Chapter 31
|
Vulgate><Douay-Rheims><Knox Bible
1
Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens:
1
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
1
And now the Lord said to Moses,
2
2
Revenge first the children of Israel on the Madianites, and so thou shalt be gathered to thy people.
2
Soon thou art to become a part of thy people; but first take vengeance, in Israel’s name, on the sons of Madian.
3
3
And Moses forthwith said: Arm of you men to fight, who may take the revenge of the Lord on the Madianites.
3
So Moses ordered a muster of men sufficient to wreak the Lord’s vengeance on the Madianites,
4
4
Let a thousand men be chosen out of every tribe of Israel to be sent to the war.
4
a thousand picked warriors from each tribe.
5
5
And they gave a thousand of every tribe, that is to say, twelve thousand men well appointed for battle.
5
Thus a force of twelve thousand, a thousand from each tribe, was put under arms;
6
6
And Moses sent them with Phinees the son of Eleazar the priest, and he delivered to him the holy vessels, and the trumpets to sound.
6
and he appointed Phinees, son of the high priest Eleazar, to command them, entrusting him with the sacred emblems and the trumpets that must sound for battle.
7
Cumque pugnassent contra Madianitas atque vicissent, omnes mares occiderunt,
7
And when they had fought against the Madianites and had overcome them, they slew all the men.
7
So they fought against the Madianites and defeated them. All the men-folk they killed,
8
et reges eorum, Evi, et Recem, et Sur, et Hur, et Rebe, quinque principes gentis: Balaam quoque filium Beor interfecerunt gladio.
8
And their kings Evi, and Recem, and Sur, and Hur, and Rebe, five princes of the nation: Balaam also the son of Beor they killed with the sword.
8
the chiefs of the tribe, Evi, Recem, Sur, Hur and Rebe among them; Balaam, too, the son of Beor, they put to the sword;
9
9
And they took their women, and their children captives, and all their cattle, and all their goods: and all their possessions they plundered:
9
and took possession of their women-folk and children, their cattle and all their goods. Nothing that belonged to Madian but was ravaged;
10
10
And all their cities, and their villages, and castles, they burned.
10
cities, villages and strongholds were burnt down,
11
11
And they carried away the booty, and all that they had taken both of men and of beasts.
11
and all the booty, all the captives, all the beasts they had taken
12
12
And they brought them to Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and to all the multitude of the children of Israel. But the rest of the things for use they carried to the camp on the plains of Moab, beside the Jordan over against Jericho.
12
they brought with them to Moses and Eleazar; whatever was of use must be brought back to the camp in the plains of Moab opposite Jericho.
13
13
And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the princes of the synagogue went forth to meet them without the camp.
13
Moses went out to meet them, as they drew near the camp, with the high priest Eleazar and all the rulers of Israel.
14
14
And Moses being angry with the chief officers of the army, the tribunes, and the centurions that were come from the battle,
14
And it was an angry welcome they had from him, chiefs and commanders and captains that had gone out to fight;
15
ait: Cur feminas reservastis?
15
Said: Why have you saved the women?
15
What means it, he asked, that you have spared the women-folk?
16
16
Are not these they, that deceived the children of Israel by the counsel of Balaam, and made you transgress against the Lord by the sin of Phogor, for which also the people was punished?
16
Was it not these that beguiled the sons of Israel, at the prompting of Balaam, and led you to play the Lord false by worshipping Phogor, so that a plague fell on the whole people?
17
17
Therefore kill all that are of the male sex, even of the children: and put to death the women, that have carnally known men.
17
All the males must be killed, even the children, and all the women that have had commerce with man;
18
18
But the girls, and all the women that are virgins save for yourselves:
18
the young girls and all the women that are still virgins you may keep for yourselves.
19
19
And stay without the camp seven days. He that hath killed a man, or touched one that is killed, shall be purified the third day and the seventh day.
