Vulgate><Knox Bible><Douay-Rheims
1
1
When the ark had been brought into the city, they set it up in the midst of the tabernacle which David had spread out for it, and brought burnt-sacrifices and welcome-offerings into the Lord’s presence there.
1
So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent, which David had pitched for it: and they offered holocausts, and peace offerings before God.
2
Cumque complesset David offerens holocausta et pacifica, benedixit populo in nomine Domini.
2
And David, when his offering was done, blessed the people in the Lord’s name,
2
And when David had made an end of offering holocausts, and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord.
3
3
and gave to every Israelite, man or woman, a roll of bread and a piece of roast beef and a flour cake fried in oil.
3
And he divided to all and every one, both men and women, a loaf of bread, and a piece of roasted beef, and flour fried with oil.
4
4
Then he arranged that the Levites should serve by courses before the Lord’s ark, by courses, too, should bear record of his great deeds, and honour the Lord God of Israel with hymns of praise.
4
And he appointed Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord, and to remember his works, and to glorify, and praise the Lord God of Israel.
5
5
Asaph came first of all, and Zacharias second; then Jahiel, Semiramoth, Jehiel, Mathathias, Eliab, Banaias and Obededom. Harp and zither should be Jehiel’s province, Asaph should make the cymbals echo again;
5
Asaph the chief, and next after him Zacharias: moreover Jahiel, and Semiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mathathias, and Eliab, and Banaias, and Obededom: and Jehiel over the instruments of psaltery, and harps: and Asaph sounded with cymbals:
6
Banaiam vero et Jaziel sacerdotes canere tuba jugiter coram arca fœderis Domini.
6
Banaias and Jaziel, that were priests, should ever be in attendance on the Lord’s ark to sound the trumpet there.
6
But Banaias, and Jaziel the priests, to sound the trumpet continually before the ark of the covenant of the Lord.
7
7
It was then that David gave Asaph and his brethren their first lesson in offering thanks to the Lord.
7
In that day David made Asaph the chief to give praise to the Lord with his brethren.
8
Confitemini Domino, et invocate nomen ejus: notas facite in populis adinventiones ejus.
8
Praise the Lord, and call upon his name; tell the story of his doings for all the nations to hear;
8
Praise ye the Lord, and call upon his name: make known his doings among the nations.
9
9
greet him with song and psalm, recount his acts of miracle.
9
Sing to him, yea, sing praises to him: and relate all his wondrous works.
10
Laudate nomen sanctum ejus: lætetur cor quærentium Dominum.
10
Triumph in that holy name; let every heart that longs for the Lord rejoice.
10
Praise ye his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice, that seek the Lord.
11
Quærite Dominum, et virtutem ejus: quærite faciem ejus semper.
11
To the Lord, to the Lord’s strength, have recourse; evermore court his presence.
11
Seek ye the Lord, and his power: seek ye his face evermore.
12
Recordamini mirabilium ejus quæ fecit; signorum illius, et judiciorum oris ejus,
12
Remember the marvellous acts he did, his miracles, his sentences of doom;
12
Remember his wonderful works, which he hath done: his signs, and the judgments of his mouth.
13
semen Israël servi ejus, filii Jacob electi ejus.
13
are you not the posterity of Israel, his own servant, sons of that Jacob on whom his choice fell?
13
O ye seed of Israel his servants, ye children of Jacob his chosen.
14
Ipse Dominus Deus noster: in universa terra judicia ejus.
14
And he, the Lord, is our own God, wide though his writ runs through all the world.
14
He is the Lord our God: his judgments are in all the earth.
15
Recordamini in sempiternum pacti ejus: sermonis quem præcepit in mille generationes,
15
Keep in everlasting memory that covenant of his, that promise which a thousand generations might not cancel.
15
Remember for ever his covenant: the word, which he commanded to a thousand generations.
16
16
He gave Abraham a promise, bound himself to Isaac by an oath;
16
The covenant which he made with Abraham: and his oath to Isaac.
17
Et constituit illud Jacob in præceptum, et Israël in pactum sempiternum,
17
by that law Jacob should live, his Israel, engaged to him by an eternal covenant.
17
And he appointed the same to Jacob for a precept: and to Israel for an everlasting covenant:
18
dicens: Tibi dabo terram Chanaan, funiculum hæreditatis vestræ:
18
To thee, he said, I will give the land of Chanaan, as the portion which thou and thine must one day inherit.
18
Saying: To thee will I give the land of Chanaan: the lot of your inheritance.
19
19
So few they were in number, only a handful, living there as strangers!
19
When they were but a small number: very few and sojourners in it.
20
20
And ever they passed on from country to country, the guests of king or people;
20
And they passed from nation to nation: and from a kingdom to another people.
21
21
but he suffered none to harm them; to kings themselves the warning came,
21
He suffered no man to do them wrong: and reproved kings for their sake.
22
Nolite tangere christos meos, et in prophetis meis nolite malignari.
22
Lay no hand on them, never hurt them, servants anointed and true spokesmen of mine.
22
Touch not my anointed: and do no evil to my prophets.
23
Cantate Domino omnis terra; annuntiate ex die in diem salutare ejus:
23
In the Lord’s honour, let the whole earth make melody; never cease bearing record of his power to save.
