1 These are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the Lord spoke to Moses in mount Sinai. |
1 Aaron and Moses had already sons to succeed them at the time when the Lord spoke to Moses on Sinai; |
2 Et hæc nomina filiorum Aaron: primogenitus ejus Nadab, deinde Abiu, et Eleazar, et Ithamar. |
2 And these the names of the sons of Aaron: his firstborn Nadab, then Abiu, and Eleazar, and Ithamar. |
2 and these were the names of Aaron’s sons, Nadab, his first-born, then Abiu, Eleazar and Ithamar. |
3 These the names of the sons of Aaron the priests that were anointed, and whose hands were filled and consecrated, to do the functions of priesthood. |
3 All these sons of Aaron were anointed priests, their hands enriched and consecrated for priestly duties, |
4 Now Nadab and Abiu died, without children, when they offered strange fire before the Lord, in the desert of Sinai: and Eleazar and Ithamar performed the priestly office in the presence of Aaron their father. |
4 but Nadab and Abiu, who offered unhallowed fire in the Lord’s presence, died there in the desert of Sinai without issue; it was only Eleazar and Ithamar that performed the duties of the priesthood now, under the eye of Aaron their father. |
5 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: |
5 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: |
5 And now the Lord gave Moses this command, |
6 Bring the tribe of Levi, and make them stand in the sight of Aaron the priest to minister to him, and let them watch, |
6 Dedicate the tribe of Levi to me, and bid them wait on the pleasure of Aaron, the high priest; doing him service and keeping watch, |
7 And observe whatsoever appertaineth to the service of the multitude before the tabernacle of the testimony, |
7 carrying out the duties that belong to public worship before the tabernacle, |
8 et custodiant vasa tabernaculi, servientes in ministerio ejus. |
8 And let them keep the vessels of the tabernacle, serving in the ministry thereof. |
8 keeping safe, too, the appurtenances of the tabernacle, and attending to its needs. |
9 Dabisque dono Levitas |
9 And thou shalt give the Levites for a gift, |
9 Thou shalt put the Levites at the disposal of |
10 To Aaron and to his sons, to whom they are delivered by the children of Israel. But thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons over the service of priesthood. The stranger that approacheth to minister, shall be put to death. |
10 Aaron and his sons, to whom the Israelites have assigned them; but it is to Aaron and his sons that thou wilt entrust the priestly office. No one else must minister there, on pain of death. |
11 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: |
11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: |
11 This, too, the Lord said to Moses, |
12 Ego tuli Levitas a filiis Israël pro omni primogenito, qui aperit vulvam in filiis Israël, eruntque Levitæ mei. |
12 I have taken the Levites from the children of Israel, for every firstborn that openeth the womb among the children of Israel, and the Levites shall be mine. |
12 Among all the sons of Israel, I have singled out the Levites to be my own, in lieu of those first-born Israelites that handsel the womb; |
Ego Dominus. |
13 For every firstborn is mine: since I struck the firstborn in the land of Egypt: I have sanctified to myself whatsoever is firstborn in Israel both of man and beast, they are mine: I am the Lord. |
13 all first-born things belong to me. Ever since I smote the first-born in the land of Egypt, I have claimed the eldest birth, whether of man or of beast, as forfeit; forfeit to me, the Lord. |
14 And the Lord spoke to Moses in the desert of Sinai, saying: |
14 And while they were still in the desert of Sinai, the Lord bade Moses |
15 Number the sons of Levi by the houses of their fathers and their families, every male from one month and upward. |
15 register the sons of Levi by their households and their families, all of them that were more than a month old. |
16 Numeravit Moyses, ut præceperat Dominus, |
16 Moses numbered them as the Lord had commanded. |
16 So Moses made a register, as the Lord had bidden him; |
17 And there were found sons of Levi by their names, Gerson and Caath and Merari. |
17 giving the names of Levi’s sons in their order, Gerson, Caath and Merari; |
18 Filii Gerson: Lebni et Semei. |
18 The sons of Gerson: Lebni and Semei. |
