1 In the second year of Joas son of Joachaz, king of Israel, reigned Amasias son of Joas king of Juda. |
1 In anno secundo Joas filii Joachaz regis Israël, regnavit Amasias filius Joas regis Juda. |
1 It was in the second year of Joas, son of Joachaz, king of Israel, that the throne of Joas, king of Juda, passed to his son Amasias. |
2 He was five and twenty years old when he began to reign: and nine and twenty years he reigned in Jerusalem: the name of his mother was Joadan of Jerusalem. |
2 This Amasias was twenty-five years old when he came to the throne, and his reign at Jerusalem lasted twenty-nine years; his mother’s name was Joadan, a woman of Jerusalem. |
3 And he did that which was right before the Lord, but yet not like David his father. He did according to all things that Joas his father did: |
Juxta omnia quæ fecit Joas pater suus, fecit: |
3 He obeyed the Lord’s will, not perfectly like his ancestor David, but in the manner of his father, king Joas; |
4 But this only, that he took not away the high places: for yet the people sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places. |
4 he too left the hill-shrines standing, so that men still sacrificed and burned incense on the mountain-tops. |
5 And when he had possession of the kingdom, he put his servants to death that had slain the king his father: |
5 Cumque obtinuisset regnum, percussit servos suos, qui interfecerant regem patrem suum: |
5 Once he was king, he put his father’s murderers to death, |
6 But the children of the murderers he did not put to death, according to that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, wherein the Lord commanded, saying: The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: but every man shall die for his own sins. |
6 but spared their children, in obedience to the law of Moses; whose terms are, A father must not die for his son’s guilt, or a son for his father’s; no guilt but his own shall bring a man to death. |
7 He slew of Edom in the valley of the Saltpits ten thousand men, and took the rock by war, and called the name thereof Jectehel, unto this day. |
7 Ipse percussit Edom in valle Salinarum decem millia, et apprehendit petram in prælio, vocavitque nomen ejus Jectehel usque in præsentem diem. |
7 He also fought a battle against the Edomites in the Valley of the Salt-mines, killing ten thousand of them, and gaining possession of a rock-fortress, which he called by its present name of Jectehel. |
8 Then Amasias sent messengers to Joas son of Joachaz, son of Jehu king of Israel, saying: Come let us see one another. |
8 Tunc misit Amasias nuntios ad Joas filium Joachaz filii Jehu regis Israël, dicens: Veni, et videamus nos. |
8 Then he sent a challenge to Joas, son of Joachaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel; Come, let us have a trial of strength! |
9 And Joas king of Israel sent again to Amasias king of Juda, saying: A thistle of Libanus sent to a cedar tree, which is in Libanus, saying: Give thy daughter to my son to wife. And the beasts of the forest, that are in Libanus, passed and trod down the thistle. |
9 And this answer Joas, king of Israel, sent to Amasias, king of Juda: Said Lebanon thistle to Lebanon cedar, Let my son have thy daughter to wife. But down came wild beasts from Lebanon forest, and all the thistle got was, he was trodden underfoot. |
10 Thou hast beaten and prevailed over Edom, and thy heart hath lifted thee up: be content with the glory, and sit at home: why provokest thou evil, that thou shouldst fall, and Juda with thee? |
10 Thou hast struck a shrewd blow at Edom, and now thy heart is puffed up with pride; keep thyself at home, content with the renown thou hast, do not invite disaster, to thy own and Juda’s ruin. |
11 But Amasias did not rest satisfied. So Joas king of Israel went up, and he and Amasias king of Juda saw one another in Bethsames a town in Juda. |
11 But Amasias would have his way, so these two kings, Joas of Israel and Amasias of Juda, met at a town in Juda called Bethsames; |
12 And Juda was put to the worst before Israel, and they fled every man to their dwellings. |
12 Percussusque est Juda coram Israël, et fugerunt unusquisque in tabernacula sua. |
12 and there the men of Juda were routed by the Israelites, and scattered to their homes in flight. |
13 But Joas king of Israel took Amasias, king of Juda the son of Joas, the son of Ochozias, in Bethsames, and brought him into Jerusalem: and he broke down the wall of Jerusalem, from the gate of Ephraim to the gate of the corner, four hundred cubits. |
13 Amasiam vero regem Juda, filium Joas filii Ochoziæ, cepit Joas rex Israël in Bethsames, et adduxit eum in Jerusalem: et interrupit murum Jerusalem, a porta Ephraim usque ad portam anguli, quadringentis cubitis. |
13 Thus Amasias, son of Joas, son of Ochozias, King of Juda, was captured by Joas king of Israel at Bethsames, and taken back to his own city of Jerusalem; where Joas made a gap in the walls four hundred cubits long, from the gate of Ephraim to the Corner gate, |
14 And he took all the gold, and silver, and all the vessels, that were found in the house of the Lord, and in the king’s treasures, and hostages, and returned to Samaria. |
