Profectusque est populus de Haseroth, fixis tentoriis in deserto Pharan.

It was after leaving Haseroth that the people encamped in the desert of Pharan;

And the people marched from Haseroth, and pitched their tents in the desert of Pharan.

Ibique locutus est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens:

and here the Lord spoke to Moses,

And there the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

Mitte viros, qui considerent terram Chanaan, quam daturus sum filiis Israël, singulos de singulis tribubus, ex principibus.

bidding him send out men of mark, one from each tribe, to survey Israel’s promised inheritance, the land of Chanaan.

Send men to view the land of Chanaan, which I will give to the children of Israel, one of every tribe, of the rulers.

Fecit Moyses quod Dominus imperaverat, de deserto Pharan mittens principes viros, quorum ista sunt nomina.

This Moses did; and the names of the leading men he despatched from the desert of Pharan were these:

Moses did what the Lord had commanded, sending from the desert of Pharan, principal men, whose names are these:

Of the tribe of Ruben, Sammua the son of Zechur.

De tribu Simeon, Saphat filium Huri.

Saphat son of Huri from Simeon,

Of the tribe of Simeon, Saphat the son of Huri.

De tribu Juda, Caleb filium Jephone.

Caleb son of Jephone from Juda,

Of the tribe of Juda, Caleb the son of Jephone.

De tribu Issachar, Igal filium Joseph.

Igal son of Joseph from Issachar,

Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

De tribu Ephraim, Osee filium Nun.

Osee son of Nun from Ephraim,

Of the tribe of Ephraim, Osee the son of Nun.

De tribu Benjamin, Phalti filium Raphu.

Phalti son of Raphu from Benjamin,

Of the tribe of Nephtali, Nahabi the son of Vapsi.

De tribu Gad, Guel filium Machi.

Guel son of Machi from Gad.

Of the tribe of Gad, Guel the son of Machi.

Hæc sunt nomina virorum, quos misit Moyses ad considerandam terram: vocavitque Osee filium Nun, Josue.

Such were the names of the men Moses sent out to survey the land, and to Osee, son of Nun, he gave the fresh name of Josue.

These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to view the land: and he called Osee the son of Nun, Josue.

Misit ergo eos Moyses ad considerandam terram Chanaan, et dixit ad eos: Ascendite per meridianam plagam. Cumque veneritis ad montes,

And these were the directions Moses gave them for their survey of Chanaan: Make your way in by the south, and when you reach the hill country

And Moses sent them to view the land of Chanaan, and said to them: Go you up by the south side. And when you shall come to the mountains,

considerate terram, qualis sit: et populum qui habitator est ejus, utrum fortis sit an infirmus: si pauci numero an plures:

look well at the land about you. Are its inhabitants strong or weak, many in number or few?

View the land, of what sort it is: and the people that are the inhabitants thereof, whether they be strong or weak: few in number or many:

ipsa terra, bona an mala: urbes quales, muratæ an absque muris:

Is the land itself prosperous or starved, has it walled cities or unwalled,

The land itself, whether it be good or bad: what manner of cities, walled or without walls:

humus, pinguis an sterilis, nemorosa an absque arboribus. Confortamini, et afferte nobis de fructibus terræ. Erat autem tempus quando jam præcoquæ uvæ vesci possunt.

fertile soil or barren, is it well wooded or bare? Take heart for your enterprise, and bring back with you some sample of what the land yields. (It was the season, then, at which early grapes are already fit to eat.)

The ground, fat or barren, woody or without trees. Be of good courage, and bring us of the fruits of the land. Now it was the time when the firstripe grapes are fit to be eaten.

Cumque ascendissent, exploraverunt terram a deserto Sin, usque Rohob intrantibus Emath.

So they surveyed the land all the way up from the desert of Sin to Rohob, on the way to Emath.

And when they were gone up, they viewed the land from the desert of Sin, unto Rohob as you enter into Emath.

Ascenderuntque ad meridiem, et venerunt in Hebron, ubi erant Achiman et Sisai et Tholmai filii Enac: nam Hebron septem annis ante Tanim urbem Ægypti condita est.

At the southern end of it, when they reached Hebron, they found the sons of Enac there, Achiman and Sisai and Tholmai; Hebron had been founded seven years before the Egyptian city of Tanis.

And they went up at the south side, and came to Hebron, where were Achiman and Sisai and Tholmai the sons of Enac. For Hebron was built seven years before Tanis the city of Egypt.