18 then the sons of Gerson, Lebni and Semei, |
19 Filii Caath: Amram et Jesaar, Hebron et Oziel. |
19 The sons of Caath: Amram, and Jesaar, Hebron and Oziel: |
19 the sons of Caath, Amram, Jessar, Hebron and Oziel |
20 Filii Merari: Moholi et Musi. |
20 The sons of Merari: Moholi and Musi. |
20 and the sons of Merari, Moholi and Musi. |
21 Of Gerson were two families, the Lebnites, and the Semeites: |
21 The two families that came down from Gerson through Lebni and Semei |
22 Of which were numbered, people of the male sex from one month and upward, seven thousand five hundred. |
22 amounting to seven thousand five hundred males, above the age of a month; |
23 Hi post tabernaculum metabuntur ad occidentem, |
23 These shall pitch behind the tabernacle on the west, |
23 these were to encamp behind the tabernacle, to the west, |
24 sub principe Eliasaph filio Laël. |
24 Under their prince Eliasaph the son of Lael. |
24 under Eliasaph the son of Lael. |
25 Et habebunt excubias in tabernaculo fœderis, |
25 And their charge shall be in the tabernacle of the covenant: |
25 The parts of the tabernacle which were to be in their charge |
26 The tabernacle itself and the cover thereof, the hanging that is drawn before the doors of the tabernacle of the covenant, and the curtains of the court: the hanging also that is hanged in the entry of the court of the tabernacle, and whatsoever belongeth to the rite of the altar, the cords of the tabernacle, and all the furniture thereof. |
26 were the tent itself and its canopy, and the screen stretched over the doorway by which the tabernacle was entered; the curtains for the court, and the hanging at the entrance to the court, with all that belongs to the service of the altar; the tabernacle ropes, too, and its appurtenances in general. |
27 Cognatio Caath habebit populos Amramitas et Jesaaritas et Hebronitas et Ozielitas. |
27 Of the kindred of Caath come the families of the Amramites and Jesaarites and Hebronites and Ozielites. These are the families of the Caathites reckoned up by their names: |
27 The race of Caath, comprising the families that were named after Amram, Jesaar, Hebron and Oziel, |
28 Omnes generis masculini ab uno mense et supra, octo millia sexcenti habebunt excubias sanctuarii, |
28 All of the male sex from one month and upward, eight thousand six hundred: they shall have the guard of the sanctuary, |
28 which counted eight thousand six hundred males above a month old, were in charge of the sanctuary. |
29 et castrametabuntur ad meridianam plagam. |
29 And shall camp on the south side. |
29 They were to encamp south of it, |
30 Princepsque eorum erit Elisaphan filius Oziel: |
30 And their prince shall be Elisaphan the son of Oziel: |
30 under Elisaphan the son of Oziel, |
31 et custodient arcam, mensamque et candelabrum, altaria et vasa sanctuarii, in quibus ministratur, et velum, cunctamque hujuscemodi supellectilem. |
31 And they shall keep the ark, and the table and the candlestick, the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary, wherewith they minister, and the veil, and all the furniture of this kind. |
31 and have the keeping of the ark, the table, the lamp-stand, the altars, the vessels for worship in the sanctuary, the veil, and all other such furniture. |
32 Princeps autem principum Levitarum Eleazar filius Aaron sacerdotis, erit super excubitores custodiæ sanctuarii. |
32 And the prince of the princes of the Levites, Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, shall be over them that watch for the guard of the sanctuary. |
32 These guardians of the sanctuary had the chief of all the Levites at their head, Eleazar, son of the high priest Aaron. |
33 And of Merari are the families of the Moholites, and Musites, reckoned up by their names: |
33 The two families of Merari’s line, named after Moholi and Musi, |
34 All of the male kind from one month and upward, six thousand two hundred. |
34 counting six thousand two hundred males above a month old, |
35 Princeps eorum Suriel filius Abihaiel: in plaga septentrionali castrametabuntur. |
35 Their prince Suriel the son of Abihaiel: they shall camp on the north side. |
35 were to encamp on the north, under Suriel the son of Abihaiel. |
36 Under their custody shall be the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars, and the pillars and their sockets, and all things that pertain to this kind of service: |
