Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: | 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: | 1 And now the Lord said to Moses, |
Mense primo, prima die mensis, eriges tabernaculum testimonii, | 2 The first month, the first day of the month, thou shalt set up the tabernacle of the testimony, | 2 When the first day of the first month comes, set up the tabernacle that is to bear record of me, |
et pones in eo arcam, dimittesque ante illam velum: | 3 And shalt put the ark in it, and shalt let down the veil before it: | 3 and put the ark in it, and screen the ark with the veil. |
et illata mensa, pones super eam quæ rite præcepta sunt. Candelabrum stabit cum lucernis suis, | 4 And thou shalt bring in the table, and set upon it the things that are commanded according to the rite. The candlestick shall stand with its lamps, | 4 Then bring in the table, and set out due offerings there; the lamp-stand, too, must be in its place, with lamps on it, |
et altare aureum, in quo adoletur incensum, coram arca testimonii. Tentorium in introitu tabernaculi pones, | 5 And the altar of gold whereon the incense is burnt, before the ark of the testimony. Thou shalt put the hanging in the entry of the tabernacle, | 5 and the golden altar upon which incense is burnt, there before the ark that bears record of me. Stretch out the hanging at the entrance to the tabernacle, |
et ante illud altare holocausti: | 6 And before it the altar of holocaust: | 6 and set down before it the altar for burnt-sacrifice, |
labrum inter altare et tabernaculum, quod implebis aqua. | 7 The laver between the altar and the tabernacle, and thou shalt fill it with water. | 7 with the basin there, full of water, between altar and tabernacle; |
Circumdabisque atrium tentoriis, et ingressum ejus. | 8 And thou shalt encompass the court with hangings, and the entry thereof. | 8 and screen off the court and its entrance with the hangings. |
Et assumpto unctionis oleo unges tabernaculum cum vasis suis, ut sanctificentur: | 9 And thou shalt take the oil of unction and anoint the tabernacle with its vessels, that they may be sanctified: | 9 Then bring out the anointing-oil, and hallow by unction with it the tabernacle and its appurtenances; |
altare holocausti et omnia vasa ejus, | 10 The altar of holocaust and all its vessels: | 10 the altar for burnt-sacrifice and all that belongs to it, |
labrum cum basi sua: omnia unctionis oleo consecrabis, ut sint Sancta sanctorum. | 11 The laver with its foot: thou shalt consecrate all with the oil of unction, that they may be most holy. | 11 and the washing-basin with its stand; all must be consecrated with the anointing-oil, to be holiness itself. |
Applicabisque Aaron et filios ejus ad fores tabernaculi testimonii, et lotos aqua | 12 And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons to the door of the tabernacle of the testimony, and having washed them with water, | 12 Bring Aaron, too, and his sons to the doors of the tabernacle that bears record of me, and, when they have washed, |
indues sanctis vestibus, ut ministrent mihi, et unctio eorum in sacerdotium sempiternum proficiat. | 13 Thou shalt put on them the holy vestments, that they may minister to me, and that the unction of them may prosper to an everlasting priesthood. | 13 clothe them with the sacred vestments in which they are to minister to me, and anoint them to be my priests for ever. |
Fecitque Moyses omnia quæ præceperat Dominus. | 14 And Moses did all that the Lord had commanded. | 14 Moses did as the Lord bade him; |
Igitur mense primo anni secundi, prima die mensis, collocatum est tabernaculum. | 15 So in the first month of the second year, the first day of the month, the tabernacle was set up. | 15 and on the first day of the first month, in this second year of wandering, the tabernacle was set up. |
Erexitque Moyses illud, et posuit tabulas ac bases et vectes, statuitque columnas, | 16 And Moses reared it up, and placed the boards and the sockets and the bars, and set up the pillars, | 16 To set it up, Moses must first dispose the frames, with their sockets and poles, and erect the posts; |
et expandit tectum super tabernaculum, imposito desuper operimento, sicut Dominus imperaverat. | 17 And spread the roof over the tabernacle, putting over it a cover, as the Lord had commanded. | 17 then he spread the tapestry over the tabernacle, and covered it, as the Lord bade him, with the canopy. |
Posuit et testimonium in arca, subditis infra vectibus, et oraculum desuper. | 18 And he put the testimony in the ark, thrusting bars underneath, and the oracle above. | 18 He put the tablets of the law in the ark, and passed the poles through at the base of it, and fixed the throne above it. |
Cumque intulisset arcam in tabernaculum, appendit ante eam velum ut expleret Domini jussionem. | 19 And when he had brought the ark into the tabernacle, he drew the veil before it to fulfil the commandment of the Lord. | 19 Then, bringing the ark into the tabernacle, he spread the veil in front of it, in fulfilment of the Lord’s command. |
