Non videbis bovem fratris tui, aut ovem errantem, et præteribis: sed reduces fratri tuo,

If thou seest ox or sheep that belongs to thy fellow-Israelite going astray, do not hurry past; take it back to its owner,

Thou shalt not pass by if thou seest thy brother’s ox, or his sheep go astray: but thou shalt bring them back to thy brother.
2
etiamsi non est propinquus frater tuus, nec nosti eum: duces in domum tuam, et erunt apud te quamdiu quærat ea frater tuus, et recipiat.
2
if he is a neighbour of thine, and known to thee. If not, shelter it thyself till he enquires, and restore it.

And if thy brother be not nigh, or thou know him not: thou shalt bring them to thy house, and they shall be with thee until thy brother seek them, and receive them.

Similiter facies de asino, et de vestimento, et de omni re fratris tui, quæ perierit: si inveneris eam, ne negligas quasi alienam.

And so with an ass or with a garment or any other lost thing that belongs to thy fellow-Israelite; do not leave them where thou findest them, as if it did not concern thee.

Thou shalt do in like manner with his ass, and with his raiment, and with every thing that is thy brother’s, which is lost: if thou find it, neglect it not as pertaining to another.

Si videris asinum fratris tui aut bovem cecidisse in via, non despicies, sed sublevabis cum eo.
4
If his ox or his ass falls down by the wayside, do not hurry past; help him to lift it up again.

If thou see thy brother’s ass or his ox to be fallen down in the way, thou shalt not slight it, but shalt lift it up with him.

Non induetur mulier veste virili, nec vir utetur veste feminea: abominabilis enim apud Deum est qui facit hæc.

A woman must not wear man’s clothes, or a man go clad like a woman; all such doings are hateful to God.
5
A woman shall not be clothed with man’s apparel, neither shall a man use woman’s apparel: for he that doeth these things is abominable before God.

Si ambulans per viam, in arbore vel in terra nidum avis inveneris, et matrem pullis vel ovis desuper incubantem: non tenebis eam cum filiis,

If thou findest in thy path, in a tree or on the ground, a mother bird sitting on her nestlings or her eggs, do not carry her off with her young;

If thou find as thou walkest by the way, a bird’s nest in a tree, or on the ground, and the dam sitting upon the young or upon the eggs: thou shalt not take her with her young:
7
sed abire patieris, captos tenens filios: ut bene sit tibi, et longo vivas tempore.
7
let her go, and be content with her brood; so shalt thou prosper and live long.

But shalt let her go, keeping the young which thou hast caught: that it may be well with thee, and thou mayst live a long time.

Cum ædificaveris domum novam, facies murum tecti per circuitum: ne effundatur sanguis in domo tua, et sis reus labente alio, et in præceps ruente.
8
When thou buildest a new house, make a parapet about its roof; if anyone should lose his footing and fall to the ground, thy house is polluted with blood, and the guilt is thine.

When thou buildest a new house, thou shalt make a battlement to the roof round about: lest blood be shed in thy house, and thou be guilty, if any one slip, and fall down headlong.

Non seres vineam tuam altero semine: ne et sementis quam sevisti, et quæ nascuntur ex vinea, pariter sanctificentur.
9
Do not sow thy vineyard with a second kind of seed, or both the crop thou hast sown and the fruit of thy vineyard are forfeit.

Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with divers seeds: lest both the seed which thou hast sown, and the fruit of the vineyard, be sanctified together.

Non arabis in bove simul et asino.
10
Do not plough with an ox and an ass together;
10
Thou shalt not plough with an ox and an ass together.

Non indueris vestimento, quod ex lana linoque contextum est.
11
or wear garments woven of linen and wool together.
11
Thou shalt not wear a garment that is woven of woollen and linen together.
12
Funiculos in fimbriis facies per quatuor angulos pallii tui, quo operieris.
12
Thou shalt wear tasselled strings at the four corners of the garment thou wearest.
12
Thou shalt make strings in the hem at the four corners of thy cloak, wherewith thou shalt be covered.
13
Si duxerit vir uxorem, et postea odio habuerit eam,
13
It may be that a husband will grow weary of the wife he has taken,
13
If a man marry a wife, and afterwards hate her,
14
quæsieritque occasiones quibus dimittat eam, objiciens ei nomen pessimum, et dixerit: Uxorem hanc accepi, et ingressus ad eam non inveni virginem:
14
and look about him for pretexts to put her away. Such a man will perhaps fasten an ill name on her, by complaining that when he bedded her she was found to be no maid.

