Chapter 11

Vulgate><Douay-Rheims><Knox Bible
1
Athalia vero mater Ochoziæ, videns mortuum filium suum, surrexit, et interfecit omne semen regium.
1
And Athalia the mother of Ochozias seeing that her son was dead, arose, and slew all the royal seed.
1
Upon the death of Ochozias, his mother Athalia put all the princes of the royal house to death,
2
2
But Josaba the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ochozias, took Joas the son of Ochozias, and stole him from among the king’s sons that were slain, out of the bedchamber with his nurse: and hid him from the face of Athalia, so that he was not slain.
2
except Ochozias’ son Joas, who was saved by his aunt Josaba, daughter to king Joram. When the princes were slain, she stole him away, with his nurse, out of the bed-room, and kept him in hiding so that Athalia could not make away with him.
3
Eratque cum ea sex annis clam in domo Domini: porro Athalia regnavit super terram.
3
And he was with her six years hid in the house of the Lord. And Athalia reigned over the land.
3
For six whole years she kept him by her secretly in the Lord’s house, while Athalia governed the country as queen.
4
4
And in the seventh year Joiada sent, and taking the centurions and the soldiers, brought them in to him into the temple of the Lord, and made a covenant with them: and taking an oath of them in the house of the Lord, shewed them the king’s son:
4
In the seventh year, Joiada sent for the commanders of the army and the royal bodyguard, took them into the temple and there made a compact with them, with the Lord’s own house to be witness of their oath; then he shewed them the young prince.
5
5
And he commanded them, saying: This is the thing that you must do:
5
And with that, he gave them their directions.
6
6
Let a third part of you go in on the sabbath, and keep the watch of the king’s house. And let a third part be at the gate of Sur: and let a third part be at the gate behind the dwelling of the shieldbearers: and you shall keep the watch of the house of Messa.
6
A third of your number, this sabbath day, will be keeping guard over the palace; some will be at the Sur gate, some at the gate by the armourers’ lodging, and you have to guard, too, the house of Messa.
7
Duæ vero partes e vobis, omnes egredientes sabbato, custodiant excubias domus Domini circa regem.
7
But let two parts of you, all that go forth on the sabbath, keep the watch of the house of the Lord about the king.
7
The other two thirds, that are relieved of duty that day, must come and keep guard over the king’s person, in the Lord’s house.
8
8
And you shall compass him round about, having weapons in your hands: and if any man shall enter the precinct of the temple, let him be slain: and you shall be with the king coming in and going out.
8
Hedge him about well, with your swords drawn; do not let anyone enter the temple precincts with his life; wherever the king goes, attend him closely.
9
9
And the centurions did according to all things that Joiada the priest had commanded them: and taking every one their men, that went in on the sabbath, with them that went out on the sabbath, came to Joiada the priest.
9
All the directions which the high priest Joiada gave them these commanders faithfully carried out; mustered their men, alike those who mounted guard and those who were relieved of duty on the sabbath, and presented themselves before Joiada,
10
Qui dedit eis hastas et arma regis David, quæ erant in domo Domini.
10
And he gave them the spears, and the arms of king David, which were in the house of the Lord.
10
who supplied them with the spears and other weapons king David had bequeathed to the Lord’s house;
11
Et steterunt singuli habentes arma in manu sua, a parte templi dextera usque ad partem sinistram altaris et ædis, circum regem.
11
And they stood having every one their weapons in their hands, from the right side of the temple, unto the left side of the altar, and of the temple, about the king.
11
to right and to left of altar and temple stood armed men ready to protect the king.
12
Produxitque filium regis, et posuit super eum diadema et testimonium: feceruntque eum regem, et unxerunt: et plaudentes manu, dixerunt: Vivat rex.
12
And he brought forth the king’s son, and put the diadem upon him, and the testimony: and they made him king, and anointed him: and clapping their hands they said, God save the king.
12
Then he brought the young prince out, and gave the royal crown and a copy of the law into his keeping. So was he crowned and anointed, while all clapped their hands and cried aloud, Long live the king!
13
13
And Athalia heard the noise of the people running: and going in to the people into the temple of the Lord,
13
Meanwhile, the stir which the soldiers made in going about their errand reached the ears of Athalia; and she made her way into the temple, there where all the crowds were gathered,
14
vidit regem stantem super tribunal juxta morem, et cantores, et tubas prope eum, omnemque populum terræ lætantem, et canentem tubis: et scidit vestimenta sua, clamavitque: Conjuratio, conjuratio.
14
She saw the king standing upon a tribunal, as the manner was, and the singers, and the trumpets near him, and all the people of the land rejoicing, and sounding the trumpets: and she rent her garments, and cried: A conspiracy, a conspiracy.
14
to find the king standing on a dais, as the king should, with singers and trumpeters at his side, while all the folk rejoiced, and the trumpets sounded. Well might she rend her clothes, and cry out, Treason, treason!
15
15
But Joiada commanded the centurions that were over the army, and said to them: Have her forth without the precinct of the temple, and whosoever shall follow her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest had said: Let her not be slain in the temple of the Lord.
15
Thereupon Joiada gave word to the commanders of the army that she must be taken out beyond the temple precincts, and if anyone tried to follow, he should be put to the sword; she must not be slain in the Lord’s house, he told them.
16
16
And they laid hands on her: and thrust her out by the way by which the horses go in, by the palace, and she was slain there.
16
So they made her prisoner, and as she passed along the horse-way that leads to the palace, she was slain.
17
17
And Joiada made a covenant between the Lord, and the king, and the people, that they should be the people of the Lord, and between the king and the people.
17
After this, Joiada would have a covenant made, that bound king and people to the Lord, as the Lord’s own people; bound king and people to one another.
18
Ingressusque est omnis populus terræ templum Baal, et destruxerunt aras ejus, et imagines contriverunt valide: Mathan quoque sacerdotem Baal occiderunt coram altari. Et posuit sacerdos custodias in domo Domini.
18
And all the people of the land went into the temple of Baal, and broke down his altars, and his images they broke in pieces thoroughly: they slew also Mathan the priest of Baal before the altar. And the priest set guards in the house of the Lord.
18
And the whole populace went into Baal’s temple, where they pulled down his altars and broke his images for good and all; they killed Mathan, too, Baal’s priest, there at the altar. Then the high priest set guards over the Lord’s temple,
19
19
And he took the centurions, and the bands of the Cerethi and the Phelethi, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king from the house of the Lord: and they came by the way of the gate of the shieldbearers into the palace, and he sat on the throne of the kings.
19
and presently he summoned the officers of the guard, with the Cerethite and Phelethite auxiliaries, and the whole populace with them; and together they brought the king back from the Lord’s house, by way of the armourers’ gate, into the palace, and he took his seat on the royal throne.
20
20
And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet: but Athalia was slain with the sword in the king’s house.
20
All through the land were great rejoicings, and the city had rest, now that Athalia lay dead, there in the palace.
21
Septemque annorum erat Joas, cum regnare cœpisset.
21
Now Joas was seven years old, when he began to reign.
21
Thus Joas came to his throne, a boy of seven years.
