Learn to carry yourselves as the children of the Lord your God. Do not dis-figure yourselves or shave your heads bare when a man dies,

Filii estote Domini Dei vestri: non vos incidetis, nec facietis calvitium super mortuo:

Be ye children of the Lord your God: you shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness for the dead;

you, a people set apart for the Lord, chosen out of all nations on earth to be his very own.

quoniam populus sanctus es Domino Deo tuo, et te elegit ut sis ei in populum peculiarem de cunctis gentibus, quæ sunt super terram.

Because thou art a holy people to the Lord thy God: and he chose thee to be his peculiar people of all nations that are upon the earth.

Do not eat any food which brings defilement.

Ne comedatis quæ immunda sunt.

Eat not the things that are unclean.

You may eat such beasts as the ox, the sheep, and the goat,

Hoc est animal quod comedere debetis: bovem, et ovem, et capram,

These are the beasts that you shall eat, the ox, and the sheep, and the goat,

red deer and roe, gazelle and wild goat, addax and oryx and zemer;

cervum et capream, bubalum, tragelaphum, pygargum, orygem, camelopardalum.

The hart and the roe, the buffle, the chamois, the pygarg, the wild goat, the camelopardalus.

any creature which has cloven hoofs and chews the cud.

Omne animal, quod in duas partes findit ungulam, et ruminat, comedetis.

Every beast that divideth the hoof in two parts, and cheweth the cud, you shall eat.

You must not eat those which have the hoofs single, even though they chew the cud; the camel and the hare and the rock-rabbit, and all other ruminants that do not divide the hoof, you must count unclean.

De his autem, quæ ruminant, et ungulam non findunt, comedere non debetis, ut camelum, leporem, chœrogryllum: hæc, quia ruminant et non dividunt ungulam, immunda erunt vobis.

But of them that chew the cud, but divide not the hoof, you shall not eat, such as the camel, the hare, and the cherogril: because they chew the cud, but divide not the hoof, they shall be unclean to you.

And the sow, which has cloven hoofs but does not chew the cud, is also unclean; you must not eat the flesh of such beasts, or touch their carcases.

Sus quoque, quoniam dividat ungulam et non ruminat, immunda erit. Carnibus eorum non vescemini, et cadavera non tangetis.

The swine also, because it divideth the hoof, but cheweth not the cud, shall be unclean, their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch.

Among the creatures that live in water, you may eat those that have fins and scales;

Hæc comedetis ex omnibus quæ morantur in aquis: quæ habent pinnulas et squamas, comedite:

These shall you eat of all that abide in the waters: All that have fins and scales, you shall eat.

whatever lacks fins and scales is unclean, not for your eating.

quæ absque pinnulis et squamis sunt, ne comedatis, quia immunda sunt.

Such as are without fins and scales, you shall not eat, because they are unclean.

There are birds you may eat without fear of defilement;

Omnes aves mundas comedite.

All birds that are clean you shall eat.

others which you must avoid as unclean, eagle and griffon and osprey,

Immundas ne comedatis: aquilam scilicet, et gryphem, et haliæetum,

The unclean eat not: to wit, the eagle, and the grype, and the osprey,

kite and falcon and vulture and all else of their kind,

ixion et vulturem ac milvum juxta genus suum:

The ringtail, and the vulture, and the kite according to their kind:

anything that belongs to the raven tribe,

et omne corvini generis,

And all of the raven’s kind:

ostrich, night-owl, sea-mew, and hawks of every kind,

et struthionem, ac noctuam, et larum, atque accipitrem juxta genus suum:

And the ostrich, and the owl, and the larus, and the hawk according to its kind:

stork, swan, ibis,

herodium ac cygnum, et ibin,

The heron, and the swan, and the stork,

cormorant, coot, night-jar

ac mergulum, porphyrionem, et nycticoracem,

And the cormorant, the porphirion, and the night crow,

and pelican, with curlews of every kind; the hoopoe, besides, and the bat.

onocrotalum, et charadrium, singula in genere suo: upupam quoque et vespertilionem.

The bittern, and the charadrion, every one in their kind: the hoop also and the bat.

Creeping things that have wings are unclean, and must not be eaten.

Et omne quod reptat et pennulas habet, immundum erit, et non comedetur.

Every thing that creepeth, and hath little wings, shall be unclean, and shall not be eaten.