36 They were to guard the frames and poles of the tabernacle, the posts with their sockets, and all that went with such an office; |
37 And the pillars of the court round about with their sockets, and the pins with their cords. |
37 the posts of the outer court, too, with their sockets, the pegs and the ropes. |
Quisquis alienus accesserit, morietur. |
38 Before the tabernacle of the covenant, that is to say on the east side, shall Moses and Aaron camp, with their sons, having the custody of the sanctuary, in the midst of the children of Israel. What stranger soever cometh unto it, shall be put to death. |
38 In front of the tabernacle, that is, on the east, Moses and Aaron were to encamp with their sons, keeping guard over the sanctuary in the midst of the Israelite people; it was death for any other to come near it. |
39 Omnes Levitæ, quos numeraverunt Moyses et Aaron juxta præceptum Domini per familias suas in genere masculino a mense uno et supra, fuerunt viginti duo millia. |
39 All the Levites, that Moses and Aaron numbered according to the precept of the Lord, by their families, of the male kind from one month and upward, were twenty-two thousand. |
39 The whole strength of the Levites, all the families registered at the Lord’s command by Moses and Aaron, was twenty-two thousand males above a month old. |
40 And the Lord said to Moses: Number the firstborn of the male sex of the children of Israel, from one month and upward, and thou shalt take the sum of them. |
40 And now the Lord said to Moses, Count up all the male first-born in Israel who are more than a month old, and find their number. |
41 And thou shalt take the Levites to me for all the firstborn of the children of Israel, I am the Lord: and their cattle for all the firstborn of the cattle of the children of Israel: |
41 I must have a Levite for every male in Israel; it is the Lord’s due. And they must have cattle to match in number all the first-born cattle the Israelites possess. |
42 Recensuit Moyses, sicut præceperat Dominus, primogenitos filiorum Israël: |
42 Moses reckoned up, as the Lord had commanded, the firstborn of the children of Israel: |
42 So Moses counted the first-born of Israel, as the Lord bade him, |
43 And the males by their names, from one month and upward, were twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three. |
43 and found that there were twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three such persons. |
44 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: |
44 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: |
44 And the Lord said to Moses, |
Ego sum Dominus. |
45 Take the Levites for the firstborn of the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites for their cattle, and the Levites shall be mine. I am the Lord. |
45 Set apart the Levites to be my own, instead of the first-born Israelites, and the cattle of the Levites to be mine, instead of the first-born cattle; it is the Lord’s due. |
46 But for the price of the two hundred and seventy-three, of the firstborn of the children of Israel, that exceed the number of the Levites, |
46 Meanwhile, here are two hundred and seventy-three first-born who have no Levites to match their number; for these, ransom must be paid. |
47 Thou shalt take five sicles for every head, according to the weight of the sanctuary. A sicle hath twenty obols. |
47 Claim five silver pieces, by sanctuary reckoning, for each of them, (the silver piece is worth twenty pence), |
48 And thou shalt give the money to Aaron and his sons, the price of them that are above. |
48 and pay the money to Aaron and his sons, as the ransom for the first-born who are left over. |
49 Moses therefore took the money of them that were above, and whom they had redeemed from the Levites, |
49 So Moses took ransom for those who were left out of the count when the Levites stood as ransom |
50 pro primogenitis filiorum Israël, mille trecentorum sexaginta quinque siclorum juxta pondus sanctuarii: |
50 For the firstborn of the children of Israel, one thousand three hundred and sixty-five sicles, according to the weight of the sanctuary, |
50 for the first-born sons of Israel, a thousand three hundred and sixty-five silver pieces by sanctuary reckoning; |
51 And gave it to Aaron and his sons, according to the word that the Lord had commanded him. |
51 and these he paid over to Aaron and his sons as the Lord had bidden him. |
