Vulgate><Douay-Rheims><Knox Bible
1
1
In the ninth year of Sedecias king of Juda, in the tenth month, came Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and all his army to Jerusalem, and they besieged it.
1
Sedecias had been reigning for eight years and ten months in Juda when Nabu-chodonosor king of Babylon led his armies to the siege of Jerusalem;
2
2
And in the eleventh year of Sedecias, in the fourth month, the fifth day of the month, the city was opened.
2
in the eleventh year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, the city wall was breached.
3
3
And all the princes of the king of Babylon came in, and sat in the middle gate: Neregel, Sereser, Semegarnabu, Sarsachim, Rabsares, Neregel, Serezer, Rebmag, and all the rest of the princes of the king of Babylon.
3
In they marched, Neregel, Sereser, Semegarnabu, Sarsachim, Rabsares, (Neregel, Sereser), and Rebmag, and all the king of Babylon’s other chieftains, and occupied the central gate.
4
4
And when Sedecias the king of Juda and all the men of war saw them, they fled: and they went forth in the night out of the city by the way of the king’s garden, and by the gate that was between the two walls, and they went out to the way of the desert.
4
Sedecias king of Juda and all his warriors fled at their approach, leaving the city at dead of night by way of the royal garden and the gate between the two walls; it was the desert road they took when they left it.
5
5
But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after them: and they took Sedecias in the plain of the desert of Jericho, and when they had taken him, they brought him to Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon to Reblatha, which is in the land of Emath: and he gave judgment upon him.
5
The Chaldaean army went in pursuit, and overtook Sedecias in the open plain of Jericho; captured him, and brought him before Nabuchodonosor at Reblatha, in the Emath country; and there sentence was pronounced on him.
6
Et occidit rex Babylonis filios Sedeciæ in Reblatha, in oculis ejus: et omnes nobiles Juda occidit rex Babylonis.
6
And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Sedecias, in Reblatha, before his eyes: and the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Juda.
6
Slain by the king of Babylon were all his sons, there in their father’s sight; slain by the king of Babylon were all the nobles of Juda;
7
7
He also put out the eyes of Sedecias: and bound him with fetters, to be carried to Babylon.
7
and as for Sedecias himself, his eyes were put out, and he was carried off, loaded with chains, to Babylon.
8
Domum quoque regis et domum vulgi succenderunt Chaldæi igni, et murum Jerusalem subverterunt.
8
And the Chaldeans burnt the king’s house, and the houses of the people with fire, and they threw down the wall of Jerusalem.
8
King’s palace and poor man’s house the Chaldaeans burnt to the ground, and threw down the walls of Jerusalem in ruins.
9
9
And Nabuzardan the general of the army carried away captive to Babylon the remnant of the people that remained in the city, and the fugitives that had gone over to him, and the rest of the people that remained.
9
All the rest who survived, defenders and deserters alike, were carried off by Nabuzardan, the captain of the royal bodyguard, to Babylon;
10
Et de plebe pauperum, qui nihil penitus habebant, dimisit Nabuzardan magister militum in terra Juda, et dedit eis vineas et cisternas in die illa.
10
But Nabuzardan the general left some of the poor people that had nothing at all, in the land of Juda, and he gave them vineyards, and cisterns at that time.
10
he left none except the poorest of the inhabitants, landless men, in Juda, who found themselves enriched, that day, with vineyards and cisterns of their own.
11
11
Now Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had given charge to Nabuzardan the general concerning Jeremias, saying:
11
This Nabuzardan, captain of the royal bodyguard had orders from king Nabuchodonosor about Jeremias;
12
12
Take him, and set thy eyes upon him, and do him no harm: but as he hath a mind, so do with him.
12
Take him under thy loving charge, said he, and let him have what cheer he will.
13
Misit ergo Nabuzardan princeps militiæ, et Nabusezban, et Rabsares, et Neregel, et Sereser, et Rebmag, et omnes optimates regis Babylonis,
13
Therefore Nabuzardan the general sent, and Nabusezban, and Rabsares, and Neregel, and Sereser, and Rebmag, and all the nobles of the king of Babylon,
13
So here were Nabuzardan, captain of the royal bodyguard, and Nabusezban, and Rabsares, and Neregel, and Sereser, and Rebmag, and all the king of Babylon’s great chieftains,
14
14
Sent, and took Jeremias out of the court of the prison, and committed him to Godolias the son of Ahicam the son of Saphan, that he might go home, and dwell among the people.
14
sending out to free Jeremias from his prison in the courtyard. And they entrusted him to the care of Godolias, son of Ahicam; with him Jeremias should dwell, and make his home among his own people.
15
15
But the word of the Lord came to Jeremias, when he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying: Go, and tell Abdemelech the Ethiopian, saying:
15
While he was still in the courtyard prison, Jeremias had been entrusted with a message from the Lord for the Ethiopian, Abdemelech:
16
Vade, et dic Abdemelech Æthiopi, dicens: Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israël: Ecce ego inducam sermones meos super civitatem hanc in malum, et non in bonum, et erunt in conspectu tuo in die illa.
16
Thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Behold I will bring my words upon this city unto evil, and not unto good: and they shall be accomplished in thy sight in that day.
16
All my doom against this city, says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, I mean to fulfil; ban it is and not blessing, and thou shalt live to see it;
17
17
And I will deliver thee in that day, saith the Lord: and thou shalt not be given into the hands of the men whom thou fearest:
17
but to thee I will grant safety, the Lord says. Never shall dreaded foe have the mastery,
18
18
But delivering, I will deliver thee, and thou shalt not fall by the sword: but thy life shall be saved for thee, because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord.
18
when I am there to deliver thee; thou art marked out for safety, that didst put thy confidence in me, the Lord says.
