1 And now Moses, with the elders of Israel, gave the people this charge: Hold fast all the commandments I have been enjoining on you this day. |
1 And Moses with the ancients of Israel commanded the people, saying: Keep every commandment that I command you this day. |
2 Cumque transieritis Jordanem in terram, quam Dominus Deus tuus dabit tibi, eriges ingentes lapides, et calce lævigabis eos, |
2 When you cross the Jordan and reach the land which the Lord means to give you, raise up great stones, and smooth them over with plaster; |
2 And when you are passed over the Jordan into the land which the Lord thy God will give thee, thou shalt set up great stones, and shalt plaster them over with plaster, |
3 ut possis in eis scribere omnia verba legis hujus, Jordane transmisso: ut introëas terram, quam Dominus Deus tuus dabit tibi, terram lacte et melle manantem, sicut juravit patribus tuis. |
3 on these, now that Jordan is passed, and the land I promised, all milk and honey, is yours, the whole tenour of this law must be written down. |
3 That thou mayst write on them all the words of this law, when thou art passed over the Jordan: that thou mayst enter into the land which the Lord thy God will give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, as he swore to thy fathers. |
4 Quando ergo transieritis Jordanem, erigite lapides, quos ego hodie præcipio vobis in monte Hebal, et lævigabis eos calce: |
4 These plastered slabs, of which I am now speaking, must be set up on mount Hebal, on the further bank of Jordan; |
4 Therefore when you are passed over the Jordan, set up the stones which I command you this day, in mount Hebal, and thou shalt plaster them with plaster: |
5 and there an altar must be built to the Lord your God, out of stones which no iron has ever touched, |
5 And thou shalt build there an altar to the Lord thy God, of stones which iron hath not touched, |
6 stones still rough and unpolished. On this, offer the Lord burnt-sacrifice, |
6 And of stones not fashioned nor polished: and thou shalt offer upon it holocausts to the Lord thy God: |
7 et immolabis hostias pacificas, comedesque ibi, et epulaberis coram Domino Deo tuo. |
7 and slay victims for a welcome-offering; eat and make good cheer in the Lord’s presence; |
7 And shalt immolate peace victims, and eat there, and feast before the Lord thy God. |
8 Et scribes super lapides omnia verba legis hujus plane et lucide. |
8 and then write on the slabs, clearly and distinctly, the whole tenour of this law. |
8 And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law plainly and clearly. |
9 Then Moses, with the priests of Levi’s race, said to the whole of Israel: Give heed, Israel, and listen; this day the Lord thy God has made thee his people. |
9 And Moses and the priests of the race of Levi said to all Israel: Attend, and hear, O Israel: This day thou art made the people of the Lord thy God. |
10 Obey his word, and live by all the commandments and decrees I am giving thee. |
10 Thou shalt hear his voice, and do the commandments and justices which I command thee. |
11 Præcepitque Moyses populo in die illo, dicens: |
11 And at the same time Moses gave the people this message: |
11 And Moses commanded the people in that day, saying: |
12 Hi stabunt ad benedicendum populo super montem Garizim, Jordane transmisso: Simeon, Levi, Judas, Issachar, Joseph, et Benjamin. |
12 Jordan once crossed, six tribes must stand on mount Garizim for the blessing of the people, Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin, |
12 These shall stand upon mount Garizim to bless the people, when you are passed the Jordan: Simeon, Levi, Juda, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. |
13 and six tribes must stand opposite, on mount Ebal, for the cursing, Ruben, Gad, Aser, Zabulon, Dan and Nephthali. |
13 And over against them shall stand on mount Hebal to curse: Ruben, Gad, and Aser, and Zabulon, Dan, and Nephtali. |
14 And now the Levites shall cry this proclamation aloud to the whole of Israel, |
14 And the Levites shall pronounce, and say to all the men of Israel with a loud voice: |
15 Cursed be the man who makes graven or molten image, a thing detestable to the Lord, however skilled its workmanship, however secret its hiding-place. And here all the people shall answer, Amen. |
