And Moses told the children of Israel all that the Lord had commanded him:

Narravitque Moyses filiis Israël omnia quæ ei Dominus imperarat.

So Moses told the Israelites what charge the Lord had given him.

And he said to the princes of the tribes of the children of Israel: This is the word that the Lord hath commanded:

Et locutus est ad principes tribuum filiorum Israël: Iste est sermo quem præcepit Dominus:

He also gave the chief men of Israel’s tribes this command from the Lord:

If any man make a vow to the Lord, or bind himself by an oath: he shall not make his word void but shall fulfil all that he promised.

Si quis virorum votum Domino voverit, aut se constrinxerit juramento: non faciet irritum verbum suum, sed omne quod promisit, implebit.

It may be, man or woman will take a vow, or an oath. If it be a man, he must in any case carry out what he promised, and not be false to his word.

If a woman vow any thing, and bind herself by an oath, being in her father’s house, and but yet a girl in age: if her father knew the vow that she hath promised, and the oath wherewith she hath bound her soul, and held his peace, she shall be bound by the vow:

Mulier si quippiam voverit, et se constrinxerit juramento, quæ est in domo patris sui, et in ætate adhuc puellari: si cognoverit pater votum quod pollicita est, et juramentum quo obligavit animam suam, et tacuerit, voti rea erit:

But if a woman has made a vow, or bound herself by an oath, it may be she is only a girl, living in her father’s house still. Did her father know that she had vowed or sworn, and make no protest? Then she is bound by her vow;

Whatsoever she promised and swore, she shall fulfil in deed.

quidquid pollicita est, et juravit, opere complebit.

she must fulfil what she bound herself by oath to fulfil.

But if her father, immediately as soon as he heard it, gainsaid it, both her vows and her oaths shall be void, neither shall she be bound to what she promised, because her father hath gainsaid it.

Sin autem statim ut audierit, contradixerit pater: et vota et juramenta ejus irrita erunt, nec obnoxia tenebitur sponsioni, eo quod contradixerit pater.

Did her father, as soon as he heard of it, refuse his consent? Then vow or oath are null and void; she cannot be held to her promise if her father did not consent to it.

If she have a husband, and shall vow any thing, and the word once going out of her mouth shall bind her soul by an oath:

Si maritum habuerit, et voverit aliquid, et semel de ore ejus verbum egrediens animam ejus obligaverit juramento:

It may be such a girl will marry, still under her vow, still bound by her youthful undertaking;

The day that her husband shall hear it, and not gainsay it, she shall be bound to the vow, and shall give whatsoever she promised.

quo die audierit vir, et non contradixerit, voti rea erit, reddetque quodcumque promiserat.

does her husband hear of it without protest? She must be held to her vow thenceforward; she must carry out what she promised.

But if as soon as he heareth he gainsay it, and make her promises and the words wherewith she had bound her soul of no effect: the Lord will forgive her.

Sin autem audiens statim contradixerit, et irritas fecerit pollicitationes ejus, verbaque quibus obstrinxerat animam suam, propitius erit ei Dominus.

Or does he refuse his consent upon hearing of it? Then he annuls this promise, this youthful undertaking of hers, and the Lord will not hold her guilty.

The widow, and she that is divorced, shall fulfil whatsoever they vow.

Vidua et repudiata quidquid voverint, reddent.

Or the woman may be a widow, or a wife divorced; she must then fulfil her promise.

If the wife in the house of her husband, hath bound herself by vow and by oath,

Uxor in domo viri cum se voto constrinxerit et juramento,

Or a wife already living under her husband’s roof, may take vow or oath;

If her husband hear, and hold his peace, and doth not disallow the promise, she shall accomplish whatsoever she had promised.

si audierit vir, et tacuerit, nec contradixerit sponsioni, reddet quodcumque promiserat.

is she bound to fulfil her promise? Yes, if he hears of it and makes no protest.

But if forthwith he gainsay it, she shall not be bound by the promise: because her husband gainsaid it, and the Lord will be merciful to her.

Sin autem extemplo contradixerit, non tenebitur promissionis rea: quia maritus contradixit, et Dominus ei propitius erit.

But if he immediately refuses his consent, she cannot be held to her undertaking; the Lord will not hold her guilty if her husband’s consent is refused.

If she vow and bind herself by oath, to afflict her soul by fasting, or abstinence from other things, it shall depend on the will of her husband, whether she shall do it, or not do it.

Si voverit, et juramento se constrinxerit, ut per jejunium, vel ceterarum rerum abstinentiam affligat animam suam, in arbitrio viri erit ut faciat, sive non faciat.

It may be a wife will bind herself by an oath, vowing to mortify herself by fasting or some other kind of abstinence; it is for her husband to decide whether she is to keep it or not.

But if the husband hearing it hold his peace, and defer the declaring his mind till another day: whatsoever she had vowed and promised, she shall fulfil: because immediately as he heard it, he held his peace.

Quod si audiens vir tacuerit, et in alteram diem distulerit sententiam, quidquid voverat atque promiserat, reddet: quia statim ut audivit, tacuit.

If he makes no protest on hearing of it, but waits till afterwards before making his decision, she must pay her vow, keep the promise she made; there was no protest from him when he heard of it.

But if he gainsay it after that he knew it, he shall bear her iniquity.

Sin autem contradixerit postquam rescivit, portabit ipse iniquitatem ejus.

If, after hearing of it, he refuses his consent, then it is he that will be held to account for her fault.

These are the laws which the Lord appointed to Moses between the husband and the wife, between the father and the daughter that is as yet but a girl in age, or that abideth in her father’s house.

Istæ sunt leges, quas constituit Dominus Moysi inter virum et uxorem, inter patrem et filiam, quæ in puellari adhuc ætate est, vel quæ manet in parentis domo.

Such are the rules the Lord gave Moses, to govern the conduct of husband and wife, or of a father and his daughter when she is a girl still living at home.