Any meat that is not unclean may be used for food,

Omne quod mundum est, comedite.

All that is clean, you shall eat.

except what has fallen dead; make a present of this to some neighbour, not of Israel’s race, or sell it to an alien, it is not for your eating, a people set apart for the Lord your God.Seething a kid in its dam’s milk is a rite forbidden thee.

Quidquid autem morticinum est, ne vescamini ex eo. Peregrino, qui intra portas tuas est, da ut comedat, aut vende ei: quia tu populus sanctus Domini Dei tui es. Non coques hædum in lacte matris suæ.

But whatsoever is dead of itself, eat not thereof. Give it to the stranger, that is within thy gates, to eat, or sell it to him: because thou art the holy people of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not boil a kid in the milk of his dam.

Every year, thou wilt set apart a tenth of all the crops thy land yields,

Decimam partem separabis de cunctis fructibus tuis qui nascuntur in terra per annos singulos,

Every year thou shalt set aside the tithes of all thy fruits that the earth bringeth forth,

and come to the place the Lord thy God has chosen for the sanctuary of his name, to feast on it there in his presence; a tenth part of thy corn and wine and oil, and the first-fruits of thy herds and flocks; so thou wilt learn to fear the Lord thy God continually.

et comedes in conspectu Domini Dei tui in loco quem elegerit, ut in eo nomen illius invocetur, decimam frumenti tui, et vini, et olei, et primogenita de armentis et ovibus tuis: ut discas timere Dominum Deum tuum omni tempore.

And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God in the place which he shall choose, that his name may be called upon therein, the tithe of thy corn, and thy wine, and thy oil, and the firstborn of thy herds and thy sheep: that thou mayst learn to fear the Lord thy God at all times.

But perhaps the journey will be too long, the place which he has chosen too far distant, and the load too great, so bountiful has the Lord thy God been to thee.

Cum autem longior fuerit via, et locus quem elegerit Dominus Deus tuus, tibique benedixerit, nec potueris ad eum hæc cuncta portare,

But when the way and the place which the Lord thy God shall choose, are far off, and he hath blessed thee, and thou canst not carry all these things thither,

Why then, sell all this tithe of thine, and bring the proceeds of the sale with thee to the place he has chosen.

vendes omnia, et in pretium rediges, portabisque manu tua, et proficisceris ad locum quem elegerit Dominus Deus tuus:

Thou shalt sell them all, and turn them into money, and shalt carry it in thy hand, and shalt go to the place which the Lord shall choose:

With this money thou mayst buy all thou wilt, oxen and sheep, wine and mead, to thy heart’s content; and on these thou shalt feast in the presence of the Lord, thou and all thy household making good cheer together,

et emes ex eadem pecunia quidquid tibi placuerit, sive ex armentis, sive ex ovibus, vinum quoque et siceram, et omne quod desiderat anima tua: et comedes coram Domino Deo tuo, et epulaberis tu et domus tua:

And thou shalt buy with the same money whatsoever pleaseth thee, either of the herds or of sheep, wine also and strong drink, and all that thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God, and shalt feast, thou and thy house:

and the Levite, too, that dwells in thy city; do not neglect the Levite, that has no part or lot such as thou hast.

et Levites qui intra portas tuas est, cave ne derelinquas eum, quia non habet aliam partem in possessione tua.

And the Levite that is within thy gates, beware thou forsake him not, because he hath no other part in thy possession.

Every third year, thou wilt set apart a fresh tithe of all the revenue thou then hast, and lay it by at home,

Anno tertio separabis aliam decimam ex omnibus quæ nascuntur tibi eo tempore, et repones intra januas tuas.

The third year thou shalt separate another tithe of all things that grow to thee at that time, and shalt lay it up within thy gates.

so that the Levite, who has no part or lot such as thou hast, and the wanderer and the orphan and the widow that are thy fellow-citizens, may eat and have their fill. So, to whatever employment thou dost turn thy hand, the blessing of the Lord thy God shall be with thee.

Venietque Levites qui aliam non habet partem nec possessionem tecum, et peregrinus ac pupillus et vidua, qui intra portas tuas sunt, et comedent et saturabuntur: ut benedicat tibi Dominus Deus tuus in cunctis operibus manuum tuarum quæ feceris.

And the Levite that hath no other part nor possession with thee, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow, that are within thy gates, shall come and shall eat and be filled: that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the works of thy hands that thou shalt do.