Posuit et mensam in tabernaculo testimonii ad plagam septentrionalem extra velum, | 20 And he set the table in the tabernacle of the testimony at the north side without the veil, | 20 In front of the veil, at the northern end of the tabernacle that bore record of the Lord, he put down the table, |
ordinatis coram propositionis panibus, sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi. | 21 Setting there in order the loaves of proposition, as the Lord had commanded Moses. | 21 and on it, as the Lord bade him, he set out the consecrated loaves. |
Posuit et candelabrum in tabernaculo testimonii e regione mensæ in parte australi, | 22 He set the candlestick also in the tabernacle of the testimony over against the table on the south side, | 22 On the south side of the tabernacle, opposite the table, he set up the lamp-stand, |
locatis per ordinem lucernis, juxta præceptum Domini. | 23 Placing the lamps in order, according to the precept of the Lord. | 23 with all its lamps in position as the Lord bade him. |
Posuit et altare aureum sub tecto testimonii contra velum, | 24 He set also the altar of gold under the roof of the testimony over against the veil, | 24 And before the veil, still under the tabernacle roof, he placed the golden altar, |
et adolevit super eo incensum aromatum, sicut jusserat Dominus Moysi. | 25 And burnt upon it the incense of spices, as the Lord had commanded Moses. | 25 on which, at the Lord’s command, he burnt incense made from spices. |
Posuit et tentorium in introitu tabernaculi testimonii, | 26 And he put also the hanging in the entry of the tabernacle of the testimony, | 26 And now he must hang the screen at the entrance of the tabernacle, |
et altare holocausti in vestibulo testimonii, offerens in eo holocaustum, et sacrificia, ut Dominus imperaverat. | 27 And the altar of holocaust in the entry of the testimony, offering the holocaust, and the sacrifices upon it, as the Lord had commanded. | 27 and by the door of the tabernacle must stand the altar for burnt-sacrifice, on which he offered the victims and sacrificial gifts which the Lord had prescribed. |
Labrum quoque statuit inter tabernaculum testimonii et altare, implens illud aqua. | 28 And he set the laver between the tabernacle of the testimony and the altar, filling it with water. | 28 He put the basin, too, between the tabernacle and the altar, filling it with water, |
Laveruntque Moyses et Aaron ac filii ejus manus suas et pedes, | 29 And Moses and Aaron, and his sons washed their hands and feet, | 29 so that Moses and Aaron and Aaron’s sons could wash their hands and feet |
cum ingrederentur tectum fœderis, et accederent ad altare, sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi. | 30 When they went into the tabernacle of the covenant, and went to the altar, as the Lord had commanded Moses. | 30 whenever they would enter the tabernacle that bore record of the covenant, or approach the altar, as the Lord had commanded him. |
Erexit et atrium per gyrum tabernaculi et altaris, ducto in introitu ejus tentorio. Postquam omnia perfecta sunt, | 31 He set up also the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, drawing the hanging in the entry thereof. After all things were perfected, | 31 He also set up the court round the tabernacle and the altar, and hung the screen at the entrance to it.When all was done, |
operuit nubes tabernaculum testimonii, et gloria Domini implevit illud. | 32 The cloud covered the tabernacle of the testimony, and the glory of the Lord filled it. | 32 a cloud covered the tabernacle, and it was filled with the brightness of the Lord’s presence; |
Nec poterat Moyses ingredi tectum fœderis, nube operiente omnia, et majestate Domini coruscante, quia cuncta nubes operuerat. | 33 Neither could Moses go into the tabernacle of the covenant, the cloud covering all things, and the majesty of the Lord shining, for the cloud had covered all. | 33 nor could Moses enter the tabernacle that bore record of the covenant, so thick the cloud that spread all about it, so radiant was the Lord’s majesty; all was wrapped in cloud. |
Siquando nubes tabernaculum deserebat, proficiscebantur filii Israël per turmas suas: | 34 If at any time the cloud removed from the tabernacle, the children of Israel went forward by their troops: | 34 Whenever the cloud lifted from the tabernacle, the Israelites would muster and set out on the march, |
si pendebat desuper, manebant in eodem loco. | 35 If it hung over, they remained in the same place. | 35 and while it hung there, they halted. |
Nubes quippe Domini incubabat per diem tabernaculo, et ignis in nocte, videntibus cunctis populis Israël per cunctas mansiones suas. | 36 For the cloud of the Lord hung over the tabernacle by day, and a fire by night, in the sight of all the children of Israel throughout all their mansions. | 36 The divine cloud by day, the divine fire by night, still brooded over the tabernacle for all Israel to see it, wherever they halted on their journey. |
