Vulgate><Knox Bible><Douay-Rheims
1
Miserere nostri, Deus omnium, et respice nos, et ostende nobis lucem miserationum tuarum:
1
God of all men, have mercy on us; look down, and let us see the smile of thy favour.
1
Have mercy upon us, O God of all, and behold us, and shew us the light of thy mercies:
2
2
Teach them to fear thee, those other nations that have never looked to find thee; let them learn to recognize thee as the only God, and to acclaim thy wonders.
2
And send thy fear upon the nations, that have not sought after thee: that they may know that there is no God beside thee, and that they may shew forth thy wonders.
3
Alleva manum tuam super gentes alienas, ut videant potentiam tuam.
3
Lift up thy hand, to shew these aliens thy power;
3
Lift up thy hand over the strange nations, that they may see thy power.
4
Sicut enim in conspectu eorum sanctificatus es in nobis, sic in conspectu nostro magnificaberis in eis:
4
let us see them, as they have seen us, humbled before thee;
4
For as thou hast been sanctified in us in their sight, so thou shalt be magnified among them in our presence,
5
5
let them learn, as we have learnt, that there is no other God but thou.
5
That they may know thee, as we also have known thee, that there is no God beside thee, O Lord.
6
Innova signa, et immuta mirabilia.
6
Shew new marvels, and portents stranger still;
6
Renew thy signs, and work new miracles.
7
Glorifica manum et brachium dextrum.
7
win renown for that strength, that valiant arm of thine;
7
Glorify thy hand, and thy right arm.
8
Excita furorem, et effunde iram.
8
rouse thyself to vengeance, give thy anger free play;
8
Raise up indignation, and pour out wrath.
9
Tolle adversarium, et afflige inimicum.
9
away with the oppressors, down with thy enemies!
9
Take away the adversary, and crush the enemy.
10
10
Hasten on the time, do not forget thy purpose; make them acclaim thy wonders.
10
Hasten the time, and remember the end, that they may declare thy wonderful works.
11
11
Let none of them escape their doom, the oppressors of thy people; let there be a raging fire ready to devour them;
11
Let him that escapeth be consumed by the rage of the fire: and let them perish that oppress thy people.
12
Contere caput principum inimicorum, dicentium: Non est alius præter nos.
12
heavy let the blow fall on the heads of those tyrants, that no other power will recognize but their own.
12
Crush the head of the princes of the enemies that say: There is no other beside us.
13
13
Gather anew all the tribes of Jacob; be it theirs to know that thou alone art God, to acclaim thy wonders; make them thy loved possession as of old.
13
Gather together all the tribes of Jacob: that they may know that there is no God besides thee, and may declare thy great works: and thou shalt inherit them as from the beginning.
14
14
Have compassion on the people that is called by thy own name, on Israel, owned thy first-born;
14
Have mercy on thy people, upon whom thy name is invoked: and upon Israel, whom thou hast raised up to be thy firstborn.
15
Miserere civitati sanctificationis tuæ, Jerusalem, civitati requiei tuæ.
15
have compassion on Jerusalem, the city thou hast set apart for thy resting-place;
15
Have mercy on Jerusalem, the city which thou hast sanctified, the city of thy rest.
16
Reple Sion inenarrabilibus verbis tuis, et gloria tua populum tuum.
16
fill Sion’s walls, fill the hearts of thy people, with wonders beyond all telling come true, with thy glory made manifest.
16
Fill Sion with thy unspeakable words, and thy people with thy glory.
17
17
Vindicate the race that was from the first thy chosen; old prophecies uttered in thy name, at last fulfil;
17
Give testimony to them that are thy creatures from the beginning, and raise up the prophecies which the former prophets spoke in thy name.
18
Da mercedem sustinentibus te, ut prophetæ tui fideles inveniantur: et exaudi orationes servorum tuorum,
18
have we waited for thee to no purpose? Shall thy prophets be proved false? Listen to thy servants’ plea,
18
Reward them that patiently wait for thee, that thy prophets may be found faithful: and hear the prayers of thy servants,
19
19
that claim the blessing Aaron pronounced over thy people; guide us into the right path; let all the world know that thou art God, watching us eternally.
19
According to the blessing of Aaron over thy people, and direct us into the way of justice, and let all know that dwell upon the earth, that thou art God the beholder of all ages.
20
20
Take what food thou wilt, belly is content; yet meat and meat differ.
20
The belly will devour all meat, yet one is better than another.
21
Fauces contingunt cibum feræ, et cor sensatum verba mendacia.
21
The savour of venison only palate can reach; only wise heart can discern lying tongue.
21
The palate tasteth venison and the wise heart false speeches.
22
Cor pravum dabit tristitiam, et homo peritus resistet illi.
22
False heart breeds dismal thoughts; mind well schooled keeps them at bay.
22
A perverse heart will cause grief, and a man of experience will resist it.
23
23
Any woman is a mate for any man; yet maid and maid differ.
23
A woman will receive every man: yet one daughter is better than another.
24
Species mulieris exhilarat faciem viri sui, et super omnem concupiscentiam hominis superducit desiderium.
24
Fair wife, blithe husband; as no other lure, beauty draws us.
24
The beauty of a woman cheereth the countenance of her husband, and a man desireth nothing more.
25
25
What of her tongue? If that, too, has power to charm, if that is soft and gentle, never was man so blessed.
25
If she have a tongue that can cure, and likewise mitigate and shew mercy: her husband is not like other men.
26
26
Good wife won is life well begun; a comforter thou hast, of thy own breed, a stay to support thee.
26
He that possesseth a good wife, beginneth a possession: she is a help like to himself, and a pillar of rest.
27
27
No hedge, no garden; and if wife thou hast none, thou shalt wander homeless.
27
Where there is no hedge, the possession shall be spoiled: and where there is no wife, he mourneth that is in want.
28
28
Trust him never, that has not found a nest to dwell in, and does but lodge where night overtakes him, cut-purse that travels light from city to city.
28
Who will trust him that hath no rest, and that lodgeth wheresoever the night taketh him, as a robber well appointed, that skippeth from city to city.