Pergentesque usque ad Torrentem botri, absciderunt palmitem cum uva sua, quem portaverunt in vecte duo viri. De malis quoque granatis et de ficis loci illius tulerunt:

They also made their way to the Ravine of Grapes and cut off a branch with a cluster hanging from it, that needed two men with a pole to carry it; these they brought with them, as well as some of the pomegranates and figs that grew there.

And going forward as far as the torrent of the cluster of grapes, they cut off a branch with its cluster of grapes, which two men carried upon a lever. They took also of the pomegranates and of the figs of that place:

qui appellatus est Nehelescol, id est Torrens botri, eo quod botrum portassent inde filii Israël.

It was from this cluster which the Israelites carried away that the place got its name of Nehelescol, the Ravine of Grapes.

Which was called Nehelescol, that is to say, the torrent of the cluster of grapes, because from thence the children of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes.

Reversique exploratores terræ post quadraginta dies, omni regione circuita,

Forty days had passed before they returned from their survey, after traversing the whole country,

And they that went to spy out the land returned after forty days, having gone round all the country,

venerunt ad Moysen et Aaron et ad omnem cœtum filiorum Israël in desertum Pharan, quod est in Cades. Locutique eis et omni multitudini ostenderunt fructus terræ:

to find Moses and Aaron and all the people of Israel still in the desert of Pharan, by Cades. To these and to the whole multitude they made their report, and shewed them what fruit the land yielded.

And came to Moses and Aaron and to all the assembly of the children of Israel to the desert of Pharan, which is in Cades. And speaking to them and to all the multitude, they shewed them the fruits of the land:

et narraverunt, dicentes: Venimus in terram, ad quam misisti nos, quæ revera fluit lacte et melle, ut ex his fructibus cognosci potest:

And this was the story they told: When we reached the land where our errand lay, we found it indeed a land all milk and honey, as this fruit will prove to you;

And they related and said: We came into the land to which thou sentest us, which in very deed floweth with milk and honey as may be known by these fruits:

sed cultores fortissimos habet, et urbes grandes atque muratas. Stirpem Enac vidimus ibi.

but it is a powerful race that dwells in it, with strong walled cities; such were the sons of Enac, whom we saw there.

But it hath very strong inhabitants, and the cities are great and walled. We saw there the race of Enac.

Amalec habitat in meridie, Hethæus et Jebusæus et Amorrhæus in montanis: Chananæus vero moratur juxta mare et circa fluenta Jordanis.

The south is occupied by Amelec, the mountain parts by Hethites, Jebusites and Amorrhites; by the sea, and round the Jordan river, the Chanaanites are in possession.

Amalec dwelleth in the south, the Hethite and the Jebusite and the Amorrhite in the mountains: but the Chanaanite abideth by the sea and near the streams of the Jordan.

Inter hæc Caleb compescens murmur populi, qui oriebatur contra Moysen, ait: Ascendamus, et possideamus terram, quoniam poterimus obtinere eam.

And now, to still the rising outcry against Moses, Caleb spurred the people on to invade the land and conquer it; It is ready to fall into your hands, he said.

In the mean time Caleb, to still the murmuring of the people that rose against Moses, said: Let us go up and possess the land, for we shall be able to conquer it.

Alii vero, qui fuerant cum eo, dicebant: Nequaquam ad hunc populum valemus ascendere, quia fortior nobis est.

But his companions told them, We cannot attack such a people as this; they are too strong for us.

But the others, that had been with him, said: No, we are not able to go up to this people, because they are stronger than we.

Detraxeruntque terræ, quam inspexerant, apud filios Israël, dicentes: Terra, quam lustravimus, devorat habitatores suos: populus, quem aspeximus, proceræ staturæ est.

And they gave the Israelites an ill account of what they had seen in Chanaan; This country we surveyed, they told them, has too many inhabitants already. Tall of frame are the men we viewed there;

And they spoke ill of the land, which they had viewed, before the children of Israel, saying: The land which we have viewed, devoureth its inhabitants: the people, that we beheld, are of a tall stature.

Ibi vidimus monstra quædam filiorum Enac de genere giganteo: quibus comparati, quasi locustæ videbamur.

nay, some we saw, the race of Enac, of monstrous size as if they were sprung from giants; we looked no bigger than locusts beside them.

There we saw certain monsters of the sons of Enac, of the giant kind: in comparison of whom, we seemed like locusts.
