1
Let there be a trumpet in thy throat like an eagle upon the house of the Lord: because they have transgressed my covenant, and have violated my law.
1
1
The trumpet to thy mouth! Eagle’s wings threatening the Lord’s domain! Conscious of faith forsworn, of my law defied,
2
They shall call upon me: O my God, we, Israel, know thee.
2
Me invocabunt: Deus meus, cognovimus te Israël.
2
to me Israel cries out, My God! cries out, We acknowledge thee!
3
Israel hath cast off the thing that is good, the enemy shall pursue him.
3
Projecit Israël bonum: inimicus persequetur eum.
3
Estranged, poor Israel, from the good that was his, and the enemy pressing hard upon him.
4
They have reigned, but not by me: they have been princes, and I knew not: of their silver, and their gold they have made idols to themselves, that they might perish.
4
4
Kings a many, and with no warrant from me; princes a many, that were none of my choosing; idols a many, of their own gold and silver minted; here is cause enough for their undoing.
5
Thy calf, O Samaria, is cast off, my wrath is kindled against them. How long will they be incapable of being cleansed?
5
Projectus est vitulus tuus, Samaria; iratus est furor meus in eos. Usquequo non poterunt emundari?
5
Cast calf, Samaria, is yonder calf of thine; for this burning affront, it shall be long ere thou canst find acquittal.
6
For itself also is the invention of Israel: a workman made it, and it is no god: for the calf of Samaria shall be turned to spiders’ webs.
6
6
Israel gave birth to it, this calf of Samaria, that came of man’s fashioning, and god is none; it shall be beaten fine as filigree.
7
For they shall sow wind, and reap a whirlwind, there is no standing stalk in it, the bud shall yield no meal; and if it should yield, strangers shall eat it.
7
7
Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind; empty stook is empty bin, and here if grain is any, alien folk shall have the eating of it!
8
Israel is swallowed up: now is he become among the nations like an unclean vessel.
8
Devoratus est Israël; nunc factus est in nationibus quasi vas immundum.
8
Poor Israel, already engulfed, the heathen all around making a despised tool of him!
9
For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath given gifts to his lovers.
9
Quia ipsi ascenderunt ad Assur, onager solitarius sibi; Ephraim munera dederunt amatoribus.
9
Lone as wild ass in the desert, to Assyria he betakes himself; if mate he would, he must pay for his dalliance.
10
But even though they shall have hired the nations, now will I gather them together: and they shall rest a while from the burden of the king, and the princes.
10
10
Well, hire they mercenaries where they will, they shall be cooped up in their own land none the less, and have respite from the exactions of king and nobles both.
11
Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin: altars are become to him unto sin.
11
11
So many the altars Ephraim has, and they shall increase his guilt, none of them but shall increase his guilt;
12
I shall write to him my manifold laws, which have been accounted as foreign.
12
Scribam ei multiplices leges meas, quæ velut alienæ computatæ sunt.
12
so many the laws I gave him, and all alike went unrecognized.
13
They shall offer victims, they shall sacrifice flesh, and shall eat it, and the Lord will not receive them: now will he remember their iniquity, and will visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.
13
13
Appointed sacrifice they still offer, flesh of the sacrifice still eat, but the Lord will have none of it; no more their guilt shall go unrecorded, their sins unpunished; Egypt once again for them!
14
And Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and hath built temples: and Juda hath built many fenced cities: and I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the houses thereof.
14
14
The God that made them forgotten, Israel builds shrine and Juda stronghold still; but the fire I am kindling shall fall upon Juda’s cities, shall devour them, citadel and all.
