He made also an altar of brass twenty cubits long, and twenty cubits broad, and ten cubits high.

Fecit quoque altare æneum viginti cubitorum longitudinis, et viginti cubitorum latitudinis, et decem cubitorum altitudinis.

He made a brazen altar, too, twenty cubits in length and width, ten in height.

Also a molten sea of ten cubits from brim to brim, round in compass: it was five cubits high, and a line of thirty cubits compassed it round about.

Mare etiam fusile decem cubitis a labio usque ad labium, rotundum per circuitum: quinque cubitos habebat altitudinis, et funiculus triginta cubitorum ambiebat gyrum ejus.

And he cast a great round basin ten cubits from brim to brim, five cubits high, and with a girth of thirty cubits.

And under it there was the likeness of oxen, and certain engravings on the outside of ten cubits compassed the belly of the sea, as it were with two rows.

Similitudo quoque boum erat subter illud, et decem cubitis quædam extrinsecus cælaturæ, quasi duobus versibus alvum maris circuibant. Boves autem erant fusiles:

It rested on figures of oxen, and without, a chain of moulding ran round its belly in two rows.

And the oxen were cast: and the sea itself was set upon the twelve oxen, three of which looked toward the north, and other three toward the west: and other three toward the south, and the other three that remained toward the east, and the sea stood upon them: and the hinder parts of the oxen were inward under the sea.

et ipsum mare super duodecim boves impositum erat, quorum tres respiciebant ad aquilonem, et alii tres ad occidentem: porro tres alii meridiem, et tres qui reliqui erant, orientem, habentes mare superpositum: posteriora autem boum erant intrinsecus sub mari.

The oxen were cast in metal, and supported the basin, twelve of them, three facing north, three west, three south, three east, with the basin so resting on them that their hind-quarters were hidden beneath it.

Now the thickness of it was a handbreadth, and the brim of it was like the brim of a cup, or of a crisped lily: and it held three thousand measures.

Porro vastitas ejus habebat mensuram palmi, et labium illius erat quasi labium calicis, vel repandi lilii: capiebatque tria millia metretas.

The basin was a palm’s breadth thick and its brim curved as the brim of a cup does, or of an open lily; it held ninety-six tuns.

He made also ten lavers: and he set five on the right hand, and five on the left, to wash in them all such things as they were to offer for holocausts: but the sea was for the priests to wash in.

Fecit quoque conchas decem: et posuit quinque a dextris, et quinque a sinistris, ut lavarent in eis omnia quæ in holocaustum oblaturi erant: porro in mari sacerdotes lavabantur.

He also made ten smaller basins, and put five on the right, five on the left, for the washing of all that was to be offered in burnt-sacrifice; in the great basin the priests themselves washed.

And he made ten golden candlesticks, according to the form which they were commanded to be made by: and he set them in the temple, five on the right hand, and five on the left.

Fecit autem et candelabra aurea decem secundum speciem qua jussa erant fieri: et posuit ea in templo, quinque a dextris, et quinque a sinistris.

Within the temple were ten golden lamp-stands, of a prescribed pattern, five to the right and five to the left,

Moreover also ten tables: and he set them in the temple, five on the right side, and five on the left. Also a hundred bowls of gold.

Necnon et mensas decem: et posuit eas in templo, quinque a dextris, et quinque a sinistris: phialas quoque aureas centum.

and ten tables disposed in the same way. And there were a hundred goblets, all of gold.

He made also the court of the priests, and a great hall, and doors in the hall, which he covered with brass.

Fecit etiam atrium sacerdotum, et basilicam grandem: et ostia in basilica, quæ texit ære.

There were precincts, too, for the priests, and a great court; the doors of this court were covered with bronze.

And he set the sea on the right side over against the east toward the south.

Porro mare posuit in latere dextro contra orientem ad meridiem.

The great basin was put on the right, towards the south-east.