19
For seven days you must not enter the camp; whoever has killed a man or touched a man that lay killed must be purified on the third day of the seven, and on the last.
20
20
And of all the spoil, every garment, or vessel, or any thing made for use, of the skins, or hair of goats, or of wood, shall be purified.
20
Of all the spoil you have taken, every garment, every pot and pan, that is made of goats’ skins and goats’ hair, or of wood, you must purify too.
21
21
Eleazar also the priest spoke to the men of the army, that had fought, in this manner: This is the ordinance of the law, which the Lord hath commanded Moses:
21
(This was how the high priest Eleazar expounded the law to the men who had come back after the victory: The Lord has warned Moses
22
aurum, et argentum, et æs, et ferrum, et plumbum, et stannum,
22
Gold, and silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin,
22
that gold, silver, bronze, iron, lead and tin,
23
23
And all that may pass through the fire, shall be purified by fire, but whatsoever cannot abide the fire, shall be sanctified with the water of expiation:
23
and all else that can stand the fire’s heat, may be purified by fire, but everything else must be cleansed with lustral water.)
24
et lavabitis vestimenta vestra die septimo, et purificati postea castra intrabitis.
24
And you shall wash your garments the seventh day, and being purified, you shall afterwards enter into the camp.
24
On the seventh day you will wash your clothes, and so you will be able to come into the camp, purified men.
25
Dixit quoque Dominus ad Moysen:
25
And the Lord said to Moses:
25
This, too, the Lord said to Moses,
26
26
Take the sum of the things that were taken both of man and beast, thou and Eleazar the priest and the princes of the multitude:
26
Thou and the high priest Eleazar and the rulers of the people must reckon up the sum of the booty taken,
27
27
And thou shalt divide the spoil equally, between them that fought and went out to the war, and between the rest of the multitude.
27
and divide it up into equal shares, giving half to the men who went out to war, and half to the rest of the people.
28
28
And thou shalt separate a portion to the Lord from them that fought and were in the battle, one soul of five hundred as well of persons as of oxen and asses and sheep.
28
Out of the fighting men’s share, set apart one human creature, one ox, one ass, one sheep, in every five hundred;
29
29
And thou shalt give it to Eleazar the priest, because they are the firstfruits of the Lord.
29
these must be given to the high priest Eleazar, as the Lord’s first-fruits.
30
30
Out of the moiety also of the children of Israel thou shalt take the fiftieth head of persons, and of oxen, and asses, and sheep, and of all beasts, and thou shalt give them to the Levites that watch in the charge of the tabernacle of the Lord.
30
Out of the share that goes to the rest of Israel, set apart one out of every fifty living things, whether human creatures, oxen, asses or sheep, and give them to the Levites, that have the Lord’s tabernacle in their charge.
31
Feceruntque Moyses et Eleazar sicut præceperat Dominus.
31
And Moses and Eleazar did as the Lord had commanded.
31
Moses and Eleazar did as the Lord had bidden them.
32
32
And the spoil which the army had taken, was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,
32
And this was the booty which the army had taken, six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,
33
boum septuaginta duo millia,
33
Seventy-two thousand oxen,
33
seventy-two thousand oxen,
34
asinorum sexaginta millia et mille:
34
Sixty-one thousand asses:
34
sixty-one thousand asses,
35
animæ hominum sexus feminei, quæ non cognoverant viros, triginta duo millia.
35
And thirty-two thousand persons of the female sex, that had not known men.
35
and thirty-two thousand human creatures, all of them of woman’s sex, and such as had never had commerce with man.
36
Dataque est media pars his qui in prælio fuerant, ovium trecenta triginta septem millia quingentæ:
36
And one half was given to them that had been in the battle, to wit, three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep:
36
Half of all was given to the men who had been in battle;
37
e quibus in partem Domini supputatæ sunt oves sexcentæ septuaginta quinque:
37
Out of which, for the portion of the Lord, were reckoned six hundred seventy-five sheep.