And seek occasions to put her away, laying to her charge a very ill name, and say: I took this woman to wife, and going in to her, I found her not a virgin:
15
tollent eam pater et mater ejus, et ferent secum signa virginitatis ejus ad seniores urbis qui in porta sunt:

Thereupon her father and mother must bring her before the elders at the city gate, and the proofs of her maidenhood with her;

Her father and mother shall take her, and shall bring with them the tokens of her virginity to the ancients of the city that are in the gate:
16
et dicet pater: Filiam meam dedi huic uxorem: quam quia odit,
16
and the father will say, I gave this man my daughter in marriage, and now he is weary of her;
16
And the father shall say: I gave my daughter unto this man to wife: and because he hateth her,
17
imponit ei nomen pessimum, ut dicat: Non inveni filiam tuam virginem: et ecce hæc sunt signa virginitatis filiæ meæ. Expandent vestimentum coram senioribus civitatis:
17
that is why he would fasten an ill name upon her by telling me he found my daughter no maid. And here are the proofs of my daughter’s maidenhood. With that, he will spread the cloth out in sight of the elders;

He layeth to her charge a very ill name, so as to say: I found not thy daughter a virgin: and behold these are the tokens of my daughter’s virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the ancients of the city:
18
apprehendentque senes urbis illius virum, et verberabunt illum,
18
and these will lay hold of the man and beat him,
18
And the ancients of that city shall take that man, and beat him,
19
condemnantes insuper centum siclis argenti, quos dabit patri puellæ, quoniam diffamavit nomen pessimum super virginem Israël: habebitque eam uxorem, et non poterit dimittere eam omnibus diebus vitæ suæ.

fining him, moreover, a hundred sicles of silver, for fastening an ill name on a maid of Israel. He must pay them to the woman’s father, and must keep her as his wife; as long as he lives he may not put her away.

Condemning him besides in a hundred sicles of silver, which he shall give to the damsel’s father, because he hath defamed by a very ill name a virgin of Israel: and he shall have her to wife, and may not put her away all the days of his life.
20
Quod si verum est quod objicit, et non est in puella inventa virginitas,
20
If the charge he made was true, and the woman was found indeed to be no maid,
20
But if what he charged her with be true, and virginity be not found in the damsel:
21
ejicient eam extra fores domus patris sui, et lapidibus obruent viri civitatis illius, et morietur: quoniam fecit nefas in Israël, ut fornicaretur in domo patris sui: et auferes malum de medio tui.

then the citizens must cast her out of her father’s door and stone her to death; this was a foul deed done in a woman of Israel, to play the wanton in her own father’s house; rid thy company of such a plague as that.

They shall cast her out of the doors of her father’s house, and the men of the city shall stone her to death, and she shall die: because she hath done a wicked thing in Israel, to play the whore in her father’s house: and thou shalt take away the evil out of the midst of thee.
22
Si dormierit vir cum uxore alterius, uterque morietur, id est, adulter et adultera: et auferes malum de Israël.
22
If a man beds with another’s wife, both must die, adulterer and adulteress, and so Israel is rid of a plague.
22
If a man lie with another man’s wife, they shall both die, that is to say, the adulterer and the adulteress: and thou shalt take away the evil out of Israel.
23
Si puellam virginem desponderit vir, et invenerit eam aliquis in civitate, et concubuerit cum ea,
23
A man has fallen in with a maid betrothed to some other, and mated with her. Was it done in the city?
23
If a man have espoused a damsel that is a virgin, and some one find her in the city, and lie with her,
24
educes utrumque ad portam civitatis illius, et lapidibus obruentur: puella, quia non clamavit, cum esset in civitate: vir, quia humiliavit uxorem proximi sui: et auferes malum de medio tui.

Then both must be taken to the city gate and stoned to death; she, because she made no outcry, with all the city close at hand, he, because he robbed his neighbour’s wife of her maidenhood.

Thou shalt bring them both out to the gate of that city, and they shall be stoned: the damsel, because she cried not out, being in the city: the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour’s wife. And thou shalt take away the evil from the midst of thee.
25
Sin autem in agro repererit vir puellam, quæ desponsata est, et apprehendens concubuerit cum ea, ipse morietur solus:
25
Or did the man fall in with this betrothed maid in the countryside, and force her to grant his will? Then he alone must die; no harm shall befall the woman.
25
But if a man find a damsel that is betrothed, in the field, and taking hold of her, lie with her, he alone shall die:
26
puella nihil patietur, nec est rea mortis: quoniam sicut latro consurgit contra fratrem suum, et occidit animam ejus, ita et puella perpessa est.

She has not deserved death; she was defenceless as a man suddenly attacked and killed by a brigand;

The damsel shall suffer nothing, neither is she guilty of death: for as a robber riseth against his brother, and taketh away his life, so also did the damsel suffer:
27
Sola erat in agro: clamavit, et nullus affuit qui liberaret eam.
27
cry as she might, far out in the countryside, no one could come to her aid.
27
She was alone in the field: she cried, and there was no man to help her.
28
Si invenerit vir puellam virginem, quæ non habet sponsum, et apprehendens concubuerit cum illa, et res ad judicium venerit:
28
If a man falls in with a maid still unbetrothed, and forces her to do his will, and the matter is brought to judgement,

If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, who is not espoused, and taking her, lie with her, and the matter come to judgment:
29
dabit qui dormivit cum ea, patri puellæ quinquaginta siclos argenti, et habebit eam uxorem, quia humiliavit illam: non poterit dimittere eam cunctis diebus vitæ suæ.

the man who mated with her must pay her fifty sicles of silver, and keep her as his wife, now that he has robbed her of her maidenhood; as long as he lives he may not put her away.
29
He that lay with her shall give to the father of the maid fifty sicles of silver, and shall have her to wife, because he hath humbled her: he may not put her away all the days of his life.
30
Non accipiet homo uxorem patris sui, nec revelabit operimentum ejus.
30
A man must not take his father’s wife, and come between his own father’s sheets.
30
No man shall take his father’s wife, nor remove his covering.
