Chapter 29
|
Vulgate><Douay-Rheims><Knox Bible
1
1
And king David said to all the assembly: Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is as yet young and tender: and the work is great, for a house is prepared not for man, but for God.
1
This, too, David said to all who were assembled there: The Lord’s choice has fallen on my son Solomon, and no other, a prince still young and untried. Heavy the task, to house God, not man.
2
2
And I with all my ability have prepared the expenses for the house of my God. Gold for vessels of gold, and silver for vessels of silver, brass for things of brass, iron for things of iron, wood for things of wood: and onyx stones, and stones like alabaster, and of divers colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble of Paros in great abundance.
2
Whatever lies in me I have done, to make ready the material for the temple of my God; gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood where they were needed, onyx and jet and precious stones of all colours, abundance, too, of the best marble.
3
et super hæc quæ obtuli in domum Dei mei de peculio meo aurum et argentum, do in templum Dei mei, exceptis his quæ præparavi in ædem sanctam.
3
Now over and above the things which I have offered into the house of my God I give of my own proper goods, gold and silver for the temple of my God, beside what things I have prepared for the holy house.
3
Such love had I to the house of my God; and now, over and above the preparations I have made for this holy work, I offer gold and silver out of my own purse for the temple’s needs;
4
4
Three thousand talents of gold of the gold of Ophir: and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the temple.
4
three thousand talents of Ophir gold and seven thousand talents of tried silver. All this, for gilding the temple walls,
5
5
And gold for wheresoever there is need of gold: and silver for wheresoever there is need of silver, for the works to be made by the hands of the artificers: now if any man is willing to offer, let him fill his hand to day, and offer what he pleaseth to the Lord.
5
and to put more gold and silver into the craftsmen’s hands.Let every man that has the will to offer make to the Lord here and now, with open hand, his gift.
6
6
Then the heads of the families, and the princes of the tribes of Israel, and the captains of thousands, and of hundreds, and the overseers of the king’s possessions promised,
6
So chief and commissioner, commander and captain and overseer, promised to do their part;
7
Dederuntque in opera domus Dei auri talenta quinque millia, et solidos decem millia: argenti talenta decem millia, et æris talenta decem et octo millia: ferri quoque centum millia talentorum.
7
And they gave for the works of the house of the Lord, of gold, five thousand talents, and ten thousand solids: of silver ten thousand talents: and of brass eighteen thousand talents: and of iron a hundred thousand talents.
7
and their gift to God’s house was five thousand talents of gold, and ten thousand gold pieces, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand of bronze, and a hundred thousand of iron;
8
8
And all they that had stones, gave them to the treasures of the house of the Lord, by the hand of Jahiel the Gersonite.
8
others, who had precious stones in their possession, gave these in, through Jaziel the Gersonite, to the temple treasury.
9
9
And the people rejoiced, when they promised their offerings willingly: because they offered them to the Lord with all their heart: and David the king rejoiced also with a great joy.
9
Great was the rejoicing of the people that day, as promise after promise was made, so generously they offered what they had to the Lord; and greatly might David himself rejoice.
10
10
And he blessed the Lord before all the multitude, and he said: Blessed art thou, O Lord the God of Israel, our father from eternity to eternity.
10
Then, before all the people, he blessed the Lord’s name thus: Blessed art thou, O Lord, the God of our father Israel, from the beginning to the end of time.
11
11
Thine, O Lord, is magnificence, and power, and glory, and victory: and to thee is praise: for all that is in heaven, and in earth, is thine: thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art above all princes.
11
Thine, Lord, the magnificence, thine the power, splendour and glory and majesty are thine; to thee all that is in heaven, all that is on earth, belongs, to thee the kingdom, of all princes thou art overlord.
12
In manu tua virtus et potentia: in manu tua magnitudo, et imperium omnium.
12
Thine are riches, and thine is glory, thou hast dominion over all, in thy hand is power and might: in thy hand greatness, and the empire of all things.
12
Riches and honour come from thee; all things obey thy will; from thee power comes and dominion; only thy hand exalts, only thy hand makes strong.
13
Nunc igitur Deus noster, confitemur tibi, et laudamus nomen tuum inclytum.
13
Now therefore our God we give thanks to thee, and we praise thy glorious name.
13
To thee, then, our God, we pay homage this day, to thy glorious name bring renown.
14
14
Who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to promise thee all these things? all things are thine: and we have given thee what we received of thy hand.
14
That I, that this people of mine, should have the means to make thee such promises! All things belong to thee; all that thou hast from us is thy own gift;
15
15
For we are sojourners before thee, and strangers, as were all our fathers. Our days upon earth are as a shadow, and there is no stay.
