1 And the people marched from Haseroth, and pitched their tents in the desert of Pharan. |
1 Profectusque est populus de Haseroth, fixis tentoriis in deserto Pharan. |
1 It was after leaving Haseroth that the people encamped in the desert of Pharan; |
2 And there the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: |
2 Ibique locutus est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: |
2 and here the Lord spoke to Moses, |
3 Send men to view the land of Chanaan, which I will give to the children of Israel, one of every tribe, of the rulers. |
3 bidding him send out men of mark, one from each tribe, to survey Israel’s promised inheritance, the land of Chanaan. |
4 Moses did what the Lord had commanded, sending from the desert of Pharan, principal men, whose names are these: |
4 This Moses did; and the names of the leading men he despatched from the desert of Pharan were these: |
5 Of the tribe of Ruben, Sammua the son of Zechur. |
5 De tribu Ruben, Sammua filium Zechur. |
5 Sammua son of Zechur from Ruben, |
6 Of the tribe of Simeon, Saphat the son of Huri. |
6 De tribu Simeon, Saphat filium Huri. |
6 Saphat son of Huri from Simeon, |
7 Of the tribe of Juda, Caleb the son of Jephone. |
7 De tribu Juda, Caleb filium Jephone. |
7 Caleb son of Jephone from Juda, |
8 Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph. |
8 De tribu Issachar, Igal filium Joseph. |
8 Igal son of Joseph from Issachar, |
9 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Osee the son of Nun. |
9 De tribu Ephraim, Osee filium Nun. |
9 Osee son of Nun from Ephraim, |
10 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Phalti the son of Raphu. |
10 De tribu Benjamin, Phalti filium Raphu. |
10 Phalti son of Raphu from Benjamin, |
11 Of the tribe of Zabulon, Geddiel the son of Sodi. |
11 De tribu Zabulon, Geddiel filium Sodi. |
11 Geddiel son of Sodi from Zabulon, |
12 Of the tribe of Joseph, of the sceptre of Manasses, Gaddi the son of Susi. |
12 De tribu Joseph, sceptri Manasse, Gaddi filium Susi. |
12 Gaddi son of Susi from Manasses’ branch of the tribe of Joseph, |
13 Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli. |
13 De tribu Dan, Ammiel filium Gemalli. |
13 Ammiel son of Gemalli from Dan, |
14 Of the tribe of Aser, Sthur the son of Michael. |
14 De tribu Aser, Sthur filium Michaël. |
14 Sathur son of Michael from Aser, |
15 Of the tribe of Nephtali, Nahabi the son of Vapsi. |
15 De tribu Nephthali, Nahabi filium Vapsi. |
15 Nahabi son of Vapsi from Nephthali, |
16 Of the tribe of Gad, Guel the son of Machi. |
16 De tribu Gad, Guel filium Machi. |
16 Guel son of Machi from Gad. |
17 These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to view the land: and he called Osee the son of Nun, Josue. |
17 Hæc sunt nomina virorum, quos misit Moyses ad considerandam terram: vocavitque Osee filium Nun, Josue. |
17 Such were the names of the men Moses sent out to survey the land, and to Osee, son of Nun, he gave the fresh name of Josue. |
18 And Moses sent them to view the land of Chanaan, and said to them: Go you up by the south side. And when you shall come to the mountains, |
18 And these were the directions Moses gave them for their survey of Chanaan: Make your way in by the south, and when you reach the hill country |
19 View the land, of what sort it is: and the people that are the inhabitants thereof, whether they be strong or weak: few in number or many: |
19 considerate terram, qualis sit: et populum qui habitator est ejus, utrum fortis sit an infirmus: si pauci numero an plures: |
19 look well at the land about you. Are its inhabitants strong or weak, many in number or few? |
20 The land itself, whether it be good or bad: what manner of cities, walled or without walls: |
20 ipsa terra, bona an mala: urbes quales, muratæ an absque muris: |
20 Is the land itself prosperous or starved, has it walled cities or unwalled, |
21 The ground, fat or barren, woody or without trees. Be of good courage, and bring us of the fruits of the land. Now it was the time when the firstripe grapes are fit to be eaten. |
21 humus, pinguis an sterilis, nemorosa an absque arboribus. Confortamini, et afferte nobis de fructibus terræ. Erat autem tempus quando jam præcoquæ uvæ vesci possunt. |
21 fertile soil or barren, is it well wooded or bare? Take heart for your enterprise, and bring back with you some sample of what the land yields. (It was the season, then, at which early grapes are already fit to eat.) |
