raphael, and Obed, Elizabad, and his brethren most valiant men: and Eliu, and Samachias.
7
Othni, and his warrior brothers, Raphael, Obed, Elzabad, Eliu, and Samachias.
8
8
All these of the sons of Obededom: they, and their sons, and their brethren most able men for service, sixty-two of Obededom.
8
All these were descended from Obededom, and with their sons and brethren, sturdy ministrants, they made a company of sixty-two;
9
Porro Meselemiæ filii, et fratres eorum robustissimi, decem et octo.
9
And the sons of Meselemia, and their brethren strong men, were eighteen.
9
the descendants of Meselemia, with their sons and brethren, valorous men too, were but twenty-eight.
10
10
And of Hosa, that is, of the sons of Merari: Semri the chief, (for he had not a firstborn, and therefore his father made him chief.)
10
And for Merari there were the sons of Hosa; their father, his first-born lost, gave the chief place among them to Semri;
11
Helcias secundus, Tabelias tertius, Zacharias quartus: omnes hi filii et fratres Hosa, tredecim.
11
Helcias the second, Tabelias the third, Zacharias the fourth: all these the sons, and the brethren of Hosa, were thirteen.
11
the others were Helcias, Tabelias and Zacharias. Sons and brethren Hosa had in all thirteen.
12
12
Among these were the divisions of the porters, so that the chiefs of the wards, as well as their brethren, always ministered in the house of the Lord.
12
These were the men appointed to serve as commanders of the temple watch, sharing the duty with their brethren.
13
13
And they cast lots equally, both little and great, by their families for every one of the gates.
13
Lots were cast between the various families, without regard to seniority, and so the various gates were assigned to them;
14
Cecidit ergo sors orientalis, Selemiæ. Porro Zachariæ filio ejus, viro prudentissimo et erudito, sortito obtigit plaga septentrionalis.
14
And the lot of the east fell to Selemias. But to his son Zacharias, a very wise and learned man, the north gate fell by lot.
14
the eastern side fell to Meselemias, the northern to his son Zacharias, a shrewd man and skilful;
15
Obededom vero et filiis ejus ad austrum: in qua parte domus erat seniorum concilium.
15
And to Obededom and his sons that towards the south: in which part of the house was the council of the ancients.
15
the south, where the elders sat in council, to Obededom’s family,
16
16
To Sephim, and Hosa towards the west, by the gate which leadeth to the way of the ascent: ward against ward.
16
(to Sephim and) to Hosa the western side by the gate at the head of the ascent; to each family its own watch.
17
17
Now towards the east were six Levites: and towards the north four a day: and towards the south likewise four a day: and where the council was, two and two.
17
Each day there must be six Levites on guard to the east, four to the north, four to the south, with two more on each side of the council-chamber,
18
18
In the cells also of the porters toward the west four in the way: and two at every cell.
18
and on the west, where the door-keepers had their guard-rooms, four without and two in either guard-room.
19
19
These are the divisions of the porters of the sons of Core, and of Merari.
19
Thus were duties assigned to the door-keepers, all of the Corite and Merarite families.
20
Porro Achias erat super thesauros domus Dei, et vasa sanctorum.
20
Now Achias was over the treasures of the house of God, and the holy vessels.
20
The Levites, too, under Achias, had charge of the temple treasury, and of the votive offerings.
21
Filii Ledan, filii Gersonni: de Ledan principes familiarum Ledan, et Gersonni, Jehieli.
21
The sons of Ledan, the sons of Gersonni: of Ledan were heads of the families, of Ledan, and Gersonni, Jehieli.
21
Some of these came down from Ledan, son of Gersom; the heads of their families were named after Jehiel, who was descended from Gersom by Ledan,
22
Filii Jehieli: Zathan, et Joël fratres ejus super thesauros domus Domini.
22
The sons of Jehieli: Zathan and Joel, his brethren over the treasures of the house of the Lord,
22
and Jehiel’s two sons, Zathan and Joel. These families had the permanent treasures of the Lord’s house in their charge, representing the whole Caathite clan,
23
Amramitis, et Isaaritis, et Hebronitis, et Ozihelitis.
23
With the Amramites, and Isaarites, and Hebronites, and Ozielites.
23
Amramites, Isaarites, Hebronites and Ozihelites alike;
24
Subaël autem filius Gersom filii Moysi, præpositus thesauris.
24
And Subael the son of Gersom, the son of Moses, was chief over the treasures.
24
and the treasurer was Subael, descended through Gersom from Moses.
25
Fratres quoque ejus Eliezer, cujus filius Rahabia, et hujus filius Isaias, et hujus filius Joram, hujus quoque filius Zechri, et hujus filius Selemith.
25
His brethren also, Eliezer, whose son Rohobia, and his son Isaias, and his son Joram, and his son Zechri, and his son Selemith.
25
Meanwhile Gersom’s brother Eliezer was represented by Selemith, his descendant through Rahabia, Isaias, Joram and Zechri;
26
Ipse Selemith, et fratres ejus, super thesauros sanctorum quæ sanctificavit David rex, et principes familiarum, et tribuni, et centuriones, et duces exercitus,
26
Which Selemith and his brethren were over the treasures of the holy things, which king David, and the heads of families, and the captains over thousands and over hundreds, and the captains of the host had dedicated,
26
it was Selemith and his kindred that were treasurers of the votive offerings made by king David, by head of clan and captain and chief and general under him;
27
27
Out of the wars, and the spoils won in battles, which they had consecrated to the building and furniture of the temple of the Lord.
27
out of their wars and the spoils of their wars, they made these offerings for the maintenance and furnishing of the Lord’s house.
28
28
And all these things that Samuel the seer and Saul the son of Cis, and Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Sarvia had sanctified: and whosoever had sanctified those things, they were under the hand of Selemith and his brethren.
28
There was much that had been dedicated by the prophet Samuel, by Saul the son of Cis, Abner son of Ner, and Joab son of Sarvia; everything so dedicated was under the care of Selemith and his kindred.
29
29
But Chonenias and his sons were over the Isaarites, for the business abroad over Israel to teach them and judge them.
29
The Isaarite clan, under Chonenias and his sons, had the affairs of Israel, beyond the confines of the city, in their charge, as teachers and judges;
30
Porro de Hebronitis Hasabias, et fratres ejus viri fortissimi, mille septingenti præerant Israëli trans Jordanem contra occidentem, in cunctis operibus Domini, et in ministerium regis.
30
And of the Hebronites Hasabias, and his brethren most able men, a thousand seven hundred had the charge over Israel beyond the Jordan westward, in all the works of the Lord, and for the service of the king.
30
and for the Lord’s service and the king’s business in general the Hebronites, a thousand and seven hundred active men under Hasabias and his brethren, commanded the whole of Israel west of the Jordan.
31
31
And the chief of the Hebronites was Jeria according to their families and kindreds. In the fortieth year of the reign of David they were numbered, and there were found most valiant men in Jazer Galaad,
31
And of the Hebronites … with all their clans and families, Jeria was the chief. In the fortieth year of king David, a register was taken at Jazer in Galaad, and the active men of his clan,
32
fratresque ejus robustioris ætatis, duo millia septingenti principes familiarum.
32
And his brethren of stronger age, two thousand seven hundred chiefs of families. And king David made them rulers over the Rubenites and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasses, for all the service of God, and the king.
32
all in the prime of life, counted two thousand and seven hundred (heads of families). These, for the Lord’s service and for the king’s business, David put in charge of Ruben and Gad and the eastern half of Manasses.