15
as thou seest us, we are exiles and wanderers, no less than our fathers were; our days on earth pass like a shadow, and there is no abiding here.
16
16
O Lord our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee a house for thy holy name, is from thy hand, and all things are thine.
16
O Lord our God, all this store we have in readiness, for the building of a shrine to thy name, comes from thy hands; all things are thine.
17
17
I know my God that thou provest hearts, and lovest simplicity, wherefore I also in the simplicity of my heart, have joyfully offered all these things: and I have seen with great joy thy people, which are here present, offer thee their offerings.
17
My God, thou readest our hearts, I know it well, and it is the honest heart thou lovest. With honesty of intent I have made all these offerings gladly, and gladly have I seen all that are here assembled make their gifts to thee.
18
Domine Deus Abraham, et Isaac, et Israël patrum nostrorum, custodi in æternum hanc voluntatem cordis eorum, et semper in venerationem tui mens ista permaneat.
18
O Lord God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Israel our fathers, keep for ever this will of their heart, and let this mind remain always for the worship of thee.
18
O Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, keep this will of theirs for ever unchangeable; still be that mind theirs, a mind set on thy worship.
19
19
And give to Solomon my son a perfect heart, that he may keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy ceremonies, and do all things: and build the house, for which I have provided the charges.
19
And oh, to my son Solomon give integrity of heart; command and decree and observance of thine may he hold ever in honour, and ever perform; be it his to build the temple for which I have made provision.
20
20
And David commanded all the assembly: Bless ye the Lord our God. And all the assembly blessed the Lord the God of their fathers: and they bowed themselves and worshipped God, and then the king.
20
Then David would have the whole assembly bless the Lord’s name, and bless it they did, the name of the Lord God of their fathers; and so made reverence, to God first and then to the king.
21
Immolaveruntque victimas Domino: et obtulerunt holocausta die sequenti, tauros mille, arietes mille, agnos mille cum libaminibus suis, et universo ritu abundantissime in omnem Israël.
21
And they sacrificed victims to the Lord: and they offered holocausts the next day, a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, a thousand lambs, with their libations, and with every thing prescribed most abundantly for all Israel.
21
Victims, too, they slaughtered in sacrifice to the Lord; on the day following they offered in burnt-sacrifice a thousand bulls, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with due libations made, and with a sacrificial banquet in which the whole of Israel shared to their heart’s content.
22
22
And they ate, and drank before the Lord that day with great joy. And they anointed the second time Solomon the son of David. And they anointed him to the Lord to be prince, and Sadoc to be high priest.
22
So ate they and drank that day, keeping high festival in the Lord’s presence, and anointed Solomon to be their prince, Sadoc to be their priest, in the Lord’s service.
23
23
And Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king instead of David his father, and he pleased all: and all Israel obeyed him.
23
Thus Solomon took his seat, instead of his father David, upon the throne the Lord had appointed; winning favour and obedience from all;
24
24
And all the princes, and men of power, and all the sons of king David gave their hand, and were subject to Solomon the king.
24
not one of the chiefs and rulers, not one of the royal princes themselves, but did homage and accepted Solomon as king.
25
Magnificavit ergo Dominus Salomonem super omnem Israël: et dedit illi gloriam regni, qualem nullus habuit ante eum rex Israël.
25
And the Lord magnified Solomon over all Israel: and gave him the glory of a reign, such as no king of Israel had before him.
25
High pre-eminence the Lord gave him over the whole people, and such royal majesty as never yet king had in Israel.
26
Igitur David filius Isai regnavit super universum Israël.
26
So David the son of Isai reigned over all Israel.
26
So reigned David the son of Jesse over the whole of Israel,
27
Et dies quibus regnavit super Israël, fuerunt quadraginta anni: in Hebron regnavit septem annis, et in Jerusalem annis triginta tribus.
27
And the days that he reigned over Israel, were forty years: in Hebron he reigned seven years, and in Jerusalem three and thirty years.
27
for forty years’ space, seven at Hebron and thirty-three at Jerusalem.
28
28
And he died in a good age, full of days, and riches, and glory. And Solomon his son reigned in his stead.
28
And he died grown old in comfort, neither length of days nor riches nor honours wanting to him, and with his son Solomon to reign as his heir.
29
29
Now the acts of king David first and last are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer:
29
All his deeds, first and last, stand recorded by the seer Samuel, and the prophet Nathan, and Gad the man of visions;
30
universique regni ejus, et fortitudinis, et temporum quæ transierunt sub eo, sive in Israël, sive in cunctis regnis terrarum.
30
And of all his reign, and his valour, and of the times that passed under him, either in Israel, or in all the kingdoms of the countries.
30
the history of his reign, and the greatness of his reign, and the times that passed during his reign, in Israel and in all the kingdoms of the world.