And Hiram made caldrons, and fleshhooks, and bowls: and finished all the king’s work in the house of God:

Fecit autem Hiram lebetes, et creagras, et phialas: et complevit omne opus regis in domo Dei:

Pot and fork and bowl Hiram made, and all that the king needed for the service of the Lord’s temple;

That is to say, the two pillars, and the pommels, and the chapiters, and the network, to cover the chapiters over the pommels.

hoc est, columnas duas, et epistylia, et capita, et quasi quædam retiacula, quæ capita tegerent super epistylia.

pillar and soffit and capital, and net-work over capital and soffit;

And four hundred pomegranates, and two wreaths of network, so that two rows of pomegranates were joined to each wreath, to cover the pommels, and the chapiters of the pillars.

Malogranata quoque quadringenta, et retiacula duo ita ut bini ordines malogranatorum singulis retiaculis jungerentur, quæ protegerent epistylia, et capita columnarum.

four hundred figured pomegranates, and two lengths of net-work pattern, two rows of pomegranates to each length of net-work, draped over capital and soffit alike.

He made also bases, and lavers, which he set upon the bases:

Bases etiam fecit, et conchas, quas superposuit basibus:

He made stands, and smaller basins for the stands to carry,

One sea, and twelve oxen under the sea;

mare unum, boves quoque duodecim sub mari,

the large basin, with the twelve oxen beneath it,

And the caldrons, and fleshhooks, and bowls. All the vessels did Hiram his father make for Solomon in the house of the Lord of the finest brass.

et lebetes, et creagras, et phialas. Omnia vasa fecit Salomoni Hiram pater ejus in domo Domini ex ære mundissimo.

and pot and fork and bowl besides all else. All such ornaments for the Lord’s house did Hiram, king Solomon’s master craftsman, fashion out of the purest bronze;

In the country near the Jordan did the king cast them, in a clay ground between Sochot and Saredatha.

In regione Jordanis, fudit ea rex in argillosa terra inter Sochot et Saredatha.

the king had them cast in the clay soil of the Jordan valley, between Socoth and Saredatha;

And the multitude of vessels was innumerable, so that the weight of the brass was not known.

Erat autem multitudo vasorum innumerabilis, ita ut ignoraretur pondus æris.

a great multitude of them, so that the weight of bronze was never counted or known.

And Solomon made all the vessels for the house of God, and the golden altar, and the tables, upon which were the loaves of proposition,

Fecitque Salomon omnia vasa domus Dei, et altare aureum, et mensas, et super eas panes propositionis:

Other appurtenances, too, of the Lord’s house must Solomon make; the golden altar, and the golden tables on which the hallowed loaves were set out,

The candlesticks also of most pure gold with their lamps to give light before the oracle, according to the manner.

candelabra quoque cum lucernis suis ut lucerent ante oraculum juxta ritum ex auro purissimo:

the lamp-stand with its lamps, all of pure gold, ready to burn in due course before the shrine,

And certain flowers, and lamps, and golden tongs: all were made of the finest gold.

et florentia quædam, et lucernas, et forcipes aureos: omnia de auro mundissimo facta sunt.

and the flowered bosses for them, and the lamps themselves, and the tongs, of pure gold too.

The vessels also for the perfumes, and the censers, and the bowls, and the mortars, of pure gold. And he graved the doors of the inner temple, that is, for the holy of holies: and the doors of the temple without were of gold. And thus all the work was finished which Solomon made in the house of the Lord.

Thymiateria quoque, et thuribula, et phialas, et mortariola ex auro purissimo. Et ostia cælavit templi interioris, id est, in Sancta sanctorum: et ostia templi forinsecus aurea. Sicque completum est omne opus quod fecit Salomon in domo Domini.

Nothing but must be made of the purest gold, incense-boat and censer and bowl and spoon. Carved doors within, leading to the shrine, temple doors without, alike were plated with gold. Thus Solomon completed all the work needed for the service of the Lord’s house.