37
and of this they set apart as the Lord’s share six hundred and seventy-five sheep,
38
38
And out of the thirty-six thousand oxen, seventy-two oxen:
38
seventy-two oxen,
39
de asinis triginta millibus quingentis, asini sexaginta unus:
39
Out of the thirty thousand five hundred asses, sixty-one asses:
39
sixty-one asses;
40
de animabus hominum sedecim millibus, cesserunt in partem Domini triginta duæ animæ.
40
Out of the sixteen thousand persons, there fell to the portion of the Lord, thirty-two souls.
40
and thirty-two human creatures were dedicated to the Lord out of the half-share of sixteen thousand.
41
Tradiditque Moyses numerum primitiarum Domini Eleazaro sacerdoti, sicut fuerat ei imperatum,
41
And Moses delivered the number of the firstfruits of the Lord to Eleazar the priest, as had been commanded him,
41
All these, the full toll of the Lord’s first-fruits, Moses gave over to the high priest Eleazar, as the Lord had bidden him;
42
42
Out of the half of the children of Israel, which he had separated for them that had been in the battle.
42
taking them from that half of the public spoils that fell to the warriors.
43
43
But out of the half that fell to the rest of the multitude, that is to say, out of the three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,
43
And out of the half that fell to the rest of the people, the three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,
44
et de bobus triginta sex millibus,
44
And out of the thirty-six thousand oxen,
44
the thirty-six thousand oxen,
45
et de asinis triginta millibus quingentis,
45
And out of the thirty thousand five hundred asses,
45
the thirty thousand five hundred asses,
46
et de hominibus sedecim millibus,
46
And out of the sixteen thousand persons,
46
and the sixteen thousand human creatures,
47
tulit Moyses quinquagesimum caput, et dedit Levitis, qui excubabant in tabernaculo Domini, sicut præceperat Dominus.
47
Moses took the fiftieth head, and gave it to the Levites that watched in the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord had commanded.
47
Moses took one in every fifty, and gave them, as the Lord had bidden him, to the Levites that had the Lord’s tabernacle in their charge.
48
48
And when the commanders of the army, and the tribunes and centurions were come to Moses, they said:
48
And now the chiefs and commanders and captains of the army came and told Moses,
49
Nos servi tui recensuimus numerum pugnatorum, quos habuimus sub manu nostra: et ne unus quidem defuit.
49
We thy servants have reckoned up the number of the fighting men, whom we had under our hand, and not so much as one was wanting.
49
My lord, we have been calling the roll of the men we had serving under us, and every one answered his name.
50
50
Therefore we offer as gifts to the Lord what gold every one of us could find in the booty, in garters and tablets, rings and bracelets, and chains, that thou mayst pray to the Lord for us.
50
In thanksgiving for this, we would offer as a gift to the Lord the spoils we have taken severally, such as are of gold; anklet and armlet, ring and bracelet and necklace; and do thou make intercession for us to the Lord.
51
Susceperuntque Moyses et Eleazar sacerdos omne aurum in diversis speciebus,
51
And Moses and Eleazar the priest received all the gold in divers kinds,
51
So Moses and the high priest Eleazar accepted all this gold in all its varied shapes;
52
pondo sedecim millia septingentos quinquaginta siclos, a tribunis et centurionibus.
52
In weight sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty sicles, from the tribunes and from the centurions.
52
sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty sicles in weight, as a gift from the commanders and captains,
53
53
For that which every one had taken in the booty was his own.
53
each of them giving the spoils he had seized for himself;
54
Et susceptum intulerunt in tabernaculum testimonii, in monimentum filiorum Israël coram Domino.
54
And that which was received they brought into the tabernacle of the testimony, for a memorial of the children of Israel before the Lord.
54
and they took it into the tabernacle that bore witness of the covenant, to put the Lord in mind of the Israelites continually.
