1 And the Lord said to Moses: Yet one plague more will I bring upon Pharao and Egypt, and after that he shall let you go and thrust you out. |
1 The Lord had told Moses, I mean to send one more plague on Pharao, and Egypt with him; after that he will let you go, nay, he will drive you out with all eagerness. |
2 Therefore thou shalt tell all the people that every man ask of his friend, and every woman of her neighbour, vessels of silver, and of gold. |
2 Give the word, then, to all the people, men and women alike, that they are to claim gold and silver trinkets from their neighbours; |
3 And the Lord will give favour to his people in the sight of the Egyptians. And Moses was a very great man in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharao’s servants, and of all the people. |
3 Dabit autem Dominus gratiam populo suo coram Ægyptiis. Fuitque Moyses vir magnus valde in terra Ægypti coram servis Pharaonis et omni populo. |
3 the Lord will let you have your way with the Egyptians. Sore adread of Moses the Egyptians were, both Pharao’s servants and all the people. |
4 And he said: Thus said the Lord: At midnight I will enter into Egypt. |
4 Et ait: Hæc dicit Dominus: Media nocte egrediar in Ægyptum: |
4 And now he said, The Lord sends you this message: At midnight I will make my way through the midst of Egypt, |
5 And every firstborn in the land of the Egyptians shall die, from the firstborn of Pharao who sitteth on his throne, even to the firstborn of the handmaid that is at the mill, and all the firstborn of beasts. |
5 and with that every first-born thing in the land of Egypt will die, whether it be the first-born of Pharao, where he sits on his throne, or the first-born of the slave-woman working at the mill; all the first-born, too, of your cattle. |
6 And there shall be a great cry in all the land of Egypt, such as neither hath been before, nor shall be hereafter. |
6 All over the land of Egypt there shall be loud lament, such as never was yet, never shall be again. |
7 But with all the children of Israel there shall not a dog make the least noise, from man even to beast: that you may know how wonderful a difference the Lord maketh between the Egyptians and Israel. |
7 But where the Israelites dwell, all shall be still, man and beast, not a dog shall howl; you will know at last how signal a difference the Lord makes between Egypt and Israel. |
8 And all these thy servants shall come down to me, and shall worship me, saying: Go forth thou, and all the people that is under thee: after that we will go out. |
8 Descendentque omnes servi tui isti ad me, et adorabunt me, dicentes: Egredere tu, et omnis populus qui subjectus est tibi: post hæc egrediemur. |
8 Then all these servants of thine shall come bowing down to me in entreaty, praying to be rid of me, and of all the people under my command; and when that happens, we will depart. |
9 And he went out from Pharao exceeding angry. But the Lord said to Moses: Pharao will not hear you, that many signs may be done in the land of Egypt. |
9 So he left Pharao’s presence, full of anger. It was a true word the Lord had said to Moses, Pharao will refuse you a hearing, to give occasion for those many signs I mean to do in Egypt. |
10 And Moses and Aaron did all the wonders that are written, before Pharao. And the Lord hardened Pharao’s heart, neither did he let the children of Israel go out of his land. |
10 Moses and Aaron had done all the miracles here recorded, all in Pharao’s presence, and still the Lord hardened Pharao’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites leave his country. |
