1 The word that came to Jeremias from the Lord in the days of Joakim the son of Josias king of Juda, saying: |
1 In the reign of Josias’ son Joachim, word came to Jeremias from the Lord, |
2 Go to the house of the Rechabites: and speak to them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers of the treasures, and thou shalt give them wine to drink. |
2 Go, make thyself acquainted with the men of Rechab’s clan; I would have thee entertain them in one of the treasury rooms at the temple, and there set wine before them. |
3 And I took Jezonias the son of Jeremias the son of Habsanias, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites. |
3 Et assumpsi Jezoniam filium Jeremiæ filii Habsaniæ, et fratres ejus, et omnes filios ejus, et universam domum Rechabitarum, |
3 So Jezonias, son of Jeremias, son of Habsanias was my guest, with his brethren and his sons and the whole Rechabite clan; |
4 And I brought them into the house of the Lord, to the treasure house of the sons of Hanan, the son of Jegedelias the man of God, which was by the treasure house of the princes, above the treasure of Maasias the son of Sellum, who was keeper of the entry. |
4 et introduxi eos in domum Domini, ad gazophylacium filiorum Hanan filii Jegedeliæ hominis Dei, quod erat juxta gazophylacium principum, super thesaurum Maasiæ filii Sellum, qui erat custos vestibuli: |
4 into the temple I brought them, to the apartment of Hanan’s sons, that come down from God’s servant Jegedelias. It was next to the apartment of the door-keeper, Maasias the son of Sellum. |
5 And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups: and I said to them: Drink ye wine. |
5 Here I set a bowl and goblet of wine before the men of Rechab’s clan, and bade them drink, |
6 And they answered : We will not drink wine: because Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying: You shall drink no wine, neither you, nor your children, for ever: |
6 Qui responderunt Non bibemus vinum, quia Jonadab filius Rechab, pater noster, præcepit nobis, dicens: Non bibetis vinum, vos et filii vestri, usque in sempiternum: |
6 but drink wine they would not. Our father Jonadab, said they, the son of Rechab gave us a rule to live by. Wine neither we should drink, nor any son of ours in perpetuity; |
7 Neither shall ye build houses, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyards, nor have any: but you shall dwell in tents all your days, that you may live many days upon the face of the earth, in which you are strangers. |
7 no house build, no crops sow, no vineyard plant or possess; in tents we were to live all our days, and long those days should last in this land that was none of ours. |
8 Therefore we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all things that he commanded us: so as to drink no wine all our days: neither we, nor our wives, nor our sons, nor our daughters: |
8 As our father Jonadab son of Rechab bade us live, so live we, so our wives and sons and daughters live, drinking no wine at any time. |
9 Nor to build houses to dwell in, nor to have vineyard, or field, or seed: |
9 Houses we build none to dwell in, vineyards and fields and crops have none; |
10 But we have dwelt in tents, and have been obedient according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us. |
10 sed habitavimus in tabernaculis, et obedientes fuimus juxta omnia quæ præcepit nobis Jonadab pater noster. |
10 tent-dwellers we remain, true to every command of our father Jonadab; |
11 But when Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon came up to our land, we said: Come, let us go into Jerusalem from the face of the army of the Chaldeans, and from the face of the army of Syria: and we have remained in Jerusalem. |
11 Cum autem ascendisset Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis ad terram nostram, diximus: Venite, et ingrediamur Jerusalem a facie exercitus Chaldæorum, et a facie exercitus Syriæ: et mansimus in Jerusalem. |
11 it was only when king Nabuchodonosor of Babylon marched against us that we were fain to take shelter in Jerusalem from threats of Chaldaean and Syrian; that is why we make our abode in Jerusalem. |
12 And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias, saying: |
12 And now the Lord’s word came to Jeremias: |
13 Thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Go, and say to the men of Juda, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem: Will you not receive instruction, to obey my words, saith the Lord? |
13 A message from the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel! Go and tell all the men of Juda, all the citizens of Jerusalem. Great marvel it is, the Lord says, you are so unruly still, and will not heed my bidding. |
14 The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, by which he commanded his sons not to drink wine, have prevailed: and they have drunk none to this day, because they have obeyed the commandment of their father: but I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, and you have not obeyed me. |
14 Here is Jonadab son of Rechab will have his sons drink no wine, and his word holds; wine they drink none to this day, for love of their father’s rule; and I, that send word early to your doors, can win no obedience. |
15 And I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising early, and sending and saying: Return ye every man from his wicked way, and make your ways good: and follow not strange gods, nor worship them, and you shall dwell in the land, which I gave you and your fathers: and you have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened to me. |
15 Early I sent them to your doors, the prophets that were servants of mine, bidding you come back from your straying, and shape your thoughts anew; have recourse no longer to the worship of alien gods, if you would dwell securely in this land, my gift to you and to your fathers; but you gave me neither heed nor hearing. |
16 So the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have constantly kept the commandment of their father, which he commanded them: but this people hath not obeyed me. |
16 So loyal the Rechabites to the commands of their father Jonadab, and my people so disobedient! |
17 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Behold I will bring upon Juda, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them, because I have spoken to them, and they have not heard: I have called to them, and they have not answered me. |
17 I mean, then, says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to punish the citizens of Jerusalem for warnings unheeded, for calls refused, with all the punishments I have threatened. |
18 And Jeremias said to the house of the Rechabites: Thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and have kept all his precepts, and have done all that he commanded you: |
18 Domui autem Rechabitarum dixit Jeremias: Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israël: Pro eo quod obedistis præcepto Jonadab patris vestri, et custodistis omnia mandata ejus, et fecistis universa quæ præcepit vobis, |
18 To the clan of Rechab Jeremias gave this message from the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: For your obedience to your father Jonadab, for precept remembered and for duty done, |
19 Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: There shall not be wanting a man of the race of Jonadab the son of Rechab, standing before me for ever. |
19 propterea hæc dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israël: Non deficiet vir de stirpe Jonadab filii Rechab, stans in conspectu meo cunctis diebus. |
19 he, the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, promises that this line of Rechab and Jonadab, long as time lasts, shall never want a posterity to do him service. |
