1 Then came the daughters of Salphaad, the son of Hepher, the son of Galaad, the son of Machir, the son of Manasses, who was the son of Joseph: and their names are Maala, and Noa, and Hegla, and Melcha, and Thersa. |
1 Salphaad, then, was descended from Joseph through Hepher, Galaad, Machir and Manasses. And now his daughters, Maala, Noa, Hegla, Melcha and Thersa came forward, |
2 And they stood before Moses and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the people at the door of the tabernacle of the covenant, and said: |
2 preferring a suit before Moses and the high priest Eleazar and all the chieftains, at the tabernacle door. This was their plea: |
3 Our father died in the desert, and was not in the sedition, that was raised against the Lord under Core, but he died in his own sin: and he had no male children. Why is his name taken away out of his family, because he had no son? Give us a possession among the kinsmen of our father. |
3 Our father died in the desert, not that he took any part in Core’s rebellion against the Lord; he died accountable for no sins but his own; and he died without male issue. Why must his name be lost to his clan, only because he had no son? Why may we not inherit side by side with our father’s kinsmen? |
4 And Moses referred their cause to the judgment of the Lord. |
4 Retulitque Moyses causam earum ad judicium Domini. |
4 So Moses submitted their plea to the Lord’s arbitrament, |
5 And the Lord said to him: |
5 Qui dixit ad eum: |
5 and the Lord said to him, |
6 The daughters of Salphaad demand a just thing: Give them a possession among their father’s kindred, and let them succeed him in his inheritance. |
6 Justam rem postulant filiæ Salphaad: da eis possessionem inter cognatos patris sui, et ei in hæreditatem succedant. |
6 This is a just plea the daughters of Salphaad are making. Grant them the right to inherit side by side with their father’s kinsmen, and succeed to his property. |
7 And to the children of Israel thou shalt speak these things: |
7 Ad filios autem Israël loqueris hæc: |
7 And make this announcement to the sons of Israel: |
8 When a man dieth without a son, his inheritance shall pass to his daughter. |
8 When a man dies without sons, his property shall pass to a daughter; |
9 If he have no daughter, his brethren shall succeed him. |
9 if he has no daughter, to his brothers; |
10 And if he have no brethren, you shall give the inheritance to his father’s brethren. |
10 if he has no brothers, to his uncles; |
11 But if he have no uncles by the father, the inheritance shall be given to them that are the next akin. And this shall be to the children of Israel sacred by a perpetual law, as the Lord hath commanded Moses. |
11 if he has no uncles either, to those who are next of kin to him. This right holds good at all times by law unalterable; it was the Lord’s command to Moses. |
12 The Lord also said to Moses: Go up into this mountain Abarim, and view from thence the land which I will give to the children of Israel. |
12 After this, the Lord bade Moses climb the mountain of Abarim, that was near by, and view the land he was giving to the sons of Israel as their home. |
13 And when thou shalt have seen it, thou also shalt go to thy people, as thy brother Aaron is gone: |
13 Cumque videris eam, ibis et tu ad populum tuum, sicut ivit frater tuus Aaron: |
13 When thou hast viewed it, said he, thou too, like thy brother Aaron, shalt become a part of thy people. |
14 Because you offended me in the desert of Sin in the contradiction of the multitude, neither would you sanctify me before them at the waters. These are the waters of contradiction in Cades of the desert of Sin. |
14 quia offendistis me in deserto Sin in contradictione multitudinis, nec sanctificare me voluistis coram ea super aquas. Hæ sunt aquæ contradictionis in Cades deserti Sin. |
14 Both of you earned my displeasure when the people challenged my power in the wilderness of Sin, by not vindicating my holiness before their eyes. (This was by the Waters of Rebellion, at Cades in the desert of Sin.) |
15 And Moses answered him: |
15 Cui respondit Moyses: |
15 To this Moses made answer, |
16 May the Lord the God of the spirits of all flesh provide a man, that may be over this multitude: |
16 O God, art not thou Lord of every spirit that breathes? And wilt thou not find this people a ruler, |
17 And may go out and in before them, and may lead them out, or bring them in: lest the people of the Lord be as sheep without a shepherd. |
17 who shall lead them to and fro, marching at their head? Must the people of the Lord go untended, like sheep without a shepherd? |
18 And the Lord said to him: Take Josue the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and put thy hand upon him. |
18 And the Lord said to him, Make choice of Josue, the son of Nun, a man endowed with high gifts; lay thy hand upon him, |
19 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest and all the multitude: |
19 and bid him stand forth before the high priest Eleazar, and the whole assembly. |
20 And thou shalt give him precepts in the sight of all, and part of thy glory, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may hear him. |
20 There, in the sight of all, give him thy last charge, and share with him that dignity which is thine, so that all Israel may learn to obey him. |
21 If any thing be to be done, Eleazar the priest shall consult the Lord for him. He and all the children of Israel with him, and the rest of the multitude shall go out and go in at his word. |
21 But whenever some action is planned, the high priest Eleazar will consult the Lord concerning it; at his word both Josue himself and all Israel, and all the company that goes with them, shall move this way and that. |
22 Moses did as the Lord had commanded. And when he had taken Josue, he set him before Eleazar the priest, and all the assembly of the people, |
22 Fecit Moyses ut præceperat Dominus: cumque tulisset Josue, statuit eum coram Eleazaro sacerdote et omni frequentia populi. |
22 So Moses did as the Lord had bidden him, presenting Josue before the high priest Eleazar and the whole assembly, |
23 And laying his hands on his head, he repeated all things that the Lord had commanded. |
23 Et impositis capiti ejus manibus, cuncta replicavit quæ mandaverat Dominus. |
23 and there laying his hands on Josue’s head, and repeating all the charge which the Lord had given him. |