23
Sing ye to the Lord, all the earth: shew forth from day to day his salvation.
24
narrate in gentibus gloriam ejus; in cunctis populis mirabilia ejus.
24
Publish his glory among the heathen, his wonderful acts for all the world to hear.
24
Declare his glory among the Gentiles: his wonders among all people.
25
Quia magnus Dominus, et laudabilis nimis, et horribilis super omnes deos.
25
How great is the Lord, how worthy of honour! What other god is to be feared as he?
25
For the Lord is great and exceedingly to be praised: and he is to be feared above all gods.
26
26
They are but false gods the heathen call divine; the Lord, not they, made the heavens.
26
For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens.
27
Confessio et magnificentia coram eo: fortitudo et gaudium in loco ejus.
27
Honour and beauty wait on his presence; worship and magnificence are the attendants of his shrine.
27
Praise and magnificence are before him: strength and joy in his place.
28
Afferte Domino, familiæ populorum: afferte Domino gloriam et imperium.
28
Lands of the heathen, make your offering to the Lord, an offering to the Lord of glory and praise,
28
Bring ye to the Lord, O ye families of the nations: bring ye to the Lord glory and empire.
29
Date Domino gloriam; nomini ejus levate sacrificium, et venite in conspectu ejus: et adorate Dominum in decore sancto.
29
an offering of glory to the Lord’s name; bring sacrifice, come into his presence; with reverent grace worship the Lord.
29
Give to the Lord glory to his name, bring up sacrifice, and come ye in his sight: and adore the Lord in holy becomingness.
30
Commoveatur a facie ejus omnis terra: ipse enim fundavit orbem immobilem.
30
Before the Lord let the whole earth bow in awe; he has built the earth on foundations immovable.
30
Let all the earth be moved at his presence: for he hath founded the world immoveable.
31
Lætentur cæli, et exultet terra, et dicant in nationibus: Dominus regnavit.
31
Rejoice, heaven, and let the earth be glad; tell the heathen, The Lord is king now.
31
Let the heavens rejoice, and the earth be glad: and let them say among the nations: The Lord hath reigned.
32
32
Let the sea, and all the sea contains, give thunderous applause; smiling the fields, and all the burden they bear;
32
Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the fields rejoice, and all things that are in them.
33
Tunc laudabunt ligna saltus coram Domino: quia venit judicare terram.
33
no tree in the forest but will sing for joy to greet its Lord’s coming. He comes to judge the earth.
33
Then shall the trees of the wood give praise before the Lord: because he is come to judge the earth.
34
Confitemini Domino, quoniam bonus: quoniam in æternum misericordia ejus.
34
Praise the Lord, the Lord is gracious; his mercy endures for ever.
34
Give ye glory to the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
35
35
Cry we to God, our deliverer, Deliver us now, gather us again in safety, scattered as we are among the heathen, to praise thy holy name, to triumph in thy renown.
35
And say ye: Save us, O God our saviour: and gather us together, and deliver us from the nations, that we may give glory to thy holy name, and may rejoice in singing thy praises.
36
Benedictus Dominus Deus Israël, ab æterno usque in æternum. Et dicat omnis populo: Amen, et hymnum Domino.
36
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from all eternity to all eternity; let all the people cry, Amen, hymning the Lord.
36
Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel from eternity to eternity: and let all the people say Amen, and a hymn to God.
37
37
So he left Asaph and his brethren there, with the ark that bears witness of the Lord’s covenant, to attend it by turns on their appointed days.
37
So he left there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, Asaph and his brethren to minister in the presence of the ark continually day by day, and in their courses.
38
Porro Obededom, et fratres ejus sexaginta octo: et Obededom filium Idithun, et Hosa, constituit janitores;
38
Obededom and his brethren, sixty-eight of them …. And he made Obededom, son of Idithun, and Hosa door-keepers.
38
And Obededom, with his brethren sixty-eight: and Obededom the son of Idithun, and Hosa he appointed to be porters.
39
39
Sadoc and the other priests, his brethren, were left with the tabernacle, at the hill-sanctuary of Gabaon,
39
And Sadoc the priest, and his brethren priests, before the tabernacle of the Lord in the high place, which was in Gabaon.
40
40
ever to offer the Lord victims on the altar of burnt-sacrifice, morning and evening; such was the charge the Lord had laid on Israel.
40
That they should offer holocausts to the Lord upon the altar of holocausts continually, morning and evening, according to all that is written in the law of the Lord, which he commanded Israel.
41
41
And with Sadoc were Heman and Idithun, and others of less name, chosen to give the Lord thanks for his everlasting mercy;
41
And after him Heman, and Idithun, and the rest that were chosen, every one by his name to give praise to the Lord: because his mercy endureth for ever.
42
42
it was for Heman and Idithun to sound the trumpet and beat the cymbals at the divine music, and Idithun’s sons he made door-keepers.
42
And Heman and Idithun sounded the trumpet, and played on the cymbals, and all kinds of musical instruments to sing praises to God: and the sons of Idithun he made porters.
43
43
And so the people dispersed to their homes, and David himself went back to bless his own household.
43
And all the people returned to their houses: and David to bless also his own house.