22 And when they were gone up, they viewed the land from the desert of Sin, unto Rohob as you enter into Emath. |
22 Cumque ascendissent, exploraverunt terram a deserto Sin, usque Rohob intrantibus Emath. |
22 So they surveyed the land all the way up from the desert of Sin to Rohob, on the way to Emath. |
23 And they went up at the south side, and came to Hebron, where were Achiman and Sisai and Tholmai the sons of Enac. For Hebron was built seven years before Tanis the city of Egypt. |
23 At the southern end of it, when they reached Hebron, they found the sons of Enac there, Achiman and Sisai and Tholmai; Hebron had been founded seven years before the Egyptian city of Tanis. |
24 And going forward as far as the torrent of the cluster of grapes, they cut off a branch with its cluster of grapes, which two men carried upon a lever. They took also of the pomegranates and of the figs of that place: |
24 They also made their way to the Ravine of Grapes and cut off a branch with a cluster hanging from it, that needed two men with a pole to carry it; these they brought with them, as well as some of the pomegranates and figs that grew there. |
25 Which was called Nehelescol, that is to say, the torrent of the cluster of grapes, because from thence the children of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes. |
25 It was from this cluster which the Israelites carried away that the place got its name of Nehelescol, the Ravine of Grapes. |
26 And they that went to spy out the land returned after forty days, having gone round all the country, |
26 Reversique exploratores terræ post quadraginta dies, omni regione circuita, |
26 Forty days had passed before they returned from their survey, after traversing the whole country, |
27 And came to Moses and Aaron and to all the assembly of the children of Israel to the desert of Pharan, which is in Cades. And speaking to them and to all the multitude, they shewed them the fruits of the land: |
27 to find Moses and Aaron and all the people of Israel still in the desert of Pharan, by Cades. To these and to the whole multitude they made their report, and shewed them what fruit the land yielded. |
28 And they related and said: We came into the land to which thou sentest us, which in very deed floweth with milk and honey as may be known by these fruits: |
28 And this was the story they told: When we reached the land where our errand lay, we found it indeed a land all milk and honey, as this fruit will prove to you; |
29 But it hath very strong inhabitants, and the cities are great and walled. We saw there the race of Enac. |
Stirpem Enac vidimus ibi. |
29 but it is a powerful race that dwells in it, with strong walled cities; such were the sons of Enac, whom we saw there. |
30 Amalec dwelleth in the south, the Hethite and the Jebusite and the Amorrhite in the mountains: but the Chanaanite abideth by the sea and near the streams of the Jordan. |
30 Amalec habitat in meridie, Hethæus et Jebusæus et Amorrhæus in montanis: Chananæus vero moratur juxta mare et circa fluenta Jordanis. |
30 The south is occupied by Amelec, the mountain parts by Hethites, Jebusites and Amorrhites; by the sea, and round the Jordan river, the Chanaanites are in possession. |
31 In the mean time Caleb, to still the murmuring of the people that rose against Moses, said: Let us go up and possess the land, for we shall be able to conquer it. |
31 And now, to still the rising outcry against Moses, Caleb spurred the people on to invade the land and conquer it; It is ready to fall into your hands, he said. |
32 But the others, that had been with him, said: No, we are not able to go up to this people, because they are stronger than we. |
32 But his companions told them, We cannot attack such a people as this; they are too strong for us. |
33 And they spoke ill of the land, which they had viewed, before the children of Israel, saying: The land which we have viewed, devoureth its inhabitants: the people, that we beheld, are of a tall stature. |
33 And they gave the Israelites an ill account of what they had seen in Chanaan; This country we surveyed, they told them, has too many inhabitants already. Tall of frame are the men we viewed there; |
34 There we saw certain monsters of the sons of Enac, of the giant kind: in comparison of whom, we seemed like locusts. |
34 Ibi vidimus monstra quædam filiorum Enac de genere giganteo: quibus comparati, quasi locustæ videbamur. |
34 nay, some we saw, the race of Enac, of monstrous size as if they were sprung from giants; we looked no bigger than locusts beside them. |