14 carried off all the gold and silver and other ware that was to be found in the temple or palace, took hostages besides, and made his way back to Samaria. |
15 But the rest of the acts of Joas, which he did, and his valour, wherewith he fought against Amasias king of Juda, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel? |
15 Reliqua autem verborum Joas quæ fecit, et fortitudo ejus qua pugnavit contra Amasiam regem Juda, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël? |
15 (What else Joas did, and the record of his great victory over Amasias king of Juda, is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Israel. |
16 And Joas slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria, with the kings of Israel: and Jeroboam his son reigned in his stead. |
16 He was laid to rest with his fathers, with Samaria for his burying-place, and the throne passed to his son Jeroboam. ) |
17 And Amasias the son of Joas king of Juda lived, after the death of Joas son of Joachaz king of Israel fifteen years. |
17 Vixit autem Amasias filius Joas rex Juda postquam mortuus est Joas filius Joachaz regis Israël, quindecim annis. |
17 Amasias, son of the Joas that was king of Juda, survived Joachaz’s son, Joas of Israel, by fifteen years; |
18 And the rest of the acts of Amasias, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Juda? |
18 Reliqua autem sermonum Amasiæ, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Juda? |
18 what else he did is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Juda. |
19 Now they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem: and he fled to Lachis. And they sent after him to Lachis, and killed him there. |
19 Factaque est contra eum conjuratio in Jerusalem: at ille fugit in Lachis. Miseruntque post eum in Lachis, et interfecerunt eum ibi: |
19 A conspiracy was made against him at Jerusalem, and when he escaped to Lachis they sent in pursuit of him and put him to death there; |
20 And they brought him away upon horses, and he was buried in Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David. |
20 afterwards his body was brought back to Jerusalem in a horse-litter, and there buried with his fathers in David’s Keep. |
21 And all the people of Juda took Azarias, who was sixteen years old, and made him king instead of his father Amasias. |
21 Thereupon the whole people of Juda chose Azarias, a boy sixteen years old, to succeed his father Amasias; |
22 He built Elath, and restored it to Juda, after that the king slept with his fathers. |
22 he it was carried out the designs of his dead father by fortifying the harbour of Aelath and restoring it to the possession of Juda. |
23 In the fifteenth year of Amasias son of Joas king of Juda, reigned Jeroboam the son of Joas king of Israel in Samaria, one and forty years: |
23 Anno quintodecimo Amasiæ filii Joas regis Juda, regnavit Jeroboam filius Joas regis Israël in Samaria, quadraginta et uno anno. |
23 It was in the fifteenth year of Amasias, son of king Joas of Juda, that Jeroboam, son of king Joas of Israel, began his reign in Samaria; it lasted forty-one years. |
24 And he did that which was evil before the Lord. He departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nabat, who made Israel to sin. |
24 He defied the Lord’s will, and would not forgo the sins of Nabat’s son Jeroboam, that taught Israel to sin. |
25 He restored the borders of Israel from the entrance of Emath, unto the sea of the wilderness, according to the word of the Lord the God of Israel, which he spoke by his servant Jonas the son of Amathi, the prophet, who was of Geth, which is in Opher. |
25 He it was restored to Israel its old territory, all the way from the pass of Emath in the North to the Dead Sea. So the Lord had foretold through a servant of his, the prophet Jonas, son of Amathi, from Geth-Opher: |
26 For the Lord saw the affliction of Israel that it was exceeding bitter, and that they were consumed even to them that were shut up in prison, and the lowest persons, and that there was no one to help Israel. |
26 the Lord has not been blind to the affliction, past all endurance, that has fallen on Israel, bondman and free man alike perishing with none to succour them. |
27 And the Lord did not say that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joas. |
27 So the Lord resolved not to let Israel’s name vanish from the world; he would grant them redress through Jeroboam the son of Joas. |
28 But the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did, and his valour, wherewith he fought, and how he restored Damascus, and Emath to Juda in Israel, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel? |
28 What else Jeroboam did, all his history, and the record of his great deeds, how he fought and how he restored to Israel all of Damascus and Emath that once belonged to the Jewish kingdom, is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Israel. |
29 And Jeroboam slept with his fathers the kings of Israel, and Zacharias his son reigned in his stead. |
29 So Jeroboam was laid to rest with his fathers, the royal race of Israel, and his throne passed to his son Zacharias. |
